I was 300 miles into a 600 mile trip, mostly highway. I stopped, purchased and installed a windscreen. The next 300 miles was a completely different ride, didn’t feel like I was physically fighting the wind. Easier riding, and more enjoyable. It’s been on ever since.
They make a world of difference. My last bike was a Harley-Davidson Wide Glide with no windscreen. And the wind really did a number on your arms and shoulders on the highway.
Simple, not crash wind direct to your chest. And summer bugs or any little things not crashing to you, me too think most useful things buy windshield also good for aerodynamics for fuel consumption
It's always best to hear from well experienced/ professional riders like you! I have just installed a tall windshield on my bike to deflect rain and also insects going straight to my visor! Thank you so much for the very useful information! Salute!
I agree completely with your comment. Here in Michigan we have a lot of insects, especially in the summer when we do most of our riding. I want the wind screen to take the hit of the big messy splat of the bug, not the visor of my helmet.
You are correct on all that you said. I too, am very tall, and without the windscreen, the wind pushes me backwards and causes fatigue and discomfort of arms and shoulders. No windscreen is perfect for everyone, but I would certainly rather have one than not have one. The windscreen on my Versys really hasn't subjected me to any severe buffeting, it's done very well for me so far. I get a little bit of wind and some wind noise, but not bad at all. Another excellent video, I really enjoy watching them.
A very smart topic and I totally agree with you. As for me I usually ride in the dirt or city or commuting on a highway. Several years ago, I bought a naked motorcycle so no windscreen. Then I rode up into the mountains along the highways for an entire day. When I got to the hotel, I couldn't figure out why my neck hurt. That's when I realized that even with an expensive Arai helmet that doesn't buffet at race speeds, the wind pushed my chest and I had to hold my head forward--fatiguing my neck. A windscreen is a must at higher speeds for long periods of riding.
Have had a windscreen since I bought an old Gold Wing. Can't imagine riding without it. I put one on my dual sport and love it. My nephew rode my bike a few times (he has the same bike) and then put one on his bike. Complained that it was harder to see riding on trails on the farm so he lowered it. The mounts have vertical rods and you can loosen the mounts and slide it up and down. I keep my screen low around town and raise it for highway riding.
Once again, Pavlin, another fine video with valuable information & insight. Bravo. I ride an '05 Suzuki GSF1200s (Bandit). It has a half-fairing that covers the pretty much just the headtube area forward of the fuel tank and has a clear windscreen. Unfortunately for me, this windscreen is just A LITTLE short for my 6'2" self & I get the wind that comes from over the top right in my upper chest, just below my helmet. As you might guess, this results in my having to fight the wind a bit if I don't hunch over or lean my chest forward, down towards the fuel tank. The small extentions that I found online seem to all be the same so, I decided to craft my own from clear Plexiglas, Lexan, or polycarbonate. I was able to find hardware at my local hardware store that allowed for a neat & tidy installation as well as some adjustability. A high temperature heat gun, my thigh, & a few other softer items to help shape my custom windscreen extention & after a little of trial & error & adjustment I have MUCH less fatigue from all of that wind, even on shorter rides. Keep up the goid work & I look firward to more from you in the future. Ciao.
Disagree I have a 22" Parabellum on my Super Tenere and hate it I get no airflow to my helmet and get a tapping on top of it. I like a windshield to block air to my chest but let air to my helmet and be able to raise from there if it's cold.
A windscreen needs to be as low as possible but as high as necessary. Conditions change continuously, and so too your windscreen needs to b adjustable for this convenience. By far the best option is to have both an adjustable windscreen with an adjustable wind deflector added. If not possible, a lower non adjustable windscreen with an adjustable deflector is a good option.
When you are sitting upright you should be able to just see over the top of the screen i rode thousands of miles all over North America and I’ve had stuff thrown at me. California was the worst for this
@@motorcycleadventures I think after watching your video, I'll fit the Rally Raid Screen Adjuster kit instead of a larger screen or a defector. What ever position you select it will let air in underneath the screen, so suitable for summer and winter; the best of both worlds.
What taller screen I you using for the XT660z? I have the same bike and I managed to break the old screen by dropping it. The old setup had a habbit of bufferting the top of my helmet since I am 190cm tall. Any good suggestions for a new screen?
Love your videos. Full of honest, logical considerations. I have changed the screen on my V-Strom twice before settling on a Manta screen. I look just over the top of the screen when riding and the buffet zone is just above my helmet. One thing you didn't mention is angle. I have angled my screen back to create much smoother airflow. I once tried it in a lower position and my helmet vibrated so badly I could not see properly.
Great video and I got an idea for you; I think a finger from a nitrile glove could be used for some active sockets. Just a small hole punch or maybe the metal cartridge from an ink pen to make it, stretch over the small plug end and slide down to big end. It's a little raincoat, and you can even find them in black.
On my Tenere I have a strong turbulence at high speed and I initially thought it was because of the factory windshield but it is actually coming along the front shocks and the open space in front of the gas tank. So far the best solution is using a tank bag. Do you have that problem?
Hi pavlin only recently I purchased a MRA deflector type and taller screen truly I cannot believe how GOOD it is ...I've never really bothered about screens in past...but yesterday rode many miles with visor UP because of new screen... very warm in UK...cheers from dave
True, particularly for tall riders. I tried a taller screen and deflector, and it makes a lot of difference. And nobody is going to steal my deflector; it's bolted on, lol
Hi Pavlin, thanks for another practical and interesting video. If your screen discolours due to UV rays, T-cut car paint restorer will bring it back as new and remove light surface scratches.
Use car headlight restoration kits that come with the sealant. Windscreens are made from the same plastic as modern headlights. Polishing them DOES make them look better but the sealant is the best part. It makes them incredibly clear AND stops it happening again for a very long time.
All true, I have additional deflector and yes it vibrates to much but just at low rpm. For the moment t works well for me a taller wind screen is not cheap for me Enjoy Riding,
The worst thing about the windscreen is the massive amount of head buffeting. Ive had multiple bikes, and each one was a struggle with my helmet feeling like it was in a paint shaker....lol
Also the problem with humongous screens is that they negate the air flow from the helmet and the jacket, in summertime is a big problem when riding between 50 and 90 km/h. In my opinion is more about balance, if its not tall enough, buy a deflector, if both are not enough get some nice earplugs :P. And if you are in the case of buying an aftermarket one, buy one that is of nice quality, because from time to time, if the material is good, is easier to polish it, and you get a new screen each time you do that (remember that this screen is also defending you from bugs, rocks and debris that is flying all over the place, and it gets scratched)
I have a Yamaha 2015 fz 07, and 3 months after buying it, I put on a windshield (touring Puig) for most of my rides (weekend) are 200 km to 400 km highway. Feel less tired after each ride.
Did you design your own windscreen? I cannot seem to find a fitting one for my bike (ETZ 250) . Maybe that's the way to go... Great video as always, cheers!

