It really is cool whenever mods like these are so easy I took the 3/8 gearbox out of a Kobalt impact and slapped it into the XTR 1/4 impact housing. They are the exact same dimensions for swapping the 3/8 into the 1/4 tool, but if you want to swap the 1/4 gearbox into the 3/8 tool, there's some grinding you gotta do I like the higher RPM and IPM of the XTR driver for removing bolts
Technically yea but if you got big 1/2” sockets the adapter slack is going to eat up your final torque output. That’s why I got the 1/2” for big bolts that need all the power I can throw at it. I use a 3/8” adapter most of the time with smaller sockets.
Whats crazy is you lose a pretty good chunk of torque going through adaptors and the 3/8 still performed way better than the 1/2". Torque test channel showed about 27% loss with 3/8 -> 1/2"(although on a much higher power impact). If you were using 3/8 impact sockets with no adapter you might be able to comfortably remove 300 fl/lb

honestly kind of fascinating. I dont really need a 3/8th inch impact, but it would be nice to have for some of the smaller tasks I dont feel like doing by hand. and an 850 adapted would be about 100$ cad cheaper than the 923.
i did this conversion tonight, what a bugger that inner C-clip was the clip to undo old part 1/4" anvil and the 3speed switch has a little flat metal tension spring retainer for plastic slide button be careful not to lose it and remember to put it back in after disassembly..mine fell out when i opened and had to figure out where it belongs. lol..all good now and up and running with a 3/8" anvil..all in all 158AU for tool and 28Au delivered "aliexpress" for anvil N646882 2 weeks to Australia..tools used a T10 torx bit,couple flat head screwdrivers for c-clip disassembly and little pick or fine knife to lift stickers 3 of them top,bottom and near 3speed switch..
Nice work! Yeah I could do a follow up with a bit more detail on the conversion, it sounds like you learned all the same hard lessons I did, haha. In fact, the 1/2" is missing that metal piece on the switch and so basically the switch doesn't "click" into each setting anymore, it slides without much resistance.
@@PhillyFixed Thank's..Mate without going into too much detail on c-clip i stabbed myself in palm with small wiha screwdriver hehehe "self inflicted" i dont have circlip pliers small enough so it was the hard way as always ..that 3 speed metal piece i left out at first not intentionally but after assembly there was a piece left over, "you know that DOHH moment" and had to unzip unit again "no big deal"..don't know if i will ever reverse process as there is a lot of parts to reverse process in that 1/4" setup..Thank you for your video did indeed help me to be confident to tackle this project..
looks like the 1/2" lag numbers are mixed up in the last chart. That would've put the 3/8" impact even farther away from the other two, which I believe would've tied with the correct numbers. Other than that pretty good content as always.
Very interesting results! That certainly does hit pretty hard for an impact driver, the Hart impact driver can do 100lb-ft lug nuts but it takes a while...
the 1/2 took longer because the hammer is hitting a bigger mass. Drill out the center of the squar like on the Bosch which have integrated 1/4 hex inside
Yolo I’m doing it DCF850 with the 3/8 anvil mod. I got the bigger DCF921 1/2 anvil and it’s cool but I have been working in really tight areas and it doesn’t quite fit so I had to use a hand ratchet. I couldn’t use my electric ratchet since I needed more torque. If I had one of these it would have been super easy.
I still say, the compactness of the 850 is awesome, and would be EVEN BETTER, If they made a 12v version! That with maybe 12v Powerstack? Or even just the 5ah, would be awesome.
Hey Jim, the problem ins DeWalts quality control is so lax, that you really need to do this test on the EXACT same impact driver, as I purchased 2 850s at the same time and they are vastly different in speed of task.
Well, he _did_ have to make modifications to the tool for the 1/2"anvil to work, but I guess you could just swap the metal endcaps along with the anvils.
Yes I also found this to be true. The grease they use from factory isn’t good. It’s supposed to be a little abrasive and help seat components together. After a while the grease wears out, so it’s a good idea to wipe it off and add quality grease. Don’t worry about getting all the old grease out, it will eventually all get replaced by the new grease. I personally grease all my tools every 3 months and they work great.
@@TheTurbomopar I take it apart and put a thin coating of fresh grease over each of the parts. If you just use a needle greaser it might not get to the very back of the gearbox. I recommend Valvoline Moly Full Synthetic NLGI 2.
Hey u should try to see if your able to swap the membrane buttons from the dcf923 onto the dcf850!!! It looks like there's enough space allowed for it...also love the 3/8th drive onto the 850!!! It's my go to now for when working on my truck
Came across an old nicad battery brushed DW051 12 volt 3/8 impact at my local habitat ReStore turns out that is an acceptable anvil to do this mod as well
I don''t think is makes a lot of sense as a 1/2" unless you only have 1/2" sockets. As a 3/8's I like it for it's compact size. However I gave up on Yellow and black tools after being let down too many times. The red ones are just better
yeah I feel like if you need 1/2" sockets, you are probably doing something that requires more torque/break away torque than the 850 can handle, and would probably just be better off with the 921. for 3/8th inch though this seems like a good idea

