I was just ordering my big Berkey with 2 extra filters and a stainless steel spigot when I suddenly remembered watching these videos and seeing a discount code offered at the end. I'm new to ordering things online but it was as simple as typing in TIDBITS and suddenly around 30 bucks was simply taken off the total charge to my card! 30 bucks is 30 bucks, and I'll take it! Awesome, thanks so much😃
Are the negative videos coming out because the EPA are trying to regulate gravity fed water filters, saying they are pesticides. Berky are suing them. Something doesn’t add up about the timing of the negative videos coming out. We've had ours for years, my husband is a Physicist & Engineer and understands filtration systems as part of his job. Our water comes out perfect. Thanks for this HONEST review.
Yes there are people actually in the comments saying they got sick from a Berkey filter and explaining how they used it saying they primed the pump 20 times what pump and calling them Berkley and even bringing up that the government banned them and are making a better one for us haha they are hitting us from all directions it's crazy
I'm curious about this too since I was just made aware of the controversy and that the EPA has issued a stop sell order on the Berkey filters. Have you done your own water test? We full-time RV and have used a Berkey for 5 years... But feel like I need to do more research now...
I have a Berkey and was becoming frustrated with the negative reviews. I have several Berkeys, boat, house and farm, and have always found comfort from water safety they provide. I filter bottled spring water at home to remove micro plastic and have the heavy chemical filters on my boat Berkey. Thanks for your content and look forward to following along.
This has to be the most thorough and comprehensive analysis to test a water filtration product i have seen. Anyone who is considering buying a water filer; or purification device or a system should mirror the effort that this family has! solid work TIDBITS, Solid!

@@borat9108 yes they have not been forthcoming regarding their tests results. I have been looking into this as I have been using a Berkey for several years. I have some serious concerns now with Berkey. You definitely have to do your own research and not trust everything a company tells you.
@@MRSHEARTLESS24 Yes, really. Apparently this kind of thing is fairly common in the water filter industry. Berkey really made us think they were different. Go with reverse osmosis and just add minerals back. I have a Berkey and regret it now. This lady’s test isn’t even a good test of Berkey because her water was already filtered before the Berkey filtered it.
Thank you for sharing your test results. I have been using a Berkey for years while RVing amd in my home. I recently heard that Berkey was a scam but now I am convinced it works like I think it does. It doesn’t filter out calcium n magnesium. Our well isn’t even that bad but it does not take out hard water so I have to wonder if it really would take out important stuff.
Lucky you to have high Lithium. Bet everybody in your house is super relaxed. Plus it greatly helps your body process B12 to get it into your brain. I use my Berkey on city water with the Florida filter. I finally decided on it because I wanted something that is transportable. Which worked out perfectly when I moved 4 years ago. I find if I drink water out of the Berkey, it's tasteless and flat. So sometimes I'll add some Redmond salt to give it a sweet flavor. My grandmother had a spring fed pond that was 45F year round. That water had incredible taste as it filtered up though limestone. It was so cool and delicious that as kids we would just run to the edge of the pond and put our faces in the water to get a drink. Millions of gallons flow through that pond daily so we never were concerned about contimants. My family offered the water to a bottling company, but the calcium was so high it would ruin their equipment. I'd have thought calcium water would be a huge marketing advantage. Lol.

@@ZX9RinHollywood the point being, it takes even more out of 'filtered' water. Proving that it's more effective than the whole house filter system. If the whole house filter fails for one reason or another, you're still protected. That's why you use a layered approach. If it didn't take any more out, then it's overkill and no reason to get one.

@@knothead35 I have a Berkey lite and it has two of the black filters which means it should go for 6,000 gallons. I don't drink a lot of water but use it more for cooking. I'm sure at that rate it could last at least 10 years. I do know that you can clean those filters and reverse flow the water with the washer they give you to clean it out.
@@anthonynardella8907 I have 2 of the black filters in my travel one as well. The problem is that berkey's claims of the amount of gallons they're able to filter is incorrect according to other channels that have sent their water for testing. I know it can filter those contaminates, but am wondering at what point the filtering starts to decline. It would be helpful to know how old her filters were when she sent the samples out for testing because that could make a huge difference in results.
When it's time to replace the filters, if you decide to use another type of replacement filter such as the ProOne G2.0 it would be great if you shared your results with these filters since they claim to remove fluoride without using an additional element. Great Video. Thank you.
You could always send your proone’s in (and pay for it) and have them tested and share the results with her. I’m certain she would be more than happy to do this for the UA-cam community.
I agree that the filters seem to last about half of the life they advertise before they get so junked up that it takes forever (6 hours) just to filter a gallon. Also it seems that recently berkey decided to charge like twice as much for their filters compared to pre-pandemic costs. You used to be able to get 2 replacement black filters for like $90, now they're $170 which is a crazy price increase.
Welcome to communism, re: the pricing (gas, dear one.....gas! The plandemic, emphasis on 'plan') and I guess your water is pretty contaminated because mine lasts long, and I drink about 2-3 litters per day. Let's be thankful we CAN pay for it, even if it's steep.

