This reminds me of an early D&D game. The players enter a bar just on the edge of the wastelands. They don't know each other. For some reason, a fight breaks out, and they end up helping each other out. Afterward, they head out together to start their life of adventures together.
Soooo like I'm watching almost every day. IJS....the synchronicity of it all. BRILLIANT JOB AGAIN, GUYS!!!!
Well done, me likey, definitely a nod to heavy metal mag....perfect 🤩
Thx for posting. Steampunk is cool! Really just caught on. Reminds me of Heavy Metal magazine. I would like to enjoy more of Fray! 👍👍
True talent. I masterpiece that today would be viewed as possibly outdated. However, man respect man. This SciFi short is a diamond in the rough.
Wonderful! I kept thinking to myself "there's something about their voices - was it dubbed?"
Then I see you're from Finland. Its just the way they speak English.
Its a pity the first one wasn't longer. I find myself wondering what Fray and her partner will get up to next.
Thank you so much for sharing, and here's to your continued work.
This was great. Star Wars meets For A Few Dollars More. Love to see a full length film with these characters in it.
I would like to see more of this crew. Pirates of the Caribbean meets Guardians of the Galaxy.
Very nice, great set, costume design and casting. Can’t wait to see more from you.
Loved it.
No matter the rougher parts, overall I enjoyed this.
❤️
Brilliant. Another fantastically grim work from Finland, where the Soviet Union is always just next door.
Bwahaha just watched this again for the first time in a couple of years. Being involved in this project is one of my favorites memories from my time in Finland. Could the acting have been better? Sure. Dialogue? Most def! But this is an amazing project, with a great crew. And I mean, c'mon, set design, editing, overall production value! Thanks so much @hmcindie for everything!
PS- I'm one of the actors with the charisma of a wet paper bag, as one of the haters below described us. Lol. That shit is funny!!!
This was great! I hope to see a sequel. Really liked the personalities of Alex and Fray. Wonderful film.
"Congratulations on graduating Villainous Boss Antagonist School. Here is your complimentary huge snake. Wear it with pride."
Nice story. With a lot of the junk that is being created today on mainstream television this is a refreshing story. Would like to see more of this!
This has real potential, but also needs a lot of work. I hope you produce more episodes and make each one better than the last. You know what needs to be improved.
8:35 "What the hell is this?"
"What?"
-Gestures to everything
This has great potential. I wouldn’t classify it as steampunk, though.
Good movie. I loved the way his gun blew up on him. Well they got thrown out of the bar with nothing for their efforts. Love the way she just gets up the spunk to go on and try something else. I wonder if she will ever get her money?
SISU!! That was a lot of fun! Please make more. Great english language usage- exotic, cool and tough. And Fray: yowza!! Cheers!
Pyhät tulipallot! 2014 ?! Bravo!
*************************
Holy fireballs! 2014?! I hope you've been working on a "sequel", because THIS is a hot property and deserves a series and/or a feature-length movie. BEST short I've seen in months. Bravo!
Enjoyed it! :) A little slow, but SUCH potential. Hope to see more of FRAY. Thanks
Great job guys. I love it
Thank you for putting this out. It was a lot of work from the crew and the actors. You did really well, considering it was no/low budget, and that it was 7 years ago... The ADR... I, personally would have preferred the dialog be natural, native, with subtitles. Cut out some of stuff that doesn't add to the story, like the glass looking and booze sloshing at 6:02. Add some diegetic sounds, even if you have to use on-set microphones.
Very funny in a delightfully gritty, ultra camp sort of way! Sergio Leone would be proud. Well, hey, my opinion. 'The Good, The Bad, and the Really, Really Ugly' in space with a female lead. Could be a success on the big screen if promoted correctly. A potential cult favorite. Try Kickstarter!
That'll be $5, please. [ : - Q ]
Seriously, I look forward to the future adventures of...
I can't see how others missed the humor. Black humor is hard for people to catch sometimes, but when one sees someone drinking out of a bottle with a skull and crossbones on it, a knock-em-down, drag-em-out fight where everyone's none the worse at the end (OK, minor contusions - you gotta show something), a co-lead's casual attitude of "I'll rescue the female just as soon as I finish my drink...oh, all right, what the hell..."), a bad guy with a pet snake, and so on.
I hope it finds its true audience soon. I've subscribed to your UA-cam channel so as to keep up.
for her it was a land of opportunity
STEAMPUNK ?
saw only punk, but have some good moments with fails mostly, that was fun
Kinda reminds me of FireFly!! I was hoping he would say "but at least I got the money" and show her the pouch the snake guy put on the table.
I would like to see this one as a series or a movie.
