  • Back Story: "Don't Care Where The Railroad Runs"
Co-written & sung by Jack Blair & Pat Richardson
The life of a road musician is tough on relationships.
Late one evening in the early 70s two Tulsa, OK singer/songwriters, Jack Blair and Pat Richardson, were working through recent broken romances, likely over the inspiration of a Cognac or two. "Might as well break out the axes and put it to song" says one to the other. And so it began, the birth of a song. Pat, with his 12 string guitar and Jack with his bass, quickly agreed on a rhythm and chord structure then set about prying out the lyrics to the piece. Over the next few days and weeks one would advance a word or phrase and the other would argue vehemently against it. A counter word or phrase would be suggested, argument ensued, then finally concession if not total agreement. In a few weeks the music and lyrics were done to the satisfaction of both. Time to punch record.
Pat set up a consumer type 4 channel, analog recorder on a table in his living room, borrowed, he thinks, from Bob Long's Guitar House in Tulsa, and after a quick run through hit record. With Jack Blair on lead vocal and bass and Pat on 12 string guitar and vocal harmony this song is the result.
A note about the photos of the train stations near the end of the piece: As the songs lyrics progressed Jack was thinking of the Santa Fe station in Perry, Oklahoma (the first picture) and Pat was recalling The Washington Lane station in Philadelphia (the second picture).
Jack Blair, a native of Hutchison, Kansas, played with the popular Smokehouse Band in Tulsa. He died a number of years ago in an auto accident. Pat teamed with Rob Bishline, now of Bishline Banjos of Tulsa, to form Pat 'N Rob, a fun and talented folksinging duo. Pat lives with his wife Pati in the Tulsa area.
