- What you just heard was just part of the text chain between a 13-year-old and 60-year-old Charles Lawrence. As he scrolled on Grindr for some grind, he found a 13-year-old to entice, but what he didn’t know was that the 13-year-old was a sting by former Dateline NBC Reporter Chris Hansen. In this video, we’re taking you through the interrogation of Charles Lawrence, his disturbing chat, and his absurd excuse.
Charles. E. Lawrence III was a successful accountant in New York and a Commercial Real Estate Broker when he started conversing online with a 13-year-old boy on a social media app called Grindr. He talked about how he could “teach him some things” and planned a meeting on October 3rd, 2015. As he stood on the gateway of the 13-year-old boy’s house, out came Chris Hansen and a bunch of police officers, cause that’s how these sting operations work.
Lawrence was taken to the interrogation room just to see what kind of excuse he could whip out for being at a 13-year-old boy’s doorstep and what he was planning to do.

Having observed so many of these types of crimes and criminals i think a good assumption on how to spot them would definitely be their under developed sense of connection with their surroundings and environment. It’s against Grindr’s terms of service for any user to be less than eighteen. Don’t get me wrong: I obviously support protecting children at any cost and severely punishing victimizers. But if you meet a person on a casino floor, in a bar, on an app or some other place where they have agreed that they are eighteen . . . what is considered legal due diligence? Why would you believe what the person messages about their age is true but what they claimed to be in an adult-only space is false?
I had the same thought Tay. I'm from a country based in English law (like US and Canadian law are) except entrapment is illegal here. I've seen Canadian show Bait Car and Chris Hansen on UA-cam and I never had anything against the Chris Hansen show, and supported the premise of it, but I didn't know they ever used 18+ services to chat to these people.
That makes me feel a bit uneasy, authorities overstepping a bit. Even if he was criminally intentioned, he would have a strong legal case here, could argue that he believed they were role-playing.
Germany goes further than we do, ANY form of entrapment there is forbidden. Our authorities are legally allowed to pretend to be underage to try and buy tobacco or alcohol in a shop, but the Germans even have to tread carefully around that.

In 2015 I was 15 years old :/ not a boy, but still a minor that could have easily been taken advantage of. Is grindr an app for over 18s? If so, then setting up a sting account on an app where one might look for over 18s is technically entrapment. You could be getting someone to do something they wouldn't have done. If a bank left a trolly with a million dollars on it outside the bank, most people would take it even if they weren't normally inclined to do so.
anyone who signs up for Grindr knows that there is no age verification on it beyond the saying "no minors". bars across the entire world have signs like that on the door but bartenders are still expected to check an ID because it is possible to lie.

Unfortunately, technically, there is no victim. There is no 13 year old boy involved, and if this guy had a brain, he would not of said anything without an attorney. Many of these cases did not end up in convictions because there is no victim. This guy received two years in prison because he admitted to something that he technically didn't do.
Depends on the laws of the state they are in. In some states even talking to someone you think is underage and engaging in sexual talk is a crime.
That’s not true at all. While the court does take into consideration that it was a decoy it doesn’t keep them from all the consequences.
As someone who has been a victim of creeps like this what is important is that after this they have to register as a SO. While it won’t keep all from reoffending, some will hopefully get the help they need so there next potential victim won’t need to. Not to mention the potential victim the decoy would have been. These guy are now infamous. If they get caught again their record will cause their sentence to reflect that.

That is not what the laws say and you know it.
Because school boards are mandating educators talk to student to proposition children for sexual acts and discuss ass-to-mouth with them? Because they are charged and prosecuted for that regularly.
If your argument is that the education system at the lowest level has a problem of child preparatory behavior from individuals I would totally agree. Simply because a rate of 0% of educators being child predators in any way is the only acceptable amount. Unfortunately any institution that involves adults in positions of power working directly with minors inherently attracts predators who are taking advantage of that environment. Look at church's with youth programs, boy scouts, and more.
Proper sex education has proven to improve victim's ability to recognize and report predatory and worse behaviors. Not just from adults, but their own peers. It reduces STI rates, teen pregnancies (and subsequently abortions, child poverty and absent fathers, and drop out rates). And removing education about subjects that might make you or other parents uncomfortable wouldn't stop any minor from hoping on the internet and learning all about sex in the least healthy and often times harmful ways to growing brains like pornography. Neglecting healthy sexual and biological education causes minors to either be woefully underprepared for understanding their own health, safety, and future intimacy and/or pushing them off onto the internet which promotes a pipeline of ever more pornoghaphic and explicit content.

Why don’t these people ever say in the text "I’m just coming over to meet you and hang out, I’m not coming for sex"? I mean, such a simple way to protect yourself from this sort of thing. Not that I want to give them ideas and im sure someone has done it. I don’t know what they’d do. Actually they’d just arrest him anyway and say "yes he made it abundantly clear that he wasn’t coming for any sex and just to meet and hang out… but 13, cummmmon!" Guilty. To modern juries (12 cowards), it’s better that 1000 innocent people get wronged imprisoned for life than for one guilty person to go free. After all, the innocent people aren’t a threat to anyone. It’s cute how they instantly change their minds about that when they are charged with a crime.
