I told a teacher that the thing we were doing in class was pointless and she replied by saying, "I know, but it's part of the curriculum. I don't want to teach it and I know you kids don't want to learn about it. There's much better things we could be doing, but we have to do this."

I remember in 7th grade we learned about the history of the Christmas tree, they gave us a long ass, historical text about it. I was just like '' WHO on earth needs this knowledge? "and I don't remember exactly what the teacher said, but I remember that she was lowkey offended and said something along the lines of '' You will need this later in life''... I felt like she was being stupid, obviously I didn't read the text and to this day I have no regrets

I'm the opposite. I have this facade of comedy and stupidity around me, Which is easy to maintain and hard to break, instead of showing my intelligence. I write books and I am enthralled with anything philosophical. I just don't want the vulnerability of being wrong to go around with me for the better part of my developing self to deal with.

I can also accept I'm wrong. What I can't accept is being branded for putting my hand up to answer questions in class, having everyone steal and pass around my graded tests and picking on me for getting something right, then the hypocrisy of later picking on me for getting something wrong, when I was never really anything special. "The smart kid" was in quotation marks for a reason.

I actually had this moment in school. My train of thought went like this:
Why am I learning square roots?
    For my future.
Why do I need to prepare for my future?
So you can have a good future.
Okay, say I had a great life. What happens when it ends?
(At this point in my life, I had converted from Christianity to Agnostic Atheism)
    Nothing happens. That's it.
Every human being that has ever existed has died. I'm going to die too.
Let's think about the big picture. How many humans are there?
    7 billion.
I feel so insignificant. And all of humanity is contained on this tiny planet.
This planet is tiny compared to the Milky Way, and the Milky Way is nearly invisible when compared to all the other galaxies in the universe.
And this planet is going to be incinerated by the sun eventually.
All of humanity is so insignificant, and so temporary.
    Why even try?
Everything I accomplish will eventually be forgotten, no matter how amazing I am.
    So why even try?
Yep. I went from "Why should I learn square roots?" all the way to "Is life completely meaningless?"
This all happened in the span of a few minutes.

Sophie Turner No, people take risks because they might gain something from it. If people only took risks because they'd eventually die and that'd be the end of it, that implies that theists do not take risks, which is absolutely untrue. I mean, look at the risks priests take when they molest children!

Emily Black I am what you are, I don't try but I've gotten 1 non-A grade (Algebra) throughout grades 6 and 7 (I'm going into 8th), however I am known as the person who jokingly calls himself crazy, the class clown, can't spell (a lot of this was spell checked), and is a know-it-all when it comes to random trivia and in general because I take the time to read about 10th grade physics. The reason I got that B was because while the teacher was explaining everything I would read books about astronomy and particle physics. (Everyone hated that teacher but not me)
Thankfully my somewhat large social group are either people who also game to the X-TREAM, or are also ridiculously intelligent. I've also been taking ballet since I was 5 and am now 13, I preformed as the prince in The Nutcracker last Christmas. I happen to not get made fun of for it just because I'm male.
Well this was shorter in my head.

I had my own "eureka" moment at the end of 10th grade, which revolved around art. I had taken art classes before, such as in middle school and elementary, but never anything too serious; I was far from an artist. As I sat in English class that day, I realized how much free time I had all the time in school. I needed something to do to fill all this wasted time, so I took out a sheet of paper and decided to draw an eye, just by the trial and error of getting the rough shape correct. At that moment I decided I wanted to become an artist because I realized something very valuable: every time you try at something and do it wrong, you know what not to do next time. As long as I learn from my mistakes, by the sheer nature of these things, I WILL get better!

    • @angelpygs72
      @angelpygs72 8 років тому +1

I had a eureka moment too.
all the fucking art teachers in the school are crazy, and the ones that aren't just got laid off because of the 1.1 million dollar defecit brought on by the plague of trying to compete with more prestigious schools in terms of sports and instead of the money going to something useful like the lunch that sustains half the school, it went to the goddamn pool.

