You can read more about the deck (along with non-budget and ultra-budget builds) here: www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/budget-magic-98-57-tix-thunderous-wizards-modern
MTGGoldfish awesome deck ive been tinkering with the adeliz prowess thing since dominaria came out, never thought of the thunderous wrath route. Very nice :)
Tyler Peacock he has a non budget version in the link. Im thinking of throwing in some mutagenic growths for prowess and maybe a couple crash through or temur battle rages. There are so many possibilities for this deck. Also im throwing in a playset of snapcaster mages for even more value
For budget you should brew a Pauper version of this deck with brainstorms fixing our Thunderous Wraths and other good prowess creatures like Elusive Spellfist and Jhessian Thief
SmugLookingBarrel I thought the same exact thing..I played u/rd prowess before git probe got the axe. It is so good. Plus, I play u/rd pauper now, so I'm partial to m growth..lol
The new editor moves too fast sometimes. 36:15 is a good example of that. You play Sage, you talk about the cards you saw and sorted, but we don't see what they were. We're missing relevant information there.
Yeah. This has been fairly frequent lately. Usually when it happens it skipz the last word/part of a word so for the most part I can understand what is said, but it's still been happening too much
Not to mention the popping and crackling. Seth, if you can read this, I'd recommend setting back up the Blue Yeti and using it with Voice meeter. There are settings to make your Yeti sound miles better than it does without VM.
But at the same time, in G3 of Round 1, he had the same clock if he had 2 bolts (opponent would have been at 9 the turn SO cast Thundering Wrath with two stormchasers out- 5+2+2=9). The real blowout was his opp trying to +3/-3 a prowess creature with 3 toughness IN COMBAT - charlie brown levels of punt, there.
wasn't paying full attention, unsure what format this was at first from the video, so many standard cards also stormchaser would've tipped me off if i'd been playing any real standard recently, but magic duels servers aren't down yet so i'm still playing a lot of that
at 25:30 shouldn't the strangleroot have come back to the battle field since soul scar mage causes your wizard lightning to place -1/-1 counters instead of dealing damage. Thus removing the +1/+1 counter and triggering undying again?
Shouldn't wizards lightning plus soulscar mage put -1-1 counters on the strangleroot geist and that removes it's +1+1 counter triggering undying again? @ 25:25
Wooow seth, that was a thing of beauty...with a better mana base you would have probably went 5/0, sadly that basic island in the last game sealed your fate...and as you said, snapcaster mage would be a bomb in this deck...maybe mutagenic growth instead of thunderous wrath and this could actually compete in a competitive league...i would gladly see a stream with the non-budget version of this piece of art
thanks for putting all of the game start times in the copy! super helpful for people with less time to watch :) it would be super helpful next time if you mention what deck you were playing against, so folks can know at a glance which games they're most interested in! thank you!
Yoooo, this deck is so sweet! Especially for a budget deck! I hope you keep tweaking this, and post the new list. Maybe even a non budget version, for funsies?
I'm guessing it's b/c it's budget, and a playset of mutagenic growth is $4-$8 and if you can only have one or the other you'd rather have the playset of bolts.
Wouldn't monastery swiftspear be better than Ghitu Lavarunner? I know it's not a Wizard, but I would think unconditional Haste and Prowess would outweigh creature type
Maybe theres something I'm just not seeing, but why wouldn't you run Wizards Retort in your sideboard counter slot? At least in place of the disdainful strokes if not the negate
As someone who’s played a lot of games with variations of this deck in standard and modern, I don’t like ghitu lava runner in the deck. By the time he becomes a 2/2 with haste, you almost always have better plays. I like a turn one siren stormtamer or curse catcher much more, because a lot of games it feels like you’re just pumping up one creature and can save your big nasty from a push or path. Really like the thunderous idea though! Cool little piece with deck all the deck fixing. Also, for those of you who are interested in the deck for standard, enigma drake is an all star in it. Where you play a turn or 2 slower than the modern version, popping out a 6/4 flyer for 3 cmc on turn 5 usually puts up a fight against Lyra
At 25:21 I was cringing thinking that the soul scar mage would cause the strangleroot to come back. Interesting to see that didn't happen. Is there a reason for that?
