    I think Jacob Jensen was more of an Industrial Designer. But he worked many years with Bang & Olufsen and have bene featured on MOMA in NYC and received a ton of prizes and was instrumental in developing the design at B&O - which is still in use today.

  • @donjohnstone3707

    I am pretty sure it's an alnico magnet on that woofer. I have a pair of Goodmans Mezzo SL speakers, with a later version of those SEAS HO87 tweeters and 10in Goodmans aluminium alloy cast frame mid/woofers, which are dated 1975. I recapped the crossovers with equivalent Dayton metalized polypropylene caps and they sound very good. Back in the late 1970's a cousin of mine bought a new B&O system which was the Beomaster 1900 receiver, 3way S45 speakers and Beogram turntable. Back then, it looked very futuristic and sounded excellent to my young ears and I understood why they were so desirable and expensive.

    • @Munakas-wq3gp
      @Munakas-wq3gp Місяць тому +1

      B&O has always been more design than actual performance. Nice looking products with ok performance but can't compete with actual hifi products.

    • @donjohnstone3707
      @donjohnstone3707 27 днів тому

      B&O speaker quality through the 1960's and 70's were OK but not consistently good. Some were better than others, as they made a wide range of speakers to compliment their many different systems and price points. At least they mostly used good quality speaker components from SEAS, Peerless and Philips, despite the boxes and crossovers being rather cheap and basic.

    • @Munakas-wq3gp
      @Munakas-wq3gp 27 днів тому

      B&O was definitely on to something with the introduction of anechoic rooms for measurement, but on those early days the importance of the power response and controlled directivity wasn't fully understood. A speaker that measures perfectly in anechoic room is simple to produce - but it may or may not sound good in a normal room. This is because when you listen outside nearfield, about 80% of the sound comes to your ears from the reflections instead of the direct sound. That's why it's very important to design the speaker to either minimise reflections through controlled directivity or at least control the reflections so that the power curve of the speaker is nice and evenly sloped. And coincidentally that's why room acoustics is also so important factor in the final outcome. Simple optimizations with the speaker placement (making sure speakers are placed symmetrically in the room and measuring room modes in listening position) help a lot. Most people disregard acoustic treatments because they're ugly and expensive. But that's a mistake, especially if you're sinking thousands of dollars to hifi gear and expect good sound.

    I have 1702s (both versions) the 2702s, 3702s and also the 4702s. Jacob Jensen was designer it says yes.. and its not just about the proportions, its about the construction. One of the first guys to seriously consider time alignment and phase response.

      You want the speaker ohm's to be equal to or more than the amp ohm's. So for example my speakers are 6 ohm's and my amp is 4 ohms which is fine.

    Yes that is for sure an AlNiCo magnet. The iron around it is closing the magnetic field. It gives an idea about the strength of these magnets, obviously size matters. But also the material thickness of this Iron "clamp". The thicker the better as it gets saturated by the magnet. So if it is thin, there is not much to saturate.

  • @gordthor5351
    @gordthor5351 27 днів тому

    I don't know what an alneeko magnet is, but neodymium magnets are MUCH stronger. Even if they are 10 times smaller. Typically only higher end speakers use neodymium magnet, especially large towers. I have two sets of modern towers that use neodymium magnets with multiple bass drivers (3-7" and 2-8", which equal the surface area of 1-12" driver) and both pairs are quite heavy (65 and 75lbs each speaker). Regular magnets with the same magnets strength would push the weight of each speaker over 100lbs. I think the only advantage is to keep the weight down. It's the overall strength that matters.

    Jacob Jensen made the designs, and then B&O made the electronics fit. This has never been a good idea as I guess most people know. It's better the other way around. In many cases it has lead to overheating, and mechanism's build to fit not working properly. Combined with their lack of soldering skills you have the recipe for what way too many have experienced over the years: A stereo being more at the repair shop than at home.
    B&O has used some pretty nice units in their speakers, but all in all they have never build what could be considered good speakers (though some of them do sound quite charming). But on the other hand no one (in their right mind) has ever bought B&O for the sound quality. B&O is about design, gimmicks and status.
    Stay awesome Mate.
    Merry Christmas from Denmark.

    A large tweeter is a sign of a poor design (unless the tweeter is some esoteric interference mode one like a BNR). A large tweeter will become highly directional at very high frequency, making the power response suboptimal. Also a large cone/dome usually starts to break up at high frequencies. I'm betting that when these speakers were designed, designers didn't pay much attention to the power response and directivity index. Flat or flattish on-axis response is trivial to achieve but that does not make a good speaker by itself.