I am from Switzerland, where we have to learn EVEN MORE to pass the finals. And that's nothing personal, it's just that the bar is INSANELY high (Some of the maths you learn for the Abi, we have to learn in like 9th grade). I am half a year away from finally leaving behind school, and I'm basically grasping at straws by now. The one and only reason I still get up every day is because of my friends. Because they get how it feels. The last 3 years have sent me into a depression, none of the things I loved to do really make me happy anymore and I have zero motivation for anything. It's a horrible, disencouraging feeling that makes you slowly hate yourself for not doing better, when in truth you feel like you're slowly and inevitably being sucked dry of all life. I just want it to be over. I hate my current life, but I love living. When this year is done, I'll finally be free. I have so many things to do.

I'm in sixth grade in the USA so I haven't had much experience with school as a whole, so take this with a grain of salt as my opinion might change over a couple of years, so bare with me
I think mandatory education is a must, just not the way school is doing it
1.) They're teaching you things that I, and the majority of my class won't need in the real world, Dave talked about this, and this was the main point in the video so I won't go on about it.
2.) They don't give you freedoms a normal person would have, if you have to go to the bathroom, ask, if you need to wash your hands, ask, if you need some water, ask, if you need to do basically anything that isn't sit down and do what the teacher says, you have to ask
3.) I agree, they should open up about mathematics, literature, and science, but not to the point of what they are doing, yes make us learn the basics, and then let us choose if our career needed it, or we liked learning about it, then we should go to that class, but if you disliked it, you don't have to go to the class, you already have a basic understanding and what you would need in the real world as a normal human being by fifth grade.
4.) It's mandatory, everyday mandatory, Mandatory education is fantastic, it's a human right after all, but if we're sick we shouldn't be punished "So you didn't come to school yesterday, here is the work, an top of work that you missed!" they make you feel like you are a trash human being because you were sick, just let us be, also they reward attendance, oh you came to school everyday, even when you were sick, so you could probably spread it to other classmates, here's a prize
5.) They (mostly) do absolutely nothing about bullying, they hang all of these posters "no bullying" but when somebody does bully, the teacher doesn't even bat an eye.
6.) This one is really dependent on your parents, but I feel like it fits the majority, you see, if your parents don't care about your grades much go to 7, you see, were going back to point 3. I feel like parents judge you by your grades, you get one bad grade, oh that's it, and they punish you. It's really stupid too, we take these standardized tests, some people are good at them, and some just isn't their cup of tea, they don't handle them well, but you are expected to handle it well, and answer them correctly.
7.) I feel like the teachers don't teach you, now hear me out they do teach you, but not really, they say "read the packet" or tell you to read something yourself to learn it, some people who suffer from mental disorders or people who don't digest information from reading text very well, they're out of luck cause the teacher is getting paid to hand out the papers.
8.) They say school is suppose to help you in your career, and yes it could help you, if your into the jobs that come to head when somebody asks you what you think of when you hear jobs, but not other ones like an artist or music player, I feel like school thinks math is more important than art to an aspiring artist
9.) It sucks the creativity right out of kids, "this is how it says it" "stop doing it that way" "no I didn't tell you to do that" I feel like these come out of teachers mouths way more than it should, oh you found a new strategy to answering a problem that could make it more efficient so we're not wasting as much time on one subject as we have to, nah, we got it the old fashioned way and the old fashioned way is always better, but really, is it?
10.) School is WAY too stressful, the one minute of free time you get is devoured by homework, like heres a normal schedule for what I might be facing in the future. Probably 9 hours of sleep a night, school is 8 - 3 so 7 hours, 3 hours of homework and 1 hour of studying for a test probably tomorrow, add that up you get 20. 24 - 20 is fucking 4 hours of time to ourselves, only FOUR FUCKING HOURS JESUS CHRIST HOW INSANE IS THAT JESUS CHR- no wonder the suicide rate of students in 1/12 THAT IS FUCKING INSANITY
I could go on and on about how school is a fucking waste of time, but I don't need to go any further, I'm only scratching the surface of why I hate school so much, so yeah that is my top 10 complaints, not in any particular order. just the ones that come to mind. If you read all of this you deserve a cookie

We have to choose a third language (we can choose between german and french but I am not interested in either of these languages),have to learn English, our main language which is Greek and also Ancient Greek which is a "dead language" meaning it isn't spoken anywhere. And on top of that,we have to spend a good 15 hours a week being taugh things that we won't be using in the future. And of course all that with the excuse of "finding a job".Don't get me wrong, being concearned about our future is importand, but I am 13, I spend my whole day studying and I have a master degree in English,a language I don't regularly use.Things would be better if we could choose a specific path we want to take and not spend countless hours on things that are in insignificant to us.

