@@Dr.0203 if they had ended there, then the family would’ve been united on a negative basis (hating Rahul Bose). The entire movie was a journey of the family coming together so it was necessary for the family to come together for something positive (Ranveer’s love) to give a truly satisfying ending. But yeah, even if they had used some other device other than Anushka’s character, it would’ve still been fine because even I had forgotten about her since she’s not the focus of the movie. She’s just the device, which could’ve also been something else.

That “one scene” you’re looking for was in the beginning of the movie. Priyanka talks to her husband about how she felt bad that her parents didn’t put her name on the invitation card. He dismisses her and basically doesn’t allow her to feel how she felt, even though she tells him her brother is on her side. If her husband wasn’t able to see how someone else hurt her, how do you think the conversation would go when she tells him that he is hurting her?
You also have to keep in mind that such a scene isn’t really needed. We are looking at their relationship toward the end of their marriage. They have been married for years at this point, maybe 6-7 years based on her saying she was married at 21. I think it’s safe to assume that in the beginning she did tell her husband that his words and actions hurt her, and she probably even asked him to speak up for her when his mom is taunting her. But he never does. I don’t think this is something she should have to ask him to do but I’m sure she did communicate this to him and after being dismissed multiple times she stopped asking. This can be assumed because she was still unsure of telling her Parents she wants to split up, she knows that she may be shunned by her parents for doing so. She probably tried her best to not end up in the situation of asking for a divorce. Some of this can be assumed just because of the culture she comes from.
And to you this may be something expected in a movie, her leaving him. You wanted something different and to you that would be them working it out. But in Indian Cinema, this is one of the few movies that actually show a woman leaving. Most movies I’ve grown up watching ends with the woman staying, even if the husband cheated, or is disrespectful. They might show a woman leaving an extremely abusive man but even that was rare. I’ve seen way too many of these movies. DDD and Thappad are a few of the exceptions that show that yes, you can leave if you’re disrespected or unhappy. It doesn’t have to be only if there’s cheating or violent. It’s actually refreshing to see this being normalized!

Rahul Bose wasn't really shown as a two dimensional character...it was clearly established from the start that he was a controlling and insecure husband. It is established that Priyanka tried her best to adjust with him and also love him back because of family pressure. Family pressure is a huge thing in India especially for women. Rahul also ignored the subtle insults his mom inflicted on Priyanka's character. Their love waned slowly. Basically, it was very clear that Rahul's family didn't value Priyanka's character at all...and about the communication part, there are many things which are communicated by body language and emotions...its not necessary to have dialogues all the time..I loved Zoya's choice of conveying the message through body language...

You can see it in the beginning of the movie when she shared with her husband that she felt bad about her name not being on the card and her husband basically brushed it off and didn’t allow her to feel how she felt. Her brother on the other hand understood and even went and told their parents that she felt bad about it, which shows him validating her feelings. There are many scenes like this where other men have understood her better than her husband. It’s not because of lack of communication, it’s the kind of person he is.

There ISNT supposed to be a redemption arc for Rahul Bose's character. He is supposed to be that typical man whose misogyny is something that simply goes unnoticed or is willfully ignored. He never stood up for his wife when his mom constantly belittled her, never appreciated how she'd built her business from the ground up (lets not forget that it was also mentioned that Ayesha started her business selling her own jewelry, so there was no financial support from him either) AND he truly believed that he was a big man for "allowing" his wife to work. He is an example of the nice guy syndrome and according to me, the side of him that we see when he tells Ayesha "Dont make me force you to come with me" is who he actually is.

Yes!! Great point catching that she sold her jewelry to start the business. This shows that she probably asked her husband for money and he either didn’t think she should do it (didn’t want her to work), didn’t believe she could be successful (didn’t have faith in her), or simply didn’t want her to succeed (didn’t want her to become financially independent or more successful than him). But she did it anyway and succeeded and yet he still didn’t give her credit for her hard work, never said he was proud of her. Which you can clearly see when she got emotional after sunny said he was proud.

Indian women are compelled to hold on to their marriage no matter how toxic it is. They have been put under tremendous societal pressure to stay in the marriage as they believe that is what makes them a tolerant, pleasant and perfect woman. Most of them are financially dependent on their husband and even they start earning their career is considered mere hobby and her full time job in priority is family. I totally understand Jaby's point about the communication in relationships etc. But in this movie that's not really what was highlighted because that wasn't they main issue,it was a part of it. Even if Aisha had communicated with her husband she would have been labelled as "Too woke" "too dramatic" "typical empowered woman". It has been hinted multiple times in the movie that her opinions were never really given importance to. Even with the scene where her family stood up for her, they didn't do anything until her husband raised his hands at their daughter. Any type of mental frustration is to be endured by women and men in our society its " not something to be made fuss about", Aisha didn't have the courage to speak up until the moment she was shown the mirror of how low her husband held her in his eyes and how much she was just enduring for the sake of society and "log kya kahenge".

