    Just food for thought, I recently corresponded with Richard Turner from Turner engineering in the UK (after I bought a 300tdi performance head) He mentioned that the 3rd exhaust port is by far the hottest point of the engine and that the best way to measure the egt would be at all 4 ports(not practical). We are getting temps at the egr fitting position with give you a very rough average. So definitely staying in the mid 600's is the way to go. Guys who are just sitting under the spec from a reading there are likely exceeding temp at that 3rd port. Need that wiggle room!
    Good video !

      +rocketsurgeon Thanks for the info. Yes I would never suggest (nor do I) taking it close to the 720 degrees - as you say its an average temp and as such should not be the limit. I basically try and stay at 650 degrees and under when towing, and find that there is very little gain in speed pushing it to 720, so why push it. Without towing, even on a steep hill, it never even gets to 600 degrees so i'm laughing.

      +Rover Tasmania Yup sounds very healthy staying in that range, having the gauge you can always back off a tad anyways. I just called up a diesel specialist about getting a proper tune done and the guy didnt want to do it! I have put a bigger intercooler on it and with that ported head it needs a tweak. Spose I will have to do it myself lol.

      +rocketsurgeon Your kidding, a diesel specialist didnt want to do it!?! Well as long as you got the EGT gauge then you know. As long as you got both the egt's in check and the exhaust smoke is to a minimum, you should be OK. Good luck with it.

      +Rover Tasmania yes I was a bit unimpressed to say the least ha. I just put in a order for a new 90 before they all are gone. Looking forward to defender ownership with a warranty!

    Do you have a direct fuel pipe between the lift pump and the filter? I'm rebuilding a 1997 300TDi Defender and I seem to have lost a pipe.

    What I find a little weird is that in normal engine management, if you have high temperatures, the solution is usually to richen the A/F mixture a bit. I was always taught to tune the engine till it is at peak performance, then add little extra fuel to improve cooling. But here you are leaning it out instead. I'm not understanding why that doesn't make the engine get even hotter. is that difference something unique about tuning diesel engines? Or is it somehow related to the turbocharging?

      +reggaerocket you are correct for petrol engines, diesel is entirely different. It was a mind bender for me also at first when i bought a tdi300 many years ago, but once you understand how diesels operate then all will make sense :D

      Thanks. Of course I'm already following back too. Loving the look of the older white rims on your Disco. Was thinking of trying my Defender rims too :)

      @@rovertasmania7033 i do this just as a step between building Camel 93 Sabah replica. :) I needed those rims so i decided to mount as they come to me, in white. Before ill paint everything in sandglow. And ill add 30mm wheel spacers. To compensate narrow tire and 2 inch lift. Whitout lift they fit well, but after lifting car looks flippy and unproportional. Adding little 30mm spaceres will compensate this. Try to find NATO/Wolf defender rims whit more offset ET. ;) If you think about steel rims setup. I don't know how it works in Tasmania but i heard about ,,restrictions for using spacers in AU"

      @@jakubstrumillo Yes, spacers are illegal. So the Defender rims I have are nicely offset (not as much as Forward Control rims) so will look great on the Series 2a and Disco should I try them.

    Mannn that was a great tutorial. I went from a 200 Disco to a 300 Disco 12 months ago and some one fiddled with the pump and didn't use the EGT gauge so it popped a gasket when a chap in our off road club had it. I bought it as is and fixed the head etc and have slowly been trying to tune it back to a strong but powerful level and bought a 3 pod gauge set with boost, temp and voltage. This is a great video on where look, what to adjust and what the temp should be. Where do I get a water temp/lever plug?

    • @rovertasmania7033
      @rovertasmania7033  9 років тому

      +Bernhard Schweighofer Glad it helped out. Sounds like you need a dash pod now (got a vid on that too). As for the water level sensor, Engine Saver (thats what its called), you can get them from www.enginesaver.com.au/. I have a different sensor for water temp, but perhaps the Engine Saver does both level and temps, not sure.

      Haha, I run a a Range Rover Sport 3.0 litre V6. Had it for 9 years and love it. My mate down South Arm Dick Calvert, constantly takes the piss. He like most Australians likes the Toyota Land Cruiser. Stick with the Mother Land and you will be running that old Landy for years to come. The Defenders are now commanding big money back here in POM Rock.

    so if i turn that fuel screw in a little bit it will be faster ?

    • @rovertasmania7033
      @rovertasmania7033  9 років тому

      tfijamez You can turn the 'smoke' screw 1/2 turn perhaps, but dont touch the pin (inside the pump) unless you have an EGT monitoring system fitted, else you can cook your motor! You wont go faster as such, just a little more take off grunt.

      Thanks for reply.Is that the screw with the lock nut on it? wanting to make my dads disco to pull a little better.On my old one was same an ask a local landy man if he could make it go abit better as was only getting 50mph and he turned something (im guessing now it was smoke screw) until it was revving quite high then he turned the idol down and it was silly fast after that. never had any problems it just smoked loads . was this bad for it ? or can i do the same to my dads ? thanks

    • @rovertasmania7033
      @rovertasmania7033  9 років тому +1

      tfijamez Yes, the screw with the lock nut is the smoke screw. If it blows a lot of black smoke then its over-fueling, your wasting fuel. Hard to know why performance is down, lots of things could affect it like dirty air filter or valves out of adjustment. Best setup is to have a little bit of black smoke under load, like going up a hill.