Actually I started talking to my teacher about how pointless I thought the majority of what we were learning in school was, and my teacher said 'then why don't you teach the class?' And I said, 'OK sure...' And I taught my class on what a mortgage was and that there are people who will make you pay more than you have to for your mortgage, what can happen because of this, and the many ways to stop them... And my teacher was shocked xD I should be a teacher... 🤔🤔

Still in school over here :] I used to be "the smart kid" as well, and everyone seemed so happy every time I did bad. It was this weird distortion of feedback that made me drop everyone and everything, and begin at a new school away from my friends. I figured that being lonely wasn't so bad as long as I got to do as well as I wanted. And it wasn't so bad. However, I have become more aware of the fact that possibly nothing of the information I get in school will be of any use to me afterwards, so my interest is lost, my grades are falling and I'm constantly bored. Yay school.

As someone who is a little a head of you on that road: anytime you're in a new setting with people that don't really know you, don't let them know how smart you are so quickly. You don't really need to play dumb (although it has proven quite entertaining in some instances) just don't let it become one of the first adjectives they stick you with.
There's something about being "smart" that makes people inclined to reduce you to a one-dimentional character.

School hasn't really changed. Everyone in my Pre-Calculus class constantly asks, "When are we gonna use this in life?" The American education system is so fucked up that if you aren't a good test taker, regardless of how intelligent you may be, your chances at scholarships, good grades, and recognition (ha! like intellect is rewarded at all anyway) greatly diminish. Meanwhile my generation is twisted beyond belief and the 'current' generation refuses to acknowledge it. But hey, isn't that just the way it goes?

    • @851852093114208513
      @851852093114208513 10 років тому

I would argue that if you're incapable of applying any knowledge you may or may not have, you're not really that intelligent, and so your complaints are irrelevant. Having a hard time grasping the subject matter is one thing. I can acknowledge that. That seems like a valid claim. Just in general not being able to remember which of these four possible answers is correct just specifically during a test, or not being able to do a math problem just because the piece of paper it's written on says "TEST" in the corner? That just sounds like an excuse.

    • @StargazinGummybears
      @StargazinGummybears 10 років тому +4

It's funny how you claim I'm not really intelligent, when you know nothing about me. I, in fact, am an excellent test-taker and I'm nearly the top of my class. I speak from friend's experiences. Give them flashcards describing events in history. Done. Give them a homework assignment in math. Done. Have a discussion on the meaning of the Great Gatsby. Done. However, place them in a high-stakes position, as many assessments are nowadays, and their nervousness gets the better of their intelligence. I'm simply saying that "tests"" are inferior ways of evaluating the knowledge one accumulates throughout a class and are too heavily relied upon for deciding the fate of a student's future.

talknerdytome sevens - It's funny how incredibly common it is to use a nonspecific 2nd person pronoun in hypothetical situations, and yet you assumed I was talking about you, personally.
So, what is the difference between a test and a worksheet, apart from the label? Why is a study guide just a normal, easy thing to do, and yet a test (you know, more or less exactly the same thing), is somehow notably more difficult.

    • @StargazinGummybears
      @StargazinGummybears 10 років тому +1

I can understand the pronoun, thank you very much, but the format of the statement..."...and so your complaints are irrelevant." apparently didn't translate to your theoretical situation.
Pressure. That is the difference. Don't people get nervous before job interviews? Don't people fear public speaking? Those apparently aren't any different than having a normal conversation according to your reasoning.

    • @851852093114208513
      @851852093114208513 10 років тому

talknerdytome sevens - They're not, though? A job interview is just an interview trying to gauge your capacity to do a particular job. Yeah, if you're really desperate for a job, it'll probably start to come across like that, eventually, but it's not a super huge deal if your entire life isn't riding on this one moment.
Talking to a large group of people isn't fantastically different than just talking to one or two people, they just get less chances to respond because there are so many of them and you're expected to be the one speaking, anyway. Especially when so many people have problems with public speaking. Apparently, most people have a huge problem with it. Why should you be nervous? They're all exactly the same. You're fitting in more than anything else.

