New Layout Build - Making a start on the branch line scenery

  • After months of going through ideas on what to do with this area I've now made a start on the first bit of scenery. This part of the layout has little room for industry or buildings due to the track layout so I've started building a more rural section. Behind the mainlines I'll be adding low relief buildings in future to add some variation to the scene. I've got a long way to go with this area but it's great to have another section of bare baseboard covered with scenery.
Link to Luke's video regarding the trees. I'd always wanted to have a go with seafoam trees and found his tutorial very useful. I've been watching Luke for years and many of the techniques used in this video are inspired from Luke's work. Well worth a watch...

Scrapping the idea to have a small derelict depot in favor of going fully rural really was the right choice. Makes the layout appear larger while providing countless photogenic opportunities. Once again, less is more and you did a great job. In itself, this single track branchline tells a story. Looking forward to see the bridge and overpass done!

I think, what makes yours stand out amongst many channels is, to me, the quality of the work, the explanations you give and that you don't rush. I remember when you first put your backscene in and talked about how you envisioned the lay layout to look. Country side, moving slowly into a built up area.. when you dropped those sidings in and the coach shed I did think at the time you've lost that rural area.
That change really has made it so much better.
Layering up all those materials really does work.
