The Eagles toured with Jethro Tull and learned so much from them, listen to Hotel California and then the wonderful Tull track 'We used to know' Ian Anderson generously said we never sued the Eagles for Hotel California theyjust reproduced the same chord progression What he did not say was that the Eagles watched Tull from the side of the stage night after night Jethro Tull were far superior to the Beatles and wrote more songs that were also of a far superior quality I do not think Tull have retired but if they perform again the concert will be a sell out

He is one of the top 10 richest drummers in the world, and thinks he did it all himself - as "he doesn't need any bloody fans, or Don Felder". Thing is, he sucks as a drummer. I knew I would never feel the same about the Eagles after I watched a live concert DVD with Don Felder's replacement. I realized how important the tone of Felder's guitar was to their sound. I totally agree that today's line up should be Henley and friends and I just can't get into at all.
I think the HFO tour was great. Once they ousted Felder, I have no interest in them. I completely agree, Felder’s sound was very important. Henley & Frey have/were extremely talented and had some great songs which I love to this day, but those two were/are greedy control freaks.

Yeah I mean if you pay to go see the "eagles" your basically just seeing don Henley and friends not the eagles now I love the eagles my favorite album of theirs has to be hotel California but now they are basically an eagles playlist with all of their classic songs and making people pay thousands of dollar when you could just go see a video of them playing live on youtube.

I was so fortunate to see the Eagles on the Hell Freezes Over tour. It was fantastic. Then Don Felder is fired. I love all Eagles material but to fire one of the greatest guitarist in the bizz seemed outlandish. No way would I ever spend 1 penny to see them without Felder. And Eagles ticket prices were outlandish starting on that Hell Freezes tour. A few years later ( maybe 10 ) I had the great pleasure to see Don Felder at The Ottawa Blues Festival playing all those great Eagles tunes and his own solo tunes ( All Of You and Take a Ride on Heavy Metal ) . He was amazing and the band was on fire. Tommy Shaw came out to play Hotel California. Wonderful. I`d love to go see Don Henley as a solo show but this Eagles pretense has got to stop.( RIP Glen )
We saw them for the Hell Freezes Over tour also. The show was transcendent, but I would agree that that was probably the Eagles' last stand. We saw them on a hot summer night at an outdoor venue and the beer flowed freely to cool us off because the police in our Southern town were making sure there was no trace of the dreaded doobie to be found 😉 Felder was there as well as the rest of the guys, they did an inspiring Hotel California as a perfect intro to the show. The rest of the show was pretty much perfect also. Since they were s screwing Felder, I guess they just wanted him to have great memories of the tour to think back on?
Certainly Joe Walsh is a great guitarist and gets plenty of recognition, but it is Don Felder that is just an amazing guitarist - raising the bar for all guitarists who is overlooked and not given the recognition so very deserved. He may not be in top 10 best all time guitarists, but he deserves to be in the top 20. Yes he is THAT good!
@@guitarman3968 Don't be so sure about that. They are two very very different types of players. Both of them are incredible players but Joe Walsh is a prolific writer and Felder isn't although he may have never been given the opportunity to have more of his material released.
Agree. I prefer the early Eagles, including when Don Felder came on. Hotel California is their masterpiece, no doubt. The Long Run is just good overall, for me, and I also believe it was the end of The Eagles. Since then it's just a cash grab 💰💰😎😎
I absolutely agree. The Eagles plateaued with Hotel California. It’s been a slow, consistent downhill slide ever since. A total cash grab now. They’re slowly killing the brand and Henley is all about the arrogance and the money. He always has been.
The day that Don Felder was no longer an Eagle was the day I was done with the band. Felder put the Eagles on the rock n roll map. The guitar work of Frey or Leadon certainly was not enough to get them Arena/Stadium status. They would have just been another soft rock 70's act like Poco, Firefall, America, Pure Prairie League, and probably would have faded away as a band completely.
The Eagles died when Glenn Fry died. Firing Don Felder did not help, but I would go to an Eagles Concert with Henley, Fry, Walsh, and Schmidt. I would not go now.
I agree about Joe Walsh! I saw him and Barnstorm at a "Day on the Green" in Oakland, in the '70s. Has always been one of my favorite, from the James Gang to his current work!
I don't see the connection with Vince Gill in the Eagles. He was good in the Pure Prairie League, and is a unbelievable guitarist, but I don't understand the fit to the band.
I always laugh at Henley and Frey claiming that “Felder was greedy” when it was them that demanded to be paid more. Felder was only demanding what he was contractually owed, but Henley and Frey were bound and determined to cheat him out of it.
I agree with you whole heartedly, Michael! The Long Run was the beginning of the end for this great American band! When they fired Don Felder for trying to stick up for himself, my respect for them was damaged for good! The current line up is a joke!!
The Eagles were never as good after Randy Meisner left (he co-wrote my favorite Eagles song Take it to the Limit) and sure the Long Run had some decent music in it but it doesn't compare to the rest of their catalogue. I have lost respect for musicians who tour the way they do now and would never pay that kind of money to see a shadow of a band.
I hear ya. Fricking Kiss has been on their farewell tour for the last 10 years! And it's to the point Paul Stanley on the last of the last tours couldn't sing AND play guitar at the same time. It was bloody awful. You'd think they'd get maybe Ace back to cover for Paul so he could focus on singing. Yeah right.
Henley is an egomaniac and an asshole. His and Frey's bad egos were fueled by one another IMO. I loved Felder and Meisner, and Frey was a complete dick to both of them. Jealousy is one of the worst erroneous behaviors. Obviously both Frey and Henley were very thin-skinned and fragile = and unable to share or be happy for anyone else' success in their own troupe. I can't stand anyone who NEEDS desperately to be the boss, and whose style is to keep their thumb on his "hired help". The height of hypocrisy was when Henley had the gall to run his yapper; "Only in America (would an ex-actor (Reagan) get elected to the highest office in the land)". I guess he only wanted corrupt lawyers ruling over us. He HATED anyone who wasn't an incompitant wingnut liberal (jimmy carter, anyone?), so I started hating Henley at that point. Just shut up and sing, dummy. Henley couldn't carry Reagan's jockstrap, especially in diplomacy, tact or grace. And it's really stupid to offend over half of your potential audience over political opinions - that don't matter. Sad because I adore his voice and 'stylings'.

The only time I saw them live was just after they fired Felder. It was not the Eagles as far as I was concerned. They played quite a few Joe Walsh songs. Which, in itself, is not so bad, but I paid for Eagles music. So, for me, the Eagles ceased to be when they fired Felder.
You're right, the Eagles died with the breakup after The Long Run was released. But, they began their slow death with the leaving of Bernie Leadon; their illness progressed when Randy Meisner left, and the end came with the breakup in 1980. That was the end of the classic Eagles. All of their iterations since the reforming in '94 (even though they have put out new material) have just been the Vegas version of the band.
I agree, with my only exception being that I really LOVED the "Hell Freezes Over" concert/album.....especially the concert! I have the DVD, and it's one of my cherished concerts.
If anyone killed the Eagles it was Frey. He was obviously jealous of Felder’s talent, and that he came up with the biggest Eagles hit, hands down. Felder was a thorn in his side and Frey couldn’t stop picking at the wound. Didn’t help much that Henley just sort of sat there letting it happen like an enabling wife.
I totally agree. I don't even think Henley had a problem with Felder ever until Frey brought up the whole money thing. Felder played on Henley's 2000 solo album and then gets dismissed less than a year later? Yeah, I,don't think so. Frey and his greedy little buddy Irving Azoff are to blame for all the issues in the band.

Love them both. Felder's solo on One of These Nights is phenomenal and of course, despite the protestations of Henley and Frey, he wrote the score for Hotel California.

But the too-short, blistering true solo Felder delivers on One Of These Nights is one of the nastiest out there. To paraphrase from the movie Love At First Bite: "Without Felder, the Eagles are like karaoke, on a Monday night."

