@@glpinho I agree. This album was their pinnacle in hindsight. The best when it comes to creativity and bandmembers. Mustis and Vortex added something special and unique. Yes for me The Insight and the Catharsis is also their best song, maybe only Mourning Palace comes close.

This album is an absolute masterpiece from beginning to end. Great musicianship, production, feeling and lyrics. Not many albums measure up to this level.
Pretty much the same with me; even the time I got introduced to BM through Dimmu and Emperor in the early 2000's To this day, SBD holds a special place in my heart
Masterpiece!!! Arcane Lifeforce Mysteria is what got me started with this band and ALL extreme metal. I heard it on a late night radio show one night and it blew my mind! The damn DJ never told us who it was (I cursed him repeatedly)!!!! I kept searching all my metal resources until I FINALLY found this CD. I've never looked back.
SBD is the most unique album in Dimmu's catalogue and I can never get enough of its ludicrously menacing and hellishly insane soundscapes. It shifts priorities in terms of composition and gives the keyboard - with Mustis as its new conductor - a more powerful presence, plastering the album's sonic palette with sprawlingly romantic piano melodies and bombastically harsh and dark organ pieces. Just listen to the crazily violent organ explosions in the ending of _Behind the Curtains of Night-Phantasmagoria_ , the seductive opening piano melodies of _Dreamside Dominions_ , the impacting opening of _United in Unhallowed Grace_ , the imperial intro of _The Promised Future Aeons_ , the schizophrenic eruption of wrath at 28:15 in _The Blazing Monoliths of Defiance_ or the explosion of infinite torment at 41:06 in _Grotesquery Conceiled (Within Measureless Magic)_ . In conjunction with the accelerated pace of the music in comparison to older material, it just creates a more potent mix of cataclysmic proportions. The riffs are faster, meaner and more twisted and it all just hits harder with an unending ferocity of a caged beast as Shagrath's frenzied outbursts of maniacal rage shriek over the viciously bombarding sound. Vortex's hymnic clean vocals provide the perfectly added regal tone. With all these elements combined in such a fashion, SBD sounds cosmic, majestic and satanic, all at the same time. An absolute masterpiece.
Absolutely yes. I remember how they got quite some hate for the more majestic/cosmic sound back than. It took me some time to enjoy the album in full, but they were just WAY ahead of their time. Its so full of details it took me years to get it all. Today I see it as their pinnacle as artist and musicians and listen to it regularly. Foremost because of the insane keyboards Mustis added. I mean its bombastic but he clearly tried to keep it down to classic piano and organ sounds, very unlike many others. I know Nagash did the Bass Guitar here, but the added vocals of Vortex are truly unique. I mean "The Insight and the Catharsis" is HIS song. His part in it was the highlight of every concert and still gives me the shivers and tears to my eyes. Its a shame both had to go due to petty things like money (if that all is true). They never recovered from that, till today.
I don't see anything on discogs about this album ever being remastered or remixed but this upload definitely sounds different from Spotify or the individual tracks from the official UA-cam Music auto-upload. It sounds clearer, less bassy and more trebly and I think you can hear the orchestral instruments more.
The chemistry of this line-up was one of the kind with Peter behind producers desk.. they never repeated it by songwriting, what they did on SBD. With Tjodlav behind kit music breathe, no harsh feelings towards Barker (he is an alien behind the drums)
Barker was good behind the drums and they did awesome songs with him, but the one member who gave a distinctive edge to SBD was Astennu. Check out Carpe Tenebrum's second album and you will see what I mean. He almost influenced PEM as well, but he blew the bridges with the band and his input was diluted (check the early version of Blessings... as proof).
Hands down the best album they ever made. So tired of everyone always praising Puritanical when this one is miles above in terms of atmosphere and aggression.

Masterpiece!!!🤘🏻
THEIR BEST ALBUM...
I bought this album on my 12th birthday back in 2001 and still love it today!
This, Nexus Polaris and Sham Mirrors from Arcturus on repeat for me for the past few weeks. Amazing album this.
I would include Quintessence from Borknagar too.
@@containternet9290 thanks! are there similar works from other artists that you know of, the one you suggested is pretty solid
@@ghostinshell100 Graveworm and Hecate Enthroned also put out great records in the late 90s.
I can't help but mention Limbonic Art too, but their use of drum machine really annoys me.
@@containternet9290 Thanks I will check these out!
Brutal grinding Magnificence!
Ordered it on Cd this afernoon.
Pone Diabolus Custodiam!
Veni Omnipotenz aeternae Diabolus !
Agios O Sathanas!
Esto era Dimmu Borgir! Amo esta obra muestra! Del Black Metal!
Dreamside Dominions was the first track from DB I ever listened to. It was back in 1999. I had to buy this Iconic album asap.
Dreamside Dominions is such a powerful song, they should remaster this album and get some more low end to the game, sounds very very thin (well BM is supposed to sound cold iguess...)
Great album
My favourite DB album
Awesome sh*t
This is some EPIC SHIT!!! I get lost in this whenever i play it. Every. Damn. Time. HAIL!!!!
Such underrated album, Hail Dimmu Borgir!
Obra prima da banda, melhor álbum, espirituoso e majestoso.
Perfect mix of atmospheric, powerful and groovy
Still my favorite Dimmu album since the early 2000s.
The insight and the Catharsis is just so epic that song
