In this video, CBT Nuggets trainer Jeremy Cioara covers Border Gateway Protocol. Find out what BGP is, what it's used for, how it works, and why autonomous systems make the routing decisions they do with this MicroNugget tutorial.
BGP is the routing protocol of the Internet. It finds all the routes that the Internet has, and carries them around the world.
BGP is oriented and aimed primarily at service providers and enterprise customers, not individual households or small users.
The small commercial routers you’d find in a home don’t hold a candle to the routers that service providers have. At that level, BGP allows service providers to peek into their neighbors’ routing tables and learn where to send traffic its users have sent to it.
BGP doesn’t have the time to deal with individual routers, it looks at autonomous systems - many of which might contain hundreds of routers.
BGP runs through a list to decide how to route: it checks the weight of routes, local preference values, local routes, shortest autonomous system path, and more.
BGP is the slowest routing protocol around. A registered domain name can take days to populate, and news that a server has gone down can take a long time to spread to every corner of the Internet.

if all my professors were teaching like this i would actually find learning fun, thanks for the video!
Hi
Couldn’t agree more
agree 100%
Hi Jeremy. I started my Cisco Journey in 2008. Thanks to your training (materials with CBT Nuggets), I am a CCIE (with a number) and I work in multivendor (Juniper, Cisco, Arista, etc) environment. You played an essential part in the beginning of my journey in helping me understand foundations and help me become a good Network Engineer. More I learn, more I realize how less I know. I hope to meet you some day. Food and Drinks on me :) Thank you for your awesome work.
I have recently started my journey in Network Engineering. I want to discuss how to improve and gain more experience with you.
Happy Monday Nugget Fans! Check out Jeremy's newest MicroNugget about the Border Gateway Protocol:
This Jeremy guy is the bomb, it's just so amusing to hear, it's clear, hyped you can tell he just deeply loves this stuff...
me looks at my home router : "He says you are not real router"
my router : "hold my pakets"
lol
this is crazy hilarious!!
this made my morning..
JEREMY HAS HELPED ME A LOT DURING MY CCNA R&S AND CCNP R&S DAYS, NOW PREPARING FOR CCIE R&S IN DUBAI, BELGIUM OR INDIA AFTER THE PANDEMIC!!
hands down Jeremy is the best IT teacher i have ever known. back in 20111 when i was studying to get my CCNA certification, i would watch his cbtnuggets series and man, i can say he's just a wonderful teacher. I wish there were more teachers like him. becasue his enthusiasm about the subjects he's teaches is just contagious and makes you want to learn. Godbless.
I know him because I watched his other tutorials for Cisco certification. He is so talented in teaching. very fun to learn from while being very informative. Indeed impressive
Yeah here because of Facebook/Instagram/WhatsApp outage yesterday and trying to understand BGP issues with what happened. Jeremy teaches things in a fun understandable way and also because I’ve actually used CBT Nuggets.
Slightly unrelated to this specific video but I really appreciate the clarity of the presentations Jeremy provides. He talks with such pace and passion that sometimes you get whisked along (wanting to pet a dog?!) but overall he helps me find the joy in learning and ultimately I put put on the table because of guys like this. Thanks.
I love Jeremy's videos..yes hes slightly hyper...as am I but he makes sometimes dull material fun with his jokes and metaphors. He also presents it in a way that is easy to understand. Keep it up Jeremy!
Wow... wish I had teachers with same level of excitement and energy in my high school.
PS: Loved the energy.
Jeremy is my Bill Nye of networking. His enthusiasm makes me excited to learn.
Jeremy you have made learning really fun for me, all the way from my CCNA, now studying towards my CCIE. It has always been you helping me pass all my exams, i mean if one can't get it being explained by you, it means they will probably never gon get it. I hope to meet you 1 day. Shout out all the way from South Africa. May you leave long bro
I love his teaching speed. I have seen other videos they are making me sleep. Thank you CBT
this explanation was better and faster then my current class I'm taking right now.
I appreciate your enthusiasm in explaining the concept. Thank you!
Thank You Jeremy. Very informative. As I go through my network studies, I always seem to go back to CBT Nuggets for that light bulb going off in your head moment.
This is great. It's nice to see it from other person's view. Please I'd like to hear more from you about bgp
i watched all video tutorial of jeremy and it's really helpful for all those dreaming to be a network engineer
Well done indeed, and thank you. AWS Direct Connect requires some understanding of BGP in certain cases, and this was exactly what I needed to get my head around BGP.
