    Just up from the wharf you were at is the start of the sand flat that was next to the the old baths. My brother and I used to fish both sides of the baths and did quite well there (back in the '70s).

    • @ShroomFishing
      @ShroomFishing 5 років тому

      Nice, I think I know that shallow section there. What kind of fish did you get there back then? It looks really snaggy these days.

    • @RobB-vz2vo
      @RobB-vz2vo 5 років тому

      Casting out along the Northern edge of the baths, which was deeper water, we got: Bream, Whiting, Morwong, Fantail Leatherjackets, John Dory. We caught poddy mullet to use as bait in a trap on the sand flat.The Southern side of the baths was shallower due to the sand building up there. We got the fright of our lives when, standing on the sand flat at half-tide one day, a shark swam behind us and the shore in knee deep water. It was about 5 ft long. Back then the sand-flat was exposed at low tide. The snags would be the foundations that were left there.

    • @ShroomFishing
      @ShroomFishing 5 років тому +1

      I see. I do notice the changes of depth that you mentioned. That is surprising to me that John Dory can be caught there and it's not the first time I've heard of that. That is shocking to hear about sharks in such shallow water, especially on the sand flat.

    • @RobB-vz2vo
      @RobB-vz2vo 5 років тому

      We used to see the occasional much smaller one foot sharks as they swam onto the sand flat. The JD were there in Winter/Spring. Caught them on live poddy mullet or yellowtail on a 6/0 hook under a float while trying to catch kingfish or tailer; just make sure that the live bait is almost dead or their tail is trimmed to slow it down as the JDs are a bit slow. Winter reminds me; the large tailer were a regular visitor to that bay and were a great sport using a Wonder Wobbler. We also used to see kingfish as they swam along the edges, usually in pairs, looking for a feed. Almost forgot, we also caught the odd flounder.

    • @ShroomFishing
      @ShroomFishing 5 років тому

      That is awesome information. You certainly know the area extremely well. I haven't run into any large tailor but I have caught the odd flounder but it seems to be an uncommon catch. One of these days, I will try get a JD somewhere in the harbour, probably further downstream using trimmed down yakkas. I still wonder whether there are still as many sharks in the bay these days.
