In the still, dark night the poet Walter John De La Mare heard a knock at his door. In this poem, his "small door" Symbolizes the small artificial world we are all locked in. So, the nature itself came to rescue us. When he opened the door, he didn't see anyone but could feel the touch of the naure in the small things like- tap-tapping of the beetle in the wall, screech-owl's call and whistling of cricket. So, I think the nature's spirit came knocking at the poet's small door.

I think the one who knocked is none other than god of poetry 'Muse' who encouraged the poet to write poetry. And where you are knocking is not a house, the poet has explained the small mind inside the body.This is my personal opinion.