I like his calming voice.
Thank you for having the common sense for teaching a beginners topic. You are awesome.
Yess, please put on some more videos about BGP! I really like your style. Fast and funny! I don't even need to set the speed to 1.25, as I usually do.
Who's watching this after the fb outage? :D
Thanks Jeremy! I love your excitement and clear explaination! I hope there are more tutorials from you on routing protocols!
Wait until you hear him talk about himself rolling down a hillside with his kids and wife dying of laughter! The absolute ninja master of online education. Find his course at www.cbtnuggets.com. He puts to shame the cliché that IT folks are dry and boring, I am sure he can give Trevor Noah a run for his money 😂
I feel all the explanation that you give is just gushing inside us likewise
Thank you Sir 👍
Awesome introduction to BGP, couldn’t have been explained any better.
Jeremy man, you're the best hands down !
Wow. This video is amazing. Awesome job Jeremy. Love the enthusiasm you are bringing to this subject and video. Well done my dude.
That energy is awesome! You make networking sound fun lol
Wow! This was such an intertaining video to watch. Nice!
Did he say automagically?
He says that alot. :)
It seems to be a net/sys-admin thing from the mid 90s at least it's the people who were around then who says it the most in my office
It was still used in Apache documentation int he 2000s.
@@nickfoster9706 Yes, in the mid-90's it was said a lot. I'm the old lady now, but back then I was the young upstart and this old guy then (probably 5 years older than I am now) said it a lot. So I think it's even older than the 90's, unless he was trying to sound cool and made it cringe to us younguns.
I haven't seen someone that excited about BGP (y) very nice (y)
I'm so glad I found this. So sick of hearing boring, low quality audio with Indian accents
too true
I CAN'T STAND INDIANS TALKING
Well I'm sorry you are sick of boring indian accents teaching you stuff for free when you can get premium content at $10 in sites like Udemy. But no, you gotta youtube it and it turns out Indians literally manufacture engineers and create content for them to learn, while also posting them for free. So maybe if you were smart enough you wouldn't youtube that content and just buy a course.
@Mayank Kashyap. I hear you and I agree this is a negative comment about accent. English is not my first language but I do my best to communicate using what I believe is the most used language worldwide and whoever is willing to teach is doing us all a favour and we, in general, should be grateful. I don't appreciate criticism to accent solely. Let us focus on learning, shall we? There will always exist people that focus on something else rather than learning or getting the best of it. What can I say, other than I would rather see the glass half full. Enjoy, learn and have fun, always. Cheers.
Pocketkid2 if it hurts so much to hear Indian accent videos... simply stop listening to it in first few seconds.. People make videos for FREE to help other learners, why dont you simply pick up a book and read it then, instead of trying to find knowledge over youtube. I bet if you stay in technology field, you will hear more indian accents wherever you go... i am kind of sad and happy to read your comment, because whatever job you pick you will get to hear Indian accent....because we indians are way technically advanced :)
If all teachers were like you,i would do 3xCCIE's in a year!
exactly
I don't think I've ever watched a YT video with this genuine excitement.
Thanks - BGP should do that for anyone ;o)
best explanation ever.
Thank you Jeremy for the Video, hu-huh! it just wonderful and easy to understand, thanks a lot.
Others: On to the next video before it finishes
Me: Waiting for Jeremy to say "... I hope this has been informative for you and I'd like to thank you for viewing."
Who else was enjoying and understanding at the same time ;)
1:55 automagically... nice
Hey : this was fantastic: thanks! So enthusiastic too. Brought a smile to my face😊😊😊😊😊😊
I have learned so much with this video. Worth it watching it!
Love the way you explain.. It's like learning with fun..
Greta video. Would love to hear more detail about BGP!
DLink not a real router!?!!?!? Blasphemy!! LOL Kidding! I always feel smarter after watching my daily MicroNuggets...thanks Jeremy!
thx for give us an idea of how this masive protocol works
Superb!!....I''m going to learn BGP today...and this video was really inspiring :)
Excellent Jeremy! Thank you! One question: What about BGP security? How do network operators protect against BGP hacks?
Hey! That was a nice video. I like the way you explain concepts, its really easy to relate to. Can you dive deeper into BGP? Explain confederation and RRs?