It's really just sad what school in the US has become. We memorize things to pass standardized tests to get the schools we spend the majority of early waking life in more funding. This repeats until college where we are sent off with little real-world skill other than taking tests, the money for which puts us thousands of dollars in debt with no real guarantee to get a job. Passions and interests are disregarded during high school for what will "look good on a college application" or "serve you in the real world", while at the same time classes like higher math classes with literally no value in the real world are suggested, and sometimes required for admission into higher-level colleges. Personally, I've all but given up my dream of becoming a successful DJ/Producer because for the last two years I've gone to school, came home drained and laden with homework, and had nothing to put into my actual passions and talents, to the point where I can barely make music anymore. It's honestly quite depressing and I know a bunch of people who are in situations just like mine. It's a modern epidemic, and the reason for it is our outdated school system, which is a relic from a wartime when the goal was to get kids in and out of school and into the workforce with a basic talent to follow orders and quickly and efficiently as possible.

I'm still in school and I think about all of this every day, and have been thinking about this for many years. It may sound weird, but it kind of hurts. Both physically and mentally. I'm also really stressed which is not good. I don't really get that good grades, or rather I don't fail but I rarely get an A. But I don't study much. Though I just turned 15 which means next year I have to study to get into another good school and not disappoint my parents. But why should I study for something I'm not interested in? Why are others telling me what I should learn and think for 7 hours a day? (If not more) I don't really have anyone to talk to about this either. I don't trust easily because of past experiences so it takes a long time for me to build a friendship. So I just write down what I'm thinking. I've written so much that I could make it into a book. I'm still in school, I'm in year 11 for anyone who cares about that. I've never had the reputation as the smart kid because I'm an average student, I'm on C and D grades mostly. I have quite a few reputations to be honest, I have the reputations of: emo, nerd, depressed ,insane and freak to name a few. Admittedly I enjoy emo music, I am a nerd I love video games and comics and anime and that sort of stuff. I'm not really insane I just have a knowledge of killing from anime and video games which people are ignorant enough to think is about real murder. They're right about the depressed part because I have been in a bad enough way to self harm, I did that for about 4 or 5 months. I'm known as a freak because of my emo music taste, the fact I spend so much time alone playing games and the fact that despite being a straight 15 year old guy I don't much care about sex.
Now don't get me wrong from what I said before I do somehow have friends, believe me I have no idea how, and they're awesome. Despite the fact I do have friends I keep to myself a lot, just the other day a friend said about me "I've been friends with the guy for 5 years and I only just know him" which sums up how quiet I am.
Sorry I've been rambling on about stuff which you probably don't care about. I could write a whole essay about this stuff but no one would care and it would take a while. Sorry again for my ramblings wasting your time if you've read this far.

I definitely see myself in this. In school I just could not find the appeal of art and music. My entire focus was on school work and it wasn't until half way through my second year of university and looking at industry placements that it hit me - What the fuck am I doing with my life?
I'd spent so much time making sure that I had everything I "needed" to do the things that I wanted, that I never actually figured out what I wanted. When I wasn't happy in school because of not fitting in or being bullied I was told that one day I'd be successful, and these people who put their energy into other things would be worse off. Utter bullshit. I remember feeling really angry - I'd worked so hard to be "successful" but the people who seemed to discover how to have fun early on in life were still having fun and I was stuck constantly worrying about failing tests and not being proud of things I was told I should be proud of. (Looking back on this, the attitude of "it will get better over time" is utterly toxic. Only YOU have the power to change things in your life. You might get less comments about being overweight but that doesn't do a fat lot of good if YOU still hate being overweight.)
Of course, resetting to the complete opposite attitude of acting purely on impulse isn't any better. Depression has been a bitch to overcome, but at least it let me discover the side of me that I lost because I didn't have time for or closed away to stop the bullying. Now I can rebuild my life with a bit of confidence that it will be a life that I want to live, and not just hitting the goals set by other people.
I think mostly it's just a shame that it took me 20 years to figure out all that. And the fact that I'm sure 16 year old me would probably think less of me now, even though I'm so much more whole as person.
School is not an environment for raising well-rounded people. It did an OK job at teaching me things, and it's not like a regret learning what I did. But it did a terrible, terrible job at preparing me for LIFE. Not just on a practical level of self-efficacy, but also an emotional level of how to life a fulfilling life outside of a job.

