For those who don't know already: Every vegan food example that she mentioned has protein. Even vegetables, to some degree. Some more than others, of course. Here is that part of the video: ua-cam.com/video/z39Q4wqlZ6k/v-deo.html
MF TH yup. When I was vegan for 4 years that was the constant question. I still get the question being a vegetarian. I love some protein shakes, beans in dishes, etc. Nat Port nicely gives her opinions here. Weirdly plants do feel pain, scientists have discovered but I don't eat any seafood or animals because they have minds.
I love her and the way she is promoting veganism! Been vegan for three years and vegetarian for almost 20 years and would never go back. Animals are just too awesome.
For over a decade Natalie Portman built her image on preachin being vegan (which involves more than just eating options), but she also endorses a brand that allows animal testing for their products. So much about ethical living! She better have gone haunting for her food in the woods and stop promoting a brand with a history of animal torture... The first vegan I met didn't tell me she was vegan. After many long, wide ranging discussions, I asked if she wanted to join me at a restaurant. Only then did she mention that she was vegan. She wasn't vegan because she wanted to tell people that she was vegan. That was a silly question. There are so many good reasons to go vegan. There is even a video on UA-cam called "101 Reasons to Go Vegan." I can't believe I asked her "Where do you get your protein?" I was so ignorant then.
I don't tell either. I m vegan for myself. I feel good. I love all animals. I wasn't feel good when I was eating them. Congrats to your friend for her attitude.

Actually, since you don't understand that commenting on something shows that you DO care enough to voice your opinion about it, makes YOU the stupid one. If you didn't care, you would simply ignore it. Just like I'm going to do after posting this. Bye.
Wrong, the reason one would say that, is because it puts down the others opinion is so the person stops saying things. nothing more. You are clearly no psychologist. I dont care about your opinion, that means, I am not going to consider it, when making a specific value judgement on something. It does not mean that I dont care enough to not listen to your opinion at all. Dont get into debates with people who have a larger intellectual capacity than you.

LOL. So true. I feel like meat eaters ask stupid questions not to get informed or because they are curious but so they piss vegans off. It's like asking someone "If you don't get your fluids from sodas, where do you get it from?"
NPC yet your the one deep in a post made by a vegan. Retards always project onto others, I’m not surprised. A good remedy when you are triggered is to shut the fuck up. Good luck with it!
Yeah tofu came about some time in ancient China, whereas Veganism started in 1944. I'm aware that a similar philosophy has been practiced in ancient traditions, but I was referring to the western, modern day movement. Tofu was definitely not made for vegans lol, it was made by accident! xD
She didn't state it herself, at 1:12 she reads out a commonly used excuse as to why people won't go vegan. It's a silly excuse as some people make it sound like tofu is a product of veganism when it's not haha. :) Plus there's so many other options. The tofu probably wasn't even prepared nicely, there's so many ways to prepare it lol.
moonatnoon I like to give people facts and say world hunger would be solved if people ate less meat. Why? Because giving the cow water and water for the plants or grain to feed the cow is equivalent to showering for a month. The grain can go to people and of course water. Being vegetarian is always more eco friendly. But a lot of meat eaters have literally said to me wow, that cool, but I really like burgers. Oye. Yeah, like it all you want but I'm saying it comes as a high cost and impact. Consciousness is not a virtue for a lot of people in my cynical opinion.
Novella Cinephile Yeah in a way it is very true what you are saying. If every human would be ethical vegan. Not only eating a plants based diet. When it comes to that the „world-hunger-would-be-solved-thing“ I would highly recommend „5 things vegans say that are wrong“ by veganspeak and also to read the comments :) (Also I wanted to make an addition to my comment: I meant all of the animal agriculture -dairy, egg, whool,...industry, not only the meat industry is taking enormes amounts of plants (mostly grains and legumes (soy) aaand also water! Like you mentioned Novella Cinephile)
As someone who produced a documentary about factory farms, I expected a lot more from the last question/comment. If you cared so much about plants, you wouldn't eat animals, as it takes 14 pounds of plants to produce one pound of meat. So if you wanna save plants, eat the plants, not the meat.
rozbeh ariya that wouldn't be everyone's answer. Most vegans what they don't like is the industrialization of farm animals and the horrible living conditions they live in. They loathe those who kill the prey they are gonna eat because at least they aren't hypocrites who buy meat on the supermarket without seeing the process before that meat getting there. Also many vegans agree that one reason to be vegan is because NOW we have many options (flavored fake meat made with tofu, beans burgers, etc) they are not available on the supermarket something that didn't exist decades ago. So if one were on a desert island and needed to eat meat to survive, one would absolutely do so with little remorse, because you don't have the resources to eat something else, and that animal didn't live a caged constricted life to be on your plate.
It is said that in times of need, man is known to eat man. All talk of compassion, values, good conduct, morals and ethics applies only in times of abundance. Make a dozen affluent people meet, and they will talk about helping others and making the world a better place. Keep those dozen people hungry for a week, and then only provide enough food for two of them. The same people will fight each other to death to fill their bellies.
As someone previously mentioned, they don’t have a lot of time to debunk these statements, it needs to be easily digested by the viewing audience because attentionspan is very low. Suitable format for the show and the audience. I would also have loved to hear her go more into depth with the answers and hopefully she’ll do a more lengthy video soon.