Hello! Thank you for the fun video! I have decided to build a version of this budget deck as my first modern deck and i really want to make use of Dreadhorde Arcanist. Getting to cast all those cantrips and Lightning Bolts again for free from the graveyard seems really fun and powerful to me. The question that I have is: What cards should i cut?
Wouldn't monastery swiftspear be better than the ghitu lavamancer? It feels like it's dealing would be way higher. I get the feeling it is budget constraints, because otherwise I don't see the reason for the lavarunner over swiftspear
Somethingi been wondering, is the gray line with the stats of the deck from the game endless legend? it looks really familiar, also that the deck i been working on my budget modern, didnt knew about that blue wizard scry 4.
At around 25:33 shouldn't that strangleroot geist have come back? Since it hits the yard without +1/+1 counters? As far as I remember -1/-1 negates +1/+1
pete123 counter cancelling happens as part of checking state based actions, but in the order state based actions are checked, the creature would die before the counters cancel therefore it doesn't undie.
pete123 persist explain it better 6/7/2013: If a creature with persist that has +1/+1 counters on it receives enough -1/-1 counters to cause it to be destroyed by lethal damage or put into its owner's graveyard for having 0 or less toughness, persist won't trigger and the card won't return to the battlefield. That's because persist checks the creature's existence just before it leaves the battlefield, and it still has all those counters on it at that point.
Any reason to play Burst Lightning over Thunderous Wrath? Burst Lightning's normally castable 2 damage for R, or kicked 5 damage for 4R, versus Thunderous Wrath's normal cast of 5 damage for 4RR, and the restrictive miracle case for 5 damage for R. You could then drop the Sage of Epityr and run a Delver or something instead.
Hi guys! Now with the Guilds of Ravnica reprints, the shocklands are going to be way more affordable. Do you think it is worth to swap those for the Shivan Reef even if I don't have fetches for the moment?
Hey Seth I built a deck based on this exact theme but its called 8 bolt or 9 volt battery it uses also delver to fly control plus a little expedia cards also I run only 17 lands plus two are the new ixalan strip mine also it has a couple fetchs with some white black splash using fatal push path to exile also some silence plus wizards retort to be modern legal counterspell plus some stubrn denials also a few side spells desgin around control and using agro draw I was think of making less mana heavy by adding mox opals mox ambers and if drawing out niv mizzet curiosity combo with laboratory maniac also some other turn 3 turn 4 auto kill
I would like to mode it more for more speed and maybe more this was one of my first drafts of this deck but there are so many different things one can do with more colors too so I'm still not sure how strong it would be to have a rainbow control aggro wizard tribal overkill by adding the few other cards I was mentioning plus maybe a more try turn one win with a semi affinity side theme with a mix of karn also o was thinking of building a rainbow karn with the color artifact lands with darksteel cidel plus other artifacts that have etbs for artifacts and makes creatures get bigger for each artifacts plus some control affinity creatures for 2 instead of 6 or 8 plus also mimics with 0 mana creatures and tons of moxes with only one mana control like push bolt path and mostly in trying to build a deck that if modern legal also would be both tier 1 modern and legacy vintage deck also a nickname it woukd be called modern day legacy a deck legal in both competitions and be viable so even new kids to legacy who never seen most of the cards can be able to beat power nine and never playing a single one of them which if did would become the deck of decks and shall never be play for it would make anyone hate magic but not at the same time for its nickname of the deck could be I hate magic ☺ just to be a like a meme theme deck were even a turn 0 deck would win I would just switch in control till I got what I want but still play a game of chance for any top deck card can be gg so it's like a joke in itself
Enditoren 6/7/2013: If a creature with persist that has +1/+1 counters on it receives enough -1/-1 counters to cause it to be destroyed by lethal damage or put into its owner's graveyard for having 0 or less toughness, persist won't trigger and the card won't return to the battlefield. There's a non-budget list in the article! www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/budget-magic-98-57-tix-thunderous-wizards-modern (I does include Snapcaster, apart from improving the mana it's the best upgrade you can make).