Absolutely agree. I think when Frey pushed Leadon out because he wanted a more rock sound and Walsh was added the beginning of the Frey- Henley dictatorship began. And when Irving Azoff got put into the mix later on business wise the GREED really began.
You and I would connect immediately. I not only feel the same way, but express it the same way too! I first met Randy Meisner when we opened for Ricky Nelson in Norfolk, NE in 1971. Then I saw him with POCO in Boulder, CO later that year, (I think it was). When he left Poco, and Schmitt replaced him, I didn't really feel like it was Poco anymore. Then, when he left the Eagles, and Schmitt replaced him, I didn't feel like it was the Eagles anymore. I used to joke, How many more bands is he going to leave and be replaced by Timothy B. Schmitt? The Eagles won't be worth much of anything in another generation. They block all of their music from existing anywhere on the internet unless they upload it themselves. They do this more intensely than just about any band in history. Today's youth (and tomorrow's) don't listen to the radio. They don't go to CD stores. They discover music on the internet. The Eagles don't exist to be found by almost anyone under the age of 30. In another 20 years that'll be anyone under the age of 50. They're going to become completely forgotten. Completely obscure.
That’s always been my thought. They stop people filming at shows very strictly. I don’t understand that mentality. Queen on the other hand have their own cover band working at the same time. The difference here might be that Brian May is a nice guy with brains.
Correct; they hit UA-camr's with copyright violations for posting guitar lessons on their songs so people can't learn to cover them correctly. Other musicians (Ed King from Lynyrd Skynyrd for example) have posted guitar instructionals themselves for their fans that want to learn their songs. Henley sucks. Always has.

However, you can throw shade & be pissed off all you want by Henley & Frey's shrewd business ways. But I think the Eagles will be alright & still worth plenty 100 years from now as will their music still continue to be relevant years from now. People still line up because of the Name and the material and Henley being "the voice" so to speak. I fell out with them when they fired Felder, arguably one of the best guitarists to ever come down the pike. He so well understood that more is not necessarily better. He just came up with parts that fit so well. And I would challenge anyone to come up with a better duo that Felder and Walsh on the same stage. Amazing. It's interesting. We now have two Eagles cover bands. One has the singer, the other has the guitar player. Both worth more than they can ever spend, so why aren't they playing together? Certainly more money won't make any difference in what they eat tomorrow.
I'm inclined to agree. That being said, I'd argue for qualifying one point: The Eagles died in '94 when the decision was made to only feature the Long Run lineup for the reunion, rather than inviting Leadon and Meisner to join the party. One of that band's finest hours for my money was when all seven got together to play the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony: that was a glimpse into a possible future wherein the band would still be releasing new music that could stand toe-to-toe with their heyday material.
To me, ironically it's Don Henley and Glen Frey (RIP) That not only built the eagles but have collectively destroyed them in there golden years. The eagles we're not just about the great songwriting of the 2 and Don Henley's great voice, they were about harmony and other fantastic musicians. After their final take over and law suit against Don Felder, Frey and Henleys new incarnation of the eagles was NEVER the same. There are rules to each and every member, certain places they can't move on stage, how to behave, etc, and Don Henley has made it like a dictatorship. He has always been 100% about the greed of the business. Never about the fans, what they want, or the other members of the band. Sure it's a recipe for success with a voice and skills like his, but it's also a recipe for what's happening to them now. Why anyone would even go and see this is beyond me, Id pay more money to go see the other surviving members that he won't let in the band

I think bands who tour without writing new material just become legacy bands. Roger Glover (Deep Purple) stated back in around 2011 that he wanted the band to record new music to keep things vibrant and interesting. Hence the rebirth (at least here in the U.K) where the band have become a top 5 act again due, in part, to the 3 albums they recorded between 2013 and 2020.
@@mooch514 they have had the same lineup since around 2000. Only changes are Original member Jon Lord passed away (replaced by Don Airey) and this year guitarist Steve Morse left in order to be with his wife who is ill with cancer (replaced by Simon McBride)
I saw DP with Blackmore on the Perfect Strangers tour and they were awesome. Years later I saw them again with Steve Morse. They were still good but something was missing. Nothing against Morse but Blackmore spot is a tough position for any musician to replace.
Uriah Heep with David Byron on vocals - the ultimate most authentic rock band ever - not to take anything away from Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. Brilliant and incomperable to this day - that is the line ups as they were at their peak. It's not just The Eagles that died - it's authentic rock itself that's gone. I stopped listening to modern rock bands a long time ago. They fall terribly short of these giants of rock. I could listen to Uriah Heep's Demons and Wizards or Look at Yourself albums forever because its pure rock artistry.
I'm with you Amanda. They had something that the other big 3 did not have. Brilliant harmony vocals! They could all sing. But Byron's vocals were just something else. They also had the multi-talented Hensley who not only added keyboards & acoustic guitar, but brilliant slide guitar as well !! "Look At Yourself" is one of the greatest, most authentic albums ever.

I've written music with lyrics a.w.a. poetry all my life - so I have a pretty good idea of the level of writing they delivered. The lyrics - especially from Hensley - each song was just well crafted. In the good old days concept albums like Demons and Wizards delivered something extra. A great concept ties everything together and puts the music into another dimension. A collection of random songs can never achieve that for any band. To this day I prefer to write conceptually - whether it be music or poetry. I'll rather listen to great music over and over again than to waste my time listening to music that just doesn't cut it. These days people are no longer promoted for pure talent. The entire music industry has become a joke.

Lyrics are not my forte (i do write them). Melodies & chord progressions are my thing. I can really appreciate the music that Uriah Heep crafted. "Paradise/The Spell" a great example. And it wasn't just Hensley. Take "Circus" for instance (Gary Thain, Mick Box, Lee Kerslake). Just beautiful !! And the fantasy lyrics (themes) put them on another level. Heep were ALWAYS a level above Zep, Purple & Sabbath for me.
OMG the absolute sad state of affairs with American music is appalling in 2022! NEVER has it been this bad in the history of America the total lack of talented and capable new bands - any genre. It's a desert. . These new bands just suck, really suck. I only listen to newer foreign bands today. (and Uriah Heep is the shit).
I love the 70s albums, and I saw the History of the Eagles tour which was actually very good and worth seeing (paid 70 euros for the ticket which is also a fair price in this day and age and Bernie Leadon was back on that tour). But I will not see the current line up as I do agree this is not the Eagles anymore. It really died with Glenn Frey.
I agree with you Michael - I'd say they were done when they got rid of Felder. I saw the eagles a couple of times the last being the Long Road Out Of Eden tour and over paid for tickets (it's embarrassing to mention ) and it was a good concert. But there are two trains of thought when going to see a band - the first one is to want to hear the songs exactly like the CDs, every solo note for note like the album, every vocal part etc. The second one is to go hoping for a unique experience where they change it up a bit. The Eagle are in the first category. It was like listening to a sterile CD. I personally prefer category two. I get it that that kind of music most people want to hear the hits like the album but God forbid the guitar solo be in the moment. We enjoyed the show but I won't go again, especially at these rip off prices. Just feel they were/are all about the money. What is Henley's net worth ? Around 250 million, the poor guy...
In The History of the Eagles, I felt that at least Frey put himself out there. Henley seems very sneaky and the way he referred to Don Felder as “Mr Felder” like it’s a deposition.
I agree with you on just about everything you said. I will add however, why I don't think of the Eagles as "the Eagles" now, and haven't been, for a very long time. You have guys in their 70's trying to do songs from the 70's, and their voices simply cannot get to those high notes anymore. In fact, they've pretty much lost their "singing" voices. So, in order to fix this, they drop the keys of the original songs to lower singing registers, and somehow believe that this is passable to the original fans. Um, no! Don't screw with the original keys of the songs! Once this is done, the original songs immediately lose their value, to me. I think the Eagles died when Felder left the band. He is half the guitar soloing on their most played, most popular song: Hotel California. You can't just dismiss him as being a hired gun. Sidenote: Frey, Walsh and Schmit are all Scorpios; and Scorpio's all stick together. Believe me, that had a lot to do with all of it.
Dude, you hit the nail on the head. Michael, thanks for telling it like it is!! I saw the Eagles in the spring of 73 at the end of the tour for desperado. That’s the only time I’ve seen the Eagles and I agree that after Bernie Leadon left, they were not the same Eagles on the border is my favorite album, but desperado is an amazing production, and, the first album says it all about the Eagles.
To be fair, only two of the original five Rolling Stones are still going and nobody seems to question that. I was an Eagles fan in the early 70s, Desperado etc before they became very popular. A friend of mine was a staunch Eagles fan and was over the moon to get the contract to chauffeur them during one leg of of their tour. Because of that gig, he can't bring himself to listen to their music anymore. That's how much he thought of them as human beings.