Loved it! Main characters have chemistry and liked the guys and girls acting even though it was short. I really liked the action scenes and bet if it had a great script it could be really great! I’d love to see something else made
Nice. I'd say more on the sci-fi side than steampunk, but nothing wrong with that. It'd be a good pilot for a series or teaser for a feature. An interesting world. If there was more, I'd watch it.
I would totally watch this as a series
I want to see more episodes of this. I want to see more of this chick and I want to know more about her relationship with her backup in the bar.
I think the showdown scene would have been more convincing if the heroine actress had been directed to act just a bit uptight or a tad worried instead of just matter of fact as if no risk was involved, but overall I could feel myself getting sucked into it all. A worthy effort to be sure. Wish I could have been a part of it. Thanks for sharing it.
Great movie. All its faults are what made it special. When you guys make the next one don't change a thing!!! 10/10
This would be a great series!
Great job guys, if this had been a full lenght film I would have watched the whole thing. The voice dubbing was a little bad, but the cinematography more than made up for it. Keep it up, I want more!
Positive side - Big effort to get the audience into a known story line. Negative - No background information leading into the scene nor characters. Fighting scene, could have been either longer and more fist fighting or shorter if everybody has guns. or fists and as soon as any side begin to lose, then the gun start to pull out. or a hand granade and everybody dies. Positive again - characters are played by good looking actors or not so depending on what side of the line they are. Anyways. even though it is not a great short clip, i vote for a like for keeping the sci-fi short film movement alive. Note, put a bit of science or factual in the clip, that makes SciFi movies great, like a plain drama as First Signal
rabbit I hate watching a good short that I can't continue, pretty good boys
Great film. Would like to see more. Thanks.
To be honest, minus a few things here and there I personally would like to see a full length with a decent budget and enough time of course. Plus Fray hot as hell and kicked some ass.
Is this a "proof of concept" or a pilot for something potentially bigger? Previous comments on the cardboard acting are spot on, but if it got commissioned, a good director would kick them into touch. The setting, and writing are pretty good though, straight out of a comic. It left me wanting to see the next episode(s)!
Hey, sorry for taking a while to answer. It was originally thought of as a "proof of concept" but just became a too-long-short. Proof-of-concepts are usually really short, like one minute and just mostly show shots.
You've got something decent here. Hope you get the funding to progress this to a higher level.
15:30 "Im in, all three inches. Cant you tell?"
Well it's some of the worst dialogue I've heard in a while. The acting I think suffered because of the horrible dialogue. The rest, directing, cinematography, action, editing, etc. was fine. I would say Mikko Lopponen (who wore many hats in this short film) should try directing some things he did not write. Good films start with good stories and good writing, and that is where this one went bad. Otherwise I think it could have been good with a better blueprint to work from. I say this because I think I see potential in Lopponen's directing abilities (and even the other hats he wore), just not as a writer. Not trying to be mean, but I watch a LOT of films my whole life and tons of shorts since UA-cam explosion, and am very detailed so I try to separate what's being done. I see a short film that suffered because of writing...fix the blueprint and I think you end up with something much better!!
Worst dialog...Really? Compared to what may I ask? I suppose predator 1 (w/Arnold) was some kind of language masterpiece??? This SciFi short is amazing and values the unspoken meaning of a thing. Old-school. OG. Timeless.
I Loved this Short Movie.
This was brilliant. It reminded me of comics I read growing up like Strontium Dog, and other 2000 AD sci-fi steampunk comics. The acting was better than some of the people here moan about, I mean if you want bad acting go watch Arrow, some of the actors in Arrow that play the villains need acting classes.
Waoo!. This is excelent. I love the ending sound tracks where can I download it.
This was so lit! Y'all should put that outro track on soundcloud or something. Would've liked to see a few vampires getting dusted but loved your style nonetheless. :) Thank you for coming through when LURK didn't -_-
Sparky Smith I commented on cuz I really liked it thank you bye bye
Hey dude! I know this is 3 years old, but I'm actually remastering the soundtrack and releasing it under my name in Spotify soon.
I shocked myself and enjoyed this acting a bit hammy but would make a great series xx
Is like watching a school play with better props...
I liked this! It was obvious they are some sort of black market traders trying to make money out of the illegal trade of goods.
Loved this.
i used vic vapor rub on my nail and yes it is growing out, back to a healthy nail, used it every night
"Give me a drink, the usual". Are you kidding? And of course a worm! I'm wondering now how many cliches are going to be in this movie!
Cool little short. I think the music competed with the dialogue a bit. But, I liked the cinematography and graded look.
Thanks VFX Todd! Cinematography and the grade is I think our best asset here.
This had a lot of potential if not for the stale lines for the characters.
