      I always found it baffling too. I fall within LGBTQ myself and have been subjected to a fair bit of hate because of it when I was younger. I never truly understood why? I could quote some fairly academic theories about it, but on an emotional level it still doesn’t make sense to me. And it’s depressing that it still keeps happening so many years later. That’s why I wanted to make sure that it’s clear where I stand with this 🏳️‍🌈

    Your tape players probably just need belts, that is quite common on older units. You're pretty handy, I imagine you could fix it yourself. This makes me think I should check to see if mine still work... I haven't used them in years.
    I actually have a working vacuum tube powered wire recorder, I REALLY need to make some recordings with that!!

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  6 місяців тому

      Well, some of them do, others just mysteriously stopped producing sound although everything else seems to work. I’ll fix them eventually. That wire recorder sounds really cool. I use Hainbach’s emulation of a wire recorder a lot in my music!

      Thanks Wolfgang! I’m so glad you enjoyed the video! The David Harvey course is super interesting. It’s especially useful because he’s been teaching Marx for decades by now and knows what students struggle with the most in the text. He puts it in the context of our own stage of capitalism too, so it’s also an interesting interpretation of our situation now. I found it very helpful to get through the denser chapters. Definitely an eye opener even if you don’t agree with his conclusions.

    The extent you go to in order to remove quality from your production is awe-inspiring.
    I enjoyed Kapital when I read it in Uni. Been meaning to return to it. Yes, life would be impossible if we submitted to analysis paralysis regarding ethics. But it’s good to be aware.

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  9 місяців тому +1

      😅 Well, I also half speeded it by re-recording it to tape, so it wasn't just a way to remove quality. I added distortion, saturation, pitch shifting and hiss in one single step. With VCV rack I often find that it sounds a tad too clean at times and quite digital, especially when I use clouds. Tape fixes this quite nicely. Of course I don't use it on all elements, just one is usually enough to take that overly clinical sound out of it.
      Kapital is fascinating imho. I don't necessarily agree with everything he says in it, but the analysis is definitely interesting. And I definitely agree, awareness is very important.

    • @2NZday
      @2NZday 9 місяців тому +1

      I’ve wanted to put VCV on my Raspberry Pi (if it’s compatible) just because I want to know what everyone’s talking about. A virtual mod synth? What an odd idea. I just picked up a cheap oscillator though, and I think VCV could help guide me through what kinds of connections are available.
      I hope I haven’t misread Marx. I never thought of him as an ideologue. For me, he just reads like an economist as shocked by the industrial production model as Dickens or Blake, with a regard for the humanity of those whose labour is commodified. I don’t really see the controversy in it. Yet, it’s 2024 and the notion that labourers are human is somehow radical.

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  9 місяців тому +1

      @@2NZday That doesn't really sound like it would be compatible, but it would be cool if it worked. VCV rack actually needs quite a lot of resources, my old laptop was struggling with my bigger patches, so I wouldn't think a Pi would have the horse power. VCV is definitely worth checking out though. If you're on iOS you can try out miRack, it's the same code base I believe.
      I agree with you, I don't see the controversy in that notion either. But well, the comments section on this video actually shows that it's not as bad as we think. I kinda expected the comments on this to turn full on crazy, but so far there hasn't been any backlash from showing Capital. Interesting indeed! I mean, I've done it in a fairly hidden way at the end of the video but still? I think before the pandemic talking about Marx like this would have turned out quite differently. People are much more open to anti-capitalist ideas, now that they've seen its ugly side in action. (Or well, maybe that's just wishful thinking on my side, could also be.)

    I have all the free libraries from Spitfire and have had a blast with them, tons of fantastic and interesting sounds. This one looks fun too! I wasn't aware of controversy around Spitfire, but I have to realize that I can't live my life checking the politics of every company whose products I use. Plus... I haven't paid a dime to them since I have only used the free libraries.

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  9 місяців тому +2

      Their free libraries are really cool too, I use some of them as well occasionally. I don't think I would have noticed the controversy either if I hadn't been watching Red Means Recording for years already. Love his content, so fun! Spitfire somehow managed to prevent it from making too much of a splash which is kind of disturbing in its own right. We definitely can't be aware of everything that's going on because companies try to brush it all under the carpet. Researching that part of the video was quite depressing actually, every single one of those screenshots was an immediate WTF is wrong with those people? And usually it involved businesses so universal that it's next to impossible to avoid their products.

  • @MathHammer
    @MathHammer 9 місяців тому

    I am aware of the ills of late stage, unfettered capitalism and associated greed, but I don't think Henderson's hurtful language has anything to do with it. Such hurtful language is the product of lack of empathy, rigid thinking, fear, and an inability to form a mental model containing concepts that a person can't explain and/or understand.

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  9 місяців тому +1

      You're probably right, but I do believe that there is definitely a correlation between the having what it takes to make money and lack of empathy for example. If the people committing the crimes of late stage capitalism had any empathy they wouldn't price hike drugs that people need to survive by 500%, fund death squads to do their dirty work, test potentially lethal drugs on children in India etc. And the worst part is: We can't avoid buying products from those kinds of people and their companies because we're talking about huge corporations with monopolies on drugs or that have such a large market share that half the food industry uses their products. Hurtful language isn't quite at the same level, so if I can't boycott Nestle and Monsanto because they maneauvred themselves into a position where their products are unavoidable I don't see the point in boycotting Spitfire either. I honestly don't think ethical choices are possible for consumers within a capitalist system.