Got to give them credit for how they've kept going but I was always a 60s Stones fan, especially their early R&B stuff. I thought they peaked about the time they recorded the live Get Your YaYas Out and never again took them seriously after they tried to capitalise on the popularity of disco in order to stay relevant. All personal opinion of course - everyone has a different take on it all. Besides, all irrelevant now to this septuagenarian who'd rather whistle along to Dean Martin.
I was at the first show they did in Detroit since Glenn died, whatever you want to call them it was an incredible night of music. Deacon was overcome with emotion, as most of them were, having virtually all of Glenn's Michigan family and old friends in attendance, and a sold out arena erupting in support of Deacon and in memory of our fallen son. This was also very early on with Vince Gill and he rose to meet the moment as well, though I was floored that they largely excluded him from the nights guitar stylings in favor of Joe Walsh and the longtime side man Steuart Smith. The show was very rigidly directed with seemingly no space for actual improvisation, seemed ironic that Don Henley introduced Vince as one of the greatest living guitar players, then kept him from playing more than one solo all night. The tickets weren't cheap, but weren't anywhere near the prices you mentioned, I think I payed just over $100 per seat. It was a genuinely great show. I still feel like on that night I saw the Eagles.
I agree with you. Seen them a couple times over the last few years and they still sound amazing !! I payed a little over $100 a ticket also and had pretty good seats. I understand how many people feel about a band touring with only one or two original members. I think Mick Jones has every right to tour under the name "Foreigner", but I went to see them a couple years ago and Mick wasn't even with the band due to health problems. Don Henley makes sure that the crowd gets to hear everything they want to hear too. They do longer sets today than they did back in the 70s.
I have to agree with you. I saw them in 2019 in Birmingham UK and they were outstanding. Not sure where the high priced ticket comes from, in the UK you could get tickets for around £100.
Don Felder’s exit from the Eagles to me was the end of the Eagle’s and I can’t believe that Joe Walsh continue playing without Don Felder in the band. RIP Eagles, You are not the same without Don Felder.
Had a chance to see Don Felder earlier this year. Put on a great solo show. He really seemed happy and his vocals were good. Didn't cost an arm and leg either! IMO the Eagles died when they fired Don Felder. Hotel California with Felder and Walsh going back and forth can't be topped (sorry Stuart).
Great insights into the Eagles history. I agree that the current version of the band is misrepresenting itself a bit for financial gain. Henley and Frye wanted it all and left a hole in the band that could never be filled in because of their own egos and greed.
Joe Walsh took me with him to The Eagles Concert in Memphis in 1994. Let us ride and sit on the side of the stage and watch and listen. It's a night I'll never forget!!! Trouble is, I went backstage to his dressing room at intermission and Joe was by himself. Tickets were $85 back then. Anyway it was great fun cause Joe and I had worked together at our studio in Memphis, TN.

I totally agree! Your personal history is the same as mine. My parents were also country western fans when I was growing up. I was done with that by the time I was a teen. But the Eagles gave me renewed appreciation for my parents music. In fact the whole 70s "Southern California Sound" like Jackson Browne, Linda Rodstate, Poco, etc. I loved how the Eagles evolved. But you're right. They died after throwing Felder under the bus. Henley is so obsessed with the corporate name now that he has an army of UA-cam cops pulling down Eagles videos and instructional aides. I loved the guys back in the 70s. But total disappointment now.

I disagree vehemently, 2 LP's worth of studio indulgence, not a single decent rock track; it does have a few decent ballads; the girl from yesterday is a great country tune. I bought the CD, listened a few times, it is easily their worst album unless you count the long run.
Don Henley owns the name. He’s worked his butt off his entire life building and maintaining the band and BRAND. There is still a fan base that is willing to pay the ticket prices to see them. 3/5 of the musicians that recorded “The Long Run” are are on that stage every night. That’s the Eagles band, and I gotta tell you, they sound pretty damned good. But The Eagles are more than that. They are an entire organization owned by Don Henley, run by Irving Azoff, and employing hundreds. The band is only part of it. But at least there is only one group of musicians using the name. Love your show, but I can’t agree with your position. You arent being forced to go, but the people who do are usually pretty happy. The Dodgers still broadcast games even though Vin Scully is gone!
Yes, and more power to anyone who has the disposable income to go see them (or say, McCartney)! But for me.....even if I won a lottery, or someone offered to take me to any concert I want to see today, it would be Paul, and not The Eagles.....despite the fact that The Eagles are one of my fave bands of all time. In fact, it could be that the ONLY living human I would think deserves their ticket prices, is McCartney. Also, much as I love The Eagles, they are the epitome of "corporate sell-outs". Of course, Henley's retort would likely be, "Yeah, we sell out every venue we schedule".
In my young life the Eagles became monumental in '77 with the release of the Hotel California album. Again in '81 when I was leaving high school with the release of The Long Run album. That was it for most original Eagles fans back-in-the-day. When Hell Freezes Over was released it tapped into a new generation of fans, so the band capitalized on a perception of former originality for a lucrative music market at the dawn of the 90s. If you remember Michael, around the same time Pink Floyd also toured their Division Bell album which was their last collective tour as a band. Perhaps The Eagles should have said bye-bye at the same time.
The Eagles lost their innocence when Bernie Leadon left the band. They didn't die, but they lost their identity and became an industry, the west coast music industry .
My pick of when the Eagles died was after the last Bernie Leadon album, One of These Nights. With Leadon gone, you lost an multi-instrumentalist. Love Joe Walsh but truthfully, looked like a hired gun and was treated that way. Hotel California sounded just like what the songs it kind of derided; the plastic over produced music that LA and California had become. After Randy Meisner left, they were really gone. Still loved the band; an old friend and I used to have an Eagles appreciation day where we played their albums in order and it always stopped with One of These Nights. Their soul disappeared after that.
Well Michael I saw the Eagles in '72 backing up Gentle Giant and Yes.At the end of the night the Eagles were still the third best band.They only had one album out and I still think it's their best.Oh by the way I paid $2.50
Totally agree with everything you have said. I played a gig with the 'Dakotas' of 'Billy J Kramer' fame. There was one remaining member of the 60's group and not long after he left and was replaced. I suggested on one of their UA-cam videos they were now a covers band. They blocked me. What annoys me is they are getting big gigs because they are called the 'Dakotas' but its not them! How many 'Drifters' groups are there out there? There must be at least 50 in Europe! They are not the Drifters!! They are too young for a start.
I have to agree with you Michael regarding the Eagles, and what you said. There are plenty of these tribute bands around, for example Lynyrd Skynyrd. Gary Rossington is the only original member, and Ronnie Van Zant's brother singing lead vocals, I will pass. Queen and Adam Lambert, just awful to me, how can you replace Freddie Mercury? So true and the price they charge is insane for nothing like the original.
I got into the Eagles when I first heard the On The Border album. The previous albums were OK, as country rock albums go. By the time The Long Run dropped, it was obvious that they were starting to struggle in several respects. For me, the Eagles died at the Long Night at Wrong Beach.
In 1978 me and the art teacher were making accoustic guitars for my art exam, he had the Album hotel California playing every damn lesson haha, it's sadly all about the money everytime
There's a lot to be said for those type of bands. Usually they are called classic rock Allstars, ringo starr and his allstarr band ,ect. and you're right it is like see the former bands but only up to a point.This new Eagles band shouldn't bill themselves as the Eagles at all. How much were tickets? Just curious, I am glad you enjoyed their concert, it's only the naming of the band. You saw an Eagles' lineup in 1994 when they did Hell Freezes Over for MTV Unplugged. That was, for me, their reincarnation. I was glad The Eagles were on tour and in fact saw them in 98-the only time (I hate to admit it) that I saw an Eagles concert. Once Joe Walsb came to the band and brought his James Gang sound to it they really sounded like a hard rock band. I agree with you, Michael that this new lineup is simply Don Henley and friends. That's all he should market it as. Shit, he's got tons of his solo stuff he could do.
So sad, but I agree with your timeline. With Glenn, Randy, and Don Felder gone, really there's just Henley, Walsh, and Schmit as Eagles voices. But I still love the music and they are still one of my top 5 bands.
It looks like I agree with you 100%. Also, it should be noted that their super hit - *_Hotel California_* - was largely Don Felder's baby with Henley adding the lyrics. It was the Eagles - *_Stairway To Heaven,_* - so to speak making Felder deserving of equal concert earnings. And, was Glen Frey's song - *_Get Over It_* - autobiographical? He sure seems to be singing about himself there.
You pretty much described my feelings toward the band Chicago. I believe Chicago was terribly wounded with the death of Terry Kath. But, I was okay to see them continue since they still had untapped talent. Forcing Peter Cetera out of the band was a tragic mistake followed by bringing in Dave Foster to turn them into a pop band was the end of the road for me. Chicago is now nothing more than Robert Lamm's tribute to his former band with Lee Loughnane and James Pankow the last of the original members. Yet, they continue touring with Lamm billing the group as Chicago in its truest form. I also remember when Bad Company fractured in the late 1980s when Paul Rodgers and Boz Burrell split. Bad Company had a solid rock history as they rubbed shoulders with Led Zeppelin. But it was a recognizable name. So when Mick Ralphs and Simon Kirke decided to carry on with Brian Howe, the group changed their sound to what I can only describe as "cookie cutter" rock. It was awful and damaged the name of the band. Paul Rodgers returned years later but the damage was done. Alice in Chains is an exception. Losing Mike Starr and gaining Mike Inez was an improvement. But a lot of people cannot accept William DuVall replacing Layne Staley. The thing is, Staley is dead. AIC is still a relatively young band compared to the Eagles. Jerry Cantrell has a lot of talent left to share and has proven this with AICs last three albums. I have seen them in concert with DuVall and wasn't disappointed. Finally, I ask has anyone ever accepted Brian Johnson as vocalist for AC/DC? Sure the band has sold a lot of albums in the 40 years he has fronted the band. But, I feel the band died with Bon Scott. Every Album with Johnson on vocals sounds like one legthy extended album. Maybe its just me

