  • From its beginning in 1987, the Sacramento light rail network has grown to over 53 stations, spanning 43 miles (69 kilometres). This animated video takes you through the timeline of when new stations were opened, forming the SacRT light rail network that we know today.

The Green line is supposed to go all the way to SMF airport. One short fall of Sacramento RT is there is the huge area between the I-80 and US-50 corridors with no service at all. All those people just keep driving cars.

I know what you mean lived in Carmichael. I went to school downtown I had to walk half mile to the bus to get watt/i80, if they want to fix traffic in Carmichael Citrus Heights they need to extend the blue line north.

yeah thats because its all shitty suburbs like Arden, carmichael and citrus heights who probably wont ever get expanded sac RT anyway because theyre full of suburban NIMBYs which is a shame, because there's just as many people who would like to have it, but the NIMBYs have all the power...

    I love Sac RT...
I really want them to expand a line through to midtown, maybe even over tower bridge to west Sacramento and the baseball stadium... as well as send the green line to the airport through natomas like they've been wanting to do for years.. Theres a ton of potential for RT so long as the city really commits to it...

Neat to see a video about SAC RT
Here's some additional Fun Facts about the system:
*The RT light rail is technically more of tram system (as it has street running in downtown), but "light rail" was the popular term of the 80's so that's what it's called.
*The tracks between Marconi/Arcade and Roseville Road stations travel on a overpass originally built for a realignment of the Business 80 Highway (SR51/ Elvas Freeway) that was canceled just as the planning for the light rail project began.

Is the rest of the Central Valley contemplating on building their own separate light rail and/or BRT system to supplement both Sacramento AND BART systems for Stockton, Manteca/Tracy & Modesto residents? Maybe Merced?
Simply given the jobs in the Bay Area but said area is still too expensive for even a lot of good paying jobs, but not bad to Central Valley standards? Oh, and worsening freeway congestion?

IMO the Capitol Corridor isn't a good enough connection in general, especially with it being fraught with issues regarding Union Pacific. I know funding will probably never happen, but an express route between Sacramento Valley Station and Walnut Creek via the delta would provide a fast and reliable connection more fitting for the volume of people going between the regions.

incredible history. I didn't know that the Blue Line (the line folks use to get to Consumnes pre-CRC station) was started in 2003. I can see the practicality of the Blue Line, which was helpful for folks in South Sacramento to commute to the city or to I-80. But the 2015 CRC line was the biggest deal for everyone (heck even CRC folks were happy about it)

it is a good place for a capital
a nicely historic proud city with a slower, more relaxed, older, vibe to it, it combines some elements of the northern and southern states cultural heritage.
in addition, the city is one where government would not interfere with the cities other functions, meaning it is not too expensive, both in land price, for the administrative offices, and in terms of providing a reasonably competitive standard of living for lower level government employees... it is reasonably well connected, yet, was dominated by the kinds of land where one can expand new sports and other infrastructure (thus benefiting from it's capital status).

It can go up to a speed of 65-70 mph, but it is not allowed to. San Francisco's Light Rail travel speed is slower than compared to Sacramento's Light Rail at its average speed of only 10 mph mainly of its system.

Sacramento is the Ottawa of California. Sacramento's economy is overwhelmingly just the government and the nearby universities of CSU Sacramento and UC Davis. Sacramento is otherwise a boring town with a small, short skyline, because with no corporations, demand for high rise offices is very limited.
Don't forget California's politics, with a Democratic supermajority in both houses of the legislature and a Democratic governor, is ideologically more similar to Canada's federal government than America's federal government. Even Republicans in California are more moderate than Republicans in the rest of America.

I think it's a scenic enough place depending on the area, but we don't really have a lot going on, so we're more a satellite of the SF bay area. There are parts of the areas in the City of Sacramento that is not being counted like Parkway, Lemon Hill, Florin, Arden-Arcade, Rosemont, La Riviera and part of Natomas Area neighborhoods. If those parts of the areas were counted, the city itself is at nearly 600k. The entire Greater Sacramento Area is near or at 2.5 million.