+christopher rembert poor people eat plants because they're cheaper, I don't know who you think is going to starve to death without animals. It's not economically viable to eat animals if you can't afford to eat...
sony harris There's a great over population of animals in certain areas, many who are starving. Killing them out of mercy is not being VIOLENT but I guess since you have far more of your naive fanbase agreeing with you, I must be wrong. LOL
If it happens to come up in conversation and I mention I'm vegan, I always get "wow I could NEVER, I love meat too much" like okay cool I wasn't telling you to be vegan? Also, I cook a lot of really yummy food and always get "oh this doesn't taste vegan!" Like oops sorry, I forgot to sprinkle on my "vegan" seasoning lol I think people expect it to be flavorless gummy vegetable sludge or something
Lol I would respond with well what does “vegan” taste like according to you? I’d do it just to hear their answer so they’d realize what a strange thing they just said.
hi! not sure you'll notice my comment, but is there like a really wholesome source where i can get the "basics" when it comes to cooking vegan foods? so far i only have mastered Natalie's chickpea stew haha
Claire Simoneaux Plants aren’t sentient, meaning while they are technically living, they lack pain receptors that animals have as well as a plethora of other things such as emotional intelligence, ability to form connection with others etc :)
alice hatterz omg that argument is beyond ridiculous I cannot argue with such stupidity lmao. But please note for future reference so you don’t embarrass yourself again: responding to stimuli does not equal emotional intelligence, and it certainly doesn’t mean they feel pain. Ok bye lol take this nonsense elsewhere.
defense mechanisms of plants are just automatic reflexes, they have no thought or conscious decision over what they do. they’re not sentient. like the way plants face the sun for photosynthesis.. they don’t ‘decide’ to do it, it’s just what plants do