what would a non-budget version of this look like? can you make a video just for me to see what it would look like? I have almost all the expensive lands and stuff on paper and the deck looks like fun
Michael Helton you're not casting many spells with colorless in their cost except raw thunderous and a couple chart a course. Doesn't do much when most spells are a single blue or red only
BTW super nice. now I can upgrade my Standard Wizards into Modern Wizards every Tuesday for Modern Tournaments. Also, I always wanted to play Thunderous Wrath, it was just lying around in my collection
Seth I think you're overselling this list. Going toe to toe with some of the best decks in the format. The deck was crushed by hollow one, and performed okay vs eldrazi tron. You beat a couple of rogue decks with some good draws. The deck needs snapcasters, mutagenic growths and thunderous wrath and some one drops trimming. Then I would be happy to see it fair against some tier one decks again. But in it's current state, it's fnm playable :)
There are so many creatures in this deck that Delver flipping would be to low. Sure Delver is powerful but Sage is going to be much more consistent value.
Outlaew that's true the creature count is high. Maybe Siren Stormtamer or . It's a solid 1drop that would help. Spellweaver Eternal looks fun for 2 drop also
yeah you miracle it earlier in the game or whatever then you blood water it and draw it next turn as a miracle again... also the prowess and flying are good
You can read more about the deck (along with non-budget and ultra-budget builds) here: www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/budget-magic-98-57-tix-thunderous-wizards-modern
MTGGoldfish awesome deck ive been tinkering with the adeliz prowess thing since dominaria came out, never thought of the thunderous wrath route. Very nice :)
Please, Please, please do a non budget video of this deck. Having snapcaster in here would be absurd... Please?
Tyler Peacock he has a non budget version in the link. Im thinking of throwing in some mutagenic growths for prowess and maybe a couple crash through or temur battle rages. There are so many possibilities for this deck. Also im throwing in a playset of snapcaster mages for even more value
For budget you should brew a Pauper version of this deck with brainstorms fixing our Thunderous Wraths and other good prowess creatures like Elusive Spellfist and Jhessian Thief
I made a non budget with manamorphose mutagenic growth and snapcaster mage havent tested yet but i think its going to be powerful
I feel like this deck wants Mutagenic Growth for the zero mana prowess and +2/+2
SmugLookingBarrel
Or even manamorphose
With 8 cantrips and 4 manamorfoses you can play with 18 lands
Augusto Rio good point, but it’s budget magic?
Yes, yes
But o was wondering about the upgraded version
I liked this deck, and manamorfoses and snapcastermage are both great for this deck
might as well just make it a kiln fiend deck at that point
SmugLookingBarrel I thought the same exact thing..I played u/rd prowess before git probe got the axe. It is so good. Plus, I play u/rd pauper now, so I'm partial to m growth..lol
The new editor moves too fast sometimes. 36:15 is a good example of that. You play Sage, you talk about the cards you saw and sorted, but we don't see what they were. We're missing relevant information there.
Thanks for pointing it out. I'll make a note of it!
Yeah. This has been fairly frequent lately. Usually when it happens it skipz the last word/part of a word so for the most part I can understand what is said, but it's still been happening too much
izzet staticaster would be a good addition to the sideboard. It is a wizard and it has some cool interactions with soul-scar mage
wafflecopter208 yeah, I feel that card would be necessary for this build. He needs to have a reliable way to handle tokens
Yeah, Staticaster seems like a good addition.
It's the Eternal Masters deck you always wanted to draft!
Something is wonky with the sound on this one D:
Is there a limiter or compressor that makes the sound levels jump so much?
Ya sounds muffled every few seconds or so
Not to mention the popping and crackling.
Seth, if you can read this, I'd recommend setting back up the Blue Yeti and using it with Voice meeter.
There are settings to make your Yeti sound miles better than it does without VM.