To put simply : If everything costed what they really cost, all taken into account, without this free money printing scam, in your entire life up until today, you would have own a fifth of what you have owned and everything in your room/house would have costed 5 to 10 times more.
Good video! We have owned a Berkey for years we use it to filter water for everything from coffee to cooking. The prepper aspect is also another great reason for having one. We drink a lot more water filtered through the Berkey it has no taste some people say the water tastes thin or soft. If you use yours that often, I would think having your water tested might prove if their claim of how long the filters last is true or not. I'm not telling you to fork over all that money for testing, but I would love to see results from someone who has put closer to 3000 gallons through their filters.
We use a Berkey and have put quite a bit of water through our filters. We live in the city. I think it's also important to note that the filtered water also saves your appliances, such as our coffee maker. The coffee maker was always getting gunked up with white water residuals. Since using the Berkey, our coffee makers last a long time. Most importantly, the water tastes great. The ice cubes don't have unknown particles floating in the water when they melt. I have a Berkey for my home and my camp. Both are on a community water system and both Berkeys have the chlorine/arsenic filters also. I love the taste of my water and I love the Berkey system. Our community has a high level of cancers. I am a survivor as well and the water is the only thing we all have in common so it makes you wonder. ❤
@@petersydow4002 I had cancer before I bought my Berkey. As long as you change and test your filters correctly it works very well according to the test results. 😁
We moved a year ago and our new home has the most terrible water we ever tasted. If left out on the counter to come to room temperature it started smelling like pee! So we tried several water filter pitchers to no avail. We gave in and bought a berkey and it was a total game changer! Otherwise we thought we would have to buy bottled water. I do want to test the water now just out of curiosity. Thank you for this video!
Would be interesting to know how many gallons of water were previously run through your Berkey filter? None of these gravity filters are ever tested to determine how effective they are at their stated capacity. In other words if the manufacturer says they're good for 3,000 gallons, well they still remove as many contaminants at say 2000 gallons, as they did when they were new? Also would've been interesting to see how effective the Berkey would be filtering the water directly from the well.
I am so convinced on Berkey. I use it for absolutely everything because why not, drinking, cooking, giving water to the birds, watering some special plants... When first installing/ priming I'm careful not to contaminate the inside of the filter by running tap water in it. So I use the Berkey pump for it, it's easy and worth the money. My water is perfect.
The problem with Berkey is that it’s not tested to the claims they make. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t work, but the filters should probably be changed well before their claimed use.
Depending on our use. Every two to three years. That is if I'm using two or four. I prefer to. 2 years. Fluoride and charcoal filter love it. I am a water snob. I have a nose like a bloodhound and a pallet to follow. Love our burkey. Best water coffee and tea ever. Always cook with it as well. Love it. 2 years of use, everyday. We fill it. And we have the three and a half gallon. Love it. I think it's three and a half it's been a while. We purchased ours in 2011.
You are absolutely correct. I just watched a video breaking down the Berky filter claims. The independent lab they list that did their testing admits that they only tested all contaminants up to 200 gallons and lead up to 2000 gallons. Yet Berky claims each filter cleans 99.9% of all contaminants up to 3,000 gallons. Totally misleading and a rip off
Buying a berkey was the best decision I ever made! My husband was not happy about the price at first but he’s completely on board after tasting the water and watching videos like this
I come from a research background and appreciate the professional and scientific proof of what you have in verifying the purity of the water our bodies require daily. I use a different brand of filter much like the Berkey and plan to have a well drilled in a couple of months with the idea of using your path to validate the quality from down under. Thank you.
People can be jerky when it comes to a Berkey. That said, if my water is murky, I don' care if people are jerky, I'm not a turkey, I'm buying a Berkey!
Ppl keep telling me berkey is scam but these same people don’t give me any alternative product recommendations. For now until an alternative comes along I will use tha berkey!
I sold installed water treatment systems and Hard Water is more heart healthy than soft water. If you get a softener it is good to run a separate water line to your kitchen sink however if you have very hard water and want to use an R/O filter you should soften it as very hard water may clog your R/O filter quickly
Thank you for this corroboration! I love my Berkey travel size filter system. However, I filter the tap water through Brita water pitchers first and then through the Berkey. My dentist advised me to add a couple shakes of HImalayan salt into the water before I drink it as the Berkey apparently filters out too many minerals and I try to remember to do this. Also give my 2 cats the Berkey water. We're all healthy!
one of the better reviews I've seen. balanced and not overly praising of the Berkey. I'm certianly not a fan of Berkey but I can't complain about someone learning about what they need and what they are getting.
We love the taste of our Berkey water, couldn't live without it. I always drank bottled water to avoid the funky taste if tao water but now I only drink Berkey water!