3. "everyone gets to decide for themselves." ... except the ones that get the knife in their throat. (Just my extremist opinion) Kill a dog and you're a psychopath, kill a pig and you're normal, but kill neither one and you are an extremist! I do admire how positive she can stay about anything.
It doesn't say anywhere in the Quran that you HAVE to eat anything. I chose to eat Plant-based foods that God gave to me. They're filled with nutrients and come straight from the earth I prefer it that way :) Plus heart disease is the number 1 cause of death in the united states and it's linked to eating red meats and smoking so I would rather increase (obviously you never know when you will die) my chances of living/not dying from heart disease.
I heard that her family doesnt eat something that have suffer. So what's the truth ,is a marketing to veganism or her family eats what they want and how she handles ,how many meal is she is prepares 😅
"How do you get you Protein?" Well let me tell you, I get mine from: Beans, Nuts, protein bars, Broccoli, Spinach, Asparagus, mushrooms (Lots of shrooms), avocados, and any real leaf veggie. There are also other alternatives that I'm not a big fan such as: Protein shakes, supplements, Tofu(gross), Potatoes, and fake meats and cheeses. Not to mention for anyone that is Vegan or Vegetarian Rice and beans are the super meal. I went on a Pure Rice and Bean diet for a whole year mixing that with a mile a day and other workouts I lost 35 pounds. I must admit I have steered away from that, but I do eat Rice and beans quite often still, just not everyday.
I’ve been a vegetarian since I’m 16.. actually pretty much my whole life as I never liked eating meat foods. But the one thing I get that I’m tired of is: “something must’ve happened to you as a child”.. ahh No. I just never liked it and once I was old enough to understand how the process is done. That did for me, I was DONE. That’s basically it :))
D Deeze, the reason I asked why you're not vegan is because even "humane" farms cause suffering. For example, cows produce produce milk for their babies, just like any other mammal. So they are forcibly impregnated by farmers (just imagine how violating that must feel) and shortly after birth, they are separated from their babies, which is traumatising for both mother and baby. If the baby is male, since he can't produce milk, he is slaughtered and his corpse is cut up and sold as veal meat. If the baby is a female, she will have the same future as her mother. Cows go through this cycle several times until their abused and worn-out body can no longer produce profitable amounts of milk, and so they are slaughtered and their corpse is cut up and sold for humans to eat (it wouldn’t be profitable to keep them alive).
That’s cool maybe consider going vegan I’m also vegetarian slowly converting to veganism. I can also relate lmao but yeah veganism is much better for everyone and the environment
@NPC bold and ignorant assumption. I only consume soy as a novelty. My food comes mostly from local farmers, my garden, and wild-crafted. How much of YOUR food do you source self sufficiently, hmmm?
@@reggiecactus2810 I can eat whatever I want. I choose on the daily. When I actually was a "strict" vegetarian/vegan, I did still eat honey. Most vegans that I knew did not. It's all about choice, eh?
@NPC so you eat animals alive? bones and all with no cooking, just your teeth? And nobody is allowed to cook their food over a natural fire? or eat anything that doesn't require cooking? Your arguments are some WEAK-SAUCE
If you’re new to tofu buy the one labeled medium and fry it really well and don’t forget to salt it. The really firm tofu blocks taste too much like soy and if you’re a beginner you won’t like it. This is just from my experience though. Also try different brands sometimes the coagulant they use to make the tofu tastes too vinegary so don’t give up on the first time just buy different brands they’re cheap anyway. For me personally the fried medium tofu has an egg white texture.

