I worked for Singapore Airlines for eight years in the 80s and left as a Leading Stewardess. Our training was at the Paya Lebar Cabin Crew Training Centre. The training, though rigorous, was very enjoyable as well. We were never spoken to in the way this grooming instructor did. She belittled her charges! Our grooming instructor was a well-groomed lady named Mavis, who was a former Miss Singapore and a makeup artiste. We showed each other mutual respect. I honestly hope this video was dramatised due to the fact that the film crew was on site. These ladies will be handling all sorts of difficult situations once they graduated and are flying full-time, and confidence is not built by being ‘talked down’ to. PS. Learning how to walk was never part of our deportment classes. Once we donned the kebaya, it is natural that one will walk somewhat elegantly, due to the design of the uniform. I joined in late 90's. I remember the trainer teach us how to walk in Kebaya (I myself found it weird at that time) but I am always grateful of SIA as it teaches me to be more ladylike (even my mom surprised of my progress everytime I came home from SIN)

@Home Home cabin crews shouldn't have to look like models to work. They're forcing women to change their appearance to look more attractive which doesn't respect women at all
@Home Home i- How does it make you feel more comfortable when your air hostesses are pretty? That's just a whole new level of creepy. There's a boundary between looking presentable and good for a flight and making women change the way they look to be pretty. In no world must you be pretty to conduct the duties of an air hostess. And calling the air hostesses that dont look "pretty" for you and the planes slums for that reason shows how you view women. Of course you have to look your best when representing such an airline, but the woman in the video degrades women and makes them change themselves to look "pretty". And making them "prettier" does not put them at a higher level period
Honestly SIA should update their makeup look. The eyeshadow colour just makes the entire look outdated. They should use more natural colours like brown.
A friend of mine who is currently with SIA said some girls get to wear brown on their eyes. It is decided by the grooming consultant based on each individual girl's skin tone. Some can't pull off blue so they are given brown.
There are only two eyeshadow colors are allowed which is blue and brown. Some get blue and some got the brown eyeshadow depends on their skin tone. But it will determine by the grooming consultant.
You are so wrong. She is one of the nicest people in the entire Singapore Airlines company. This is all for show, for media. For people like you to comment and the rest of the ding dongs on youtube to press the thumbs up button.
Oh my god who cares about how small your hair bun is or if your ears need to be hidden behind your hair. Im sure people who are travelling will be more focused on the journey!
Quite arguably, the Singapore Girls ARE the journey on a flight with Singapore Airlines. Unlike in the US, where air travel is so unpleasant because it’s so affordable to anybody who wants it - even those who are homeless, or on public assistance - a flight on Singapore Airlines is an experience in itself. A flight on SQ is not just one long, boring bus ride, with no food served, and with beverages served by fat, unkempt, burned out American flight attendants. The Singapore Girls, and the stellar service you receive most times from them is very much part of the journey.
Aves Raggiana so you’re saying unattractive and fat air stewardesses provide lower quality service than attractive and stick thin air stewardesses? Get your head out of your ass. It’s one thing to look presentable and tidy and another thing to change your appearance and do your hair in a way to ‘look younger’. Do you go to a snobby restaurant and insist for an attractive waitress? For crying out loud, passengers are probably more preoccupied with sleeping and planning their vacation that wondering about how high they should rank each stewardess on a scale of 1 to 10.
iCandybar No, YOU get YOUR head out of your ASS. You’ve not lived long enough to have earned the right to tell anybody to do anything. I worked a flight with an older lady flight attendant of mid-level seniority which at our company is about 35 years of service. She didn’t bother putting on make up, tying a scarf, putting on her uniform wings or combing her hair. She wore grey sweatpants with an elastic waist, a white button down blouse, and the only thing that would have identified her as a flight attendant and as an employee was her company ID badge which, naturally, she wore backwards. I would have complained about her appearance to our purser but on this trip, she WAS the purser. Later, as passengers were disembarking, at least one complained to my CA about the indifferent inflight service they received from her. On another trip, on the employee bus back to my car, a senior male flight attendant also boarded the employee bus, having just come back from London-Heathrow. Both of his black Reebok shoes were worn at the heels, AND the soles of both shoes had separated from their uppers: very visible to anybody even just casually observing. This guy worked an international flight looking like this. Later, this male flight attendant drove away in a car that couldn’t have been more than four years old. He could certainly have been able to afford a new pair of shoes. Neither of these fellow employees made ANY attempt to look at presentable. None at all. Whether SQ requires its girls to do makeup so that they look younger is entirely their decision, and whether Asian women of any age and shape wish to undergo that kind of constant scrutiny is also up to them. What you don’t seem to understand is that immaculately turned out, professional looking flight attendants, with their name badges clearly visibly, are pretty reliable indicators of the kind of service you can expect once the flight is underway. It’s NEVER a good sign when a slovenly flight attendant with dirt under their fingernails (I’ve seen that too, on a flight attendant working First Class; it’s disgusting) has their name and their ID badge concealed.