Thanks for your effort. I have been using Berkey filters for 9 years, and love the taste. I'm on city water that wreaks of chlorine and contains fluoride. I actually use the add on fluoride filters.
@@shilombaba thanks. I did check and apparently the Berkey add on fluoride filters do leach some form of aluminum into the already filtered water. I would be fine with the Berkey black filters, but I need fluoride filtering. I switched to ProOne brand that does it all without addons. It uses something other than an aluminum compound to capture fluoride.
@@kicktree Thanks for the feedback. I'm thinking about switching to ProOne myself, but changing the filters every year is a big leap. Out of curiosity, would you tell me wich size of filters (7 or 9) did you take for which size of Berkey ?
@@shilombaba Well actually the container was from ProOne back when the still called themselves ProPur I think. I got it in 2010. It is a 1.5 gallon. Its just me so I didn't need a big unit. It takes max 2 filters. I ended up with proones' prepper filters. They last about 1k gallons for the pair. 5" model. I would think that you would want to get the 9" for large tanks, but with this in mind: how much water do you anticipate filtering in a year. If it is much less than the life of the filter or filters combined, the I would opt for the 7". Cheaper and it's performance range may fit your 1 year usage better. I use one year lifespan, because I have used filters like these before. They occasional decapitate or fall apart after 18 months or so. It is cheaper to get filters close to the one year mark to avoid all that. Having said that, the cost difference isn't that much, but the idea of spending for new filters can bother some people and when the break before maximum filtering capacity... it may miff some folks. Another thought on size. You want as much of the filter as possible to remain in the reservoir of water for as long as possible. Nothing pissed me off more when my berkey filters were not utilizing the whole filter for almost half of the process. I hope I didn't confuse you with all of my thoughts.
@@kicktree Interesting point with having filters submerged at maximum. I have a Travel size and a Big size (berkey ref). I thought on getting two 9s for the big, but I might go with 7s in that regard, altho, they are given for 10 months, not a full year. And if I apply that for the travel, I shall go below 7s, but that is a very short life span... decisions decisions.
A note about collecting water test samples. For best results use a metal faucet that has no threads. Flame the outer end of the faucet a bit with a small torch to kill incidental coliforms from touching the faucet or splash from washing hands or dishes. Open the container as close to the faucet as possible collect the sample close the container as quickly as possible. Keep your fingers away from the neck of the container and the inside of the lid. Don't lean over or get your head above the container because the least little bit can contaminate and change the results. Some water filters can become a source of contamination if bacteria collect in the filter and reproduce that can increase the number of coliform bacteria in your water sample. As for the Berkey water filters I have no idea of the effective lifespan. Elements in the filters particularly activated carbon can become overloaded with whatever things they collect a
Many store bought purified waters actually have salt added for taste. My husbands grandpa was very upset to learn this when I mentioned it. He kept having swelling in his legs and didn't understand why. Once he changed brands it stopped. We have a Berkey just as a safe guard, we have water right off the mountain and noticed hard water deposits when we moved into the house. That is really the only reason we got it. Great video. I may try pro one filters just to try them out, I like the ceramic filter aspect and the NSF certifications for each contaminate.
We have a ProOne gravity filter. Very happy w/it. It takes out fluoride w/just 1 filter that does it all. We can't stand water w/chlorine in it. Really noticeable after you're used to it being filtered out ! I enjoyed your video & testing your water was a great idea.
I can see you have a good head on your shoulders as my grandma used to say, you did an awesome job laying this out for us. I was sure when you were about to do the Berkey results that the sodium level would drop, but I was surprised with the results. I'm glad your house filter did the job so your taps are safe enough to cook with. In my home I would distill our water for my son's, it was the only way to be sure. I found the local university would test my water for free as a training aid for the students, a win win for all. I bought the Berkey filters, spout and 5gal buckets, to make my own Berkey for our emergency items, just in case. Thank you for a very insightful video.

