Interesting fact nobody ever seems to mention, the Devils have never been swept in a playoff series in their history. The have always won at least 1 game.
If you want to be technical, they did get swept when they were the Colorado Rockies, by Philadelphia, losing both games in a best 2 out of 3 preliminary round series. Keep in mind in those days, a team that won 19 games all year could make the playoffs, so they were still a terrible team, but a playoff team. That was when Barry Beck was a pre-Devils Devil,
That great Scott defence duo was maybe best i've ever seen in NHL. Both had just the right attributes to compliment each other. And of course Brodeur in the net was just perfect.
Hope The devs fanbase finally start seeing something similar to this era again. We seen them "building" 3 times now and I just want to make it to the post season.
In addition to Burnette (loved that move) they just hired Ryan McGill as assistant coach today (7/29/22) as well to work with the Defense and PK! He had success for the past 5 years with Vegas working with their defensemen I think he was also a great addition by the Devils!
Isles fan. I know that pain. On the plus side, you have a number one and two center, you have a number one dman in Hamilton. Ty Smith looks good. The Zacha deal was a good move as was signing Palat and upgrading the net situation.
Everyone complains about having the neutral zone trap and having heavy defense in front. But after our defense left brodeur still flourished with even better numbers. Eat your heart out Hasek and Roy fans
I was def hoping for Johnny like most others, but honestly I think we may have a dodged a bullet. The team is small and weak enough. Palat is a 10/10 signing.
Coming back to this video a year later is great. We saw one of the best seasons in recent history for any team making a rebound. Devils went from a bottom of the barrel team last season to making it 3rd overall for playoff berths. Sad that we got our butts handed to us by Carolina but nothing beats beating the Rangers in a SO victory to secure the 2nd Round and seeing Jack Hughes break the franchise record for points!
As a Devils fan, I would say the fact that Kirk Muller is still 4th all time in scoring for this franchise highlights how many forwards the Devils have either whiffed on in the draft or lost to free agency/bad trades over the last 35 years.
I would argue it highlights just how defensive the team was from 95-2012. WE had good offence in many of those years too, but they were from players who came and went and didn't stick around like Patty or Zajac.
I think what happened in that series was not so much the Bernier hit, but it was all the emotion that left our bodies after finally beating the Rangers in the Conference Final in the most spectacular way possible. It was as satisfying a series victory as the franchise ever had besides the 3 Cup Final victories. When Games 1 and 2 were at home, you could feel that the emotion and the passion was not fully there and they did not gain that back until late in the series. I felt it as a fan. Had the Bernier penalty not happened, Game 6 would have still been a tough one to get in LA, but had they won Game 6; I don't think the Cup was leaving NJ in game 7.
To be honest, I never thought the Devils were really in that series. They did lose the first 3, if I remember correctly. Close games, but LA was just a better team. the Devils did good just to win 2.
My family got season tickets in '87, they made the playoffs that year in OT of the last game of the year on a John MacLean goal. They Cinderella'd to the Wales Conference Finals, not that it mattered. That was peak oilers anyway. The thing is that multiple rules were changed based on how this team dominated with the trap (See Nedermayer's stats). They changed the rules because Lamoriello had built a systemic factory and had Brodeur of course and Stevens was basically a concussion machine (Kariya, Lindros).
The time period from their first to their last cup had only 4 different cup winners. They shared it with detroit and colorado with dallas the only other team allowed to win in that time period in 99 of course
The Adrian Foster pick was an all-timer by Lou. I remember when they selected him, hardly anyone knew who he was and Central Scouting had very little on him. Lou had that Belichick like time where "they know what nobody else does." Turns out, everyone was right. Luckily, it was not that deep of a draft and certainly not the biggest miss in NJD draft history, but definitely a draft pick for the ages when even the experts are wondering who is this guy?
The early Devils were so bad that Gretzky used to call them a Mickey Mouse organization and would often mock them using his gloved hands to make mouse ears. When I was in college me and a friend watched a rare Devils televised game on WOR out of NY. They lost to the Oilers 13-4.
Very early Devils memory-when they first moved to NJ, their broadcast TV games were picked up by WOR-TV in the NY area, but WOR already had the Islanders, Rangers, Knicks, Nets & Mets, so not too much space on their schedule for the Devils, so they'd have maybe 8 or 9 games all year (Islanders & Rangers had maybe 20 each). So if you wanted to follow the Devils, it was mostly radio. Their announcers were Larry Hirsch, who wasn't bad, but maybe too much of a booster for what was a terrible team, and, as color guy, Fred Shero! Imagine Shero as a color guy on radio. He never said anything, LOL. He was the opposite of most guys, who never shut up. He wouldn't add his color commentary unless Hirsch asked him a question. I did actually listen to the famous Mickey Mouse game on the radio. Even Hirsch couldn't make that one sound good.
You can't. The official Hat Hat was a special fundraiser limited edition. Unless they bring it back to public sale it is only secondary market at exorbitant prices.
I was at the Rock the day before the debuted this trash. I said " Can't wait to lose tomorrow in a brand new joke jersey". And you know what? That is exactly what they did.
One of my favorite hockey stats is that in their second year, the Scouts won only 1 (one!) of their last 44 games. They won one single game between New Year's and the end of the year. They were winless in their last 27 games of the season. That's how bad they were.
@@yoholmes273 I would say Elias was a much better player than a lot of guys in the HOF. I think Daniel Alfredsson got in the hall this year. I would take Elias over Alfredsson any day of the week.
The Devils just need some size and sandpaper up front. The goalies are a concern. I like Akira down the road. On defense? Severson is traded this year...as well as #24 what a waste Ty has been. Graves gets resigned. Next year the D core will be solid with the new kids coming up. I just want to see Foote bring his game to the NHL level. His skating is just so AA.

Let’s Go Devils!
That Kings Devils SCF could have gone either way if one of the two games that went to OT at the Rock was won by the Devils
Ahhh recalling the good old days of 1995-2005 and then realizing that was 20 +/- years ago! 😭😭😭 please turn the corner this year!

Good times are coming

This team added brunette as an assisting coach. Hopefully he brings what he had in Florida to this team. Have a feeling he will take over ruff's job

In that 2012 Game 6 if Bernier didn’t get that 4 minute major penalty good chance we would’ve taken Game 6 and 7 and won a 4th Cup!

It's funny that the best remembered thing from that playoff run was Don Koharski & the donuts.

Outside of a brief run by Cory Schneider, no real goaltending since Martin Brodeur retired
Schneider was incredible before the injuries wrecked him. He made those Devils teams a lot better than they should've been.
everyone thinks that they are the sister team too the New York rangers but the rangers have not won anything thing since 94
