this boy is given the most famous aria and absolutely flies with it... this kind of talent is priceless, well done Joe you were born to sing and the world will one day acknowledge your unique beautiful, voice and the really special person it lives within!
How can this wonderfully talented young man sing like this. He is stunning and should be snapped up by someone who recognises what a surperb talent Joe is. What a stunning performance by someone so young and virtually inexperienced. I am gobsmacked.
Actually, I was pretty impressed with this young man. They did lower it a half step and he nailed that high Bb with power, and yes a popish sound... but wow - this kid has the potential to be amazing...
Simply stunning. I never in my life thought that I would be hearing Joe sing this, what a mistake I made. The world needs to hear him. Simon, your loss.
There are a handful of self-righteous classically-trained singers that seem to plague the comments sections for this show. They seem to be missing the point in the show. It's all a bit of fun. NONE of the vocalists that come on 'Popstar' believe for a second that they're toe-to-toe with the best Opera singers in the business - they're here for charity, or self-development, or dare I say... fun? As a broad 'pop' singer myself, I can hear that Joe doesn't have the power to nail this like Pavarotti after 4 weeks. He obviously has some talent, and is a good POP singer. It's light entertainment. Instead of moaning and groaning about Joe's vocal shortcomings - maybe go record your own version of this and upload it... and await the critique from those who 'know better'?
I don't see how people can say Joe is awful at singing this aria! No way is he Pavarotti, but he is hardly "absolutely terrible and a disgrace". I understand fully that he isn't perfect, I'm bit disputing that. But for about a month's (at time of this was aired on TV) worth of vocal training in opera, when he is a pop singer, is quite the compliment if Rolando Villazon and Katherine Jenkins think he has enough potential to perform such a huge and popular aria. So, if anyone else has anything negative to say - do consider 1) his age; 2) where his career began initially; and 3) how long he has actually been singing opera for.
Joe sings this so well, he ought to sing it in the Royal Variety Show. Even so he achieved already loads, something always seems to undermine his complete success. He deserves better. What a star. Anybody who agrees with me, please say so.
I'm not sure why people here seem to think this performance is so good. It really wasn't To his credit he stayed in tune but what he delivered was a song not an aria.
BEING A LANZA AND PAVORATI FAN I KNOW WHERE YOUR COMING FROM BUT HE'S A KID AND I GIVE HIM ALL THE CREDIT IN THE WORL FOR ATTEMPTING NESSUN DORMA. IT BEATS LISTONING TO ALL THE OTHER JUNK YOU HEAR TODAY.
As for the person who mentioned David Phelps(?) - now that is butchering an aria. Sounds so poppy! At least Joe kept it as it was supposed to be, an aria!
I loved him and his performance as for me it's a combination of pop voice with opera songs that work well in his case, because he is extremly likable with captivating voice and smile. It is somethink simlar to il Divo's performances(pop & opera) or another pop-opera Italian very talented group IL VOLO - three young boys with pop and opera voices performing both kind of songs. It is a new trend and is cool...
I've just watched Rolando Villazon performing Hoffman in tales of Hoffman and I'm certain the he wouldn't cast him anywhere. Joe would need lots and lots of training and even then IMHO he could only do chorus stuff
I like his voice in general. This show is fun! I love opera and it's great to see pop stars crossing over to opera.... totally different vocal demands. It would be interesting to see it the other way around! Most opera singers are awful at singing pop!
I think he really got the potential if he wanna be a classical / opera singer, he just need to find a good teacher and thats all. He has a great voice, he feels the music, he sings really easy considering he is not an opera singer, etc
Jenkins has no right to judge this. She is not an Opera singer. There is a reason she doesn't perform at La Scala or the Royal Opera House. Every time she sings she uses a microphone. Real opera singers do not. How dare she call herself an opera 'stat'.
sei meravigliosa noi ti amiamo Joe Mcelderry, Possano tutti tuoi sogni . One day when you are singing this again on the world stage ,the angels will stop, look down and listen.
When I hear this sung well I feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand up - Joe did that. Now that Simon (BIG mistake Simon) appears not to want him, maybe he should look to opera! Good looking, great personality and an amazing voice. Well done Joe.