I consider myself an Eagles fan! Their swan song wasHotel California. When The Long Run came out, I was disappointed. Something was missing.There was trouble in paradise. I knew it was the beginning of the end. They were not alone. It would take a few years and many brave bands too make music cool and good again!
Grateful Dead remaining members got it right by assuming a new band name and recruiting John Mayer to take the role of Jerry Garcia, but not posing himself as a replacement for Garcia. This allows them to connect to the Dead’s legacy of songs and to also do other things and be their own entity.
Some _get it_ - and really know (and respect) their audience. GD was certainly a revolving door in many ways, but they knew when they lost Jerry, they were now something else entirely. They had the advantage of knowing they could carry on no matter what, including the name being just that - a name. Knowing the dead members, even if Jerry had left (and was still alive) they'd have ditched the name.
I took my wife and some friends to see the Eagles in Edmonton Last month. Sat row 4 on the floor. Paid $225 Canadian per ticket (including taxes and fees) . We were treated to 3 hours of amazing music. They played Hotel California in its entirety (some songs with a full orchestra and choir) . Then, they took a brief intermission and played hits for 2 hours. That’s a pretty damn good night. And , it cost less than it would to go to a hockey game .
I went to see The Eagles when they toured Australia on their History tour just under a year before Glen died. First saw them in Perth and then when I returned to Sydney a couple of weeks later went to see them a second time with my wife. Both shows were phenominal. It has to be said though, Joe stole the show.
Really we must have seen different bands ,when I saw them the vast majority of the solos and guitar parts we know and love were played by session guy Stuart Smith with Joe only playing lead on his own songs which I found staggering.Joe Walsh Eagles lead guitarist but the hired guy plays nearly all the famous solos .....watch the video from the tour and it’s there for all to see .
I do agree, after the Long Run the group broke up. That’s pretty much it. The rest in my opinion is a all about cashing in while they still could. The Long Run is my favorite album m. I was in high school when it was released and to it it had an incredible sound. In fact I listen to the a few weeks and still just as fresh. Play disco strangler and tell me in wrong. 😆 they played 3 shows in Memphis for the Long Run but sold out so fast, so I didn’t have a chance to se me them. Never got into Hell Freezing Over. Hello Michael...I actually loved the Eagles when they were new in the 70s...when in late summer of 80 they imploded ,I thought that was the end of that.When Hell Freezes Over happened in 1994(?) I thought cool theyre back but those ticket prices ..couldnt do it.As far as when they should have stopped...I was pissed when the whole Felder outing happened in 2001...but when Frey died that should have been it.Also when Long Road out of Eden was released..I was rooting for it to be great.Out of 20 songs....I liked 2...2.It just showed that the 70s was their golden era.Great video Mike thanx for sharing and take care
I’ve seen some Don Felder interviews. He was part of the “corporation “. He was making $$$ aside from playing. I understand he sued them not for kicking him out, but not compensating him from the corporation. He’s better off now. Maybe not making as much money, but definitely a satisfied mind. I love The Eagles, but would not go see them now. I saw them in 1980 before the breakup. $15 with 3 opening acts.

The original line up of the eagles was the best and joe Walsh in the band was great I like joe Walsh alot in his James gang days I agree with you on what you say here I also like the eagles 2nd album. I hope you talk about the band moody blue's one day one of my favorite I think when glenn died that was the end for this band Glenn took a big part of the band with him
I saw the eagles in Las Vegas because of Vince Gill. In fact I am sure 1/3 of the audience did the same. Gill and Henley voice were beautiful. Gill and Walsh guitars were smooth, as was the studio guitarist. I was happy with the gig, as were my nephews seeing their first gig. Ticket prices were fair. But you are right, there is no need to go again.
Gill is no doubt a talent in his own right, but he just is not a good fit for the Eagles. He even said himself, nobody wants to hear me sing New Kid In Town, but guess who sang it instead of Deacon or Timothy?
Folks are buying tickets because when they were big in the seventies they were their favorite band and relate great moments in their life. They are trying to feel those times again.
Fun fact. Steve Martin was friends with them before they formed the band. He said they would get upset when people called them The Eagles. They said the name of the band was Eagles and not The Eagles.
A very good friend of ours asked us to join them at the rescheduled Eagles show in SF last year. It was only after the show when I asked what we owed for the tickets that I found out that our far from the stage upper level tickets were $250 each. Unbelievable. They are robbing their fans. Thankfully we did have a great night with our good friends.
I have to give Def Leppard some due because they always are recording new material and although they don’t match the greatness of their 80s stuff it is still good music. They still got the touch.
Fantastic Michael, I went to the Georgia Jam in 1980 and Def Leppard was the first band to play. They were better than the second band,Scorpions, they were still teenagers at the time. They rocked ,had pure raw energy.
Their lead singer even has smart advice for musicians that grow to hate their hits. He said something along the lines of "if you dont enjoy your hit song, dont write a hit" one hit wonders could take that advice to heart
They ceased to exist without Felder…and what pisses me off the most is that Joe Walsh owes his life to him and doesn’t even give him the time of day now.