I used to ride a 2015 Kawi Vulcan VN900D touring bike. It had this giant windscreen as stock. So tall I could not see over it. I am not short. It rattled my head around so much that I could not ride it at speeds over 50MPH. It gave me great headaches to ride it with the screen on, so I took it off. It was a good day when I traded that bike in.
Absolutely. Essential on the Tenere at the block connections above the regulator rectifier. Without a mudflap to prevent high pressure spray from the front wheel they get wet, rust and fail. Flap plus grease equals end of problem.
Hi Pavlin Great video as always Please can you tell me where you bought your tank bag rain cover. I have a Famsa tank bag but no rain cover on my XT660Z . Thanks Rob Wheaton
Well my experience is different, yes I have a screen on my 950 but the std screen was a complete pain. Causing buffeting and getting in the way off road. So rather than buy the many replacement options I just took a angle grinder to it removing the top 60 mm. The improvement was brilliant, now rather than my head and shoulders being in turbulent air they were sat in the direct air flow. End of buffeting. Anther added plus is I can see better where the front wheel is going off road. I can still cruz at 80 to 90 mph.
Mine stays clean but on the rare occasion bugs are left on due to time constraints, I'll put a towel wet with soapy water over it for a couple hours. There is 1 dislike! Is there some way for me to dislike the dislike? I really like the looks of the Madstad windshields. The first time I saw one I knew, immediately, that this was the windshield to buy. After watching many reviews, and install videos, I still feel the same.

Lets be honest. 95% of the reason I have a tall windscreen is the looks of it. The decision was made long before I even tried if it is benefitial or not and such is the case with most motorcycle equipment. We take our decisions based on what we see and then find reasons to get it ;)

Does not matter if it is a long trip or not,you need that screen. Even in urban short riding withiut a windscreen you are like ridding next to a Boeing aeroplane😂
True
You are awesome
Am I?
@@motorcycleadventures Yes, it is a fact!
Yes you are.
I learned each and everything about riding from you.
There is 1 dislike! Is there some way for me to dislike the dislike?
I really like the looks of the Madstad windshields. The first time I saw one I knew, immediately, that this was the windshield to buy. After watching many reviews, and install videos, I still feel the same.
Thanks for taking the time Scott!
when it rains, you dont ride, duh, you find a bridge or a viaduct and you wait for rain to stop, lol, or you stay at home if it is forecasted ;)
If you can
I see. I'm not putting my number then haha
If you are afraid from your age...
@@motorcycleadventures Not afraid, 58 is my number.
I used Velcro to attach my windscreen to my DR 650 headlight mini faring. . Never detached yet.
Sometimes the simple, cheap modifications much be than high expensive gear.
I’m so cheap I made my windscreen out of an old plastic garbage can.
Another fine video and related to the topic I've just looked into-Wind Noise. This attachment is not extensive (in fact, it's too damn brief), but it does bring up interesting points that moto riders and avid bicyclists, like me, need to be aware of.campaignforbetterhearing.us/how-do-i-protect-my-ears-when-i-ride-a-motorcycle/
Good to know, thanks for adding!
You don't need a windscreen, until you try a bike with one
True!
Lets be honest. 95% of the reason I have a tall windscreen is the looks of it. The decision was made long before I even tried if it is benefitial or not and such is the case with most motorcycle equipment. We take our decisions based on what we see and then find reasons to get it ;)
First like :)
Thanks!
Bike make like a Christmas tree 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
True! I am sure that you have seen some!
@@motorcycleadventures actually i have the same!!!😂😂...
Enjoy it! Christmas is coming every year 😀😀😀😀😀
@@motorcycleadventures LOl!!! True, but still 9mth of riding to be had. And in the good old UK the sun is shinning!!!!
God I hate advertising 😵💫🤮
Don't watch UA-cam then!
No way...
You got swallowed by UA-cam fame.
This is useless.
I quit your channel.
You were original, but got corrupted by modern society...
Ride long, ride safe!
If you say so... thanks for taking the time in my useless video Phil!
i did the same, asked him if he knows the best underpants to wear on amotorcycle but i dont think he is interested in the answer.was a serious question
There will always be haters. Good luck finding your underpants lol.
@@sjaakvandam2170 lol, no underpants = dislike
@@sjaakvandam2170 im not a hater just got bored with the chanel.not the only one im bored with.there are so many making trips for others and not themselves.each to their own.i would never film a trip.its my trip and not for sharing.pure silk briefs work for me.
Agree
