  • An in depth tutorial showing how to solder surface mount parts. Covering the tools, techniques and tips that can really help learn how to properly solder electronics! If you are new to soldering this video should have you soldering SMD components in no time!
With just a bit of pratice it becomes much easier to solder SMD then through hole soldering. As shown in the video the main key is lots of flux, but be sure to properly clean your work once you are finished soldering it.

You are the reason the internet is awesome, the wonderful sharing of knowledge! Before the internet you would have to go to the library and hope to find a decent book that was still up to date. Even then it would be hours of reading and making mistakes trying to understand the concepts. But here in a half hour I feel comfortable to start doing surface mount soldering and expect to make use of all the tips you listed. Thank you for taking the time to educate your fellow man!

Thank you very much for your very useful techniques to solder SMDs. I am a newbie in to N scale model railroading so was planning to use SMDs in my projects but had no clue how to handle these tiny little devils. You made it look like so simple. Thank you.

In the end I have found SMD to actually be much easier to work with. There are so many cool little tricks that can be learned that just aren't possible with TH parts. the speed increase is also a large factor too.

I've been circuit soldering for over 20 years with military and thought I was a Pro up until this past year. Since retiring from the military and continuing on finding a job I am passionate about doing, I now deal with music equipment circuit boards that require delicate micro SMD soldering. Your video helped me out immensely with safety practices and tips/tricks of completing a clean component removal/replacement!

Sparky, you are a legend mate!
After years of soldering, i started to rip my hair out when i was confronted with smd's. Bloody things are so 'effing small, me with hands like a shaved yeti and then on top of that; solder bridges between chip pins.
In one video, those demons have been excorsised. I just fixed my daughters usb connector on her beloved phone (why start small? Just jump straight into the frying pan), and it works!! My little girl thinks I'm the best thing since sliced bread, and you deserve beer....lot's of beer. English beer, of course, not that watered-down stuff they sell in the usa. ;)
    Thankyou!
Excellent tutorial, as are your others....recommend this to anyone wanting to learn.

Wow! great instructional video, I don't know why I never thought of UA-cam for help on a soldering job that I need to do. I must repair a trace and re-solder a 4,700 ohm SMD on my Dual band 2 meter/70 centimeter Kenwood TH-78A radio transceiver. I soldered the resistor twice previously but while attempting to solder it a third time the trace burned up and now I have to "jumper the trace from a ribbon connector lead to an IC pin. Your video will help me now that I know the tricks of the trade thanks to your instructional video. Best regards

I work as a circuit board assembler. Do smd and also run a wave soldering machine for through hole boards. Use water soluble flux. Very easy to remove flux. Wash boards in water, then dry with compressed air. Sometimes use no clean solder for minor repairs, but prefer water soluble.

Glad you found it useful! Yes I generally use the 50/50 mix anywhere I need to hand clean, otherwise I use a cheap ultrasonic jewlery cleaner with just isopropyl in it, I usually let them soak for about 15 mins then rinse with distilled water and dry.
The part number for the pencil is WXP65, I guess its actually a 65w pencil which is why you might not have found it searching for 60w, oops.