Thanks for the feedback!
wiz lightning as anti chalice tech is hilarious
But at the same time, in G3 of Round 1, he had the same clock if he had 2 bolts (opponent would have been at 9 the turn SO cast Thundering Wrath with two stormchasers out- 5+2+2=9). The real blowout was his opp trying to +3/-3 a prowess creature with 3 toughness IN COMBAT - charlie brown levels of punt, there.
CultOfTheSystem to be fair, Seth had only 1 mana open and they had a chalice x1 out
Anchupom chalice on 1 didn't matter on this math :) even countered spells trigger prowess
100 percent of games won by 6 mana Thunderous Wrath!
Niffum. Ill say 90%
There was at least one won by a miracle'd Wrath, but it's hilariously close.
Remember the Blast of Genius deck?
Thank you for the base line. Updating to 2023 and going to swing with it!
That feeling when you just bought the stuff for Flaming Wizard Burn so now I can build this for much less. Thanks Seth!
Yeah, a lot of the Standard Wizard deck will help you build this one. I should have pointed this out!
wasn't paying full attention, unsure what format this was at first from the video, so many standard cards
also stormchaser would've tipped me off if i'd been playing any real standard recently, but magic duels servers aren't down yet so i'm still playing a lot of that
26:40 that voice crack though
Omg yes
42:40 Hollow One can have 16 power on turn two, but I can't have SFM? That seems reasonable.
Jeff? Is that you?
What's SFM?
Stoneforge Mystic
Sadly no, I'm not Jeff Hoogland, but I really want my Death and Taxes deck to be competitive again.
Skywarp2099 relax, now that the JtMS test was passed, I'm sure next modern ban update it will be unbanned
at 25:30 shouldn't the strangleroot have come back to the battle field since soul scar mage causes your wizard lightning to place -1/-1 counters instead of dealing damage. Thus removing the +1/+1 counter and triggering undying again?
8:09
thanks!
Really enjoying the playstyle dynamic Sage creates with his ETB!
Yeah, Snapcaster seems like a big upgrade. Maybe we'll try it for a stream.
Thunderous Wrath is one of my favorites. I thought of something similar to this deck with all the new wizard support, but this looks even better😁.
thanks for putting all of the game start times in the copy! super helpful for people with less time to watch :) it would be super helpful next time if you mention what deck you were playing against, so folks can know at a glance which games they're most interested in! thank you!
That's an interesting idea, I'll see about doing it in the future.
Love this! Well played Seth
Yoooo, this deck is so sweet! Especially for a budget deck! I hope you keep tweaking this, and post the new list. Maybe even a non budget version, for funsies?
Could we see a non budget version?
Description > See article > Scroll down.
We might play it for the stream www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/budget-magic-98-57-tix-thunderous-wizards-modern
MTGGoldfish Seth! You need to play the non budget version on stream too. It looks so good.
never plays the non-budget versions of budget decks
Tom Jackal Its literally up on the replay page. Guess you were wrong.
why in the world is mutagenic growth not not in this deck?
Less damage than Bolt, I guess. It's also not super cheap for the budget.
I'd say because it's budget magic.
not when it comes to prowess creatures
mutagenic growth is probably less expensive than lightning bolt tho fwiw....
I'm guessing it's b/c it's budget, and a playset of mutagenic growth is $4-$8 and if you can only have one or the other you'd rather have the playset of bolts.
I wish I could like this video twice. Super sweet deck!!
Thanks!
Stormchaser Seth...
Stormzndrsplt.
the editor skipped over the sage trigger? why? thats important to the video.
Luv this deck. Have half deck but not enough cash to the other half. Will definitely be saving to get this deck.

Also, for those of you who are interested in the deck for standard, enigma drake is an all star in it. Where you play a turn or 2 slower than the modern version, popping out a 6/4 flyer for 3 cmc on turn 5 usually puts up a fight against Lyra
Austin Blankenship but Lyra has first strike?
should have included *with warlord's fury, also unsummon is very important
You could play the non-budget version on a stream. It looks AWESOME and might 5-0 a league if the budget version did so well
dude... i love his voice so much, it's like a most reassuring thing on the world lol
Hella slow probably but potential for riverwise augur or jace to brainstorm thunderous back on top?
