  • Marcus Garvey was Jamaica's first national hero. Born in Jamaica in 1887, he was a passionate Black nationalist and Pan-Africanist.
In 1914, he established the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) with the goal of promoting Black nationalism by celebrating African history and culture. Garvey fervently advocated for the "back to Africa" movement and took a significant step in this direction by founding the Black Star Line, a Black-owned passenger line designed to transport individuals between Africa and other destinations.
Additionally, he played a pivotal role in nurturing restaurants and shopping centres to empower Black economic self-sufficiency.