Great video, love the details shared in this video! We purchased a Berkey after visiting friends in Colorado and tasting the water. Even though we are on city water, the Berkey improves the taste and will come in handy in a grid down or water supply emergency.
Using Berkey filter for a few years. Tap water. Have to clean it every two weeks because brown coating accumulated inside the upper tank and on filters. Looks like it is doing it's job.
Hey, great video! I have recently become concerned about the negative things I’ve been hearing about Berkey. At the time you drew the sample from the Berkey, how old were your filters, or I guess I should ask approximately how many gallons old were your filters? Thanks!
In my opinion the ZIP counterpart RO is best from what is available today. It has the best load and tanks design and more compact. We process 4 gallons a day (2 finished gallons) and ours has lasted us 3.5 years so far with the original filters! I test it every year with two different TDS testers and it is still has a 92% TDS rejection rate! Our well water has around 700ppm TDS. It always completes a cycle within 17 to 19 minutes. It loads easier from the front and fits on a tight corner of our counter better than any other brand. It may use more water but that's good because it rinses the filters better that way, which prolongs them. You do NOT need to change them. Test with a cheap pair of $15 TDS meters and replace when rejection rate falls below 85%. Be advised to treat the outlet handle gently and clean out the tanks once or twice a year with soap and water and then vinegar. Our handle pivot pin broke and I had to fix it with a small nail and bent it on one end to keep it in. Now it won't break again.
Wow! Thank you so much! I bought a Berkey because I’d heard they were the best. Then I watched a UA-cam video about how the Berkey doesn’t really test their water. They just give estimates. I think water needs to be good because that’s the one thing that my family & really all families use most. So now, I’m still wondering why your tests came back that your Berkey was pretty good, while others found through testing, that their Berkies were not filtering out some really bad things! So, do I need a filter for my whole house? A reverse osmosis filter?! Or, a Kangan?! So many questions! I’d better get started!!!

I would love to see a terracotta reservoir for the Berkey. Yes it would lose a little water through evaporation, but that would also chill the water without refrigeration.
I'm looking into Brazilian Stefani Sao Joao ceramic water filters. The reservoir is made out of terracotta and it uses ceramic filters. I imagine you could still use Berkey filters in it.
We have enough iron for nails to come out of the faucets but not quite I guess. We've also had slightly dingbatted filters but NOW are set up with the best we can get. 2 back-washed filters in series and a big whole house backwash and a black Berkey full of elements. The Berkey has been here for years and a regular at trapping all kinds of stuff out of the well. NO KIDNEY STONES is a GRAND price to pay and well wort it. Folks may growl about a Berkey but not us. That was very interesting. Ty. My only concern at this point is, at what point was the berkey tested within the advertised 2000 gallon it claims. What it may be at brand new, or 200 gallons or does it filter at the same rate at their claims.
Jumped on here just to say, thank you for this review. I was on the fence to buy because it’s pricey for someone on social security. Your review sold me. We normally buy 36 gallons of purified water and 4 32 count cases of bottled water every month. I hate the plastic! We are on a well that has high iron and manganese in it. And sediment. So I bit the bullet and purchased the Royal bundle using your code Tidbits and save almost $22. This video and the savings was a win win. Keep doing what you do. It helps others.
Healthy water is the first step . The next step is taste. Super filtered water can be soft and very bland ? I drink well water from my land in Scotland quite hard water , i find soft filtered water is tasteless, distilled water is even worse. So as long as the water is safe, surely taste is the main consideration?

