  • During the Blizzard of ‘78, the oil tanker Global Hope ran aground on Coney Island Ledge in Salem Sound. Despite freezing snow, 60 mph winds, and 20 foot waves, the Coast Guard sent out multiple vessels in an attempt to rescue the crew.
Regrettably, the pilot boat Can Do perished at sea along with her 5 member crew.
Salem radio control operator Warren Andrews was assisting that night and recorded the audio from his home.
I spent about 20 hours trying to remove the static from the original recording (trust me it was a lot worse than what you hear). I’ve also added pictures to help keep track of who is transmitting. For accuracy, I’ve searched long and hard for pictures of the very people, vessels and locations that were involved in this heroic effort.

Thanks for listening. Do you happen to have any pics of Warren? Couldn't find anything but that postcard in my research...
