Shaq is a tough person for me to judge. He's a very poor defender, doesn't add much offensively as a stretch big, no playmaking and is a below average rebounder for a supposed PF. Oh and he's yet to play 60 games in a season and won't this year either. As a Wizards fan, I'm happy to move on and don't care we didn't get much. He's just a name because people liked him coming out of college a few years ago and has been playing anonymously in DC where no one sees him not developing.

I think he will likely become a quality starter. Your comment is if you focused and kind of exaggerate every negative aspect of a player and leaving out every positive about them. This is why I can't take every statement NBA/Former NBA players make seriously. I remember watching Luka Doncic torch the Clippers (scoring a 40 point Triple-Double) on a bum ankle in Game 4 2020 and Shaq said he wasn't impressed by it. And that was Luka in his Sophomore season.

You have a good point about JJ Redick, specially now that his podcast has grown much more than a mic in his basement. His takes aren’t even something that basketball fanatic can’t figure out themselves, he says what he sees. But he sounds analytical and genuine so it seems that it is a “new media” because we haven’t had it in a long time.

Inside the NBA was completely destroyed by Shaq. When it was just Ernie, Kenny and Charles this show was classic. It seemed like it was just some buddies talking about basketball, and it was truly funny and informative.
Now it’s just Shaq and Charles bickering with each other half the time, and then some actual basketball knowledge every once in awhile.

Not knowing Rui’s name or game is one thing, had he just left it at that it would be more understandable. Just to emphasize your point: Dwight Howard is a future 1st ballot Hall of Famer and arguably a top 50 player of all time, but because Shaq has spent the last 15 years clowning the dude, now even the league thinks Dwight is a bum because no one signed him this season even though he's still a great role player and he was left off of the 75 team, the same team that has *Carmelo Anthony* in it. You can legitimately make the argument that Shaq's shortcomings as an influential member of the NBA media has ruined the reputation and career of one of the game's all-time greats (I know that Dwight had his missteps as well but it shouldn't have been enough to ruin his legacy).

Thing is former players are usually the worst at being analysts. Being an analyst requires developing a skill set to breaking down players strengths and weaknesses, schemes, how teams employ those schemes, how teams counter those schemes, etc. It's not as those players can't do it, they often did it while playing, it's just that once they stopped playing they stopped putting in the work and get overconfident in their opinions because they played. Being a former player doesn't mean you're good at analyzing a game just like being a former player doesn't mean you'll be a good coach or GM. Each job requires a different skills so that's why I scoff at people who say "he played the game" because it doesn't mean that much in a job where you're supposed to be analyzing the game. Being a former player can be enormously helpful in informing your analysis but that is just one aspect that can assist, you still need to put in the work to be good.