The Eagles toured with Jethro Tull and learned so much from them, listen to Hotel California and then the wonderful Tull track 'We used to know' Ian Anderson generously said we never sued the Eagles for Hotel California theyjust reproduced the same chord progression

I knew I would never feel the same about the Eagles after I watched a live concert DVD with Don Felder's replacement. I realized how important the tone of Felder's guitar was to their sound. I totally agree that today's line up should be Henley and friends and I just can't get into at all.

I think the HFO tour was great. Once they ousted Felder, I have no interest in them. I completely agree, Felder’s sound was very important. Henley & Frey have/were extremely talented and had some great songs which I love to this day, but those two were/are greedy control freaks.

I was so fortunate to see the Eagles on the Hell Freezes Over tour. It was fantastic. Then Don Felder is fired. I love all Eagles material but to fire one of the greatest guitarist in the bizz seemed outlandish. No way would I ever spend 1 penny to see them without Felder. And Eagles ticket prices were outlandish starting on that Hell Freezes tour. A few years later ( maybe 10 ) I had the great pleasure to see Don Felder at The Ottawa Blues Festival playing all those great Eagles tunes and his own solo tunes ( All Of You and Take a Ride on Heavy Metal ) . He was amazing and the band was on fire. Tommy Shaw came out to play Hotel California. Wonderful. I`d love to go see Don Henley as a solo show but this Eagles pretense has got to stop.( RIP Glen )
We saw them for the Hell Freezes Over tour also. The show was transcendent, but I would agree that that was probably the Eagles' last stand. We saw them on a hot summer night at an outdoor venue and the beer flowed freely to cool us off because the police in our Southern town were making sure there was no trace of the dreaded doobie to be found 😉 Felder was there as well as the rest of the guys, they did an inspiring Hotel California as a perfect intro to the show. The rest of the show was pretty much perfect also. Since they were s screwing Felder, I guess they just wanted him to have great memories of the tour to think back on?
So who was more talented? Don or Glen? I don't think you can choose one. Both of their solo careers were incredible, too.
Certainly Joe Walsh is a great guitarist and gets plenty of recognition, but it is Don Felder that is just an amazing guitarist - raising the bar for all guitarists who is overlooked and not given the recognition so very deserved. He may not be in top 10 best all time guitarists, but he deserves to be in the top 20. Yes he is THAT good!
Felder is phenomenal, but Walsh is superior to Felder. Much more personable, too.

@@guitarman3968 Don't be so sure about that. They are two very very different types of players. Both of them are incredible players but Joe Walsh is a prolific writer and Felder isn't although he may have never been given the opportunity to have more of his material released.

I absolutely agree. The Eagles plateaued with Hotel California. It’s been a slow, consistent downhill slide ever since. A total cash grab now. They’re slowly killing the brand and Henley is all about the arrogance and the money. He always has been.
The day that Don Felder was no longer an Eagle was the day I was done with the band. Felder put the Eagles on the rock n roll map. The guitar work of Frey or Leadon certainly was not enough to get them Arena/Stadium status. They would have just been another soft rock 70's act like Poco, Firefall, America, Pure Prairie League, and probably would have faded away as a band completely.
Vince Gill was the guitarist for Pure Prairie League which was a " cleaned up" version of The New Riders of the Purple Sage.
When Randy left it broke my heart! He stayed through Hotel California with Joe and Don Felder. After that they were not the same!
The Eagles died when Glenn Fry died. Firing Don Felder did not help, but I would go to an Eagles Concert with Henley, Fry, Walsh, and Schmidt. I would not go now.

One of the best Eagles songs, never heard on radio, is "Good Day in Hell".
I don't see the connection with Vince Gill in the Eagles. He was good in the Pure Prairie League, and is a unbelievable guitarist, but I don't understand the fit to the band.

I always laugh at Henley and Frey claiming that “Felder was greedy” when it was them that demanded to be paid more. Felder was only demanding what he was contractually owed, but Henley and Frey were bound and determined to cheat him out of it.
I saw Don Felder at a half time show at a Raiders game at Las Vegas, phenomenal!
I agree with you whole heartedly, Michael! The Long Run was the beginning of the end for this great American band! When they fired Don Felder for trying to stick up for himself, my respect for them was damaged for good! The current line up is a joke!!
The Eagles were never as good after Randy Meisner left (he co-wrote my favorite Eagles song Take it to the Limit) and sure the Long Run had some decent music in it but it doesn't compare to the rest of their catalogue. I have lost respect for musicians who tour the way they do now and would never pay that kind of money to see a shadow of a band.
I hear ya. Fricking Kiss has been on their farewell tour for the last 10 years! And it's to the point Paul Stanley on the last of the last tours couldn't sing AND play guitar at the same time. It was bloody awful. You'd think they'd get maybe Ace back to cover for Paul so he could focus on singing. Yeah right.
To me, "Take it to the limit" is a magical song. A song that stands on its own in that it defies comparison. Timeless beauty.

Don Felder is a decent guy. I can't say the same about Don Henley.
Henley is an egomaniac and an asshole. His and Frey's bad egos were fueled by one another IMO. I loved Felder and Meisner, and Frey was a complete dick to both of them. Jealousy is one of the worst erroneous behaviors. Obviously both Frey and Henley were very thin-skinned and fragile = and unable to share or be happy for anyone else' success in their own troupe. I can't stand anyone who NEEDS desperately to be the boss, and whose style is to keep their thumb on his "hired help". The height of hypocrisy was when Henley had the gall to run his yapper; "Only in America (would an ex-actor (Reagan) get elected to the highest office in the land)". I guess he only wanted corrupt lawyers ruling over us. He HATED anyone who wasn't an incompitant wingnut liberal (jimmy carter, anyone?), so I started hating Henley at that point. Just shut up and sing, dummy. Henley couldn't carry Reagan's jockstrap, especially in diplomacy, tact or grace. And it's really stupid to offend over half of your potential audience over political opinions - that don't matter. Sad because I adore his voice and 'stylings'.

But, they began their slow death with the leaving of Bernie Leadon; their illness progressed when Randy Meisner left, and the end came with the breakup in 1980. That was the end of the classic Eagles. All of their iterations since the reforming in '94 (even though they have put out new material) have just been the Vegas version of the band.
I agree, with my only exception being that I really LOVED the "Hell Freezes Over" concert/album.....especially the concert! I have the DVD, and it's one of my cherished concerts.
If anyone killed the Eagles it was Frey. He was obviously jealous of Felder’s talent, and that he came up with the biggest Eagles hit, hands down. Felder was a thorn in his side and Frey couldn’t stop picking at the wound. Didn’t help much that Henley just sort of sat there letting it happen like an enabling wife.

Love them both. Felder's solo on One of These Nights is phenomenal and of course, despite the protestations of Henley and Frey, he wrote the score for Hotel California.

@@monique8641 It's funny, when people point to great Eagle guitar solos, it's always Hotel California--and it's right up there as one of my fave's, too (even though it's technically not a solo). But the too-short, blistering true solo Felder delivers on One Of These Nights is one of the nastiest out there. To paraphrase from the movie Love At First Bite: "Without Felder, the Eagles are like karaoke, on a Monday night."

Absolutely agree. I think when Frey pushed Leadon out because he wanted a more rock sound and Walsh was added the beginning of the Frey- Henley dictatorship began. And when Irving Azoff got put into the mix later on business wise the GREED really began.