Expectation of customer? Returning mothers Lose the weight? Does this seem fair? I mean is the Upper class rich world really soo fixated on Flight attendants being slim and fit into uniform? This makes their flight experience better? Shouldnt it be safety and comfort that matters? And not how the stewardess fits in her uniform? Just food for thought!
No, only when they are fit and healthy, they can help others in the event of an accident. Like obese people are not given emergency seats because they are a threat to themselves and the passengers when the plane is in an unfortunate incident. Not everything is sexist. 🤦🏽♀️
I think being slim is helpful because in an airplane the aisles are pretty small and if you are slightly heavier when you walk down the aisles you will definetly disturb the passengers by bumping into them . And if your a male u dont have to worry about this becauss males have a narrower bottom compared to females.
vinceat852 lol do you know how much weight women gain during pregnancy? They do say they are giving them the option of losing weight. Obesity is obesity, no matter what the reason is. Educate yourself before commenting such petty things. If someone fat shames them, I would say they are sexist. They are not fat shaming.
I've flown well a few times, and I can attest that I have never once given a shit about what hand the attendant uses or what size their uniform is. They're humans who are being really helpful to you, that's all I need to know to be respectful enough not to care about that stuff.
The expectation of the customer? That's wild lol. The only thing I expect of my air hostess is her being nice to customers and knowing safety procedures.
Agreed. If there was an emergency on board I would be more concerned with the flight attendants' ability to evacuate everyone safely than the size of their hair bun or eyeshadow colour. The flight attendants from the Miracle on the Hudson flight in NYC were all in their 50s when it happened and they managed to get everyone off the plane safely and I doubt they were worried about how their makeup looked that day
Lisbeth P there’s a difference between meeting the average standard, and going beyond it. that is why SQ is not your average airline and is top in the world. there must be a price to pay to stand out.
@@justin-pd7iu SQ is just silly and obviously it doesn't stand out as much as it thinks. I didn't know about them until this show...Knowledge is what makes you best at anything, and accommodation makes you memorable. I don't know ANYONE, who looks at a flight attendant and says: Hum🤔 her hair bun is way to small, or she she should do her makeup so. You shouldn't sacrifice reasonableness for vanity.
Lisbeth P just because you don’t know about something doesn’t mean it is not famous. SQ is literally the second best airline in the world by rating, it is a fact. go look up singapore airlines.
Lisbeth P and just because this video doesn’t show, doesn’t mean they are stupid. They do not just “look” good, they offer the best airline services in the industry. You are just being a frog in the well.
Lisbeth P and your youtube playlist is literally filled with hair design ideas, which is meant for aesthetic reasons because people LIKE and ADMIRE it. the air stewardess’ looks are important as well.
My sister works for Singapore airlines at first class and she says it’s a fun job but the training program was very frustrating and time consuming but in the end it was worth it
Nope. I don't work for Singapore Airlines but I do work for another airline. During initial training, you will not know if you get the job until the very last day of training when you pass final exams. It's part of the game. Some girls in my class went through the full training (ours is eight weeks) just to fail on the last day. Also, as mentioned in the video, grooming standards are also talked about early on so that instructors have time to see if you can respect them day after day or not. Becoming cabin crew is tough and you have to really want it.
Regular SQ flyer here. I feel sorry for the Singapore girls, and their unhappiness sometimes get reflected in their services. On a few occasions, I notice how easily annoyed they can get with some of the passengers! I suspect some of them are starving themselves.
Lol. Yes. Have you seen a SQ Girl during lunch. Peeling the chicken skins off the chicken with the bare hands, not even eating the rice except a fewwww grains. And whats left is literally 80 percent of the meal and they wont even buy a drink but ask to take a sip of yours instead just to save up for their next purse.
@Home Home how is that even related? No. I merely got invited to eat lunch together with a SQ girl. And some other office people. Anyway. Dont take my words for it. But i have a few eyewitness. Why? My words got too much truth for u to handle... ?? Aiyah.. At least you havent met my friend who was a nutritionist for SQ girls.. She had to witness the real deal! I only witness a few weeks! I
@Home Home i dont think my experience is evennnn similar to yours whatsoever though.. Because the girl i knew also did work for private jets so maybe different SES level... Im only saying maayyybeee. Dont get insulted or whatevs. Cos i really dont know.
@Home Home i think its funny to ask the question you asked because the reverse was really what was happening. The whole reason i had lunch was because this ex SQ girl was trying to apply for a job in my field which was basically just the design field. So me and my two other colleagues, which comprised of a quantity surveyor and a naval engineer, and myself a trained architect, were having lunch with her. Not to nitpick because i hardly think all SQ girls are like this. Of course you have to maintain your figure. But you also need energy. To lift the luggages for those weak armed passengers and still look glowing. Part of the suggested diet was definitely the liquid diet which comprises of fruits blended into a liquid. And this ex SQ associate of ours made it a very blatant fact! So all those hours of trainings for her kind of just bled into normal life and us normal human beings were confronted with this SQ culture. She even encouraged us to eat her fruit so as to not feel so alone in her dieting. And if she drank teh she only drank two mouthfuls. She eventually left the field though. I think she couldnt let go of the life SQ offered her.