I have seen other videos of people testing the water from Berkey multiple times and have yet to be convinced its not good. Thanks for this great video, I appreciate the level of detail.
All I hear is the water tastes good. I could careless about the taste. All I care about is how clean and safe the water is. The more I learn how Berkeys don't have enough testing, the more concerned I am.
I just purchased a multipure aquaversa because of their transparency and HIGH testing for removing gunk. I want CLEAN water. Period. I was almost sold on berkey but had the same feelings after the research - I also decided against a kangen for that reason. The hype doesn't equal effective and the truth usually requires a bit more digging and I'm happy I found a solution that works for me.
We’ve used and periodically tested Berkey water for over 20 yrs. 100% satisfied. I do not care about government certifications or bureaucratic approvals. I only care about the science of the system and quality of product. Berkey checks all the boxes for me.
Appreciate the video it actually helped me out a lot I already bought a Berkey and had backup filters and everything else it's nice to see that they do work to an extent probably not as much but in a crap hits the fan situation I would boil whatever water let it cool then run it through my water filters but anyway thank you
The only thing that I haven't seen is how long the thing actually works. They claim thousands of gallons, but the only testing Berkey has done has been about 200 gallons and then they extrapolate the results to say 3k gallons. You didn't mention how old your filter is or how much has gone through it. Also, the fact that you have another system that comes between your well and your Berkey means it doesn't have to do as much work as someone who used it as their frontline system. Berkey claims that testing is too expensive, but given the prices they're charging I would think they should have the money to pay for it. That's what makes me skeptical. There can be a big difference between how it works at 200 vs 2k gallons depending on the source of your water. I think you're on the right track with the testing. I think I would test every 500 gallons through the lifecycle of the filter to know how long it actually functions based on my water source.
heard there is a class action lawsuit against them in Cal. because of the same reason the claims they are making are not tested. I found it on utube ....I just got mine a few days ago and am returning it. I dont know how they can claim 2000 gal + especially at their prices when they dont have outside unbiased testing.
I really like your Berkey Videos, because of you I ordered the Travel Berkey as we are just a household of two. We are connected to the Frankfurt (Germany) water system and due to what is going on in the world I was looking for a water filtration system. Thanks to you I decided to picked the Berkey System. Thanks for your Videos.

I’ve had a Berkey for several months. Our city water in now much more drinkable. The first time I made lemonade with Berkey water the difference in taste was amazing. I started making Berkey ice cubes. I found that the flavor of my Diet Pepsi held up through the entire 20 ounces. I’m never going back.
We bought a counter top ice maker just to do exactly that! LOL Our fridge does have a filter...but not sure how good it is. So only in an emergency do we use that ice. I'm glad to see we aren't the only ones.

Thank you for sharing your data. When it was impossible to buy a Berkey due to them being sold out, I bought the filters and built my own with 5-gallon food grade buckets. I live in Las Vegas, and I can say I can absolutely taste a difference in the tap water and the filtered water. I should probably get my water tested, however, for taste alone, I no longer taste or smell chlorine.

My daughter and her family are living in an RV. sound familiar? They sold their house last year and they got a big truck and off they went. Their daughters ( my granddaughter) are 15 and 13 so is a good age to travel and see everything. She got a Berkey for the RV . Everywhere they stopped who knew what they were drinking. They also live in Iowa. they tried to stay here but they couldn't get it insulated enough to be warm. Their pillows froze against the wall or window. So they are off. We are getting snow and they left this morning for Texas. I know that Covid is everywhere so I pray for them. thanks Joyce

Good job. Very thorough. You mentioned sodium and wondered about the "salt" taste possibility. Sodium would only taste salty if it was salt in the sodium chloride form.
I'm a long time user of Berkey. I bought my unit when I was living in rural Southern Minnesota -- home to a world of corn and soy and pig farms -- arsnic contamination as well a lead and pesticides were the big red flags. I was renting so I wasnted something effective but also portable -- I chose the Traveler. Since then I've moved. I now live in Northern California, still renting, but now I'm on city water that has so much clorine that sometimes it makes my eyes water when I turn on the tap. I've always been happy with the unit but lately I've wondered if it's still something I need to be doing. So. I've watched a number of water system reviews and your's is the best, most comprehensive and helpful I've seen! Thank You!! Great Advice!! It's clear what I need to do is get my water tested both from my Berkey and from my kitchen sink to get a clear idea of what I need

Thanks for doing all this research and sharing the information. It was interesting and informative. My sister has a Berkey water filter. She lives across the street from me, so has the same water supply. I have a whole house filter, but it would be a good idea for me to get my water tested. I have very hard water as well, here I SW Idaho. One question I have is, how do you know when to change the Berkey filters?
Glad it was helpful Cynthia! We are right there with you on the hard rocky mountain water! In regards to your question on the filters - The Berkey website states they can last up to 3-4 years with regular use. I noticed our old ones not filtering well even after I cleaned them and they had more build up faster. It was about 3 year in, so that is when I replaced them. Tap Score also told me it was very important to follow the guidelines for the filters because it can quickly change if the filters are too old. They just won't keep everything out and in fact might introduce more bacteria. So I am sticking with about 3 years!
@@TIDBITSandCompany Thank you for the video! I´m thinking about buying a Berkey and I´m quite confused by all information on the internet. May I ask, how old were the filters in your Berkey at the time of testing? Please tell me, they were "old", so I can stop to hesitate :D

