So I finally got around to doing this today. Had a multi-fit high torque starter, had to take the transmission and clutch and flywheel off because my G body malibu won't work with a 11" clutch without finding the rare "G body only" 78-79 specific 11' bellhousing. Had to go back to the 10.5" clutch and 153 tooth flywheel that came stock in my 1980 Malibu. I bolted up the one starter bolt and found a drill that just barely fit in the hole for the other bolt, I think it was an X drill size. Lined up the starter and verified the alignment and the "paperclip" clearance, drilled a pilot divot, then started with a C drill size. Once I drilled that straight thru into the boss in the block, I moved up a couple sizes, then finished off with a 5/16" bit straight thru. My cousin then told me that the starter bolts don't start threading until a 1/2" into the block so I used a 3/8" bit for a 1/2" to create a starter hole for the tap. Once I started tapping, I squirted PB Blaster into the top of the hole and went 1/4 to 1/2 turn at a time. With the flywheel off, I was able to use the chuck and T handle in my tap and die kit and tapped straight thru the entire hole. I didn't have to use a ton of force by just doing small turns. It was a bit tedious and took about 10 minutes of turning but it went thru. I already have the flywheel, clutch and bellhousing back on, tomorrow morning I'll fit the transmission again and hopefully be burning tires by lunch time. Thanks again for the video. Saved me from fixing it with a jug of gas and a lighter.
Just ran into this problem, a 350 from a ‘74 full size car into a 1980 Malibu 4speed Saginaw. Went to bolt the starter up and found staggered bolts where I needed straight. Going to pull the motor back out and do this on the engine stand cause I don’t have enough room with the bellhousing in the way.
klowny , my 1988 Chevy k1500 pick up truck has a crack on the end we’re you mount your starter . ( on the block ) . And I don’t know how to fix it , I can use some advice or knowledge. Please & thank you
had to do the same thing on my 400sbc. I have to be special and put a 400 in my boat. I couldn't use the 168 tooth flywheel because it wouldn't fit the bell housing. I screwed up on the threads though so I had to weld a nut on the top side of the hole. still works though. next I need to drill I to the front side of the block to mount the alternator and power steering on the bottom side instead of the top.
Blocks with staggered starter bolt holes are guaranteed that the flywheel is 168 tooth? I have a 88 Camaro Iroc-Z and my starter bolt pattern are staggered. I'm thinking on just going with a staggered 168 tooth power master mini starter.
Thanks for the video...I gotta drill my 1958 348 block for a 153 tooth flex plate starter....the 348 had a cast iron Powerglide and the starter didn't bolt to the block...now I have the later aluminum Powerglide and the starter doesn't bolt to it...it now will bolt to the block...the block already has the staggered bolt holes for the 168 tooth flywheel...this drilling and tapping should be just the fix I'm looking for.
Hi 🤓Great video! Please help me! 98 GMC Safari van staggered starter bolt holes. Is there a kit to make mine inline if I buy a different type starter and is there even a different inline starter that I can use that has an adapter like you used. Thank you. I don't want to lose my van. It's my house and I'm stuck in a parking lot.😭😭😭
Hey how's it going I HAVE A 68 CORVETTE STINGRAY I'M I had my mechanic to Install a new starter now I'm told it needs a new engine because were the Starter mounts up has a Little chunk missing from the whole of the block need you feedback please
you need a proper drill index when drilling cast iron or steel, start with 1/8th or 3/32nds depending on how big the hole will be and go one letter size up at a time. your holes will be truer and you won't ruin any bits drilling into hard metal ! other than that it was perfect.
Thanks for documenting and sharing! I will be going from an auto to a manual on a '74 350 block, so this vid is great. Is there a way to work out how many teeth are on the auto flex plate while it's in the car? I was thinking of counting teeth per inch or something like that. lol @ Who's your clown daddy and what does he do.
Joe Coco no wrong because mine went straight threw and I just trashed it!!! It was oil to because when I put some new oil in it I watched it drain straight out!!
That's not possible. The oil passages are on the left side of the block (by the oil filter) not the right, and the flange where the starter mounts is actually inside the flywheel cavity. www.grumpysperformance.com/oilpasse3.jpg

i know you said you used a 3/16 drill bit but did you mean a 5/16? I have the same issue and want to make sure

see if you can get a straight pattern to put in there..
I know this is an old video, but that face shield looks like is still had the protective film on it. Kinda makes it hard to see, I bet.
It since has been taken off lol don't forget to subscribe
@@klowny1969 Your video did remove the fear of getting this wrong. Thanks!
Can I do that on my 98 Chevy blazer
can you post the link to the expensive staggered 153 tooth starter from csr?
Great video. now I can do it whenever I run into something like this, which Im sure I will.
thanks..and thanks for watching
Can this be done to a 1998 Chevy blazer? My starter holes were stripped out. Rethreaded and now starter doesn't line up to hit fly wheel
mrgb306 yeah..it can be fixed
So what is it I need to get? And where do I get it? Need it bad
mrgb306 u can try tapping it..or helicoiling it..any auto parts store can help u get the stuff u need
do you have the link for that adapter plat ya mentioned?
whenever I tap new threads always spray wd40 as you in ,it also helps to remove some debri as the tap goes in
Maxx Masson yup..i did that
Nice, just what I needed! Thanks for making the video!
thanks for watching
can I do that to my 1993 GMc sierra?
could I out 153 tooth flywheel on 97 350 motor? with this style starter???

Yesir! Lol don't forget to subscribe
What size engine is that?
Merk Merk generation one 350
Wish I could find a mechanic to do that job
If your not careful you’ll drill straight through and go in the oil casing!!!!
No you can't. You'll go through to the other side. It's a casting lip.

Don't you wish gravity would just stop for while you are working in cramped space under a car?
yeah that would have been nice lol thnx for watching
I think he did mean 5/16 cause 3/16 would be small
drilling way to fast , good way to burn up the bit. good work though.
???
You should prob mention that the viewers should exercise a fair amount of caution when committing to such hackery.
it might be a better idea not to perform this FREE drill and tap hackery and just spend 260 dollars on a csr starter
=\
Lol
Where's the fun in that! as they say "What could possibly go wrong!!"
What a hack, 2/16's!!!!
v860rich ?
153 tooth starter? Wtf
BLUE ! Yup why?
klowny1969 you mean 153 tooth flexplate
BLUE ! Lol ..u guys know what i mean
O