I know how a lot of people are talking about school in the comments but I just want to say that your hair, your eyes, lips and teeth are beautiful. You are an artists dream, you have such an interesting style. I have to say I've never seen anyone like you before. I would love to draw you so I think I will. On the topic of school though, I was kind of like you. I read at a high level for a long time, I loved writing and learning and my parents always introduced me to friends as "our Hermione". I prided myself on my intelligence and always aimed to get better each year.
However when I hit 14/15 I slowed down. I was hit with this sudden bout of unreasonably heavy sadness and I couldn't concentrate on anything, the things I used to love became unappealing and the colour seemed to drain from everything I found happiness in until everything was grey. My grades have been dropping ever since. What makes it worse is that I can't afford to have them drop because my GCSE's are this year and if I fail them I'm doomed. I have to pick it up but I don't seem to have the strength. I just want to sleep all the time. I don't know if its laziness or if something is terribly wrong with me. That being said, I'm going to try my absolute hardest this year and I'm going to achieve what I can. I'm going make myself proud. I'm going to pick it up. Then my new years resolution will be to find out what's happened in the past year to make me feel like this.I hope you will wish me luck. I wish you luck (yes you, reading this) with whatever it is you're going through right now. You can make it work. Keep your head up.And Dave, stay beautiful!

School should teach people to learn. It should teach people that learning is fun. I mean, does it even have to teach that? Just look at young children. They think everything is interesting and they are interested in learning about everything. But when people go to school, they kind of lose the interest - I don't know why that happens. School should motivate people to learn. Most learning happens outside of school. If you are truly interested in something, you'll figure out about it. I think school should teach how to figure out about things. It should support people's interests. It shouldn't teach a lot of information (besides the basics), it should teach more about how to find information. It should motivate, not make people lose their interest in finding out about things.
I do think the things you learn in primary school are kind of basic knowledge - there's nothing complex in it, they are the basics. But after that people should have more freedom. They should be able to choose what subjects they want to focus on. Because let's be honest - how much do you remember from the subjects that you weren't interested in? I can tell I don't remember much from them. I learned a lot more about the subjects that I was interested in. When you are motivated, you will learn a lot easier.
School isn't all about career. That's what universities and professional schools and the like are about. Primary school is about basic knowledge. It's about learning to learn about things. It's about learning to appreciate and understand different opinions, different kinds of people, different cultures... Or at least that's how it should be.
The teaching methods could be improved. It's not easy, of course. If people had figured out the way, the system would already be better. But I'm sure the system has got better over time.
I'm not a school teacher but I study music pedagogy. I have been thinking about this - I was actually thinking of becoming a school teacher but music was my passion so that's why I chose music over it. At least music theory teaching has improved a lot - it is a lot more practical than it used to be when I took music theory lessons. I'm sure many people have similar views as I do and I'm sure the system will be improved. As I said, the music theory teaching has already become a lot more practical. I expect similar things to have happened in school teaching. I don't know about other countries but that's how it's in Finland.

I was lucky, I took Health and Social Care in Years 10 and 11 which involved a work skills unit, in which we learned about being interviewed and taught about applying for jobs, but taxes, loans and money managing in general we were never taught.

I went through a similar phase in high school where I thought it was all irrelevant. I hated the abstract math, advanced physics, biology, etc. but by the end of it I was glad I took all of those classes because now I use concepts I learned from all of them in my job. I'm a 3d modeler, animator, and vfx artist and all of that "irrelevant" math suddenly became relevant, I need to know linear equations, I needed to know concepts of physics to recreate them in animation, I needed to know the difference between sin cos and tan. Knowing how things work on the inside, biology, has helped my modeling and has also helped me see beauty on a microscopic level and how animals should move, and how muscles should move. The advanced math has also helped me with problem solving in my day to day life. Everything is math and when you realize that many things become much simpler. No knowledge is irrelevant or useless unless you don't use it, and that is entirely up to you.
I don't think schools should stop teaching the things they are teaching now because I would probably have never found my love for 3d. I did teach a great portion of the 3d concepts too myself but that doesn't mean I didn't need school.
In short the knowledge schools teach isn't irrelevant or useless but they do need too teach more important life skills like finance, child care, first aid, etc. Luckily I went to a good school and did learn a lot about all of these topics, except first aid.