Here Achara is making a very important observation and explaining to a point that Jaby raised. And the response is that Jaby was searching on IMDB. Her point totally lost and he absorbed in his analysis.
I am not saying he is wrong or right. But the fact remains that we try to speak, it just depends on is the other person listening. You keep trying and somewhere if you do not get the attention that you covet, you just stay in silence. A conversation is a 2 way street.

The crux of the matter is that he is an average Indian man and imagine the scary part of him being the standard for an average Indian man , who is so sweet , well mannered and seems to be a “good husband” , in reality he has so many micro aggressions - of him wanting to be in control , him being okay with everything as long as it works for him , seeing his mom as the superior being and putting her on a pedestal and he actually believes he is a good guy, it’s only when loses control of the situation he’s driven to show Priyanka who he is and that’s when Priyanka’s family and the whole world see him for himself , he is not a good guy

The first sequence where he told Ayesha why her name was not on the card, it was a clear depiction of how he was as a partner. How can u communicate to a grown ass man that he can’t say that. He is not child dude. Maybe u don’t know but men in this country don’t enjoy receiving opinions on their bad behaviour. It make things worse. Or in most cases the family especially the mother gets involved. Then starts the taunting and belittling of the wife. Ultimately she is accused of breaking the family just because she expects better behaviour from her husband. Not every woman in india has the choice to leave. I had watched it when I was a teenager and it was relatable then but watching it again and having the similar irl context (was introduced to this "high society" due to my sister's marriage last year) made it 10x more relatable as I watched the bits and pieces (picture in picture) with you guys. These people are REALLY like that lmao. I think the film did a fantastic job at capturing that.

Fun trivia about the movie titles produced by Excel Entertainment (Farhan Akhtar's Production company).
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (basically means YOLO) is a lyric in a song from the movie, Rock On.
Dil Dhadakne Do (Let the Heart beat) is a song from the movie, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.
Kho Gaye Hum Kahan (Where we lost ourselves) is a song from the movie, Baar Baar Dekho.
Jee Le Zara (Live a little) is a song from the movie Talaash.
So, it's interesting how they use the song lyrics as the titles for their successive movies and it fits perfectly with the narrative as well! I love their creative instincts!

I think the whole Priyanka storyline was to try normalize the idea that relationships might not work out in a society where divorce is (sometimes detrimentally) considered taboo. Like, her parents were willing to disown her even though she tried for so many years to make it work. As if she hadn't been trying to the entire time. In societies like this, it's "what will people think?" It's "You just have to make it work." It's "just have a baby, everything will work itself out." It's always the fault of the person seeking the divorce for giving up.

The scene that really stood out for me was when Ayesha tells Manav she wants a divorce and instead of talking it out with her, he goes crying to his mom and then calls her family to talk sense in to her. It told me so much about his character without having to spell it out.
He tells Ayesha earlier that she's not part of Mehra family anymore, yet his attitude through this scene is that Ayesha's parents should fix her defects. At no point is he trying to speak to his wife directly to understand what the issue is. That has clearly been his problem right from the beginning, that he's never seen Ayesha as a person. Just an object that was transferred from the Mehra family to the Sangha family. He's never noticed that she's unhappy, which is why it comes as a surprise to him that his wife wants a divorce.
It's true that he could have married someone else more suited to him. But it never occured to him to check for compatibility because he didn't think his wife would have a personality of her own.

Jaby when Shefali's character feels humiliated at her husband's open flirtations with another woman at their anniversary: "What else does she expect!? She rejected him!" -- Anil's character shouldn't have first chosen to communicate about his feelings with his wife, Jaby? In any case, it's made clear from early on that he's the one who's been cheating on her for decades, which has caused her to increasingly shrink in shame -- it's telling what you did and didn't notice, Jaby.

I noticed all of that. The reason I said what I did about Anil’s flirting is because of how it’s set up and paid off. We see him get rejected and it’s not made clear why until later. The thing is, we see him try and get rejected. So man or woman, if that happens enough times, the partner might look elsewhere. When the deeper history is revealed, then we go back to the conversation about communication. I can’t remember all the dialogue in the film. But in that moment when he was rejected would have been an opportunity to say why she’s rejecting him. He had no idea. So as far as he can tell, he is trying and she just doesn’t want him anymore. He is completely oblivious (as I think a lot of men are) to what he is doing wrong. Often times, men need to be told directly or they don’t know. For ages, conflict arises between the opposite genders because men investigate with the ways they know and women think men should just know or they think they have somehow said it when they haven’t. Some men just pay less attention than they should. Could be a combination of the two.