@Home Home i think some people just have a better metabolism. I know some of the sq pilots also avoid alcohol. Their pay is high but agree it used to be higher.
Unfortunate consequence of branding. SIA based their entire brand image on the look of the "Singapore Girl" in the 70s so the somewhat outdated and conservative rules remain.
As much as I love the Singapore Airlines product, I doubt anything in this video would be legal in Western societies. In 4 minutes they managed to break several U.S. federal anti-discrimination laws. It's fascinating to see what goes on behind the scenes but scary to think of all the discrimination applicants and employees go through for our flying comfort.
@@amateurdraw9524 Whether or not a company or individual breaks a law is not the issue. The mark of a truly civilized state under the rule of law however is whether or not there are consequences and that they are enforced. In this case, since the airline broke no law (in the United States airlines maintain the discretion to overbook and remove passengers) an out of court settlement was reached.
@@CurtisCT The reason why an out of court settlement was reached in the first place was because United did break an oversale rule. Yes, overbooking is legal however, there are rules to facilitate such situations. "United submitted no evidence that it provided the written notice to Dr. Dao and his wife at the airport. We consider United's failure to initially calculate the proper DBC amount for one passenger and its failure to provide the required written notice to Dr. Dao and his wife to be violations ofthe Department's oversales rule." - extracted from dot letter. @@amateurdraw9524 I'm not sure how this relates to the topic of Singapore Airlines or why you feel the need to pick a fight with me. I don't run the DOT and neither does anyone in my family. If there was a violation of law, it would have been prosecuted. There wasn't and so no legal action was necessary. A civil action was however settled out of court. Come on the girl next door IS singapore girl, thats what makes singapore singapore. I know its a joke, but why are our societies so depended with artificial makeup to promote beauty?
those who never flies SQ will criticize the efforts shown in this vid bc they never know how it feels to fly with them. their manners, their attitude and how they handle the customers are top quality and so far sq are my favs airlines.
Yes. Full of aunties and ah ma way beyond their “use-by” date belittling young girls and telling them they are not up to standard. 🤷🏽♂️ Clearly they avoid the mirror all day to get that kind of audacity.
Casey Foo she is right about her advice because she’s been in makeup industry for years and im a cabin crew too and she rly is going along the guidelines thats why she has to be strict
Well if i was in these girl’s position, I wouldn’t feel bad if my makeup or hair style is being criticised. Actually I would love to hear more criticism, and would actually listen to their advice. Being in the industry for so long, I think these “aunties” clearly have the audacity to regulate standards. Image is part of their uniform. I think cabin crews are pretty much aware of it, the moment they sign their contracts, they know they have to oblige with any of their company’s image regulations. However, if one of the recruiters/staff would tell me I’m too ugly to work for them, of course I wouldn’t let it and believe it. If the standards affect your mental health/psychological health, then you should think twice.
Shes being realistic what.... Surely maximum 7 cm bun is realistic. Do you want a girl with a da pao or char siew pau on their head. And honestly the last girl hairstyle was like. Secondary school or ITE girl going for hospitality course. I think if she was gonna not cut her hair she would literally look like a SHATEC grad. Just cut lah. Its just hair. Not your skin or getting nose surgery or what have u.
I’ve wanted to become a Cabin Crew for a very long time, since aviation has been my life-long passion. My goal is do eventually end up working at an Asian carrier, and to me, Singapore Airlines would really be the best airline I could ever dream to work at! I’ve even been taking mandarin classes for the past 6 months to be able to work in Asia! But, there’s only one thing that turns me down about this whole cabin crew carrier. I feel like the selection (especially in Asia) is done based on the appearance of the applicant. I have no doubt about being able to perform all the duties requested to work the job, all my worries come down to the aesthetic aspect. I have a pretty strong problem with acne as of now, and as I am sure it will all go away with time, it will for sure leave it’s marks. Another thing is, I am a typical Canadian: large and tall! While I am not fat, I just have a larger than usual body type, and seeing all these slim flight attendants surely doesn’t help my worries haha. If there is anyone who reads this, that could help me get rid of my worries, please don’t hesitate to respond to this comment! I would really love to hear from a person who knows the industry in Singapore/Asia more than I do. Cheers!
I feel u, and i'm asian, this is why i always prefer other airlines outside asia. Sure we should be fit but that's for work not to please the customers.
I have been a cabin crew member for a major US Airline and I have been a part of the recruitment team and initial flight attendant training and even though I LOVE SQ and their flight attendant I find this video APPALLING not to mentioned a bit degrading
While I agree some of the standards are over the top I do wish US carriers would go back to having some standards. I would love if grooming classes were brought back here.
