- Confession: in my previous video about the StarSense Explorer ( • Will this $2 Mirror RE... ) I had not actually used it - but I knew it was going to be impactful.
A lot of observing, unfortunately, involves fighting with equipment. Last night was no exception (we should have known. When my friend Scott and I get together, it seems we always have extra problems).
Last night after searching for Comet Overhype for a couple of hours with a 12-inch dobsonian with no luck, (It took Scott about an hour with his Nexstar 8 and even then he had to manually sweep for it), I spur-of-the-moment said "hey, even though it is always a bad idea to try new equipment out in the dark, let's give the StarSense a shot."
I had the app on my phone and it was activated - I had not explored the app at all.
In less than five minutes, the photons of Comet Overhype were concentrated on my right retina!
I knew this technology would be a game changer, but we were blown away.
Thanks, Scott. It wound up being a really fun night of "observing".
Starsense is awesome. Completely reignited my love for astronomy because I can see so much each night in my light polluted yard.
It is SO simple. No wires, just your phone.
I finally broke down and ordered a Starsense 80az... and 3D printed an adapter to mount the dock in any Synta-standard dovetail shoe. That way once it gets here I can mount the dock on my dobsonians in place of a finder. Instant $200 digital setting circles. Then I also have a little refractor on the side.
It doesn't look like they have one for my 102, but I have duct tape... Let us know how it works out!
My home sky is bright (I'm a few miles north of downtown San DIego, right off the interstate. That bright sky plus a near-full moon targeting a patch of sky without any bright stars was actually a pretty harsh test of the system. Add in that it was my first time using the app and the first time taking the scope outside. Amazing!
1:20 Hobbes yells hello!
Setting circles are your friend.
digital, I assume. I'm thinking Starsense is my mistress. I get the goods without a lot of maintenance and fuss.