Are there any new cards from guilds of ravnica that would be a good fit in this deck?
I'm gonna build this sweet deck but what would be the first cards taken out for upgrades
At 25:21 I was cringing thinking that the soul scar mage would cause the strangleroot to come back. Interesting to see that didn't happen. Is there a reason for that?
Strangleroot Geist cares about +1/+1 counters.
What are good bounce spells for the SB? It seems Leyline of Sanctity would be devastating for this deck as this deck has a large burn aspect to it.
Do you think Nimble Obstructionist would have a home in this deck? Maybe in the side board.
I would probably cut a couple of Sages and maybe a Thunderous Wrath or two (just because it's too expensive to flashback with Arcanist).
Awesome deck Seth
Wouldn't monastery swiftspear be better than the ghitu lavamancer? It feels like it's dealing would be way higher. I get the feeling it is budget constraints, because otherwise I don't see the reason for the lavarunner over swiftspear
Could this be a Voidmage Prodigy deck? Maybe from the SB against some specific matchups?
Somethingi been wondering, is the gray line with the stats of the deck from the game endless legend? it looks really familiar, also that the deck i been working on my budget modern, didnt knew about that blue wizard scry 4.
At around 25:33 shouldn't that strangleroot geist have come back? Since it hits the yard without +1/+1 counters? As far as I remember -1/-1 negates +1/+1

That's because persist checks the creature's existence just before it leaves the battlefield, and it still has all those counters on it at that point.
Needed a Pyroclasm effect in the board.
Also probably don't need Sage or Wrath. Might be better off with more Aggression?
Amazing deck
Everytime you got to turn 6 with thunderous blast in hand for the lethal I could hear ACDC's Thunderstruck playing in my head
14:30 2 thought-knots on turn 3
Any reason to play Burst Lightning over Thunderous Wrath? Burst Lightning's normally castable 2 damage for R, or kicked 5 damage for 4R, versus Thunderous Wrath's normal cast of 5 damage for 4RR, and the restrictive miracle case for 5 damage for R. You could then drop the Sage of Epityr and run a Delver or something instead.
Burst Lightning is a good cards, five for one mana is a lot though.
I'm so building this in paper, awesome deck dude
23:52 Lol, Stormtamer,
Adding white not only adds lightning helix but boros reckoner and reflector mage. As f or upgrades you didn't mention Grim Lavamancer or baby jace.
Woooah seems suuuper spicy! Never seen this card used b4 outside of casual haha
Would anyone consider switching Sage of Epityr with Delver of Secrets?
Hi guys! Now with the Guilds of Ravnica reprints, the shocklands are going to be way more affordable. Do you think it is worth to swap those for the Shivan Reef even if I don't have fetches for the moment?
Yes cause of sulfur falls triggers for untapped :)
Every time I see Hollow One I'm like, "Oh yeah, somehow that still isn't banned".
It's not always as insane as it looked in that match, still very strong though.
Let’s just remember that Seth killed more people this video with thunderous wrath that I’ve scene the card in actual legit decks...
Why not noxious revival to combo with wrath?

Spicy!
Shouldnt soul-scar mage remove the counters from the strangleroot and then it would come back by its own? What am i missing?
Enditoren

Great deck! I also think there are some great non-budget upgrades you can include, like Snapcaster Mage
There's a non-budget list in the article! www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/budget-magic-98-57-tix-thunderous-wizards-modern (I does include Snapcaster, apart from improving the mana it's the best upgrade you can make).
As someone who's played some Izzet prowess filled goodness in Modern, yeah I can agree that it can be a beating.
Games - 8:10
Should people start playing declaration in stone again hollowed one?
That is a good answer to get rid of bunch of them.
Wouldn't monastery swiftspear be better than lavarunner?
JarHeAd anifoogam budget option
What are the chances of getting the non buget wizards video? Or maybe a legacy version?
There's a pretty good chance we play the non-budget build on stream at the very least.
