Should I practice reading in concert pitch for B.B. trumpet? Reason I ask is I downloaded a sheet of master scales a year ago that said B.B. trumpet, but was written in concert pitch. Your video just made it apparent, that I should have been transposing the notes to match concert pitch. Thanks for your instruction 🎺
Great question! Whether you’re interested in playing jazz, classical, rock, gospel or etc....a great skill to know and understand is transposing FROM Concert pitch TO trumpet in Bb because most times musicians will speak in concert pitch in regards to notes, chord changes and the key of a song. Yes, I recommend practicing reading in concert pitch at least. Very important skill.
Hi Aaron! Thank you so much for the video, so easy to play along and learn them 2 by 2, super helpful! I picked the trumpet last month with the objective of learning how to play by ear, playing the songs I already love singing mostly without using any fingering until the note became difficult to reach, then randomly clicking the buttons till the note sounded as clean as possible. Interestingly this is the exact fingering I was using to play almost any song! One big question tho... I'm sitting next to my piano and noticed your Bb sounds like a Gb? Then on your C major scale video the C sounds like a Bb?!?! What is happening, what am I missing?! Keep up the good content
Playing by ear is the best thing you could do for your trumpet playing. So props to you! To answer your question about why all of the notes I’m describing sound different… A standard trumpet is in Bb meaning that all of the WRITTEN PITCHES for trumpet SOUND a MAJOR SECOND DOWN. @@TheBlackTrumpeter woohoo amazing! Thank you so much for the answer!! I knew it was a transposing instrument, but now I finally understand what that actually means! Seems kinda tough to learn.. if I knew any notes hehe :) I'd love to ask for another piece of advice on how I could continue this trumpet journey. Right now I can play every melody I want with the mouth piece alone, as if I was whistling, my dream!! I'm actually scared that if I learn the scales I'd start focusing more on which buttons/scale to press instead of which note I want to sing with the trumpet. Any advice on what my next learning goals should be? Thanks again for the help! Looking forward to the next podcast
The good thing about fingering on the trumpet is that it only has 8 possible valve combinations to learn. By learning your major scales and the chromatic scale, this will give you the freedom to play any melody you want with confidence because each note only has one good way of playing it. On any brass instrument it’s actually possible to play any note with any fingering if you’re determined enough. But playing the trumpet this way makes it difficult to play notes with consistency and assurance that they will sound as intended. By using the right fingering for each note it will give you a higher chance of note accuracy. The next step for you, will be to learn the chromatic scale and all 12 major scales and arpeggios in one octave so you can quickly learn any song in any key by ear. After that, you will want to access more songs by increasing your technique and endurance by then learning your scales and arpeggios in 2 octaves…giving you a range of at least an F# below the staff and C above the staff.
Because we play a B-flat trumpet which is a transposing instrument. The tuner and piano are considered to be in C (concert pitch). The trumpet and other Bb instruments sound a major second higher than concert pitch...I know this may seem a little confusing at first.
This one was a little tough because of the notes requiring 1-3 and 2-3. My D wasn't quite in tune with yours because I don't use the third slide. That's something I can't do. It was never taught to me so I don't use the slides. I only fix the tuning slide if needed. Second and third stay closed all the time. 🙂
I don’t know where to start. I decided to buy a new trumpet for some reason, forgetting that I literally haven’t played since the 8th grade. I’m 42. That being said I remember the c-scale and I still can get some good notes out, but I’m basically starting from scratch. Any suggestions?

This is Ab though ?!
I am 4 years late but just in case anyone else was wondering. Technically yes, it's Ab if you're reading it in bass clef. If you tune it with a guitar, the guitars "Ab" would be the trumpets "Bb". The trumpet is a tone under the bass clefs "Bb", For a tuba player the trumpets "Bb" is the same as an "Ab" scale, so if it's easy for you to picture it as "Ab" then go for it👍🏻.
👏👏👏
Its difficult
Rachel Muller the scale is difficult? How can I help?

I don’t know how to play trumpet
Start with the playlist of videos. I teach you how to make a sound ua-cam.com/play/PLTP2ukv7Mzz9V7IMohfAuPmVlMRbms_aw.html
Don't slur. Tongue the notes.
Anthony Perez you’re welcome to play scales anyway you’d like 🙂 i slur them to make sure that I’m using my air efficiently first. Then i add the tongue later once i get the sound that i want (well-supported and centered).
Why do you call yourself " The Black Trumpeter"? Do you want people to see/think of the color of your skin everytime they see you? That does nothing for the African-American Community when were trying to get beyond race.
Are you implying you are the ONLY Black trumpet player. I dont get it? What is that name saying to the public
What about "The Asian Trumpeter" or "The White Trumpeter" How does that sound to you now?
Aaron dude stfu and just watch the video
CRITICAL GAMER1M 😂 Thank you.
I think its meant to be an clever portmanteau of the card game "Black Peter" and "Trumpeter"
Thanks
You’re welcome