Jeremy amazed me with you incredible tutorial !
Its funny becoz Im sitting inside CenturyLink and learning abt BGP. hehe
Great vid! The contents are solid and the style is perfect. Just great.
We're glad to hear you enjoyed it! Thanks for learning with us.
Absolutely great! It was very informative and fun, which helps when you're studying... in some moments you made me think of Wheatley from Portal2. Keep up the good work.
That was ...intense!
Hey Jeremy Great Video explained in fun and simple terms..
waiting for the macro-nugget, I like cbtnuggets. you guys rock
Loving these vids.. Its Always best when someone keeps it SIMPLE
You are a fantastic presenter Jeremy! Kudos for making learning somewhat arcane information fun!
We don't have plans at this time, but I'll pass on your request to our trainer liaison. The more requests we have for a topic the more likely it is to be completed.
". . .I used to have the blog Ciscoblog.com - before Cisco took it from me, but i'm not bitter much..." hahahahah
I owned ciscoblogger.com and they took it from me too. Sob
@@michaelflorida4303 Was there any compensation ?
how can they do that?
Holly cow, corporations gone mad about stealing our domains ? I owned AdobeFlash.com for ~15 years and they just won a claim days ago, bye bye 15 years of work.
Also PhotoshopFiles.com where I managed an 100 000 members community. Domains gone ! They are pending transfer now :/
@@fabianblog6809 , it is called an UDRP claim, basically big corporations make a claim that we used a copyrighted word of theirs, for example if you own "asite.com" Adobe can take it away from you because among other many words they also have copyright over the letter "A".
But it is "OK" because you go trough a mediation procedure, where a board of 1-3 mediators will decide for you. The ICANN approved mediators are all 100% corporate lawyers, for a living they advise the same corporations on how to protect their brands. So yes, you can guess what your chances are.
Oh, and you get to pay $1450 - $3000 if you want 3 members to decide instead of just one (default).
Awesome video🙌🏻 can you do a basic how to connect your isp to two peers video? 😁
Nice video! It feels like BGP is being a but undersnowed by protocols like TCP and IP because BGP mainly operates outside internal networks (and are often not used by programmers I guess). But it's really interesting to look into this :) Expecially the looking glass thingy is a real addition to the video :)
Great video and great explanation!
Your handwriting is pretty amazing....
Thanks Jeremy.
As always very entertaining and informative!
This is a Automagical explaination
in bgp. i have seen using route map.and prefix list.
please make one video.how.they are.related with each other
Jeremy you rock m8......... I wish you had created series of CCNA Security as keith barker put me to sleep :(
this is very good share about BGP... liked it
jeremy's the GOAT!
Great Audio thanks.
Coming here to understand more about Facebook outage
Thanks a lot Jeremy
I would need more and full video on bgp pls
Great bit - thanks Jeremy
Thank you for the video. Question: How large does a network to be in terms of the number of devices on it before you would start needing a BGP router? Or does BGP just get installed automatically on routers nowadays?
Nice. Thanks for making this video
Lol youtube puts this on my recommendation in event of facebook outage 😂
Thanks to Jeremy...
If I was to give advice it would be this, learn bgp from top to bottom. I rarely see ospf or EIGRP in real world routing and when I do it’s usually redistributed into bgp. Learn it!
"i don't mean to insult you by not calling them real routers, but they're not" lol perfect
Great explain so what is the writing write and draw picture program ?
very very nice video , ty so much
I need BGP Account chat me up +1(786)5295030
One question I have, how is IP assigned to the routes on service provider level. Who controls and makes sure that service provider cannot use an ip not assigned to it. In case of ip clash. Two routers having same ip.
Jeremy or CBTNuggets when we will get Cisco ISP Nuggets. Are you planning to do it guys????????? Awesome by the way Sir Jeremy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wow man, that is a great explanation and you are really funny. Congrats. Great video. :D
thanks
"...but i'm not bitter much" ...made me LOL!
Thank you.
one huge change in training; when referring to BGP they should replace the word 'route' with "PATH".
this guy just freaked me out. but good nugget tough
Really nice video #CBT Nuggets, Can i have a full description of BGP video from you...
Thank you
nice explanation bro
any idea what are the techniques for multiple ASes in an AS Path ?
can you explain announcing a public ip space on BGP - how does that work
Short and sweet :)