Thank u so much for taking the time to post this. super informative. I want to test my Berkey water compared to my ProOne gravity-fed water filtered water, both compared to bottled spring water out of curiosity. I haven't known what company to use to do the testing, so this was super helpful. I'm curious as to how much their testing kit costs. I've had sticker shock at several I've viewed online. here's to hoping that this is affordable. thanks again!!
Looks like $149 - $629 for tap water testing. However, if you have rainwater, we'll water, spring water it may be different. There's a link under the description you can click.
Wow, great video. I appreciate how thorough you were in your explanations. I’ve had my Berkey for about 5 years, same set up as yours, absolute best investment ever.
@@debredhead9199 Same. I've had mine for 6 years, no replacement of the black carbon, only the fluoride filter. It's still running perfect. I need to clean it only once a year roughly. When I wait longer it's still filtering perfectly but it is a bit slower. As I fill it in the evening it does its thing overnight so not a problem. One person household and I use it for everything.

We too have a Berkey and use it for drinking, cooking and making ice cubes. The water tastes better with no odor. We get city water in our home , never had it tested but it has a strong odor and that alone made us go for a Berkey and just not trusting the water that we are getting through our home. So many people purchase bottled water and the Berkey eliminates that as well , if I go on a hike, just fill your own bottle with Berkey water . Helps the environment since plastic bottles can be eliminated. I think pretty much everyone would benefit having a Berkey or a Doule which is the British version .