I almost ranted at my teacher about how useless a school topic was when she told me to pay attention. Then I said "I'd rather follow my own pursuits." A couple minutes after she came up to me and told me to get off my iPad (we use them for school stuff, but I was making music) I just ignored her. She then pulled my earphones out, everyone heard the track I was working on, it went silent, the teacher looked like she was gonna explode and then: the only friend that knew I made music, started to clap. The whole class joined in, now that teacher actually respects me a little. Great experience and great story. Now my friends sample my music and my girlfriend has even started to take a liking to some of my tracks. Though she won't stop picking on me for not putting lyrics in, I keep saying "if I did you'd be the first to hear it"

I always think a lot about that school thing. How it is not that important, how it's wasting SO much time of my life when I could actually be doing something that I enjoy. In my opinion, school destroys creativity.
That's why I want to leave so badly, but I don't have the courage to do it. I've never seen anyone do such thing and I'm really scared of the possible consequences. I'd love to spend most of my time with music, since that's what I really want my future to be about. Not maths or history. I know it's important to have basic knowledge, but we should get that education by ourselves. That way, we'd learn things that we're actually interested in and a lot more, in general. D:
This education system really grinds my gears.
    It needs to change.

My school years weren't too terrible until the end really, but I did have to repeat 2nd grade, I think.
    My schooling went as follows:
    1st Grade
    2nd Grade
    2nd Grade
    3rd Grade
    4th Grade
    5th Grade
    6th Grade
    7th Grade
    8th Grade
    Freshman(9th Grade)
    Sophomore(10th Grade)
    Sophomore(online schooling)
    Dropped out, got GED
Here's the thing, though. When I started high school, I had a lump in my neck that made me very lethargic and disoriented with no real sense of balance.
After some point, I had to keep coming home from school and waddya know? It turned out to be throat cancer, yay~?
After that, my school threatened to put me back into 10th Grade for the 3rd consecutive year, so I, instead, studied for and passed my GED.
I was a bit like you, though, in some respects. I was also the smart kid, but I was also the lazy kid, y'know? That one kid with a lot of wasted potential? I had really strong bonds with all of my teachers and even the staff, some really good friends that I still have today(I'm 19 currently), and some good and bad experiences.
I got in trouble a lot for really stupid reasons, such as: aggressively disposing of a yogurt container and skipping study hall despite attending the same one every day.
So, long story short, my school days were simultaneously very good and quite bad.
(Apologies for such a long post)

It is actually 2016 when I'm writing this and yet education still hasn't changed, in my opinion. This is a major disaster, to me, since they believe that I want to go on to be a hard working "desk person". I don't want to be that. I've always wanted to be a singer and UA-camr, but many of my teachers who I've told about what I wish my future to be have, surprisingly, tried to discourage me from such, and I quote, "A silly job because you have so much more potential". I find this disrespectful since their my teachers and should push me in the direction I want to follow. I'm 13 by the way, which puts me in year 9. I find school hard and always have but teachers at my school believe that even in year 8 we should be able to know what we want to do in the future which is why they made us chose our GCSE options. In year 8, to follow them through in year 9. We have 3 year and 5 GCSE slots that we can choose our courses. I, personally, choose to do GCSE music, drama, fine art, geography and triple science, with the mandatory English and maths. (Because I choose to do triple science I do physics, biology and chemistry in separate lessons with specialised teacher is those fields) But some of my year weren't so lucky, as their parents choose for them, but I'm not getting into that as that's a hole different rant. The only things that upset me about this is that I had so much stress building up to the time I handed in my from that I cried and that's very hard to make me do such a thing. The second thing being that I was just growing up, hadn't really had much maturity. I mean, sure I more than man kids my age as I have autism, like your friend Dan Bull, but in some sense I'm very lucky. From my autism I've gained a vocabulary of an 19/20 year old, the only down side to my condition is that going from brain to paper is very difficult. Say I think of an amazing sentence or way of explaining something and I have it all planned out, but when I then go to write it down, I forget it. Then are unable to remember it again which is then most annoying thing in the world to me. And my final point is that I was 11/12 when I choose these. In my opinion, that certainly not old enough to choose my future and understand what I want to do with my life, and even though I have a very rough idea of what I want to do, they are unable to cater to my specific needs in the school. Their training us to be certain people to do certain jobs which I don't want to go into.Very sorry for the long boring rant, Dave or anyone else, but thank you for reading this.

