Dr. Bolin mentions that a gout flare usually begins during sleep, but doesn't mention why that is. The reason is that a gout flare is a direct result of the frequent hypoxic episodes of sleep apnea, which lead to much excess cellular production of uric acid plus diminution of kidney function. Once a diagnosis of gout has been made, follow up needs to include a sleep study. Resolving the sleep apnea not only should prevent the occurrence of future gout flares, but also greatly reduce the risk for future development of many life-threatening diseases. Gout usually is an early warning of sleep apnea!

CPPD feels like broken glass in the joints. I am given mild opiates as i cannot tolerate nsaids. Colchhisine is recommended however that drug does not seem safe. The pain is horrible. Only steroid injections work - for a few months. I have osteoarthritis in many joints - CPPD has set in both wrists, shoulder and knee. Recently new foot pain. I fear additional crystals. CPPD has changed my life for the worst. I hate it.
