I used all the steps you took for my 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix. The final result was no spark on all coils. Which led me the ignition module being the problem. Thank you ScannerDanner.

Seeing your troubleshooting vids makes me realize I should go out and do most of these tests on a *healthy* car so that I know how it should behave. Simple things like the check engine light I can't even recall if it normally comes on, so I think a good idea for any of us is to get to know your own car when it's working, not just when it is not working.

I have noticed a lot of mechanics in my area when a car won't start like this immediately jump to fuel pump issues...my 2002 Cavalier wouldn't start and they thought it was a fuel pump and came back and it was the starter had died on it. Replaced the starter and haven't had an issue since. Good video!

thanks paul, really appreciate that u spend the time to show all different way on diagnost driveability problem. some ppl just dont realized that you are a great teacher trying to teach all different method of diagnost car, not just one way. really like to see all the high tech when troubleshooting, make diagnostic so much easier. watch all your videos, learn alot from you with picoscope and snap on scann tool. again really appreciate all your effort.

Great vid, we had a 2004 Jeep Cherokee in the shop the other day that a PCM fuse under the hood that appeared to be fine with an LED test light. This was crank no start. After checking fuel pressure and inj control pointed to ASD relay which, showed weak ground from pcm. Directing us to check some fuses. Found a partially(?) blown PCM fuse with enough contact to light an LED test light but showed nothing or a very dim light on one side of the fuse with an incandescent test light. I use these methods because you keep proving them to be useful. Thanks so much!

Thank you. And I wouldn't argue that point but that wouldn't have made for a very good video :-) Also there are some valid procedures in here for the DIYer. What if you didn't have a scan tool? What if the fuses were good? What if you didn't have a wiring diagram and the fuse box wasn't marked? What if you started by checking for spark and stayed on that path, replacing a lot of unnecessary components that had nothing to do with the problem.

I had the same problem with my Cavalier (fuel pump not running even though the relay was working) This is a great to the point video and did give me some good ideas. But my problem turned out to be different and I'm only commenting about it in case it may help someone else.
My fuel pump was not running even though the relay was clicking in and transferring power to the pump. Without going into all the things I tried and tested I'll cut to the chase.
I found the ground wire between the battery and the chassis was bad (The ground to the motor was still good) No chassis ground and most things on the car still worked including the engine cranking and the dashboard, but the fuel pump did not. I hope this helps someone.

Very cool paul on finding the partially broken fuse. I had a similiar problem once with a loose fuse connection myself. I would like to add one detail, paul already knows this, but I don't know if everyone else does, you can read 12 volts on both sides of a fuse and the circuit can be unloaded, then as soon as you have current flow the voltage drops on the other side of the fuse, as shown in the video, this kicked my butt once, so as an extra measure I use my loadpro leads to load the fuse.

I very much enjoyed you video, I can feel the passion you have in doing your work. I would add just one thing, It might have been a good idea to test the amperage draw along that circuit. Overall fantastic diagnostic structure !!!!!!!!! John St John

i have a 1999 Isuzu Trooper or as we call them in australia Holden Jackaroos and they have a feature built into the tech2 where even if the MIL Light isnt lighting due to blown bulb for example the tech2 can actually inform you if that fault condition is indeed set same for airbag light we get alot of people removing bulbs for roadworthy inspection and the tech2 has caught them out every time for ANY GM Vehicle i encourage people to arm themselves with a tech2 :) great tool

as for the low beams that are not working, there is a wiring harness connector that runs underneath the driver side frame rail. you have to take the driver side inner fender apart and remove the washer bottle. you will find the wires broken in this location. if I remember correctly the low beam control wire is blue

Thank you. I used your video to fix my 2002 S10. Your explanation is to the point, logical in the correct order of diagnostic and very useful. My little 2.2 engine only has just 66,000 miles but stuff pops up. Yesterday I got in and started the truck to go to the park with my wife and daughter. The truck ran for a few seconds then just sopped. I noticed the shift indicator didn't eliminate over the PRND21 deal, and the fuel gauge didn't work. I'm no pro, but have one of those diagnostic testers which I hooked up to see no communication. I had no idea what to do at the time, so I searched the sea of forum thoughts which generally lead to land of nowhere. Fortunately I found your video the next day. My problem was simply a blown ECU fuse in the engine compartment. I found it with my electrical tester, put in a fuse and bink! on came the illumination over the P, the fuel gauge went up and she fired right up. Thanks man!

Awesome Greg. Don't forget, that fuse blew for a reason. My suggestion is keep some extras with you in case it happens again and DO NOT put a bigger fuse in as the "fix". A 5 amp higher than normal to get you home in an emergency situation only and if that blows, get it towed.

    • @gregschroeder5828
      @gregschroeder5828 9 років тому

ScannerDanner Premium For sure. Thank you for another sound suggestion. It;'s amazing how glitchy these little trucks are given the low miles. This one was driven by a grandmother for the first 62,000 miles in Arizona were it doesn't see snow and very limited wet conditions. It looks clean and orderly, but still it has goofy stuff that pops up. It is 13 years old I guess, so I understand.

