2 versions of the treaty existed. "The Treaty of Waitangi" and "Te Tiriti O Waitangi". Article 1 of the English version said the Maori would cede Sovereignty to the Crown. The Maori Version of Article 1 said that Maori would grant the crown Governorship (NOT SOVEREIGNTY) which is what Maori were signing. But of course, the English Version had more recognition -.-
Māori never ceded sovereignty, over 500 Māori only signed Te Tiriti which states tino rangatiratanga (sovereignty) is to remain with hapū. Only 39 signed The Treaty because Te Tiriti was not present AND were led to believe it stated exactly what Te Tiriti said (as they only spoke Māori). In international law contra preferedum also states Te Tiriti is in fact the authoritative text.