You and I would connect immediately. I not only feel the same way, but express it the same way too! I first met Randy Meisner when we opened for Ricky Nelson in Norfolk, NE in 1971. Then I saw him with POCO in Boulder, CO later that year, (I think it was). When he left Poco, and Schmitt replaced him, I didn't really feel like it was Poco anymore. Then, when he left the Eagles, and Schmitt replaced him, I didn't feel like it was the Eagles anymore. I used to joke, How many more bands is he going to leave and be replaced by Timothy B. Schmitt? The Eagles won't be worth much of anything in another generation. They block all of their music from existing anywhere on the internet unless they upload it themselves. They do this more intensely than just about any band in history. Today's youth (and tomorrow's) don't listen to the radio. They don't go to CD stores. They discover music on the internet. The Eagles don't exist to be found by almost anyone under the age of 30. In another 20 years that'll be anyone under the age of 50. They're going to become completely forgotten. Completely obscure.

That’s always been my thought. They stop people filming at shows very strictly. I don’t understand that mentality. Queen on the other hand have their own cover band working at the same time. The difference here might be that Brian May is a nice guy with brains.
Correct; they hit UA-camr's with copyright violations for posting guitar lessons on their songs so people can't learn to cover them correctly. Other musicians (Ed King from Lynyrd Skynyrd for example) have posted guitar instructionals themselves for their fans that want to learn their songs. Henley sucks. Always has.

However, you can throw shade & be pissed off all you want by Henley & Frey's shrewd business ways. But I think the Eagles will be alright & still worth plenty 100 years from now as will their music still continue to be relevant years from now. People still line up because of the Name and the material and Henley being "the voice" so to speak. I fell out with them when they fired Felder, arguably one of the best guitarists to ever come down the pike. He so well understood that more is not necessarily better. He just came up with parts that fit so well. And I would challenge anyone to come up with a better duo that Felder and Walsh on the same stage. Amazing. It's interesting. We now have two Eagles cover bands. One has the singer, the other has the guitar player. Both worth more than they can ever spend, so why aren't they playing together? Certainly more money won't make any difference in what they eat tomorrow.
I'm inclined to agree. That being said, I'd argue for qualifying one point: The Eagles died in '94 when the decision was made to only feature the Long Run lineup for the reunion, rather than inviting Leadon and Meisner to join the party.
One of that band's finest hours for my money was when all seven got together to play the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony: that was a glimpse into a possible future wherein the band would still be releasing new music that could stand toe-to-toe with their heyday material.
R.I.P. . Eagles 1980. Anything after that, ho-hum.
To me, ironically it's Don Henley and Glen Frey (RIP) That not only built the eagles but have collectively destroyed them in there golden years.
The eagles we're not just about the great songwriting of the 2 and Don Henley's great voice, they were about harmony and other fantastic musicians. After their final take over and law suit against Don Felder, Frey and Henleys new incarnation of the eagles was NEVER the same. There are rules to each and every member, certain places they can't move on stage, how to behave, etc, and Don Henley has made it like a dictatorship. He has always been 100% about the greed of the business. Never about the fans, what they want, or the other members of the band. Sure it's a recipe for success with a voice and skills like his, but it's also a recipe for what's happening to them now.
Why anyone would even go and see this is beyond me, Id pay more money to go see the other surviving members that he won't let in the band

I think bands who tour without writing new material just become legacy bands. Roger Glover (Deep Purple) stated back in around 2011 that he wanted the band to record new music to keep things vibrant and interesting. Hence the rebirth (at least here in the U.K) where the band have become a top 5 act again due, in part, to the 3 albums they recorded between 2013 and 2020.

@@mooch514 they have had the same lineup since around 2000. Only changes are Original member Jon Lord passed away (replaced by Don Airey) and this year guitarist Steve Morse left in order to be with his wife who is ill with cancer (replaced by Simon McBride)

I saw DP with Blackmore on the Perfect Strangers tour and they were awesome. Years later I saw them again with Steve Morse. They were still good but something was missing. Nothing against Morse but Blackmore spot is a tough position for any musician to replace.

I've felt the same way for a couple of decades or more, as soon as Felder left, I couldn't stomach the new version of the eagles from then on.
Uriah Heep with David Byron on vocals - the ultimate most authentic rock band ever - not to take anything away from Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. Brilliant and incomperable to this day - that is the line ups as they were at their peak. It's not just The Eagles that died - it's authentic rock itself that's gone. I stopped listening to modern rock bands a long time ago. They fall terribly short of these giants of rock. I could listen to Uriah Heep's Demons and Wizards or Look at Yourself albums forever because its pure rock artistry.
I'm with you Amanda. They had something that the other big 3 did not have. Brilliant harmony vocals! They could all sing. But Byron's vocals were just something else. They also had the multi-talented Hensley who not only added keyboards & acoustic guitar, but brilliant slide guitar as well !! "Look At Yourself" is one of the greatest, most authentic albums ever.

I've written music with lyrics a.w.a. poetry all my life - so I have a pretty good idea of the level of writing they delivered. The lyrics - especially from Hensley - each song was just well crafted. In the good old days concept albums like Demons and Wizards delivered something extra. A great concept ties everything together and puts the music into another dimension. A collection of random songs can never achieve that for any band. To this day I prefer to write conceptually - whether it be music or poetry. I'll rather listen to great music over and over again than to waste my time listening to music that just doesn't cut it. These days people are no longer promoted for pure talent. The entire music industry has become a joke.

Lyrics are not my forte (i do write them). Melodies & chord progressions are my thing. I can really appreciate the music that Uriah Heep crafted. "Paradise/The Spell" a great example. And it wasn't just Hensley. Take "Circus" for instance (Gary Thain, Mick Box, Lee Kerslake). Just beautiful !! And the fantasy lyrics (themes) put them on another level. Heep were ALWAYS a level above Zep, Purple & Sabbath for me.
OMG the absolute sad state of affairs with American music is appalling in 2022! NEVER has it been this bad in the history of America the total lack of talented and capable new bands - any genre. It's a desert. . These new bands just suck, really suck. I only listen to newer foreign bands today. (and Uriah Heep is the shit).

I love the 70s albums, and I saw the History of the Eagles tour which was actually very good and worth seeing (paid 70 euros for the ticket which is also a fair price in this day and age and Bernie Leadon was back on that tour). But I will not see the current line up as I do agree this is not the Eagles anymore. It really died with Glenn Frey.
I agree with you Michael - I'd say they were done when they got rid of Felder. I saw the eagles a couple of times the last being the Long Road Out Of Eden tour and over paid for tickets (it's embarrassing to mention ) and it was a good concert. But there are two trains of thought when going to see a band - the first one is to want to hear the songs exactly like the CDs, every solo note for note like the album, every vocal part etc. The second one is to go hoping for a unique experience where they change it up a bit. The Eagle are in the first category. It was like listening to a sterile CD. I personally prefer category two. I get it that that kind of music most people want to hear the hits like the album but God forbid the guitar solo be in the moment. We enjoyed the show but I won't go again, especially at these rip off prices. Just feel they were/are all about the money. What is Henley's net worth ? Around 250 million, the poor guy...
In The History of the Eagles, I felt that at least Frey put himself out there. Henley seems very sneaky and the way he referred to Don Felder as “Mr Felder” like it’s a deposition.
I agree with you on just about everything you said. I will add however, why I don't think of the Eagles as "the Eagles" now, and haven't been, for a very long time. You have guys in their 70's trying to do songs from the 70's, and their voices simply cannot get to those high notes anymore. In fact, they've pretty much lost their "singing" voices. So, in order to fix this, they drop the keys of the original songs to lower singing registers, and somehow believe that this is passable to the original fans. Um, no! Don't screw with the original keys of the songs! Once this is done, the original songs immediately lose their value, to me. I think the Eagles died when Felder left the band. He is half the guitar soloing on their most played, most popular song: Hotel California. You can't just dismiss him as being a hired gun. Sidenote: Frey, Walsh and Schmit are all Scorpios; and Scorpio's all stick together. Believe me, that had a lot to do with all of it.
Dude, you hit the nail on the head. Michael, thanks for telling it like it is!! I saw the Eagles in the spring of 73 at the end of the tour for desperado. That’s the only time I’ve seen the Eagles and I agree that after Bernie Leadon left, they were not the same Eagles on the border is my favorite album, but desperado is an amazing production, and, the first album says it all about the Eagles.
To be fair, only two of the original five Rolling Stones are still going and nobody seems to question that. I was an Eagles fan in the early 70s, Desperado etc before they became very popular. A friend of mine was a staunch Eagles fan and was over the moon to get the contract to chauffeur them during one leg of of their tour. Because of that gig, he can't bring himself to listen to their music anymore. That's how much he thought of them as human beings.