This is absolutely terrible and a disgrace to those of us who are actually trained as classical singers. Nessun Dorma is a piece that most classical tenors should not be singing throughout their careers, let alone some kid with minimal training who would not be heard at all without the microphone.
You may have trained as a classical singer but who has heard of you? Joe at least can reach out to the majority who can enjoy the music and his voice without wondering too much, and worrying about , registers and diaphragms and vibrato and timbre and breath control and all the technicalities of voice production. It is so sad that someone like yourself who is claiming to be trained can't appreciate fully the abilities of someone who has a natural gift. Envy and bitterness are known to be rampant in the classical world of orchestras and singers. You would appear to have just proven it to be true. Very sad. he keeps in tune, hit the notes and thats a lot more than most of us can do and a lot of people would listen to him singing opera rather than go to a theatre to watch one. And yes I do like Opera and yes I do go them and no I am not blinded to other avenues of expression. And no I can't see him at the Met or La Scala or Covent Garden....but then again I wouldn't expect to see a 20 year old classically trained singer taking a lead there either. He is still a boy and needs to fully develop....and at least he has the range and quality to do it. give a bit of credit where it is due rather than just slag him off
David Michael Beaton Your ignorance and naivety towards what it takes to be a classical musician are part of the problem. And if you think I am envious of this you are sadly mistaken. I chose to pursue the most difficult and demanding form of singing because I wanted to challenge myself to excel at the highest art form in the world of voice. Maybe if he trained for 10 years he would have the voice to sing this piece, but to think that anyone who has a "natural" gift can sing Nessun Dorma after a couple months of work is ludicrous. If you knew anything about classical music, as you claim, you would realize that someone who is just starting out singing classically should be singing basic art songs from various composers to better understand and develop his own voice with proper teacher, not just Villazon, who functions as a vocal coach as opposed to a technical teacher. Have you ever spoken to a trained tenor? He would tell you that most people should never sing this piece before they are 40, let alone 20. Again, I am not criticizing the kid for wanting to branch out and try classical music, I am saying that this show is going about it all wrong, and if they are trying to bring opera back further into the mainstream, having actual opera singers with proper training compete as opposed to these people, would be a much more appropriate avenue.
I really do wish you would read the post before commenting on it. I do not claim anywhere that I know a great deal about classical music. I am not particularly interested in all the dynamics and simply enjoy the output. You state in your response that you are not criticising the kid ..which is precisely what you are doing by saying he shouldn't even be attempting to sing something that you clearly believe belongs purely to those with years of training. You feel it is disgraceful and terrible to you and people like you who have got training. I hardly think that Joe has deliberately gone out of his way to be insulting to anyone though you clearly feel insulted by him. You have your opinion. I have mine. You feel it is disgraceful to the classical world to have some young man to even attempt to sing a song you see clearly as something lying within your own particular sphere of interest. You feel I am ignorant and naive simply because I stated you were slagging someone off for doing his best and I felt you were being unfair? My own opinion, now fortified by your response is that you are so full of your own opinion and beliefs you have disappeared far up your own butthole and you'll probably never see the daylight again. Enjoy the no doubt tailored acoustics of your classically trained voice in the rectum/colon you're inhabiting
Alex, I agree with you 100%, though this video doesn't bother me that much. I'll tell you what bothers me, look up "David Phelps, Nessun Dorma" (there's a number of them). He does a pop-version of the aria and his fans are claiming it's the best version ever and his vocal abilities are beyond any opera singer. Check it out.

The guy has no intention of being an opera singer! It's a bit of fun! Katherine Jenkins would have served her voice well to keep studying!

Rolando nos hace falta un programa de ese tipo en Mexico, seria muy interesante

but Il Volo & Il Divo version are better than this
Maybe he should try singing countertenor and try singing Che Faro senza Euridice
He's good. I wished he held the notes longer though
katherine jenkins.. opera............. keep practicing
it's more difficult sing like tenor in 4weeks than soprano in 4 weeks!
♥
