Are Dometic RV A/C Motors Intentionally Bad?

  • In the field, I have noticed that the blower motors on Dometic roof A/C's seem to have a much higher failure rate than Colemans or the Older Dometic units. I am not an engineer and have not torn the old motors apart to compare to the new motors, but I have noticed the manufacturer tags on the new motors to be coming from a different manufacturer. Here are a few musings and how to replace a Brisk Air RV A/C blower motor. Thanks for watching!!!
part number for inside blower wheel: 3313107.033
part number for outside blower blade: 3313107.015
part number for blower motor: 3315332.005

*Works so well **Fastly.Cool** for rv that it only requires daytime operation until high temp and humidity are overnight. It is difficult to get to side filters, but back is easily accessible.*

Actually, I'm going to expound on that. Because of this video. I was able to change out my blower motor and capacitor on my domestic AC unit. I never worked on one before. This one lasted 5 years but the one before this lasted maybe 20 years. Thanxs

I thought my motor was bad (brand new Penguin II). After watching your video I realized there are two fans on the motor, I inspected the inside fan and found the two screws from the manufacturer were never tightened down so the fan was rubbing on the plastic housing (very wabbly too). I tightened the screws, move the fan a 1/4 out, straightened it and bam we have AC in the front now. I also avoided having to go into the shop for warranty repair! Thanks for the great videos!👏🍻

Great, I just bought a new Dometic 15K BTU for my little Mallard Class C. Brisk Air II mfg. Date Nov. 2020. I got it from a dealer in Fort Worth for $750 shipped to my door. I haven't installed it yet, fixing the roof, and am now waiting on new vents; I want to first paint it with "Henrys." They are light; I'll give them that. The one up there now still works fine, and I don't know what BTU it is; these Mallards were built in Ohio, but it doesn't cut it in Houston during summer; it was a 100 in the shade today, I think. But, for an A/C that's 33 years old, it tries. Love your videos; I've learned a lot in the past 6 months!

The motor stars 4:16 horrendous noises without failing Its the sealed for life bearings is what fails. I repaced the motor in my 2014 Coleman branded unit and went from barely able to hear the TV at full volume ,to near silence 67db . I followed the directions many have posted on how to make sure the air is traveling along the ducts. I keep the air dump in the unit closed. BTW cleaning the condenser and evaporator while you have access to it helps make air cooler.

    So two things.
    1) I hate planned obsolescence
It’s ridiculous to me that these air conditioners need maintenance after 3 years and shows me what rv manufacturers really think about their customers.
    2) I work in west Texas and today it was well over 100.
I can home and boom oven. I knew this was coming so I had steady had the motor. Found your video and followed it verbatim. I’m now sitting in the ac. I really appreciate the knowledge. However I probably should’ve just wire nutted my leads because that lil pin connector kicked my butt.

I had a brand-new dometic AC unit fail the same way the squirrel cage came loose and just grenaded. Rcd superstore here in Columbus Ohio installed it's and I used it less than a dozen times. They want to make me tow it all the way across town so I just hired a on-site mechanic who installed the warrantied wheel and guess what happened? It exploded again and actually threw shrapnel into the foam shroud. Dometic refused to warranty or replace the unit so rcd wants me again to tow it clear across town. I've been going back and forth with these criminals for the past year because they lied about repairing a bunch of other things. Then of course the manager gets all pissy. I was just going to take them to court but that's a real pain in the butt for this stupid thing. But dragging it all the way down there so they can bulshit me again is an equal inconvenience. The second guy I paid just to remove the squirrel-cage the first time refused to get back up there and check what he's done the second time! I'm sick to death of American companies that just screw their customers. I'm also sick to death of the idiots running this country into the ground using stuff made by our sworn communist enemies.

I've got a roof top ac , it had a for sure start cap that had blown....I replaced , and the motor would run kind of slow and stop... I tested run cap and it value was just in the verge of variance , so it seemed to work slightly but not all time , so I ordered a new one it test good. But the motor still spun slowly....but run consistently ...I went ahead and ordered a new motor thinking it might be windings....the new motor does the same ...it came with new run cap , so I've tried switching it ..no change, it tested good as well. I retested the capacitance of the start cap again just to see if it changed and it is right on the money at 7.5mfd , I started trying to isolate ...and it will run at normal speed perfectly if I disconnect the start capacitor after its started ... if I try turning on without start capacitor, it won't start up on its own but with a light spin will run just fine...I've tested this out in the previous motor as well. So this makes me believe there maybe something wrong with the start capacitor in some way that it's not discharging prooerly...I've not sure, what do you think? Am I over looking something?

Check your AC supply - specifically check for a voltage drop (should 110vac min) and the amount of amps the motor is drawing (the casing will have a label with the specs) - note: make SURE you understand how to do this safely. If your breaker has been tripping because the motor or cap drew to much current, the breaker points can become pitted, ledding to weird intermittent problems. The only fix would be to replace the AC breaker. The other thing it could be is a break in your wiring.

When the compressor is running, I do feel cold air. At least a 20 degree difference
I have checked capacitor it reads 48.5/4.7 and it’s a 50/5. And says it’s plus or minus 5 percent. So I think it’s ok

    Hello, great video.
I replaced my fan motor and only low speed would work. I figured I got a faulty motor with a bad high speed winding, so I returned it and got a new motor...same issue.
What would cause no high speed? Could it possibly be two bad motors from the factory?
Would a bad capacitor cause that?
    Please help before I try a 3rd motor😁☹️

Well, fan motor number 3, still no high speed. New thermostat, still no high speed. Can it possibly be the capacitor? It worked fine before motor swaps.

Just changed the control box, still no high. Any suggestions?

Was the original motor a genteq? I didn’t catch that. The reason I’m asking is because we sell them for AC blower motors as replacements for OEM motors that burn out. I’ll have to keep an eye out on them if this is a problem, maybe steer my customers towards another brand.

the original is genteq yes just like the replacement. I don't know of another direct replacement brand. Thanks!

I think my motor in my dometic
a/c is out....I have a 1978 dogde sportsman brougham c class ..come fix mine in Payson someday..I bought a 500.00 Whynter internal dual hose AC/heater unit....it works well..
But want to fix the rooftop ac before I sell it someday..any suggestions on who can look at it ..troubleshoot it??

I would recommend a completely new A/C and control setup if your a/c is 40 years old. I don't think anyone would try fixing a unit older than 5 years. Thanks!

Did you have to discharge the capacitor? If so, can you show and tell how? Thanks for the videos. Geeze you think a guy could make a living doing all these repairs down there. 🤝🔨🛠

    • @AZExpert
      @AZExpert  3 роки тому

I've never found a need to discharge a capacitor, they self-discharge fairly quickly, but do remove 120vac power before removing the capacitor wiring

Although I prefer Coleman type A/C's it is usually best and most cost effective to stick to the brand you have as the t-stats and control boxes only work with the A/C manufacturer. Also, quite often the wiring harnesses are proprietary and will not work easily with another brand. They're quite sneaky!!

    • @mrmudstud5980

AZ Expert Thanks, good point on the wiring harness, in fact, that does make sense. But, of course, the competition between the companies are never in the customer interest 😳.