Lots of various types and scenes... a learning process
Great concept. Steampunk is an awesome universe. This is an effort that doesn't make it somehow.
Wish someone would make a full length movie.
Moody, Bladerunnerish, very entertaining.....and good soundtrack....Do some more!
Nice, very cool looking forward to seeing more
Really like this concept you should make more plenty for you to build on could be a good series
If you made this film....The possibilities would be endless. What is stopping you?
It has potential. We need more bad a** chicks. Thank you for posting and God Bless from Florida.
Cool ! Anymore of this Fray story line ?
I've written a huge ass storyline though how I can get that forwards is anybodys guess!
Crowdfunding? I'm not rich but I'd be willing to put up some money and I'm sure others here would be willing to help as well.
Crowdfunding is illegal in Finland. They will need to get a foreign agent to handle the funding and then cotract with them for production to move funds, legacy laws and paranoia rule in Finland.
I liked the short and would gladly watch more. Redubbing it with better flow would ramp it up a lot.
Kalle Pihlajasaari. Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware that was the case in Finland. Please excuse my ignorance. Might it be possible to register a Finnish production company outside of Finland, perhaps?
Hey Kalle! Crowdfunding is not illegal IF you sell a product. So if we basically sell a dvd or a downloadable link (for a future download) then it's legal. Just giving money without anything in return is illegal (for example a lot of crowdfunding projects have these "one dollar for special thanks" parts that are illegal here). It's a pretty weird law. There's a finish crowdfunding site Mesenaatti that seems to still be up properly. P.S Hei, toinen suomalainen!
best sci fi short film
At the beginning the girl is like touch me and loose the arm.
No baby girl. You have to say. Touch me and you'll be pulling back a stump.
Loved it! Nice work.
Lots of fun to watch.
Now this was cool.... FRAY is bad ass. Even if she did get her butt beat
Very interesting! Good blocking and framing, decent cinematography, sound design and a curious script. My thanks to all involved in your 'little no budget sci-fi short film'. It's refreshing to see what new talent can create outside of the mainstream. I sense this is not the last we'll see of Fray? Have you considered crowdfunding for future projects? I've worked as a support actor on various low budget projects. medium budget TV shows and films and high budget Hollywood trash (well I have to make a living and I have bills to pay), but I always prefer working with a smaller, dedicated crew with a vision. Good luck to you all.
Hey landscape detective! Thanks for your comments! Yeah, I've thought about crowdfunding but I feel that we still have to improve before going there!
This is the future? Doesn't seem to have shifted from the days when Tina Turner was leaping from a jeep togged up in leather ammo belts and a furry bikini.,Thunderdrome , Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark. etc..Least to us older people it doesn't.
Quite good, but I wouldn't call it Steampunk but rather Cyberpunk. Reminds me of Firefly.
2 stars. Nothing good EVER comes from watching syfy shorts that end with a WTF? Need more....and what was that? "Lady....you don't know what she is"
This has a Blade runner type feel and tone that I really like. I could see this as the opening for a longer film. Too bad your other film is so much darker, so much more violently graphic. Often what is left to the imagination is far more poignant.
Very enjoyable! Many a good friendship has started over a bar fight.
A fight with the bald guy and the drunk blond it would be awesome
great short film, It kept my interest right through
am ever so pleased that at the end of my trawl I found myself here --- this is very good.
Loved it. Nice and gritty.
Yes, though it will probably we a bit different (we will make some changes to everything)
Alright.... we play it your way.... this time
It had appeal regardless of all the well studied critiques. The chick needed more grunt but the guy played a blunt instrument better than Schwarzy.
How they get Jeremy Remmer to act in this?
Hix commitment to the role is amazing. He must have put on at least 75 pounds for this!
Let's see. The female did work for the guy with the snake. He wouldn't pay her money owed. Beats her up. She eats a worm, 'Stranger' sits down and says he'll help her get her money. She goes to 'another guy' and gets him to protect her if things go bad... again. 'Another guy' won''t help 'stranger' or, apparently, help her get her money? Why not? He didn't have her back the first time. Why not?"Stranger' smuggles a firearm into the bar. Great surprise! "Another guy' has a Blaster and no one says anything. Bartender says "No fights!" Well, they just had one earlier and what does he do when this one breaks out? Nada. Did the actor portraying the bartender pay the director for a speaking part? 'Another guy' blows someone into next week. 'Another guy' already 1/5th of the way there. Why stop now? Just kill the'stranger' the 'snake guy' and his minions with that toaster oven of a gravity beam projector he has. Less mess for the bartender, the woman gets her money and maybe 'another guy' gets laid down the road.
If acting consisted of delivering all your lines very slowly and in an unemotional monotone, these people would all deserve Oscars.
