I don't see you mention this but one thing that modern DSLR doesn't have is that D70 can sync with the flash up to 1/8000 seconds if you are using non TTL flash. No need fancy HSS flash etc. Just bring your old Vivitar and you can fill flash your model in bright daylight and still able to use large aperture.
My first DSLR I bought in 2010 from my pro photographer friend. It's taken fantastic photos then and now. The IQ on a 6mpx camera using crop is amazing.
Looking back at the photos of my kids I took with this camera and the kit lens from way back when, they still look amazing by today’s standard. I have made 8x10 pictures out of those files and am very sure one can make 16x20 prints out of them without significant image deterioration if one knows how to use photo editing apps well. The Nikon D70 has a 6 megapixel sensor. It always makes me think why we need anything more than 12 megapixels. I am proud to still hold on to this humble camera for the very sweet memories of my life.
I bought the D70 early after it came out. My earliest pictures are from May of 2004. I purchased the kit set-up w/ 18-70 lens for $1299. At the time this camera was a brief source of envy among my work friends. CCD sensor allowed me to photograph a spinning propeller at 1/4000s being completely frozen during a flight. Loved it to bits and still own it today. Currently it has 38k shutter actuations and is still in working order. Last year had to clean the rubber grip with rubbing alcohol.
OK, man - I subscribed. Thank you for posting. You remind me of a photography prof I had back in the '60s. Great class. I had a Voightlander. Class included how to theory operate the camera, develop the film, and then go down to the Photo Center and create final prints. No longer have the Voightlander, but still have my old Mamiya C22. Fast forward to now: I've been "voluntold" that I'm the photographer for the wedding of my granddaughter next weekend. Will be using my wife's old Nikon D70S and my slightly newer Canon G16, along with a nice tripod from B&H. Just brushing up on photo tips. Man, I don't want to blow this.
I bought a Nikon D70s back in 2005. It was my first digital camera, up until that point I was shooting film (I still do). It wasn't until 2013 that I upgraded to a then new Canon 5D3. I took that Nikon camera all over the world with me, and it was great. The images still look great all these years later.
Another great video, thanks Carmine. Another cool thing about the D70 is the 1/500s flash sync speed, and according to Wikipedia flash sync works right up to 1/8000s.

Had D40 for years and I believe it’s got the same sensor as D70/s. Only thing I miss in D40 is the lack of auto focus with D type screw drive lenses! But D70 has it!

The S5 is my #1 fave amongst the dozens of others from I've used. Is there anything to gain in terms of image quality with any of those Nikons you mentioned except with the FF advantages, and focus abilities?
hi carmine i'm from italy, i also have a d70 and i was impressed, i already have a d300 and a d3200 but the ccd sensor is a whole other thing, the colors, the dynamic range , tonal passages and the three-dimensionality of the image are clearly superior, in some ways it really seems to shoot on film, also flash sync 1/500, shutter speed 1/8000...really a great camera....and all in all 6 mpx are more than satisfactory, following the d70 I also took a sony a290 with 14 mpx ccd ... an entry level of 2010 but with a much higher quality than today's entry level ... I think we switched to cmos for a matter of costs and the impossibility of taking high bursts as the market asked for in those years ... nothing more, anyway for these reasons and thanks the mirrorless trend today you can buy truly extraordinary reflex cameras at ridiculous prices...
Just as it is with many old film cameras (Nikons, Canons, Minoltas and whatnot), there are remarkable values in early DSLRs available today. No one who wants to shoot seriously needs to let budget get in the way. For a hundred or two hundred bucks, you can go to town! Ten years ago I got my D200 for $350 and now it's c. $100.
Was just thinking back to my first DSLR, the D70 and how I loved it. Sadly, shutter issues took it out of commission early in it's life and I sold it as-is and got a D90. Now shooting with a D500, but I thought just the other day, "man, that old D70, CCD, the flash sync, I bet they're super cheap now, why not get one!" Looking at them now.

I recently received a FREE D70 from a friend which is my second CCD sensor (I have a D60 also). I found a D100 with a Nikon 24-85 lens at a thrift store for a whopping $4. Unfortunately the D100 is shot but the lens I'll put on the D70. (I still have my D3100 , D7100, D5600 and I'm wanting to downsize lol) Best wishes Duane
Excellent video and information. I have never used a D70. Incredible image! I inherited a Nikon D50 with the back looking very much the same as the D70. The D50 also had the same film like look. I have countless 6mp pics in my archives from my Minolta-Sony Days. As you know, but some may not, 6mp was as big as the files got for even pro cameras early 2000s.
The Nikon D50, has a high performance, 6.1 Effective Megapixel, Nikon DX Format, CCD Image Sensor: The D50 delivers vivid color and sharp detail with high resolution. :)
To me, the D50 yields even better pictures than the D70s. The D70 is a bit underexposed as the D50 pinpoints everytime. Only thing worth mentioning of the D50, is the one wheel instead of two for the D70 (aperture, shutter speed).
I did get one for free , a friend saved it from the bin.( with a 28-85mm f3.5/4.5, not a bad lens either!) . Just as the D200 , CCD is something special.. !!! If you want this "feel" of realism in CMOS, I did only find that in a D800E ( more a Kodachome 64 "feel"), D3X( more a Fuji velvia 50 "feel") .. Most CMOS sensor I dislike.. It misses the "dirty" colour spectrum if you know what i mean.. CMOS , especialy in the early days has only the basis colors RGB that dominate the image for the most. , It has not that grade of the delicate shades, deeper blacks ( not just very dark brown/blue/purple), pure whites and the dirtymixcolours like grey/green, greyblue etc. and pastels thanks for this video and the D200 is in service here and will never go