Got to give them credit for how they've kept going but I was always a 60s Stones fan, especially their early R&B stuff. I thought they peaked about the time they recorded the live Get Your YaYas Out and never again took them seriously after they tried to capitalise on the popularity of disco in order to stay relevant. All personal opinion of course - everyone has a different take on it all. Besides, all irrelevant now to this septuagenarian who'd rather whistle along to Dean Martin.
I was at the first show they did in Detroit since Glenn died, whatever you want to call them it was an incredible night of music. Deacon was overcome with emotion, as most of them were, having virtually all of Glenn's Michigan family and old friends in attendance, and a sold out arena erupting in support of Deacon and in memory of our fallen son. This was also very early on with Vince Gill and he rose to meet the moment as well, though I was floored that they largely excluded him from the nights guitar stylings in favor of Joe Walsh and the longtime side man Steuart Smith. The show was very rigidly directed with seemingly no space for actual improvisation, seemed ironic that Don Henley introduced Vince as one of the greatest living guitar players, then kept him from playing more than one solo all night. The tickets weren't cheap, but weren't anywhere near the prices you mentioned, I think I payed just over $100 per seat. It was a genuinely great show. I still feel like on that night I saw the Eagles.
I agree with you. Seen them a couple times over the last few years and they still sound amazing !! I payed a little over $100 a ticket also and had pretty good seats. I understand how many people feel about a band touring with only one or two original members. I think Mick Jones has every right to tour under the name "Foreigner", but I went to see them a couple years ago and Mick wasn't even with the band due to health problems. Don Henley makes sure that the crowd gets to hear everything they want to hear too. They do longer sets today than they did back in the 70s.
I have to agree with you. I saw them in 2019 in Birmingham UK and they were outstanding. Not sure where the high priced ticket comes from, in the UK you could get tickets for around £100.
Don Felder’s exit from the Eagles to me was the end of the Eagle’s and I can’t believe that Joe Walsh continue playing without Don Felder in the band. RIP Eagles, You are not the same without Don Felder.
Had a chance to see Don Felder earlier this year. Put on a great solo show. He really seemed happy and his vocals were good. Didn't cost an arm and leg either! IMO the Eagles died when they fired Don Felder. Hotel California with Felder and Walsh going back and forth can't be topped (sorry Stuart).
Great insights into the Eagles history. I agree that the current version of the band is misrepresenting itself a bit for financial gain. Henley and Frye wanted it all and left a hole in the band that could never be filled in because of their own egos and greed.
Joe Walsh took me with him to The Eagles Concert in Memphis in 1994. Let us ride and sit on the side of the stage and watch and listen. It's a night I'll never forget!!! Trouble is, I went backstage to his dressing room at intermission and Joe was by himself. Tickets were $85 back then. Anyway it was great fun cause Joe and I had worked together at our studio in Memphis, TN.
Going to see the Eagles is really going to see an Eagle and his employees and the same applies to the Beach Boys

Your personal history is the same as mine. My parents were also country western fans when I was growing up. I was done with that by the time I was a teen. But the Eagles gave me renewed appreciation for my parents music. In fact the whole 70s "Southern California Sound" like Jackson Browne, Linda Rodstate, Poco, etc.
I loved how the Eagles evolved. But you're right. They died after throwing Felder under the bus.
Henley is so obsessed with the corporate name now that he has an army of UA-cam cops pulling down Eagles videos and instructional aides.

I disagree vehemently, 2 LP's worth of studio indulgence, not a single decent rock track; it does have a few decent ballads; the girl from yesterday is a great country tune. I bought the CD, listened a few times, it is easily their worst album unless you count the long run.

Timothy B Smicht appreciated Randy Meissner. He knew how much he paved the way. Health issues for Randy was one reason he left.
Don Henley owns the name. He’s worked his butt off his entire life building and maintaining the band and BRAND. There is still a fan base that is willing to pay the ticket prices to see them. 3/5 of the musicians that recorded “The Long Run” are are on that stage every night. That’s the Eagles band, and I gotta tell you, they sound pretty damned good. But The Eagles are more than that. They are an entire organization owned by Don Henley, run by Irving Azoff, and employing hundreds. The band is only part of it. But at least there is only one group of musicians using the name.

Yes, and more power to anyone who has the disposable income to go see them (or say, McCartney)! But for me.....even if I won a lottery, or someone offered to take me to any concert I want to see today, it would be Paul, and not The Eagles.....despite the fact that The Eagles are one of my fave bands of all time. In fact, it could be that the ONLY living human I would think deserves their ticket prices, is McCartney.
Also, much as I love The Eagles, they are the epitome of "corporate sell-outs". Of course, Henley's retort would likely be, "Yeah, we sell out every venue we schedule".
In my young life the Eagles became monumental in '77 with the release of the Hotel California album. Again in '81 when I was leaving high school with the release of The Long Run album. That was it for most original Eagles fans back-in-the-day. When Hell Freezes Over was released it tapped into a new generation of fans, so the band capitalized on a perception of former originality for a lucrative music market at the dawn of the 90s. If you remember Michael, around the same time Pink Floyd also toured their Division Bell album which was their last collective tour as a band. Perhaps The Eagles should have said bye-bye at the same time.
The Eagles lost their innocence when Bernie Leadon left the band. They didn't die, but they lost their identity and became an industry, the west coast music industry .

My pick of when the Eagles died was after the last Bernie Leadon album, One of These Nights. With Leadon gone, you lost an multi-instrumentalist. Love Joe Walsh but truthfully, looked like a hired gun and was treated that way. Hotel California sounded just like what the songs it kind of derided; the plastic over produced music that LA and California had become. After Randy Meisner left, they were really gone. Still loved the band; an old friend and I used to have an Eagles appreciation day where we played their albums in order and it always stopped with One of These Nights. Their soul disappeared after that.
Well Michael I saw the Eagles in '72 backing up Gentle Giant and Yes.At the end of the night the Eagles were still the third best band.They only had one album out and I still think it's their best.Oh by the way I paid $2.50

Totally agree with everything you have said. I played a gig with the 'Dakotas' of 'Billy J Kramer' fame. There was one remaining member of the 60's group and not long after he left and was replaced. I suggested on one of their UA-cam videos they were now a covers band. They blocked me. What annoys me is they are getting big gigs because they are called the 'Dakotas' but its not them! How many 'Drifters' groups are there out there? There must be at least 50 in Europe! They are not the Drifters!! They are too young for a start.
I have to agree with you Michael regarding the Eagles, and what you said. There are plenty of these tribute bands around, for example Lynyrd Skynyrd. Gary Rossington is the only original member, and Ronnie Van Zant's brother singing lead vocals, I will pass. Queen and Adam Lambert, just awful to me, how can you replace Freddie Mercury? So true and the price they charge is insane for nothing like the original.

I got into the Eagles when I first heard the On The Border album. The previous albums were OK, as country rock albums go. By the time The Long Run dropped, it was obvious that they were starting to struggle in several respects.
For me, the Eagles died at the Long Night at Wrong Beach.

I saw them a few months ago. They were fantastic! I've also seen Don Felder solo and it was like seeing an Eagles show.
There's a lot to be said for those type of bands. Usually they are called classic rock Allstars, ringo starr and his allstarr band ,ect. and you're right it is like see the former bands but only up to a point.This new Eagles band shouldn't bill themselves as the Eagles at all. How much were tickets? Just curious, I am glad you enjoyed their concert, it's only the naming of the band. I've been to see many concerts featuring bands with only one member and it kind of let me down each time. Thanks for your reply.

