Salter Kitchen Scales - How Do They Work

  • Somehow the display got broken on our kitchen scales. Given the ridiculously low price of new ones, they are not worth repairing.
    I've always been curious to know how the work so lets take them apart and find out.

    Useful for that extra screw that I missed. As an aside, strain gauges are transducers so you should have you meter on volts not resistance.

      Yes that screw is easy to miss. Strain gauges are basically just resistors so, yes, when the scales are powered up you should measure voltage. However, with the strain gauge disconnected, you can only measure resistance. Actually, to get a real reading out of them you need a special amplifier.

      I took them apart because I was interested to see how they worked. New ones are only £10 so they were never going to economical to repay. Throw away world!