8:09 for gameplay
I love this deck!
what would a non-budget version of this look like? can you make a video just for me to see what it would look like? I have almost all the expensive lands and stuff on paper and the deck looks like fun
I might try this with Temporal Mastery.
Standard Wizard prowess can be Just as explosive as thunderous wizards?
No baral or goblin electromancer?
Michael Helton you're not casting many spells with colorless in their cost except raw thunderous and a couple chart a course. Doesn't do much when most spells are a single blue or red only
Or you know.... DELVER OF SECRETS!
Check the creature count 20+ creatures is to many to play delver. Delver feels bad if you aren't playing at least 45% of your deck being flips
Ronald Salazar Delver is only a Wizard on its front side...
Most of our spells are one mana so Electromancer and Baral don't really do all that much for us, plus they don't have very aggressive bodies.
Loved the Wizard's Lightning with only on untapped land in the face of the Chalice of the Void.
I like the deck, hoping for a modern knight deck with Dominaria cards as well
First Game at 8:10
why are all of the tolkens 2/2's
seth continuing his roll of winning with jank burn spells in modern!!!!
Noxious revival some loot affect trigger miracle?
Putting Thunderous Blast back on top of the deck seems fun.
I agree with mutangenic growth also like temur battle rage
I feel like a thunderous wrath in the opening hand is the best for the sheer fact if you do flood out you at least have something to play late game
Looks cool!
Why not delver of Secrets?
Delver is weird in the deck. The biggest problem is that once it flips it isn't a Wizard anymore and when it's not flipped it fairly underpowered.
42:45 As Garfield intended
Super nice!
Why not Flame slash instead of roast in sideboard?
AntiheroFOREVER roast can take care of angler, smasher and tassigur
Yeah, five damage is actually pretty helpful against certain creatures in the format.
42:20 that ridiculousness :D
BTW super nice. now I can upgrade my Standard Wizards into Modern Wizards every Tuesday for Modern Tournaments.
Also, I always wanted to play Thunderous Wrath, it was just lying around in my collection
Hollow One living the dream.
Needs mutagenic, staticaster, and needed to side in roast against mono green to deal with the x/4's and 5's
Remember that spectral is actual a cmc 6 so stroke can hit it also. Obscure rule be it is relevant.
This is Budget Magic series
I love this deck
I think sage was insane.
At least 2 maches was almost muligan hand with a Sage, and finishes on "I topdeck what I want"
Noxious revival and mutagenic growth would be great for this deck
Upgrade version for the stream
Sounds like a good plan.
flame of keld seems like a good addition !
It's a little weird with all of the cantrips since we're not as empty-handed as some decks, but it could be sweet.
I built a deck similar to this, but with less creatures. Wee Dragonauts and Mutagenic Growth is pretty brutal.
Maybe instead of Sage at 1 maybe delver yah its not a wizard after a flip but still a good card
There are so many creatures in this deck that Delver flipping would be to low. Sure Delver is powerful but Sage is going to be much more consistent value.
Outlaew that's true the creature count is high. Maybe Siren Stormtamer or . It's a solid 1drop that would help. Spellweaver Eternal looks fun for 2 drop also
Yeah, I'm playing this deck in Standard and Siren Stormtamer is awesome. So key for protecting Adeliz.
I’m not correcting but I always pronounce her name, add-ILL-ez (am I wrong?)
blood water entity from hour of devastation for the miracle spell, i know its not a wizard but you could miracle each turn
alexpoobum miracle is only the first card your draw each turn
Sir, you're EVIL
Jake Townend it wouldn’t matter. It puts the card on top of your library. Just make sure you use
alexpoobum unfortunately, it’s just a 1 time use. I honestly think noxious revival would be the better card here.
yeah you miracle it earlier in the game or whatever then you blood water it and draw it next turn as a miracle again... also the prowess and flying are good
Why no Wizard's Retort?
John Seigo it's basically a burn deck, wizards retort slows it down and doesn't really help the deck at all
John Seigo the better question is: why no wizard’s retort in the sideboard?
Double blue is actually tricky for our budget manabase.
New from Nabisco, it's eldrazi Tron nuts! You're pain is delicious!
