Nice to see the guy running the shovel had a mask on. Have no idea how he could just sit there and breath that much coal dust? No idea what that machine cutting the coal is but it sure lacked in getting the coal on the belt. I guess something is better then nothing though. Brutal, just brutal. Glad someone took the time to capture this, to get to see something I have never seen before.
The machine is an AB15 Longwall coal cutter(similar to the AB15 Arc Wall cutter used for driving roadways at the same pit). They were used back in the 1950's by the coal board ( maybe earlier ) and were known as "the widow maker" because of the dust produced. When the Coal Board moved on to more modern equipment private mines , such as Blenkinsopp , would buy them. This video was taken in the 80's or early 90's.
Originally opened in the 1800's. Re opened privately in the 1980's , sold to coal board / R J Budge in the 1990's , re-purchased privately and eventually closed in 2002.

We used one of these in the private mine I worked at.
Earning you're coin on the hand filling days. Dust suppression zero.
We're these pit's run by the coal board or were they run by the miner's .

And not run by the miners.