thank god for that. An employer telling me to cut my hair is an employer who’s getting stabbed with the scissors. I’ll smile as I do it, just like a good little flight attendant should
This video is getting too much unwarranted hate! This is a world class airline and their cabin crew need to reflect that! They are paid significantly more than the industry standard and hold a prestigious job. If they cannot meet the standards nobody is saying that they cant be cabin crew they can always work for another airline
Okay, as much as I love Singapore Airlines and their exemplary service, I do not agree with some of their rules and standards for their female cabin staff. So much sexism going on! Expecting them to "lose the weight" after childbirth? What about just giving them bigger sized uniforms? There are airlines that offer their pregnant cabin staff maternity uniforms! And that grooming instructor was awful! She's not strict; she's just downright cruel and rude! There are less senior and high ranking female cabin crew staff because these rules have made it impossible for them to climb the ranks! It's the 21st century; things need to change.
Actually Ms Amy Lim is a very nice lady and she is well loved by most crew. She is very kind and her job goes beyond the appearance, she also cares about the trainees and whether they eat right, sleep well. She is just doing the tough job of relaying bad news to crew on behalf of the airline.
Who the heck cares on their hair and face...when I sit economy or biz class, all I care is the service and price. I know there's a standard image for the airline but cabin crew are not celebs on air...their priority is to ensure the comfort and safety of all passengers...pfft!
1:24 I don't think the men stay on because they don't have to worry abt putting on weight after childbirth... The men stay because they're not getting married anyway if you know what I mean... and I think you do... 💅🏻
Home Home lol stop replying to all the comments with the same few points. Just say you’re sexist and go. A WOMAN’S APPEARANCE DOES NOT AFFECT THE QUALITY OF THE SERVICE PROVIDED :) if you want to pay for attractive ladies, go to geylang and get a prostitute instead. Air Stewardesses are not entitled to be your inflight eye candy
Home Home Misogynistic much?. Have you ever worked For BA or Have Been interviewed by any American carriers. With Them, Safety Comes First and is a main Priority rather than how to do your hair and make up. Yes appearance is important while in uniform. But cutting girls because of their weight and what they look like is a bit fucked.
Majestie Scarlette Singapore Airlines cabin crew go through 14 weeks of training. 12 weeks is spent on safety including first aid. The remainder is on service and grooming. AA I believe only go through 7 weeks of safety with no emphasis on service or grooming.
Maybe that's the reason why BA is a sad hollow shell of itself ever since the stopped their Concorde flights and SQ will enjoy a few extra years staying with the big boys and girls at the top
"you look like a young mother-in-law hiding in a bun" wth? i think she looks beautiful why are they forcing girls to cut their hair to appear more "well-groomed"? plus, thats only the makeup artist's own personal view, may not be the views of all the customers on board
i don’t really care tbh i wouldn’t mind getting an average dressed lady without makeup to be serving me in the plane. it’s sad seeing all these women going through so much hardship and perfectionism just to serve the people on board for a few hours
Makeup and hair crew requirements for females is so sexist lmao. I flew United and the flight attendant dude had hair down to his back, but the girls all had to pound on the makeup. If someone’s serving me coffee they don’t have to be forced serve me looks. It’s an exhausting job as it is.
It has nothing to do with a lack of mental tenacity and everything to do with Western anti-discrimination laws. From a legal point of view, it's just not possible to achieve what Singapore Airline does in western societies.
@Home Home It's illegal in most western countries, certainly in the United States, to discriminate on the basis of looks. It's also very illegal to discriminate on the basis of sex, ethnicity or skin color. The above video actually confirms what has been suspected for a long time - Singapore only hires exceptionally good looking, very fair-skinned, unmarried women in their early twenties as flight attendants. Such a selection policy would be impossible in most western countries, in fact the U.S. Civil Rights Act of 1964 specifically forbids every single one of the above mentioned practices. I for one am very happy that we as Americans, although not a perfect country, have at least come this far, where candidates of every age, gender and race have the same chance of becoming flight attendants and don't have to fit some outdated, sexist and discriminatory idea of the subservient, pretty waitress in the sky. We've been there before in the 50's and 60's and we've decided to leave that part of our history behind. The first duty of every flight attendant is safety, not to provide visual pleasure.
@@CurtisCT "The first duty of every flight attendant is safety." A noble sentiment indeed. You'd be appalled at the number of US flight attendants I've worked with who hide behind that phrase in order to get away with doing as little work as possible. It shows too, in their messy, uncombed hair, hair that's let down and covering their faces, their nose piercings and tattoos, their scuffed shoes and worn heels, their missing ties and scarves - the list goes on and on. The freedoms that we have to "dress for comfort" or dress as we please when at work, has been abused in the US airline industry. It's sad how shabby we look compared to airline cabin crews from most of the rest of the world, but especially Singapore Airlines.
@@CurtisCT okay, we get it... You just want to look like a justice warrior == This isn't even a racial or gender issue and yet you have to make it seem like one.