honestly, I kinda don't think that it represents just that 1% living in India because every Indian family in spite of status or the financial barrier naturally has dysfunctionalities. and the true problem with all of us is that we don't listen lol it may sound weird but it's true everyone in our families love talking, and kids hardly get to make any "choices" or "opinions". The only solution to most of the problems that parents give us is educated, marriage, or having a baby. And that's exactly what the movie was trying to focus on But having said that your opinion is also valid. Also, I think because Zoya and Reema both come from a privileged/rich background, they made the story in the "rich" setting because that's what their experience might be... IDK for sure but just guessing. and if you compare it to any other movies/tv shows like k3g, Made in heaven or ZNMD core always revolves around some sort of escapism which we all want at one point in life lol so maybe that's why many people liked or resonated with this movie.
P.S: if you love shefali watch delhi crime s1&2

It's a cultural aspect that Jaby is not getting. There are enough subtext throughout the movie subtly showing that the husband is abusive. But one has to get the Indian family dynamics to understand that. Priyanka's character doesn't speak out as it's not encouraged for women to speak out. Things are now changing in the society, but I still know enough women who cannot express their feelings to their partners. And also, an abusive person is always abusive. Expecting a person to change their personality overnight is unrealistic. I understand Jaby is a hopeful optimist, but unfortunately the world doesn't work like that

@jaby koay In both movies, the husbands were emotionally abusive. But the situations of the two women were different.
While Sridevi's character leaving the marriage could have been an alternate ending and a good one at it. However, she had kids to think about. Her MIL was lovely and supportive. She didn't reciprocate the French guy's feelings. She communicated her feelings through her speech (& her happiness around her friends) which made her husband and daughter understand her perspective. Guilt was written all over their faces. She wasn't herself confident before because of the demeaning attitudes of both her husband and daughter. As she realized her self-worth she could communicate, yet decided to stay back. She made a choice.
In this movie however, Priyanka's character was unhappy first of all because she didn't marry for love. It was like a business deal. They were incompatible. Her husband and MIL considered her their property. Plus the MIL had her own passive-aggressive way of belittling the DIL, which he is never shown objecting to. He was controlling and he was insecure. He brushes her off on many occasions and the movie subtly shows him as a misogynist. Remember he thinks she needs his "permission" to work, even though she sold her jewellery to start a business. He wanted a child because he saw it as the next obvious step in marriage. Imagine how suffocated his wife was that she couldn't tell him a simple thing that she isn't ready for a baby. He became aggressive when she shared what was on her mind and since he disagreed with the possibility of a divorce being a man. She had no support system staying back with him. She had no kids and she was doing everything in her might to avoid the pregnancy. She hesitated to take the step for so long because she saw no support from her parents either. Finally, she chose to move out of this unsatisfying marriage.
At the same time, we see her parents patching even though the father had a history of cheating. That's more problematic rather than Priyanka's character seeking a divorce!

      @@CineDesi wow! I got a reply from Jaby and I didn't notice!!!
The difference between the two screen husbands as Indian understanding goes is of being emotionally abusive and flippantly dismissive. Another point is we Indians expect older women who belong to a "different generation" to be much more submissive to societal norms. It's not fair, but it's an unfortunate fact. Also a genuine apology for being dismissive goes a long way, than being an ass till the last moment. The other comments in this thread have explained this much better than I did.

If this movie was any longer, jaby would have probably called it 'Scooby Dooby Do ' towards the end.

First of all I want to appreciate jaby for trying to stay consistent with his logic of communication>divorce in a marriage. Because it was pretty similar to his argument with thappad also.
But i MUST point out, that in my humble opinion, maybe there was a reason Aysha never felt comfortable with manav(rahul bose). When you get into a 'forced' arranged marriage there is no responsibility of any partner to stay in that relationship if its not working out. Despite that she has tried to love him but shes just not happy with his 'companionship'. Not to mention the fact that manav was comfortable getting physical with Aysha in front of her parents which means he might have been forcedul or violent at some other points of their marriage also in private settings if 'she upset him'. We have also had a very good foundation laid down in the beginning by that small conversation at manav and Aysha 's house where Aysha 's mother in law passive aggressively expresses her displeasure with Aysha's relatively modern life. And if SHE has such values, then her mama's boy, manav probably does too: where they value quiet, docile, dutiful homemaker women. If you get stifled with such remarks every day and have a husband who flips when hes angry and wants to stay married to you despite your absolute displeasure purely for business reasons, i dont think its worth staying in such a marriage. Especially when it wasnt a choice of love.
In thappad on the other hand, tapasee pannu's character had a love marriage. They decided to stay together through thick and thin out of love . But she never fought for it. And she knew who he was well before marrying him too.
Which is why i think in thappad your argument of communication wouldve made sense. But here there are enough hints to show that manav is not a great person to be married to. Especially if you have a kind and caring childhood sweetheart.

I suggest that the end review of the movie should have time stamps and be divided into parts like acting, background score, etc etc and then have a overall rating from you guys out of 10 which would make it more interesting 🤗