You saw an Eagles' lineup in 1994 when they did Hell Freezes Over for MTV Unplugged. That was, for me, their reincarnation. I was glad The Eagles were on tour and in fact saw them in 98-the only time (I hate to admit it) that I saw an Eagles concert. Once Joe Walsb came to the band and brought his James Gang sound to it they really sounded like a hard rock band. I agree with you, Michael that this new lineup is simply Don Henley and friends. That's all he should market it as. Shit, he's got tons of his solo stuff he could do.
So sad, but I agree with your timeline. With Glenn, Randy, and Don Felder gone, really there's just Henley, Walsh, and Schmit as Eagles voices. But I still love the music and they are still one of my top 5 bands.

Great analysis! I've never seen them live, but you are spot on with your observations.
You pretty much described my feelings toward the band Chicago. I believe Chicago was terribly wounded with the death of Terry Kath. But, I was okay to see them continue since they still had untapped talent. Forcing Peter Cetera out of the band was a tragic mistake followed by bringing in Dave Foster to turn them into a pop band was the end of the road for me. Chicago is now nothing more than Robert Lamm's tribute to his former band with Lee Loughnane and James Pankow the last of the original members. Yet, they continue touring with Lamm billing the group as Chicago in its truest form.
I also remember when Bad Company fractured in the late 1980s when Paul Rodgers and Boz Burrell split. Bad Company had a solid rock history as they rubbed shoulders with Led Zeppelin. But it was a recognizable name. So when Mick Ralphs and Simon Kirke decided to carry on with Brian Howe, the group changed their sound to what I can only describe as "cookie cutter" rock. It was awful and damaged the name of the band. Paul Rodgers returned years later but the damage was done.
Alice in Chains is an exception. Losing Mike Starr and gaining Mike Inez was an improvement. But a lot of people cannot accept William DuVall replacing Layne Staley. The thing is, Staley is dead. AIC is still a relatively young band compared to the Eagles. Jerry Cantrell has a lot of talent left to share and has proven this with AICs last three albums. I have seen them in concert with DuVall and wasn't disappointed.
Finally, I ask has anyone ever accepted Brian Johnson as vocalist for AC/DC? Sure the band has sold a lot of albums in the 40 years he has fronted the band. But, I feel the band died with Bon Scott. Every Album with Johnson on vocals sounds like one legthy extended album. Maybe its just me

I knew it was the beginning of the end. They were not alone. It would take a few years and many brave bands too make music cool and good again!
Grateful Dead remaining members got it right by assuming a new band name and recruiting John Mayer to take the role of Jerry Garcia, but not posing himself as a replacement for Garcia. This allows them to connect to the Dead’s legacy of songs and to also do other things and be their own entity.
Still, I go to see Wolf Bros or Phil Lesh & Friends but not Dead & Co. I just can't do that.
Some _get it_ - and really know (and respect) their audience. GD was certainly a revolving door in many ways, but they knew when they lost Jerry, they were now something else entirely. They had the advantage of knowing they could carry on no matter what, including the name being just that - a name. Knowing the dead members, even if Jerry had left (and was still alive) they'd have ditched the name.

I took my wife and some friends to see the Eagles in Edmonton Last month.
Sat row 4 on the floor. Paid $225 Canadian per ticket (including taxes and fees) .
We were treated to 3 hours of amazing music. They played Hotel California in its entirety (some songs with a full orchestra and choir) .
Then, they took a brief intermission and played hits for 2 hours.
That’s a pretty damn good night. And , it cost less than it would to go to a hockey game .
Eagles were the Eagle throught the Long Run. You are right. Six years is about the limit for a great band.
I went to see The Eagles when they toured Australia on their History tour just under a year before Glen died. First saw them in Perth and then when I returned to Sydney a couple of weeks later went to see them a second time with my wife. Both shows were phenominal. It has to be said though, Joe stole the show.
Really we must have seen different bands ,when I saw them the vast majority of the solos and guitar parts we know and love were played by session guy Stuart Smith with Joe only playing lead on his own songs which I found staggering.Joe Walsh Eagles lead guitarist but the hired guy plays nearly all the famous solos .....watch the video from the tour and it’s there for all to see .
I do agree, after the Long Run the group broke up. That’s pretty much it. The rest in my opinion is a all about cashing in while they still could.
The Long Run is my favorite album m. I was in high school when it was released and to it it had an incredible sound. In fact I listen to the a few weeks and still just as fresh. Play disco strangler and tell me in wrong. 😆 they played 3 shows in Memphis for the Long Run but sold out so fast, so I didn’t have a chance to se me them. Never got into Hell Freezing Over.

Hello Michael...I actually loved the Eagles when they were new in the 70s...when in late summer of 80 they imploded ,I thought that was the end of that.When Hell Freezes Over happened in 1994(?) I thought cool theyre back but those ticket prices ..couldnt do it.As far as when they should have stopped...I was pissed when the whole Felder outing happened in 2001...but when Frey died that should have been it.Also when Long Road out of Eden was released..I was rooting for it to be great.Out of 20 songs....I liked 2...2.It just showed that the 70s was their golden era.Great video Mike thanx for sharing and take care
I’ve seen some Don Felder interviews. He was part of the “corporation “. He was making $$$ aside from playing. I understand he sued them not for kicking him out, but not compensating him from the corporation. He’s better off now. Maybe not making as much money, but definitely a satisfied mind. I love The Eagles, but would not go see them now. I saw them in 1980 before the breakup. $15 with 3 opening acts.
He certainly looks and acts much happier than Henley.

The original line up of the eagles was the best and joe Walsh in the band was great I like joe Walsh alot in his James gang days I agree with you on what you say here I also like the eagles 2nd album. I hope you talk about the band moody blue's one day one of my favorite I think when glenn died that was the end for this band Glenn took a big part of the band with him
The end of the Eagles was with 'The Long Run' (in 1979) and their '79-'80 Tour. They needed to break up at that point.
I saw the eagles in Las Vegas because of Vince Gill. In fact I am sure 1/3 of the audience did the same. Gill and Henley voice were beautiful. Gill and Walsh guitars were smooth, as was the studio guitarist. I was happy with the gig, as were my nephews seeing their first gig. Ticket prices were fair. But you are right, there is no need to go again.
Gill is no doubt a talent in his own right, but he just is not a good fit for the Eagles. He even said himself, nobody wants to hear me sing New Kid In Town, but guess who sang it instead of Deacon or Timothy?
Folks are buying tickets because when they were big in the seventies they were their favorite band and relate great moments in their life. They are trying to feel those times again.
Fun fact. Steve Martin was friends with them before they formed the band. He said they would get upset when people called them The Eagles. They said the name of the band was Eagles and not The Eagles.
Steve Martin can sure get lucky in his career. Friends with the eagles and gets to work with John candy on a John Hughes film

A very good friend of ours asked us to join them at the rescheduled Eagles show in SF last year. It was only after the show when I asked what we owed for the tickets that I found out that our far from the stage upper level tickets were $250 each. Unbelievable. They are robbing their fans. Thankfully we did have a great night with our good friends.
I have to give Def Leppard some due because they always are recording new material and although they don’t match the greatness of their 80s stuff it is still good music. They still got the touch.
Fantastic Michael, I went to the Georgia Jam in 1980 and Def Leppard was the first band to play. They were better than the second band,Scorpions, they were still teenagers at the time. They rocked ,had pure raw energy.
Their lead singer even has smart advice for musicians that grow to hate their hits.
He said something along the lines of "if you dont enjoy your hit song, dont write a hit" one hit wonders could take that advice to heart
They ceased to exist without Felder…and what pisses me off the most is that Joe Walsh owes his life to him and doesn’t even give him the time of day now.