Mine was more like 60USD, but that was with everything as when bought new; all cables, Nikon box, CD software, 5k shutter count, the books, strap ... I keep my Nikons, not a long time, (bought my FM2 in '82 and still works for film) I keep them for life.

All of my equipment is Pentax, so it means starting a third system (I also have some very old Olympus stuff that I use quite often....) What are your thoughts??

I bought a used D70s from a local electronics exchange store in town a few weeks ago for GBP35 or around USD42. I also have a D40 I bought new many years ago from a photo store in town that has since closed down, for about half price. Soneone had dropped it and broken the kit lens plastic mount. The shop removed the battery and sold the remains for just over GBP100 with about 4 shutter actuations. I had a spare battery at home, the part to fix the lens cost only a few pounds from Nikon UK and it took under an hour for me to make the repair even though i didn't really need the lens. Happy shooting, everyone

The nice thing about buying a used D70 is they probably weren't used by a photography pro and will have a lots of life left in them. You'll be surprised at how good the image quality is with only 6 mb files.....and your photo editing won't stall your laptop too much.
I just picked up a pair of Nikon bodies a D70 and a D80 for $50 for the pair neither have more than 20k actuations. the funny thing is the guy who sold them to me just spent $2700 on a brand new Nikon camera, just to take family pictures. He's not a pro or even a semi pro just a weekend shutterbug. he bought both these bodies years ago new and barely used them over the years, they look flawless too... Grabbed a couple prime lenses and a couple zooms on eBay for under a hundred bucks for all four and now i have a pair of knock around cameras for $150 bucks...
I have a canon EOS Rebel T6i for years with 18 to 55MM lens. I recently got a Nikon D70 for like but it's not working. The battery is shot, the compact flash card reader inside isn't working and there's a deep scratch in lens off the 18 to 70 MM. What should I do?

Would the D and G lenses autofocus with the D70? Why pick one over the other? I heard one make more audible noise than the other. New to these cameras and photography. I need autofocus to work. My current Tamron lens AF doesn’t work. I appreciate it! 😁
I recently bought one of these at a yard sale. No lens. So when I look at a lens how can I tell if it will work on this camera? In other words how can I tell what mount it has?
Please read this; With the exception of the 2 specialty lenses made for the Nikon F3AF, and the lenses made for the Pronea APS camera, all AF Nikkors will function with metering on the D70. Currently there are 3 different 35mm AF Nikon mount designations, AF Nikkor, AF-D Nikkor, and AF-G Nikkor. All of these 35mm AF Nikkors will work with the meter on the D70, the early AF Nikkor lenses do not have the distance information circuit so they will impose some minor restrictions when shooting flash. Other Nikon AF mounts are the IX and DX lenses. The IX lenses were made for the Nikon Pronea APS cameras and WILL DAMAGE OR DESTROY the mirror on the D70, NEVER MOUNT AN IX LENS ON THE D70. The DX lenses were designed for the D70 and other Nikon DSLR's and function perfectly. Second, look at the chrome mounting flange on the non Nikon lenses. If they are stamped "N/AI" they can be safely mounted on the D70 but the light meter in the camera will not work. If they do not have "N/AI" stamped on the mounting flange or anywhere else on the lens, then DO NOT attempt to mount the lens on the D70. There is a minimum aperture post on the body of the D70 that can be damaged by mounting an early style Non-AI Nikon mount lens. BTW, "N/AI" means "Nikon AI", the earlier style lenses were either stamped with the letter "N" or nothing at all. Also, the 3 zoom lenses are basically junk, on ebay they are worth only about 5 to 10 dollars and they do lack in optical quality. I believe that the 85mm f2 Nikkor was only made in the Nikon AI or AIS mount. To confirm that it is an AI, or AIS, lens there are 3 simple checks. First is to look at the meter coupling prong, or "rabbit ear". If it is the later "wire frame" style with openings on each side of the centrat notch, it is the correct "rabbit ear" for an AI style lens. Second, look at the aperture ring at the rear of the lens, it should have 2 rows of aperture numbers engraved on it with one row using smaller numbers. The third test is to look at the rear surface of the aperture ring that faces the camera body. It should be "lumpy" with protrusions sticking out at various points. If the lens exhibits all 3 of these features it is a Nikon AI lens and is safe to mount on the D70. This particular version of the Nikon 85mm is a decent lens but it is not quite as sharp as the current 85mm f1.8, or the 85mm f1.8 that was produced just prior to the 85mm f2. It's no "dog" so if you get a really good price, buy it. PS, the only difference between the AI and the AIS mount is one small notch milled in the lens mounting flange. Since only the Nikon FA and FG took advantage of the AIS feature, it's not something that you have to concern yourself about. Last thing to note. The only manual focus Nikon lenses that WILL meter with the D70 are the "P" series, or lenses that have been "chipped" which are very rare. Currently this means the Nikon 500mm f4 Nikkor-P and the 45mm f2.8 Nikkor-P. "Chipping" a lens is a custom modification where the electronic "chip" from a junked AF Nikkor is transplanted into a manual focus lens. This is done at the lens owner's request, and cost, and these owners tend ot keep their "chipped" lens and not sell them, it is why they are very rare. I have an old 135mm f3.5 Nikkor that I have been debating about getting "chipped", since it costs about 100 dollars I am still debating.
Gotta FG camera, but they took my KodaChrome away .... But - The more I watch tube about this one MAYBE it will be ok. Sorry to ask but your shots (what was shown) were jpeg, RAW or Studio edited? This even (D70) has a printer direct setting. Mine arrived yesterday - waiting for a FlashCard now - stupid me -

