This is just another example of why I love Lynch's adaptation. Even if it barely feels like a completed film, in terms of story arch, dialogue, VFX etc. it still is crammed with little details that give it so much character, many of which seem to have been based on the Dune universe.
I've been a big fan of Brad Dourif since I was eight-years-old.... I realize that means I've liked him for nearly 17 years, but dang....he's gorgeous.....and brilliant....brilliant, too....
Great information. I'm currently re-reading Dune and I've yet to find mention of hand signals by Piter or between Paul and Lady Jessica. (BTW, the camera work in this video almost triggered motion sickness. 😆)
not to be "that guy" but... RE; the movie clip shown. If we assume, characters in movie scene = Characters in same scene in book, then. Piter is using sign language because that man is deaf (and picked for the task for that reason) and the signs he's using are to emphasize and enhance the man's lip reading. Dourif may have invented the signs used by De Vries but in this specific scene the character is signing for a reason unrelated to his (dourif's) explanation.
Was that in the book? That's crazy because I was wondering why Jack Nance was always yelling in the movie. I always figured it was just because Nance is crazy! But that makes sense. I'll have to read Dune again, it's been many years.
@@DarthRushy that's why I was saying "IF we assume that the characters in the scene.. are the same". It's been long enough since i've watched Dune that I can't/couldn't remember what the continuity of characters was. in other words I did/do not know for sure if the characters in the movie shot(s) shown were accurate to those found in the analogous book scene, or if the guy Piter is signing to in the movie is, as he should be per the book, the hand-picked, deaf, Harkonen house trooper from the book.

He did such a great job with the mannerisms and way of speaking.
As all things about that movie, we don't get to see De Vries long enough but it's very memorable.

Piter doesn't use any in the book I believe, it was a Dourif/Lynch adaptation. But it does fit the theme of secret languages up very well.

@@landofthesilverpath5823 yes, the book scene specifically spells out that the guard is deaf so as to not fall prey to Jessica using "the voice"