agreed. I have to deal with being sat down ever so often for the school to knock on my head and say, "remember, you still have to choose college and a career and manage community service with raising money for prom and also you gotta try And do homework and since you want to write and already are you gotta do that too and oh yeah we'll help by putting you into an English class three grades below what you can do and say you're too low a grade to go higher in English" And some other stuff. my school thinks that the definition of giving kids options is having a set amount of options chosen for them and letting them pick which one they like best. I can agree with your comment entirely, more or less on a spiritual level, purely because of the fact that your school is similar to mine. choose your career and what you want to do even though we've only shown you what we want you to do and you still haven't had enough options to make an informed decision!

I was a C student in High School and since I was small would often just try to learn things for myself though research and curiousity. Being in the South, I didn't have much options. we didn't have a disposable income, cars didn't really interest me, but I found a fascination in firearms. A machine marvel that you held in your hands. My father had a semiauto Ruger 10/22 and ever since I was small I wondered, "how does it work? How does it automatically eject the shells out, without some kind of battety?"
After that point I just kept getting nosier until I just taught myself (as much as I could without internet at the time) as much as I could possibly learn. Even though now I'm in college, I still have that interest of teaching myself about things, I still am fascinated by firearms, even if the ADHD that has crept into my life stumbles my progress. Cheers!

+DaClassyDragon your right the current version of it is completely pointless. The problem is there are so much stuff on there that doesn't need to be, and some stuff that should be isn't, that it completely fails to achieve it's own goal. and the way they are trying to use it also undermines their attempts to make a proper one. Like Dave said there are some common things but the schools also teach a lot of things are are not needed by most people and since they are using common core as the what topics are important in every class in every grade, discounting the elective classes that don't really come into play until there's only a few years left. There isn't that much stuff that everyone has a common need for so using it that way it can't help but to get bloated past the point of actual usefulness. But it's not just the school system for kids that does this. The adult version (college) does this to an extent as well. Honestly I'm at a loss to figure out why I need to two science classes, 3 history classes, 2 humanities classes, not counting the 2 English composition classes I also have to take and a public speaking class before I can even start to get to learning what I sighed up to learn there computer programming.

But what point is pointless knowledge without a point?
You will NEVER need to know anything about history unless you are a historian or a teacher of history; the only other time I can think of in my 1-in-the-morning-brain is for trivial reasons, (game-shows or entertainment purposes)
A deeper* knowledge of any subject matter won't affect you passion for it, once you know the basics you'll have the understanding of your passions, iff you spend 3 months developing that solely, you'll know for sure if that's where you want to go in life.
*As deep as Secondary School can be in the UK's current education system.
And you have six years (previously 4) in secondary education in the UK; There is no reason for you not to be taught what YOU want to be taught instead of what they FORCE you to learn. If you had the chance to spend 4 to 6 years deciding what you want to be and then learning that while you're still young, wouldn't take it? The current system only ends up in some of the most important years of your life being wasted by being given garbage instead of information and experience in what you are passionate about!
You don't need to know about the lives of all 6 of King Henry VIII's wives to know what your passion is! I know my Passions are in Programing, Food, Smithing, and Art in all it's forms. Wanna know when I discovered my passions? When I spent a year out of education!
The amount of time spent learning things that will never be used is too damn high, The basics should be taught to everyone; Maths, English; The laws of Physics; and general life skills. But once someone knows what they WILL need, they should be given freedom to learn what they want to learn.

    • @ArguingRug
      @ArguingRug 10 років тому +1

I disagree referring back to my original argument. Your example about the king's wives does teach you a lot more than just knowing he had 6 wives. it, unspokenly, gives you and understanding of facets humans are capable of doing and the lives they live. In the future you may have some weird conversation about people and you will refer back to your knowledge about the king and his 6 wives and that will give you insight on how to reply or how not to reply. Information, no matter how irrelevant it seems teaches you more than just the fact it presents you with

not really, i mean school needs to teach you how to read and write. and how to do a grammar. and about laws. also is where you are supposed to learn maths. public school is supposed to teach you the things almost every citizen should know.
i agree one of those things should be how to teach yourself but that is not the only thing. and in certain countries (north korea for an obvious example) they dont want you to be able to teach yourself, so school isnt supposed to do that there.
i remember in school. i was learning programming (C#) and the teacher said that the trick to solving almost any problem is google it. and that he, as a professional (and very good) computer/tech support person, does that often.