How does that lens compare to the Nikon 85mm f1.8 G AF-S? I plan to buy one for use on my Nikon D60.

I have a canon EOS Rebel T6i for years with 18 to 55MM lens. I recently got a Nikon D70 for like but it's not working. The battery is shot, the compact flash card reader inside isn't working and there's a deep scratch in lens off the 18 to 70 MM. What should I do?

Would the D and G lenses autofocus with the D70? Why pick one over the other? I heard one make more audible noise than the other. New to these cameras and photography. I need autofocus to work. My current Tamron lens AF doesn’t work. I appreciate it! 😁

I recently bought one of these at a yard sale. No lens. So when I look at a lens how can I tell if it will work on this camera? In other words how can I tell what mount it has?
Please read this;
With the exception of the 2 specialty lenses made for the Nikon F3AF, and the lenses made for the Pronea APS camera, all AF Nikkors will function with metering on the D70. Currently there are 3 different 35mm AF Nikon mount designations, AF Nikkor, AF-D Nikkor, and AF-G Nikkor. All of these 35mm AF Nikkors will work with the meter on the D70, the early AF Nikkor lenses do not have the distance information circuit so they will impose some minor restrictions when shooting flash. Other Nikon AF mounts are the IX and DX lenses. The IX lenses were made for the Nikon Pronea APS cameras and WILL DAMAGE OR DESTROY the mirror on the D70, NEVER MOUNT AN IX LENS ON THE D70. The DX lenses were designed for the D70 and other Nikon DSLR's and function perfectly.
Second, look at the chrome mounting flange on the non Nikon lenses. If they are stamped "N/AI" they can be safely mounted on the D70 but the light meter in the camera will not work. If they do not have "N/AI" stamped on the mounting flange or anywhere else on the lens, then DO NOT attempt to mount the lens on the D70. There is a minimum aperture post on the body of the D70 that can be damaged by mounting an early style Non-AI Nikon mount lens. BTW, "N/AI" means "Nikon AI", the earlier style lenses were either stamped with the letter "N" or nothing at all. Also, the 3 zoom lenses are basically junk, on ebay they are worth only about 5 to 10 dollars and they do lack in optical quality.
I believe that the 85mm f2 Nikkor was only made in the Nikon AI or AIS mount. To confirm that it is an AI, or AIS, lens there are 3 simple checks. First is to look at the meter coupling prong, or "rabbit ear". If it is the later "wire frame" style with openings on each side of the centrat notch, it is the correct "rabbit ear" for an AI style lens. Second, look at the aperture ring at the rear of the lens, it should have 2 rows of aperture numbers engraved on it with one row using smaller numbers. The third test is to look at the rear surface of the aperture ring that faces the camera body. It should be "lumpy" with protrusions sticking out at various points. If the lens exhibits all 3 of these features it is a Nikon AI lens and is safe to mount on the D70. This particular version of the Nikon 85mm is a decent lens but it is not quite as sharp as the current 85mm f1.8, or the 85mm f1.8 that was produced just prior to the 85mm f2. It's no "dog" so if you get a really good price, buy it. PS, the only difference between the AI and the AIS mount is one small notch milled in the lens mounting flange. Since only the Nikon FA and FG took advantage of the AIS feature, it's not something that you have to concern yourself about.
Last thing to note. The only manual focus Nikon lenses that WILL meter with the D70 are the "P" series, or lenses that have been "chipped" which are very rare. Currently this means the Nikon 500mm f4 Nikkor-P and the 45mm f2.8 Nikkor-P. "Chipping" a lens is a custom modification where the electronic "chip" from a junked AF Nikkor is transplanted into a manual focus lens. This is done at the lens owner's request, and cost, and these owners tend ot keep their "chipped" lens and not sell them, it is why they are very rare. I have an old 135mm f3.5 Nikkor that I have been debating about getting "chipped", since it costs about 100 dollars I am still debating.
