Interesting idea, and it seems like this would hold horns of varying sizes, good thinking.

A drinking horn could not be held like this.
Most dodecahedrons were waaaaaaaay smaller than the image depicted in this video. If you put a horn in them to be hold, you could only put the tip of it in most of these dodecahedrons, which would inevitably lead to the horn being held to the side, with its center of gravity making it impossible to stand upright specially if filled. It would just tumble over with the dodecahedron attached to it.
Roman dodecahedrons were 11cm AT MOST (being most of them around 4cm), whereas drinking horns tended to be around 18 cm or even longer, also rarely actually horns but horn shaped pottery which is heavier. This makes them too heavy and too big to be held like this by such tiny objects.

Ok, a possible use, but why these knobs? I suspect that it was used in some activity with fire. Why else make these objects in metal?

Thanks for the credit for using one of our group’s photos. Would you like to make a donation to the Norton Disney group as we have another season to fund? We are investigating the site where ours was found.
BTW the plural of dodecahedron is dodecahedra.

I don't think so ... But if you actually reverse you idea and say , they put those devices on live animals horns that would make much more sense. If you do this, you get a nice leash connecting point and can control the animal. Maybe they were like mounts to steering wheel for goat sleds or something. That would explain alot of bizzare things about this device. But still not the best explanation , because you would need at least two of them , but they only finding them in singles.

High marks for imagination but I'm sceptical. To validate this theory one would need evidence of drinking horns being found in the same locations. I think if you were to attempt to create a working example of your theory, rather than just relying on drawings, you would quickly find that it's not as practical as you think.

    Interesting.
How much would one of these dodecahedrons cost your average Roman citizen? Looks complex.
Aren't there local horn-holders made for specific horns? Should be much cheaper.
I'm not convinced that this was a horn-holder for liquids, but maybe it could be used for a craftsman working on horns? Unlike priests or commoners, I figure crafters would *need* to accomodate a wide variety of horns.

Good idea about the horns but I think it’s more for knitting glove fingers. Or horn cosies 😊

The issue with the knitting theory is that the size of a tube is determined by the number of pegs, the tension of the yarn, and the gauge of the yarn. The size of the holes in the dodecahedron would have no influence on the final product.

@@AliciaHarnois Veru good point and I had wondered the same, thanks for confirming. I guess more head-scratching is needed. One idea that springs to mind is that if an object or landmark is viewed through a small to bigger hole at an exact distance, the height of the object or landmark could then be determined if the dodecahedron had an accompanying ‘key’ written somewhere. So possibly a surveying tool?

Oh my...I've been playing Path of Exile for years and I never knew that the inspiration for the resonators was this!
So, it seems that their use was rather different than making your gear better! :D
Thanks for the video, very interesting theory!

Too small for a drinking horn, but maybe a small horn for an inkwell?