One of the most common causes for the detection of a biological in a water sample test by water plant operators, is not getting the faucet they were taking the sample from cleaned properly first. This is a common occurrence and in some cases has forced boil water notices when one was not needed. Another cause when taking outdoor samples, is a dry, dusty and windy day. It only takes one contaminated dust particle to fail a test.
Thanks for going to all the trouble. Great info - One question about your Berkey - how old were the filters in your berkey when you sent the water from your berkey for the test? My research shows that the Berkey begins to degrade after about 150 gallons.
This is the question In my head as well. I have had a Berkey for many years now, but have been skeptical about the number of gallons the filters actually filter.
My husband and I have watched all your videos and love your calm, insightful, no hype approach. Thank you for the testing and the cleaning video. You either do things right or you don't. You are a great spokeswoman for Berkey.
With regards to greensand vs reverse osmosis at 10:30, I think there might have been some confusion. Tapscore was likely recommending a RO drinking water system only, which is all around the best option for ensuring you have purified drinking water. Since you say the local water guy said RO was overkill and led you to greensand, he was probably thinking whole house RO, which is usually reserved for wells with excessive TDS levels (>1500 ppm). In your case with TDS at 300, whole house RO is definitely overkill, but for drinking water it's a great option
Thank you for this and your other Berkey videos. I live in the UK and have just purchased the Royal from Berkey UK, we get loads of rain so filtering it is great. Once again thanks for taking the time. 🇬🇧
Thanks so much. Really a sad commentary on our civilization that we have no clean air, water or food. It’s a struggle to try and salvage what small pieces of each of these we can for survival and to remain disease free.😢
Even in wilderness areas, it is common to get sick from the water because wildlife use it too. There are many naturally-occurring hazards (bacteria, viruses, amoebas... even radon) that get into drinking water. In mountains, the water is often full of minerals and sediments. Sometimes they're harmful, sometimes helpful... depending on what kind of rock the mountains are made of.
Thank you! Our city water often smells swampy or chloriney. We got a Berkey 5 years ago and love it. I don’t even do the red dye test much anymore because the water smells and tastes great. Fluoride isn’t added to our water so we don’t use fluoride filters. One quick shortcut to extend the time between cumbersome filter scrubbing: A quick re-priming often speeds it up and you don’t even have to take the filters off if you have a deep (laundry type) sink. Just pop the button on and prime each filter. Takes two minutes. (Note: One mistake you didn’t mention in your “10 mistakes” video - don’t over tighten the wing nuts on the filters. I stripped one once, which is why I don’t like to remove them).
@@noeldeal8087 the Berkey comes with an attachment (similar size to a button) that you place on your faucet then hold the filter opening up to it. It forces water thru the filter to prime it (rinses the interior ssurface off)
I bought a Berkey a couple of days ago, and it will be here tomorrow. I've been drinking RO water for eons, unfortunately, and cannot wait to start drinking healthy water. Good job, thumb up!
The biggest reason that my Berkey has been collecting dust and taking up space is that the dang thing won't filter at more than a trickle. It takes more than a day to filter half a gallon, and even then, there is a residual odor and taste. It's using two of the black filters. I've tried the primer pump.
I think there are some filter cleaning instructions that came with the Berkey. I'm thinking I remember that you have to take a brand new dish scrubber and clean the outsides of the filters or something like that, I'm not positive. Read your instructions.
@@alleyoop5185 I did. I even used the priming pump, which had to be purchased separately. I wonder if they had a bad batch of the black filters and I was just unlucky? But I have no inclination to throw good money after bad.
@@mattkelso2119 I’ve heard reports that the dang Berkeley filter can fail at the glued ends. But then I would assume it would dribble water faster? I have a alexapure which seems to filter slowly until I submerge the filter. Then it almost sounds like a trickle. I wonder if it has a leak at the top of the filter. I’m going to replace it soon so I guess I’ll find out if I’m right. My alexapure takes about an hour per gallon.
I was thinking the exact same thing. I have a well, but not a fancy house filtration, so I would've liked to know the results of running the straight well water thru the Berkey.
Good recap. I have one remaining question… how many gallons have gone through the Berkey? I’ve seen results where the filters degrade very quickly, so the relative age of the filters seems to matter a lot.
Do not buy it but another one this one was never tested besides their own lab results they had them on their site and none of them passed. And when you reach out hey ignore you it’s a wonder they give people to review this that obviously do not research or even treat correctly. She is being used to sell their shit. It does not work. Do not buy
I’ve been using 2 filters for almost 2 years now, for everything from ice cubes, cooking pasta, and dog water(1-2 gal a day). Haven’t tested, but it is still doing its job. Tap water is undrinkable where I live.
Your last comment about using your water test as backup to complaints was the bottom line to this video for me. The rest was great information, but without rationality, nothing works. Thank you so much.
It would be interesting to compare Berkey output from the well water compared to the whole-house-filtered water. I'm sure there are reasons that isn't really practical, but it would be interesting to see the results.
I have a Berkey countertop filter and luv it....! The home where I used to live I had aa well drilled and I'll have to say the water looked and smelled fine.I had hardware stores free testing and the well drillers test through county ....showed low nitrates and iron and bacteria..However they do NOT check for the real bad stuff. SO I have friends that own an holistic clinic and they perform air and water sample testing. The well water was bad...arsenic-tin-copper-lead-aluminum-cadmium-iron. My neighbor who lived out of town had his water checked at a lab and had the same results.Just letting you know that the holistic clinic uses kneisiology/muscle testing to test the air and water samples ...and with high accuracy I may add ....if you have a good muscle tester. Another interesting thing found in the water samples from the clinic was a patient that had Lyme disease....! She tested positive for Lyme and was never bitten by a tick. However when the clinic investigated they found the Lyme bacteria in the water.Further investigation showed from the land abstract that years ago the land was used as an exotic animal farm zoo.....and the water become contaminated with Lyme. The clinic also mentioned to me that when they perform random air tests they have found the Lyme bacteria in the air samples.Talk about a red flag....can anyone say chem-trails..! On another note if you drill deep enough you can hit what is called "Primary" water.....it is all over the planet beneath the mantle. It is pure water....mining companies have ran into this water even under seabeds. Cheers.....!
When I was at my parents house we had a well and we were using salt in the water softener. After we moved in to the house I had some bloodwork done and my sodium levels were way to high. I'm not a person to really salt my food during cooking or at the table so I know the water softener had to be the culprit. We switched to potassium crystals in the brine tank and when I had another blood draw several months later everything was balanced and normal. I would try a couple of bags and see if you can tell a difference. At my house now, we are on city water and we have a homemade Berkey filter. I'm happy to see your results I think I'm going to test out water too. Especially since we are going to need radon mitigation.
Sodium in water is definitely a concern. I have mine set to bypass while I figure out what to do. When it was ON my wife complained that water tasted salty, then a few days later she told me her feet swelled up. Me I started getting dizziness I went to check our BP and was shocked how high it was. So after 2 weeks of having it set on bypass, feet swelling went away so did my dizziness. So yea salt in water did affect us.
What do you mean ? What is set on bypass? A water softener will give you high blood pressure and other problems. Every glass of water can have 80 mg. of salt and if you use even more softener than that can make no even higher.

We love our Berkey water. We have city water....but honestly our neighborhood seems to have a water line break about every 6 months or so. (maybe as houses are built?) When those things happen the water is tinted red, and the filters show how bad the water was during that time. We also can tell the difference in our coffee! Way cleaner taste! We do have the flouride filters and have wondered how well they work, as Berkey says they 'reduce' the amount of flouride....but not certain how much. I did notice those test were pricy. But I'm sure it is something that should be done. We do get water notices on our city water....but when they are not compliant, we get the notice way after the occurrence, thus try to use Berkey water for most cooking and drinking. Oh and Berkey says they don't filter salt water.
Thank you for going through the test. I have been reading that the Berkey is not NSF certified, so seeing YOUR independent test is confirmation for me. Even though other water filters are BPA free, I still prefer stainless steel to any kind of plastic. AND Berkey Systems don't need electricity!

