Kid, you have an amazing opportunity. I’m 70, and back in the day, you’d have to lose money to learn. No information was just given away. Now, the best instruction available is free on UA-cam (unless you can donate five bucks to your favorite sites to support them.) But remember, other people have the same opportunities, but the ones who practice the most will usually win. It’s a great sport, and one of the few you can play til you’re my age.

Just getting back into pool after taking about a year off. I always loved the game, and for several years got really into shooting regularly at a local pool hall. Just wanted to say thank you for providing your knowledge and insights in such an accessible way. Last year I was lucky enough to have a lesson with Tony Robles right before the lockdown where he taught me the open Bridge. I am still working on my open Bridge and getting my thumb tucked up against my index finger.
Hey dude, been playing HARD for 2 months now. I play everyday at the moment. atleast 2 hours. I just wanna say these videos have helped my game a TON! Not this video specifically but the one where you showed the correct steps before a shot has helped me A LOT. I do notice that when I start missing its because im not following your steps. . . so thank you! 2 years after you made the video its still helping people! Much love from California!
Neils, would love to see a video from you about using the mechanical bridge, and also thinking how to avoid needing to use the mechanical bridge when playing for position!
Awesome tips man. As a snooker player I find the open bridge feels best, but sometimes mix it up with a closed bridge on some shots. Thanks for the advice.
The bridge with the tucked middle finger is very useful. I first saw it in Mosconi's book. It was used to get your hand lower to the table for a draw shot so you did not have to jack up on the butt of the cue. That nice soft draw real low on whitey.
I was taught the open bridge with the ring finger underneath. When I have to elevate the ring finger acts like a kickstand. Good for me and helps shooting over balls feels pretty stable for me. I found pushing down into the table (not hard but pressing firmly) helps limit extra movement. Open rail bridge too. I only use a closed bridge for breaking. But it's hard (just doesn't feel the best for me) but it helps my cue from raising up when I put alot of power behind it.
@@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen absolutely the shot dictates what bridge I use. Most of the time it's closed, but open is required at times. Thanks for all the great work you've done over the years promoting this complicated sport!👍😏
@@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen Niels, I have seen several times that SOME pro players (those who use close bridge). Those pro players, even when not indended to play a draw shot, during a prestroke, they always bring cuetip down, way down, nearly touchin a cloth... however right before the stroke itself they put the cue tip higher and hit cue ball into middle or top. I'd like to know your answer to this aspect. What is a reason to put a cuetip down during prestroke even when not intended to play a draw shot?
I love this video! I have a great bridge I use that is not shown in the video. It involves putting the back of your hand on the felt with pinky, ring and middle fingers all pointed outward with that 'P' shape you had discussed with my pointer and thumb. I am an ace with that style of bridge, especially with straight shots or mild-angle longshots. It helps me grasp the geometry of the game more-so, and I have used it for years!
This is fantastic! Thank you for this! I’m teaching my son and wife to play and constantly tell them about the importance of a straight stroke and strong bridge. I’m going to show this video to both of them.
I just like watching videos like this. It's always good to go back to basics. As you get better and better you tend to throw away basic mechanics. For instance bridging. It's not something you think about as a more experianced player because it's so basic, and you learn to compromise on certain shots because you just know it'll work. Now I have an issue where my thumb does not bend, so i have had to come up with an alternate way of shooting with an open bridge. It's virtually the same but i'm almost always jacked up when i shoot. Not extremely but I do what I have to do to take the shot. I have found that I can use the second knuckle of my thumb and the first or third knuckle of my index finger depending on your definition to create that stable platform. I rarely ever shoot like that, but if i really want that flat shot that's how i do it. I usually shoot slightly elevated with an extended thumb. If it's a shot where i want a little more english and easy enough to make even if I am unstable i'll just throw the stick down a let my back hand take care of it. My biggest issue is long shots. If coming off a rail or banking I'm fine. But attempting a clean long pot is my hardest task. 9/10 times I'm good but that 1/10 is the only one that matters.
Thanks for overview, still I was struggling with closed bridge, specially sight. I just realized that when I move hand further from tip, I can see better where I stroke cue ball. Gonna practice it and see what difference it's gonna make. Maybe something worth to mention? Feels like it's gonna help...
I use a closed bridge primarily-except when shooting from a rail, and when stretching for a shot-and have found that a straight (American) taper is very helpful. If a cue has a gradual (European) taper starting at the tip it will get larger as you stroke, which produces some friction and a feeling that the cue weighs more than it does.