Great video and tutorial on "Logical Step-Through Troubleshooting". Big thumbs up. Im dirt diving a NoStart on a '99 Honda CIVIC Si (has spark, fresh plugs, pump, cap, rotor wires and all with tons of spark. I'll grab some NOIDS and see what I can on the injectors. ("Coughs like an old radial engine that attempts but never catches and cranks) Plugs go sooty black after each attempt The word that comes to mind is VEXING! I'll check out the "Honda No Start" and see if I can glean anything from it. Keep up the great work/videos. BP

I was taught to check fuses first , but it is hardly ever the fuse . there is way more value in looking at the system as a whole that way depending on symptoms you know which way that you want to go that will be the fastest to diagnose . great video

Good point on not jamming the probe in a connector and spreading the pin. I also hate "fuse taps" the type that hooks over the fuse blade and in doing so doubles the size of the fuse blade. I have run into it causing problems after the fuse tap is removed, the fuse won't make a connection from the terminals being spread apart.

I have a 2001 chevy cavalier it isn't an all electric car it has roll up windows no anti-theft system from what I know. My issue is I keep having trac off problems with this car. I tested the throttle position sensor with my multimeter and it wasn't that. I replaced the spark plugs and it wasn't that what do you think it could be ? Also I have two wires dangling from the alternator where do they go and is this affecting my car any ?

ScannerDanner, you give great video... 2004 sufire, similar problem, no spark, no fuel. I was following along and when you got to the engine compartment fuse box, your small fuses (like the PCM) were hot. Mine however do not light a test light. All the large fuses do, just the small fuses are dead. Any ideas? Does passlock shut down both fuel AND spark, I can't seem to find a definitive answer on that? If you happen to answer, thanks...

I should of watched the whole video before commenting. That 10 amp fuse you showed that was discolored. That is exactly what I've seen on fuses that had a fuse tap on them then removed, that terminal ends up being loose and causing a high resistance connection, And you know the result.

The start and run for a few seconds sounds like a typical GM passlock failure.
Unlike older GM's your key does not have a resistor however the lock cylinder has a similar feature when your cylinder is turned with a key it flips a magnetic switch that verifies the cylinder is being turned, IE you are not hotwiring the ignition switch. At the lock cylinder there is a connector three wires Black - Ground, White (sometimes red) 12V (Bulb check) and a Yellow which is 5 volt signal if your signal voltage is bad it means a wiring problem or a bad BCM (BCM controls the antitheft in 01 - up cavaliers, 00- down is the IP) the BCM is located in the Drivers left footwell under the dash However the most common problem with the Passlock cylinders is a bad connection due to corrosion at the lock cylinder connector clean the pins the best you can with electrical contact cleaner your other option is to add a resistor between ground and the yellow 5 v reference wire which bypasses the lock cylinder, you can OHM the cylinder to get the value or you can buy a remote start bypass from a company like DEI for $15, if you replace the lock cylinder (a waste of money) you will have to do a passkey relearn, but thats an issue for another day.

My thoughts here are that no communication with the scanner doesn't definitively point to the ECU not putting out a signal, could be a wiring issue with the DLC. Couple ways to skin a cat.

I've had a lot of vehicle with a no check engine light. I guess this is off the subject and a few years late. Well, I always tell people to check that the Check Engine Light comes on when they turn the key on before they start the car, if no light then don't even bother with starting or buying the vehicle. My latest was with a family member. He bought a car without listening to what I have always stated. He called me saying he bought a car and he loved it and that he took it around town and no light came on. I asked him again did any MIL light display before he started it. No and that the car runs fine. 2 days after his purchase he calls me and says he needs my help. So I pretty much knew what one of the issues I would be dealing with before I got there. I told him that one problem he is dealing with will be a CAT issue and no telling what else. {He also stated over the phone that No Lights still weren't on.} So after getting there, it was the CAT that had actually melted down and plugged the exhaust. With about 1000 other codes that was triggered. Long story short, the local dealer removed the MIL light to cover up the faults that the car had. Scammed into buying a Lemon. Also before I end this, I've also advised my people to also pull the E Brake also once the car is started. Had a car come in where someone rigged the MIL Light to the Brake Light. Sorry for the rambling.

Is your anti theft light on? It could be the ignitition switch. get a wire diagram and a test light. What is the relay in front of the rad for?

Can you let me know if you have another video or can tell me where to start if I turn the key (chevy 2002 cavalier) and it cranks but won’t start and none of the dash lights come on and none of the gauges respond? Would really appreciate anything you could offer-thanks.

If you had a dead computer would that mean that you would have no power on pin 16 as well? just thought that would be a good place to test as well

My 2002 Cavalier is reading 5 volts on all fuses in both fuse boxes (inside and out) but the crank fuse is reading very high. What could that mean? Also, the windshield washer fluid tube when moved sometimes causes all fuses to lose all voltage, including the computer lights and door buzzer stop working. The computer test was done and got 3 volts and 0.0 so computer is no working. Any suggestions????

You have a main battery voltage supply problem. ( severely corroded cable somewhere ) I would look first in the area of the windshield washer tube. If I remember there is a main harness that goes under the frame at that location that is notorious for wiring problems. Usually this just affects the headlights and parking light circuits though. I don't remember this area causing a no start.

hey paul is there a ''rule of thumb'' on coil packs that you could just pull off the boots to check for spark? is it any waste spark system? or is it only GM with a waste spark system? i just bought my son a 2007 3.8 grand prix and the coil packs looked identical to these, and its a GM obviously, i just dont want to ruin anything by being to lazy to attach an inline spark tester but if there is a rule of thumb on which systems you could do this on? thanx