Reverse osmosis is not overkill. I believe it's the best possible thing to use to filter water because it removes just about everything except bacteria or lowers the level to a minimal level and you can put lots of gallons through it before you need to change the filters. One negative is it needs a constant flow of water to keep the membrane clear but you can capture that water and use it in your garden. I'm on city water but if I was on well water I would filter it then put it through reverse osmosis and then put it through a UV bacteria killing unit.
I was just ordering my big Berkey with 2 extra filters and a stainless steel spigot when I suddenly remembered watching these videos and seeing a discount code offered at the end.

It simply tastes better and my animals prefer it too! I just ordered some replacement filters. Thanks for the discount code too!
It would be interesting to see results of the Berkey with straight well water.
There’s a class action suit against the company so it should be public available knowledge.
Hopefully the lawsuit against them will reveal that to us.
It doesn’t filter out calcium n magnesium. Our well isn’t even that bad but it does not take out hard water so I have to wonder if it really would take out important stuff.
Yes it would 😉 be interesting 🤔 to test the straight well water 💦
There's a video on this and it does what it says. Leaves minerals but removes all the other crap.
Lol.

@@anthonynardella8907 I have 2 of the black filters in my travel one as well. The problem is that berkey's claims of the amount of gallons they're able to filter is incorrect according to other channels that have sent their water for testing.

Yea. That would have been a better test. Considering it's a berkey video!¡

Do you use city or well water? Just curious what your results were, how good they are at eliminating pharmaceuticals, fluoride, etc.
Are you drunk dude??? If Berkey was selling bogus stuff the company would have been shut down over 20 years ago...get a grip man
They didn't pay their govt club money dues, but for me, the proof is in my delicious water.
Totally misleading and a rip off
This is what I'm reading about. That yes, it's good... but how long do the filters actually work? No one knows???
Buying a berkey was the best decision I ever made! My husband was not happy about the price at first but he’s completely on board after tasting the water and watching videos like this

Thanks for your effort. I have been using Berkey filters for 9 years, and love the taste. I'm on city water that wreaks of chlorine and contains fluoride. I actually use the add on fluoride filters.
You should check if the fluoride filters don't release aluminium, because apparently, it has been reported.

I may try pro one filters just to try them out, I like the ceramic filter aspect and the NSF certifications for each contaminate.

Jumped on here just to say, thank you for this review. I was on the fence to buy because it’s pricey for someone on social security. Your review sold me. I wonder about a lot of this and have heard mixed opinions on Berkey. I've used one with the fluoride filters for a few years and really enjoy it.

I’d be interested to know how the Berkey filters your well water from the pump as opposed to your home filtration system
I assume she takes water from the kitchen sink and filters it through the Berkeley.
@@hikingaftersixty yes, which makes the Berkey test completely pointless and useless!

We too have a Berkey and use it for drinking, cooking and making ice cubes. The water tastes better with no odor. We get city water in our home , never had it tested but it has a strong odor and that alone made us go for a Berkey and just not trusting the water that we are getting through our home.

Lol, we are so past 150 gals on ours!
Thank you for sharing your information with concerned people. your thoughts and time is truely appreciated.
Not sure what you mean. How do you reprime and what button are you talking about? We don't follow...
Did you prime it correctly?
It would have been great to test the well water directly put through the Berkey
I am curious if the Berkey water came directly from the well, or from the filtered tap? Testing both ways would have been interesting.
I was thinking the exact same thing. I have a well, but not a fancy house filtration, so I would've liked to know the results of running the straight well water thru the Berkey.
She said she uses tap water to fill the Berkey
Wow! That is really cool. I really want to test my water now. I love my Berkey. It is such a blessing.
Good recap. I have one remaining question… how many gallons have gone through the Berkey? I’ve seen results where the filters degrade very quickly, so the relative age of the filters seems to matter a lot.
It is not certified it does not work it’s all a lie this chick obviously didn’t try to ferment foods cause she would find it doesn’t work.
Do not buy it but another one this one was never tested besides their own lab results they had them on their site and none of them passed.
We have such tests in the pipeline. :-) We're as curious as you are.
Thank You so much for this video we appreciate it! I always knew our Berkey was doing what they claim!! Thanks again!!!

(maybe as houses are built?) Reverse osmosis is not overkill.