I'd say the most beautiful woman I've ever seen in my life was a stewardess for Singapore Airlines. She was just drop-dead gorgeous and so elegant and poised. Singapore Airlines really knows how to pick beautiful women for their cabin crew.
If there is a shortage of cabin crew, no flight and loss of money for airline. The USA doesn’t care about beauty, the USA cares about safety, which should be main topic. Also, your uniforms are very pretty but they don’t look like flight attendants, more like restaurant hosts.
In awe that asia still lives in that era of body shaming is acceptable. Even how they look like is outspokenly criticised instead of embraced and all about self love and empowerment. A friend of mine who is currently with SIA said some girls get to wear brown on their eyes. It is decided by the grooming consultant based on each individual girl's skin tone. Some can't pull off blue so they are given brown.
I think they use blue to look more traditional . Thry dont want to look modern , they want to look elegant , but young .
Ikr 🤪🤪🤪
There are only two eyeshadow colors are allowed which is blue and brown. Some get blue and some got the brown eyeshadow depends on their skin tone. But it will determine by the grooming consultant.

Except most of them are ex stewardesses who have went far enough, done more than enough and some are even literal plank owners of SQ.
You are so wrong. She is one of the nicest people in the entire Singapore Airlines company.

Oh my god who cares about how small your hair bun is or if your ears need to be hidden behind your hair. Im sure people who are travelling will be more focused on the journey!
She even said the other girl has too much baby hair wtf

@@BlackRose85789are you uncivilised?