    Several comments;
    1) I used to do a lot of substitute teaching. Too many schools have been transformed into a type of propaganda tool, to the point of 3rd graders having trouble with 11-5.
    2) I despise rap. If one actually listens, (not just hearing) to music such as Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite", or Rossini's "William Tell Overture", will come to realize that some forms of music, are actually better than others.
    3) Back to schools, they have fallen into the program of trying to force you what to think, instead of how to think.
    4) Another trap schools fall into; a cookie cutter syndrome, that some children just are not able to deal with.

I've listened to and played in the Nutcracker suite but I still prefer to listen to Susumu Hirasawa and anime soundtracks. Don't try to say some music is better than others; it sounds both arrogant and ignorant.

True, music appreciation is subjective. However, there is a reason why some music from hundreds of years ago, are still popular.

One of the recent "Lone Ranger" movies had the William Tell overture on it. It brought chills like in very few modern music pieces.

Saying you despise rap music is like saying you despise music with snare drums. Rap music is any music with rapping. When one raps they're using their voice as an instrument, similar to singing without melody. So when you rap your voice is essentially a percussion instrument. Musically speaking the only difference between a song with rapping and without rapping is just that it has someone using their voice like a percussion instrument over the top
All other aspects of rapping and the problem most people have with it are lyrical. And lyrics are not music. They are poetry (even lyrics that are bad are still poetry because they're just words). So I can see why you may despise a lot of rap music because a lot of it has lyrics about crappy subjects but regardless for you to write off any song with rapping in it is stupid.

I’m still in school, I love to draw, I do it at break dinnner in the halls before and after school, I draw in class sometimes on my hand if I don’t have paper. And pepole always act like it’s a waste of time even my own art teacher has tried to discourage my more anime-cartoon drawing style. She focuses more time on a girl in the class who is amazing at drawing realism and it’s always be more like her. It’s like now they’ve introduced creative subjects they are draining the creativity out of them and treating art as one thing to draw-realism that’s not what I want to do I want to be graphic designer

One of my 'eureka' moments in school was when I learned about programming in computer class. I was told something very vague about batch files, then after that I was slightly interested. Over time, that 'slightly' became 'very' and the 'very' became 'insanely', because programming was how you created video games, and believe it or not, my very first video game I ever made was in the batch format: an ASCII-art based horror text adventure named 'RED N BLACK'. I still to this day haven't posted it online in batch format, however I managed to make it on a different programming language a couple years back, and it was really good for the time I was making it. but I look back on it and cringe a bit because it was sorta bad to present me. Anyways, I slowly became more interested in programming, and got into an online programming language named Scratch (yes, I did make RED N BLACK there) and started new, but grew more experienced as I knew more about the language. Soon enough, however, I switched rather quickly to GameMaker 8. I still used Scratch every once in a while, but GameMaker 8 was pretty much everything to me at that point. As soon as I realized that GameMaker: Studio was a thing, I IMMEDIATELY switched to GameMaker: Studio because I knew it had promise. However, with the recent release of GameMaker: Studio 2, I'm thinking about switching again, but that will most likely not happen for quite a while since the entire thing seems like just a cash cow. Anyways, that's one of my biggest 'eureka' moments - or rather, 'eureka' spans of time, since it all happened gradually. Thanks for taking the time to read this, and I wish you guys a happy new year from January 2016! :)

i cant sing your cancer away but
i can sing and draw my depressions away (at least it does help a lot)
also being in a good mental state helps with diseases so it doesnt cure it, but helps to stop it :p
or can you use medicine for mental diseases and keep people happy?
art isnt above, but neither its over it

I have the same opinions on every topic discussed in this video. Even as I continue to do well in school, i can’t help but think that almost none of it will be utilized in my later life. The main issue I have with schooling is the amount of emphasis on grading and scores. Even when teachers tell their students that it doesn’t matter what they get, it just matters that they improve, the students who do poorly are treated as failures, whether it be through their parents or the other students surrounding them. The only way for students to truly be learning things that will help them, in my opinion, is to give them more independence in choosing what to do, and helping them succeed in those areas, rather than attempting to get them to understand unimportant information that’ll be forgotten about in a year or so.
