Here’s a pre-merger true story to elaborate on what Ice said about “ABA guys playing against NBA guys in the summers “of the early to mid 70s: *In August 1975, Madison Square Garden at the “Each One, Teach One” Charity Tournament- Dr.J tore the roof off the building! *A majority of top NBA stars played, including Walt Frazier, Archie Clark, Randy Smith, Jim Chones, Cazzie Russell, Billy Cunningham, Nate “Tiny” Archibald, Bob Lanier, etc. The layup line at one end of the court, pregame was legendary in itself. Kansas City Royals foward Larry McNiell started bouncing the ball off the floor and catching it high above the rim and slamming it down - with the crowd oohhing and aahhing… he kept repeating the same thing, essentially. Doc took wind of that, as if to say, okay… then Billy Paltz, the 6’11 center for the NY Nets, started grabbing the rim with left hand and hook dunking with his right. A few other notable players began doing their layup line dunks. Now, Doc, who was initially content just politely laying up the ball (and for this game they played with the official NBA Spaulding)- went “Rucker Playground “ on everyone- dipping into his bag and performed some of the most stylish, whirlybird, mind blowing, mesmerizing, one handed 3 feet above the rim slam dunks never seen - he was like a super ballet dancer, walking on air with a 7-2 wing span holding the ball like a grapefruit, dunking every which way he desired - including this one dunk where he leapt just inside the foul line with right arm extending straight to the rim (keep in mind, he’s floating above rim level) and then suddenly cocks the ball back, with his arm in Z form, and thunder dunks it and the ball hits the floor like it was shot out of a cannon! The crowd went nuts!! As for the games… Doc was the star of stars… he toyed with everyone. Frazier made the mistake of chasing Doc on a fast break, trying to steal the ball (and Frazier was a league leader)- but Doc, with those baseball mitt hands, kinda slowed his dribble with his right hand, keeping Frazier on his left, then Doc exploded from the top of the key, by this moment, Doc is floating with the ball cocked back, Frazier is staring at Doc’s shoes and reaches to foul Doc just as he extends his arm to drop the ball into the rim! And-1! There were so many other spectacular plays - here’s one more: Doc blasts past one defender only to meet Jim Chones in the middle of the lane- Doc wants to scoop shot but Chones has an angle to block it - Doc, airborne, switches the ball to his left hand for a whirling hook shot off the backboard- and is fouled by Chones!! Crowd goes nuts!! The 2 day tournament saw Doc win MVP!!
