The mall was doing well till 92. Gangs of people would loiter in the middle of the mall. Not buying anything and detour paying costumers. Soon fights started breaking out amongst the loitering people. They closed the arcade after a fight broke out. Why risk getting assaulted. People began leaving euclid around this time also. I left 10 years ago. This video brings me back to being a kid. Walking the mall with my parents and siblings. I bought my funeral shoes for my father at florsiam. That was about the last time I went there. God I miss my home town.

My first job out of college was at Reliance Electric in Euclid in 1981. We used to have lunch at York Steakhouse in the mall quite often. So many memories!
I worked at the May Company store there in the 80s. It was a really nice store, with parquet floors and a nice restaurant. The mall began a slide in the 90s when a woman was killed in a carjacking. Everyone quit going there because of actual and perceived crime. A cheap discount store opened nearby (Twin Valu ) which attracted more crime. Euclid also began a slow decline. Really sad.
Extremely well put together documentation of this Mall. This is my second video I'm watching, and you've definitely got new Sub!. I grew up in the 80's, a good portion of my teenage years were spent in malls, working, watching movies, hanging out with friends. It's comforting to know, that there are individuals out there who have an appreciation and respect for Malls and other places of Urban History, keep up the good work.
@Candace Dugan 😂🤣😂🤣 I never stopped being a Browns fan. So I tell everyone....when I die, I want the Browns to lower me in the ground so they can let me down, one last time. 🤣😂🤣😂😔
Hey thanks so much Bob...I usually give myself more time to spread the research out, but I’ve been up until 5, 6am a few nights buried in tax documents for this series under quarantine. New video next Friday!
I worked at Euclid Square Mall From September 1985 until 1991. I also worked at Randall Park Mall from November 1982 until September 1985. Euclid Mall was a wonderful place to work! It had a wonderful York Steak House, a Stride Rite Store, Hough Bakeries, Bresler's Ice Cream, The Gift Garden, Burrow's, Burger King, Arby's, Dillards(Higbee's) and The May Company(Kaufmann's then Macy's now) and many more stores including Karmelkorn Shoppe. Also outside were banks, CVS, Red Lobster, Toys are US! It was a different time and the Euclid businesses gave out Mall gift certificates and I loved seeing those come in! Now it's a Amazon center! Also there was Twin Value and Kmart....all gone!!!!!😥😥😥
I worked there too (May Company). Twin Valu was part of the problem. So sketchy! When that junk store opened, it was like all the criminals in Cleveland showed up. And security wasn’t good at the mall by the 90s. Crime killed this mall imo.
@@lbgrrl I loved Euclid Mall because it was smaller. Sometimes crime does appear on the increase, but so much closing and leaving of the industrial economy at that time also hurt the mall. I always thought a food court surrounding York Steak House would have helped the mall. Still was a great place to work!!!!
I posted this in another dead mall video, but the point still remand. Why not allow people to live in the dead malls? Remodel some of the stores into contemporary looking apartments or condos, and allow the tenets to wander the main halls to talk with their neighbors or have a gathering with friends and family. One wing of the mall will be used for homes, another area other for offices and some local businesses like food stores or restaurants. Hell place a Starbucks in one and many people would be lining up to live in the mall. You can live the AESTHETICS.
Maybe it has something to do with how zoning in the US works? From what I've gathered, there are no shops in residential areas and vice versa. Mixed zoning would be required.
Maybe because we live in the real world not fairytale land. So sick of seeing people talking about why not let people live there everytime there is an abandoned building.
Haunting soundtrack. Bloody awesome. Sticking with you for many years as you capture the giddy heights that 20th century consumerism achieved. History captures forever. Love your work.
These video are so amazing to me. I'm stationed on Guam right now and due to the booming tourist industry, all the mall or shopping centers do very well here. We even still have a Kmart here. But even back in my dad's town, the mall there is still doing very well, although the Sears closed and is now a Dick's Sporting Goods. It's sad. I appreciate your commentary with the history of each place. Thanks, Sal!

Sal, please keep your eyes on the Dayton Mall, a venerable ~50 year old mall that at one time was the Dayton, Ohio region's premier shopping destination. It's not quite dead yet but it's clearly trending in that direction and I think that, in time, it will make an excellent video series. I love your videos and the commercial archeology of the recent past... keep it up.

Im glad I work at a mall that is still thriving. It is the only one of four that used to be in my area. One is demolished, one is more offices now then anything else, one is barely hanging on as a shopping center and then theres the one I work at. The largest by square footage in my state. But its also going though changes with the times.

Thanks Sal, loving your content and production value. The dating agency intro was a nice touch. Also, I would've been so tempted to snag the taco bell sign.
Back in 2017 I took an Ohio mall tour and visited around 15 malls (dead or alive) in one weekend in the Toledo, Columbus, Akron, and Columbus areas. This was on my list to visit but unfortunately I didn't make it out. I wish I had though before it was gone for good.
There used to be a Red Lobster and a Toys R Us that I recall on the outside of the mall. I remember a sit down Arby’s and Kaybee Toys. Now Amazon distribution center is there

I grew up near here until I was 10, can’t remember if I’ve ever been to this mall though, will have to ask my mom. We mostly went to Great Lakes, Richmond or Beachwood Place. Hearing “Higbees” is such a throwback!

But i have to say out of all the malls we went to Euclid Town square mall was my least favorite. We didn't go there often but when we did i couldn't wait to leave! Malls i loved growing up in the 80s was Randall, Chapel, Richmond, Summit, Severance, Beachwood, Great Northern!
Oh my god, that dating site is so creepy! It’s put me off my breakfast 😂 and what the hell is a ‘body designer’ 😆 Great tour as always Sal, made place.
FWIW, The Sears in Springfield, MO. just announced today that they are closing their doors at the Battlefield Mall. That only leaves Dillards (Men's & Women's separate stores), Macys, and J.C. Pennys as anchors. Sears was the largest.
Epic intro!:) reminded me of old Miami Vice episode when Don Johnson had to do a video clip for a dating service to catch the evil killer. Who was actually a transvestite, in a bizarre twist of fate. More to the point. Throwing in those clips would def up the mall game.
as was the case with euclid square mall. i grew up near this mall and used to visit as a kid and teenager, by the time i was 20 the mall was dying and crime had taken over the area .crime 100 pct was the end for euclid square mall
Thank you Sal for the wonderful videos so far. I'm trying to visit as many malls as I can that you featured, 4 so far. Hope you visit The Mall of Monroe in Michigan someday. That is definitely a dead mall. Cheers.
I was there the first or second day that mall opened I think in the late 70's . I think I have a slide I shot just after sunset someplace. It was a cute small town mall, sort of a shame though that sears moved from downtown Monroe into the mall starting downtown monroe's retail decline.

Awesome work! One suggestion for a future episode: What dead mall Expedition Log Series would be complete without the most infamous dead mall of them all: ROLLING. ACRES. MALL. Need I say more? The mall itself is long demolished now but there's plenty of footage from its years of abandonment and throughout the demolition process...

I’d love to cover rolling acres, but it was demolished, I’m afraid.