I did it a couple days ago and it's the best tool in my entire toolbox. I have a dcf921 1/2 compact and having that extra inch of space really makes a difference. TTC did tests on all of these and this little 3/8 is 70% of the power my 1/2 has while being an inch shorter. What an incredible machine.
@@markm0000 I had a spot that I couldn't get my ½" mid compact in and then that's when I started doing research on the most compact impact. I came across this in my process, and like you, this is my go to impact everytime. I even used it to remove and fasten 24mm lug nuts on my tractor yesterday when fixing a hydraulic line. It should, in theory, do the opposite. The more mass there is out at the edges of the anvil, the more centrifugal force you get. But a lighter anvil is easier to spin. So you want to balance overall weight with mass on the dogs, basically.
I am interested to know how this compares to a DCF923b. What are the differences? I don't mind building this if it is going to be better for me than buying a DCF923b.

I'm not sure about a 1/4" anvil... DeWalt actually doesn't make a 1/4" impact wrench that I'm aware of, so you'd have to find one from another manufacturer that fits. Makita and Milwaukee have 1/4" models, for example.
Sorry, I should have said there's no 20V 1/4" impact wrench. The 12V Mac is basically just the Xtreme impact driver, and the nose housing on that is much, much smaller than on the 850. You could give it a shot, but I doubt it would fit.
You should not be using adapters when trying to get accurate measurements for a impact, the looseness of the adapter causes some of the impacts to not get full hammer power. Just a thought...

I didn't do an instructional vid, but for the 3/8" you only have to take the impact apart and replace the collet with the new anvil. Very simple! I think Man Caver Tools did something similar except with a Bosch "freak" style anvil and did a vid on disassembly.
@@l00nybin For someone like me that is working all the time in very cramped equipment, I absolutely need something smaller than the 923. This 850 with the 3/8 anvil is about the size of my fist with a ratchet. I could never break loose something torqued at 212 ftlbs with only one arm and a few inches to spare. This is a massive time saver and I'm barely scratching the surface on where to use it.
Super cool. I did this to a Kobalt XTR awhile back and submitted it to TTC. Hope to see them do an episode on such things. ⅜ seems to do much better on smaller "wrenches". I also find it to be more versatile than ½ below 400-500ft/lbs. Great video as usual, Jim.
Awesome video Jim, I bought the 840 and was so happy with it I ended up swapping out/replacing the 1/4 collet for a 1/2 in hog ring anvil on my lightly used 887. Just my opinion but I feel like it actually has more effective impacts with the 1/2 anvil than original configuration and I also just needed a light to light mid torque wrench and my 887 was out of the starting lineup, I was pleasantly surprised how well it performs. Thinking maybe 3/8 anvil comparison might be insightful 🤔
I haven't researched what 1/4" anvils are available - off the top of my head I can't think of a DeWalt 1/4" impact wrench on the market. But, at that size you're probably better off just using a socket adapter, you're not going to get much out of an anvil that small without breaking something.

That's an interesting thought, but looking at the head housing I don't even think you could get an anvil in there from any impact wrench model...

Their DCF923B has a ton more power at a very reasonable $140 bare tool (if you look in the right place), and it is not much bigger.

Super cool. I did this to a Kobalt XTR awhile back and submitted it to TTC. Hope to see them do an episode on such things. ⅜ seems to do much better on smaller "wrenches". I also find it to be more versatile than ½ below 400-500ft/lbs. Great video as usual, Jim.

Awesome video Jim, I bought the 840 and was so happy with it I ended up swapping out/replacing the 1/4 collet for a 1/2 in hog ring anvil on my lightly used 887. Just my opinion but I feel like it actually has more effective impacts with the 1/2 anvil than original configuration and I also just needed a light to light mid torque wrench and my 887 was out of the starting lineup, I was pleasantly surprised how well it performs. Thinking maybe 3/8 anvil comparison might be insightful 🤔
I was getting ready to try this on a 1/4" anvil would you recommend this? Or is it possible?
I haven't researched what 1/4" anvils are available - off the top of my head I can't think of a DeWalt 1/4" impact wrench on the market. But, at that size you're probably better off just using a socket adapter, you're not going to get much out of an anvil that small without breaking something.
@@PhillyFixed I wanted to use it for light applications like the makita 1/4” impact. I didn’t know dewalt didn’t make one. I just ordered one anvil for the Milwaukee which I’ve heard people are doing swap with. Is it likely to fit the dewalt?
