I'm really glad you made a video on this topic. It is not a common experience. I have been extremely lucky as a tattoo collector. My best friend became a tattoo apprentice based on my actions... which resulted in me being her guinea pig for a lot of her first tattoos (that I love and do not regret a single one.) Because of our closeness and my influence on her career, she refuses to take her hourly payment for me. When I ask what I owe she tells me nothing. I always tip her generously, pay for her meals whenever I can. But people judge me and my tattoos for this treatment. I still pay for tattoos from other artists, but people try to knock me down for my discount.

Being able to get free tattoos or tattoos for trade is super uncommon. I'm super lucky to be able to have some myself. My best friend and roommate is a tattoo artist. She did her "interview" tattoo for the shop she works at now on me, as well as two others. She refuses to take money from me, but I always find a way to get money to her regardless haha. There's also an apprentice at her shop I'm close with as well and i always allow him to practice or do cool things on me. Everyone at their shop are like family to me and I'm super grateful ♡

My artist has given me several free tattoos, including my entire back piece as a trade to go to a convention contest with him! I have 2 full sleeves, chest piece, full back piece, thighs, and several on my lower leg all from the same artist. So, I think that’s why. I’m basically a walking billboard for his art.

I was wondering if you could talk about tattoo rework. I have a half sleeve that I don't necessarily love. It is blotchy and the style isn't how I wanted it to be. I have another artist I would like to go over it and give it a different feel. I have anxiety xD what are the norms? Should I get the 1st artists permission? Can I just ask the new artist?
I’m going through the EXACT same thing right now, anxiety and all. I have an appointment today with a new artist that I PRAY can help me rework my half sleeve. Would love to know what others think of this issue and if they felt happier after their tattoos were reworked or covered up!
I just got my half sleeve reworked! Go to an artist you admire and just be completely honest with them about how you feel about your current work and be prepared with reference photos of styles and techniques you like! Make sure your new artist is invested in and excited about your rework, as it will turn out best that way. :) I didn't speak to the original tattoo artist until after it was done, but I definitely don't think it's important to. I also deal with anxiety, but I knew this was something that had to be done in order to be happy with my skin. It was a long, and at times exhausting process, but it was so, so worth it! Good luck!

At least that dude who skipped town was chill when you found him. My ex's brother is very skilled at tattooing but he has addiction issues and his brain is def fried from them. He ended up kicked up out of one shop run by hells angels for being on drugs and so he started out of his house. 2 Christmases ago he overdosed and my ex and their mom and I were there when paramedics and police came to get him. Eventually they got him to leave town and move to bc to get away from people here. But he left a lot of customers with unfinished tattoos, out their deposits, just owing a lot of money.

An artist I know once wanted to give me a free tattoo, it was script saying "full sleeve". I thought it was funny but didn't go ahead with it. In the end he gave it to the apprentice at the shop!
I do have one big piece on my thigh I got for free though, still need to get it finished. It's a lady's face with a moon and foliage in black and white. My friend's husband did it and he just told her one day to ask a friend to come get tattooed.
I've only gotten one tattoo for free and it was from an artist that has done a lot of my tattoos and has become one of my friends. It was kind of a trade deal guess because I modeled some shirts for her and in return she tattooed my cat's name who had passed away on my leg in old English font. It was pretty great because it was a tattoo I was originally already planning to get and pay for, it is something special to me, and it was done by someone I trust.

I worked at a shop and the artists there are still my friends so I get freebies sometimes :) It's not always easy to schedule bigger pieces since I don't want to take up their time when they could be tattooing someone else for money.

I got my foot tattooed for an iPod classic. It was a pretty sweet trade imo because I love my foot tattoo so much. It’s a black cat with a third eye.
