We have not covered this volumetric construction approach to figure drawing much, instead focusing more on observational skills, finding interesting shapes and prioritising gesture. This is a powerful exercise that will help train your eyes to understand the figure in 3 dimensional space, and give clarity to the viewer.
We aren't presenting this volumetric drawing with boxes method here as our preferred way to draw, but as an exercise. A box is the simplest representation of a 3 dimensional volume. By pushing yourself to make decisions about the figure in those very simple terms, you gain a deeper understanding of the figure's forms. You can more easily make sense of the perspective and you can also create figures more easily from your imagination.
If you'd like to know more about our take on this construction approach to drawing versus observational drawing, check out this video: • Which is the Best Draw...

It took me year and a half of consistent figure drawing to be able to really comprehend how to view the human body in terms of boxes/basic shapes. The concept in itself is fairly simple, the hard part is training your eye to see that simplicity.

It's so helpful because you explain it very well. In general, tutorials just say "draw a box" but they don't teach you how to "see the box". I can't wait for upcoming videos because I'm having a hard time "seeing" the boxes in the human body, especially in complicated poses.

Your road example was FANTASTIC. I'd draw an ok stick figure and then try to jump straight to a complex body with lots of nuance and then wonder why it looked all wrong.

Definitely helpful, you have a knack for figuring out how to communicate complicated ideas. I've actually been having trouble trying to explain this recently, will be sharing the video 👍

Trying to figure out the construction have been helping me to see the figure beyond it's contour and being more aware of foreshortening. What I've been practicing isn't for complex or anatomically correct figure drawing, but to help me take the picture I have in my head and translating it to the paper, so then I can refine it and seek for a proper reference. I've been doing timed gesture drawings with a set of references, usually adding at least a box to define the hips and then without the reference I try to build the mannequin with simple forms. I still haven't figured out how to make a figure drawing out of it or use it to study anatomy, but it's serving its purpose so far.

Hi man, i like your grit with this channel ... everything helps, with small tools and concepts to absorb slowly. appreciate you doing allot of this work and I feel that allot of these are spread all over the net but people that are wanting to draw and have the passion for it WANT it now and cant handle the emotions of pulling through a process of learning... baby steps is good, tracing is good to begin guiding your hand through figures, anything to begin populating the mind banks with patterns, problem is that everyone wants to do fantasy drawing directly and thats what frustrates them. Keep on it

What a fantastic example to show how construction and abstraction works! Students are often expected to understand right off the bat why these abstractions are used, but just taking that extra little bit of time to explain the reason we use these intermediary steps could help to clarify things massively.
One of the biggest breakthroughs I've had with drawing is that the vast majority of it isn't actually about the 'drawing' at all, but rather how to see and think about your subject. I wish this was emphasised a little bit more at the very beginner levels because it could save so much confusion. Really thoughtful demonstration, thanks Kenzo!

The road example is practically how computers learn too. If anyone is interested, it's called principle component analysis. So that is a proven, computer tested way to learn anything.

i can draw figures with boxes and cylinders all day any pose from imagination, ask me to draw an arm and i cant even place the tricep correctly without it looking distorted i have no idea how to even go about what muscles to learn first or where to start or how many repititions to do, but i think anatomy is way harder than form and wedges and foreshortening!

This is really helpfull. I think the main problem with constructing organic figures from more "rigid" shapes (boxes) is the capacity of abstraction of each person, reason why some might find easier to draw the silhouette not minding the overrall shape in itself. However, i think you've found a great way to simplify a complicated subject that many will find usefull.

    • @lovelifedrawing