😃😃
The crew know the criteria on application, interview and recruitment. If they pass the course they get to fly.
I don’t quite understand why that last girl has to cut her hair.

For a 'world class airline', they sure have some third world mentality.

Which is why Singapore Airlines standards are better..
Yes, and remind me again how many of those laws did united airlines - an american airline, break when they actually beat up a paying passenger?
@@amateurdraw9524 Whether or not a company or individual breaks a law is not the issue. The mark of a truly civilized state under the rule of law however is whether or not there are consequences and that they are enforced. In this case, since the airline broke no law (in the United States airlines maintain the discretion to overbook and remove passengers) an out of court settlement was reached.
@@CurtisCT The reason why an out of court settlement was reached in the first place was because United did break an oversale rule. Yes, overbooking is legal however, there are rules to facilitate such situations. "United submitted no evidence
that it provided the written notice to Dr. Dao and his wife at the airport. We consider United's failure
to initially calculate the proper DBC amount for one passenger and its failure to provide the required
written notice to Dr. Dao and his wife to be violations ofthe Department's oversales rule." - extracted from dot letter.
Furthermore, upon discovering this violations, your department of transportation refused to enforce any punishment in this violation that is clearly admitted by the agency. Therefore, contradicting everything you just said.
The rule of law prevailed and United learned a valuable lesson in how to properly treat its customers. This is more accountability than we see in most countries. Apart from that, I'm not sure what else I can contribute to this topic.

However, if one of the recruiters/staff would tell me I’m too ugly to work for them, of course I wouldn’t let it and believe it. If the standards affect your mental health/psychological health, then you should think twice.

Western carriers and their flight attendants fall extremely short when Compared with Asian carriers because they just do not have the mental tenacity.

Run a customer survey. Let the customer speak for themselves.
Humans age, they put on weight, they hunch, they die. NOTHING is permanent.
That’s why they are one of the best 👌
If there is a shortage of cabin crew, no flight and loss of money for airline. The USA doesn’t care about beauty, the USA cares about safety, which should be main topic. Also, your uniforms are very pretty but they don’t look like flight attendants, more like restaurant hosts.
1:25 holy crap, what a disgrace 😂 hell no would I ever fly with such a blatantly sexist airline
In awe that asia still lives in that era of body shaming is acceptable. Even how they look like is outspokenly criticised instead of embraced and all about self love and empowerment. Especially when the trainer can’t even live what she preach, I’m just saying. 😉 It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it girl
Walk right? Did I hear how these people teach the cabin crews how to walk??
I Love flying SQ! the crew is always extraordinary!
1:02 i like girl next door better
To be honest I would love to have objective feedback like that rather than the fluff they tell me at my corporate job
The make-up teacher must be so frustrated grooming all these young beautiful women whilst she, looking like a mean, angry and frustrated piggy... char bo chin jia kana sai !!!
Where is Kermit when you need him? Take back your girl Kermit, she’s out of control. Lolz
This training is bullshit . Nobody wants beautiful airhostess but kind, helpful and know her job.
Shailina Mak agreed
Like telling a lady “you’re too old for this job” “you’re just too fat for this job” “you’re not attractive enough to do the job” really ?!?
1:37 ??? lol really??? customers or just for certain men?? I think majority of us just expect our flight attendant to know safety procedures and be friendly. honestly couldnt care less what sizes of uniform they wear
the hair and makeup consultant has what i call the classic 'singapore airlines accent' lol. the over pronunciation of the 'r' consonants (sometimes even when the word doesn't have it) and the awkward cadence is very obvious- you can tell when she hams it up for the camera and when she drops it to speak to the trainees.
