Ofcourse Mysore is a mystery for the foreigners (mainly Westerners) who can afford all that time and money for the "Mysore pilgrimage". How many Indians do you see there practising Ashtanga yoga? How many authorised and certified Indians do you see as a result? How many KPJAYI workshops have you seen happening in the cities in India?
You know what there is no mystery but there is irony. And the irony is that Ashtanga Yoga although is an "Indian invention" but it's hardly available to us Indians. And that's not because "indians are lazy" (a stupid perception that foreigners come up with while trying to defend why Ashtanga yoga is easily available to the people in the West). But the bigger truth is something else - that Ashtanga yoga has been reduced from a spiritual practice to something which is sold as hot cakes in the market of commercial commodities. Simple

shivin varghese Wow that's interesting to know that Indians do not practice Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga. Is it very expensive to take practice at the shala in relation to the average Indian income? I believe yoga should accessible for everyone. Some studios in the US go by honor/ donation system so no one is turned away to practice.

I agree with you I have been searching for a good class since months and they are sooooo expensive. It feels bad that money is taking away my Passion. Leaving us to just you tube tutorials and risking injuries

I just use UA-cam. I don't have money for yoga classes and I'm a westerner in the west. Hahaha life is life man. It's not different any other part of the world or at any other time in history. Man will treat man the way he perceives life.

Dharma Ram Well I live in Bombay - I'm sure you've heard of this city by the new name Mumbai? Here there's only one resident yoga teacher who teaches ashtanga yoga who charges 9000INR per month. Now if you're a westerner ask this to any middle class indian how much is 9000 Indian rupees for him or her and then we can talk further

Mysore is not mystery. It's become a business capital for self proclaimed "ashtangis" and "yogis" - mainly comprising of Westerners who visit this place KPJAYI for a piece of paper called authorization or certification and then back home they run expensive yoga class and workshops. I'm an Indian and I know that KPJAYI has done absolutely nothing to spread the knowledge of ashtanga yoga in india since the early 1970s when Americans and Europeans started frequenting Mysore and started inviting Pattabhi Jois to their countries for workshops. Mysore isn't a mystery. It's become a monopoly business for KPJAYI and it's followers. Take this truth with a pinch of salt

My local yoga studio charges is £17 a class which is extortionate. So I don’t go even though I love it. It’s far too expensive even in London.

Actually Sharathji is giving scholarship to Indian students and has a time scheduled for them. The price is high due to the high demand. I believe that the Ashtanga Institue should give up the monopoly and go international, allowing certified teachers to give teacher training and certification/authorization. I'm a westernern and cannot afford it. I save year long to spend two weeks with certified teacher. Find a teacher near you that is available by price, time and distance. The practice is YOURS.

Thealune really? So you mean he's doing a favor by this scholarship program to Indians. Let me tell you something - this scholarship program is only for those who've had a minimum of 2-3 months of dedicated practice with a KPJAYI authorised or certified teacher. Now I reside in Bombay and there's only one authorized teacher by the name Suveer Balvi and he charges a bomb ok - which is 9000 Indian rupees which a middle order working class indian like me cannot afford at all. Now so as to have this scholarship which would be applicable from June thru Aug batches I have to spend thousands before by enrolling an class of this authorised teacher. Now what sense does that make? Plus, Sharath Rangaswamy has been making his millions by mainly catering to the western crowd who he charges more at KPJAYI as well as in his international workshops in their respective countries. Even the so called"discounted fee for indians" otherwise at KPJAYI is not a small amount for someone like me. So basically this so called scholarship program at KPJAYI is just a marketing stunt to show people that he's doing some philanthropic shit. If his mission were to serve the society thru teaching ashtanga yoga, he and his grandfather Pattabhi Jois would have first travelled in India to spread awareness on ashtanga yoga than travelling to only select countries where they can throw those currencies expensive than the Indian rupee. Save this lecture on ashtanga yoga for people who don't know much bout it

      Dear friend,
I didn't know that Indians are also required for the 2 months minimum. This is a demand from recent years. I cannot make it too. I don't have a certifies teacher in my country and the teachers to be found more than an hour drive. I did TTC 600 hours with my first teacher who is student of David Swenson and not certified.
Ashtanga Yoga was meant for householders, but having a home, partner and steady job travelling for the whole process of certification might be a price to high to pay not just financially.
I believe that local teachers should charge local price.
Many places are recruiting Yoga teachers. Perhaps You can arrange practinioners in Your area, find a space suitable for Shala and invite a teacher to start an Ashtanga community.
On facebook there is an excellent group called Ashtanga home practitioner network, You will find much advice and support there.

I disagree on what is written above. . We can know for sure when we find truth. But of course this is not the truth of scientists, philosofers, etc Its the real and only truth mentioned by yogis and other spiritual masters.