It's great that you respect vegans, but what about respecting the animals too? Instead of being violent towards animals, or paying others to carry out the violence on your behalf, you could just be vegan. Please have some empathy and imagine being in the position of your victims, the animals, and I’m sure you’ll think very differently about this issue.
Arwen, Humans don't need animal products to be healthy. There are millions of healthy vegans out there, including athletes (eg patrik baboumian). And health organisations and experts, like the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the British NHS, the Dietitians of Canada, and the president of the president of the American College of Cardiology have said any person can be healthy without animal products at any stage of their life. The scientific consensus is that consuming animal products is unnecessary. Vegans also tend to develop less health problems, like heart conditions, diabetes, cancer, etc. The point though, is that you can be healthy on a plant-based diet. So why do you choose to be violent towards animals when you could be vegan? Does abusing defenseless animals make you feel powerful?
Kitten Lyric, Even if most vegans were assholes, that’s no reason for you to take it out on the animals by paying for their suffering and slaughter. You’re angry at a vegans, but you’re taking it out on others (ie the animals). If a black person yelled in your face and called you a piece of shit, would that be a good enough reason to disrespect other black people? No. But, actually, most vegans are actually apologists and will, in fact, ENCOURAGE nonvegans to take baby steps. Unfortunately, for your victims, the animals, this is a matter of life or death. When you’re not vegan, you’re funding suffering and violence.
Pappy Tron, I don't think he does, but to be honest, I've done no research on it. It doesn't really matter. You can be healthy and that's the point. You don't have to take drugs to be vegan. So why choose to be inflict violence upon animals, when you could just be vegan? Also, why do you think human lives have more value than the lives of other animals?
Look look look I really like Natalie Portman. I agree with what all these comments are saying - I think she's very smart, cool, and friendly. I too am a vegan and one who studies it quite a lot. And this common, passive response from so many vegans, "everyone can choose for themselves" or "do what makes you feel good" or "you're free to choose to eat whatever you want" is not the true core message of veganism because for the animals there is no choice. Life is a constant hell. Your 30 seconds of tastebud satisfaction does not justify castration, mutilation, forced impregnation, and slaughter. I know this is unpalatable even for the fellow vegans because this is a fun, happy, everything's-great kind-of video but the truth is quite sinister. I agree in helping people move forward but to issue the tepid responses of "everyone gets to decide for themselves" doesn't do anything for animals. I'm glad to hear she's an animal, environmental, health activist, I'll listen for more from her. And just to confirm: she's right, plants are not sentient beings.
Hal, You are 100% correct. Its too bad people like you are not famous, so you can spread the message about the animal Holocaust. But instead, leftist losers like her make it seem like its all good, its a free world and you can eat and torture animals if that's what you chose.
Hal, thank you too. I wish you all the best and that you get a platform where you can spread this message of compassion. You are very articulate and people will listen to you!
She isn’t just beautiful on the outside. Her love and kindness for animals and other makes her soul beautiful. Good job to every vegan, vegetarian out there. You guys are awesome!!! It’s not easy, but u do it for the animals. You guys are awesome ❤
She’s so cute! I’ve been a vegan for about 7 yrs now and I have heard it ALL! For instance my father-in-law basically thinks that all I eat is tofu. *eye roll* on the contrary I rarely eat tofu.
Have you tried speaking to him instead of rolling your eyes? Some vegans eat very simple meals, while others like to jazz it up and make it look like a meat-based meal. He might be surprised by and/or interested in something you make. I keep my regular meals pretty basic, but I crack out my Veganomicon when hosting others.

Glad she is vegan, but disappointed in most of her answers. “Everyone can choose for themselves” defeats the point of veganism. Animals are not ours to consume.
The day I decided to become vegeterian my parents didnt accept it.. my dad, more he was like "Humans are suppost to eat meat cause meat makes u smart" and I was like.. NO meat makes me FAT not smart.. *btw Im 17 and I wanted from 14 to become vegeterian or vegan but I thought that "I couldn't live without meat"* and when he asked me if Im eating fish I said no and he started screaming cause fishhaves O3 vitamins and staff.. *btw after 4-5 month my mam things that she's gonna make me start eat meat and fish again and my older bro thinks that if he's keep telling me to eat meat and fish "for fan" Im gonna start eat "normal" again.."

My response: 1. "eating meat since beginning of time" - we also have been drinking fresh spring water since the beginning of time, we also have never used toilets or toothbruse since the beginning of time... 2. dating other vegans - you date whoever you like, and you like someone because of their appearance and personality, not becoz of their beliefs or goals, coz u tend to set those aside when trying to build a meaningful relationship, and beliefs and goals only come up once u both feel secure with each other and u tend to influence each other and beliefs and goals change over time.. 3. "kids being vegan" - a parent should educate and inform their children (not indoctrinate) to the point that they'll be able to make informed decisions themselves and become responsible for it... 4. People should be told that one is vegan becoz veganism is the truth, and people don't like hearing the truth. We are primates and anatomically we are herbivores and occasional insectivores (invertebrates), but we are not meat eaters (eating vertebrates, anything that can bleed), the consequences of eating meat is costly for our health, and the consequences for production of meat as a daily food source is costly for the entire world - environmentally, socially, economically.. 5. "BBQ parties" People, in general, can hang out at parties without eating, it's totally cool, if the host was really genuine he/she could prepare non-meat food or ask his vegan guest to bring fruits and veggie salads if possible, it's not that difficult... 6. "tofu" -- look you can go vegan and just not eat tofu or anything with soy, it is that simple... it's like a meat eater who doesn't eat pork... or a vegan who doesn't eat oats... or a meat eater who doesn't eat shrimp... soy is just one food out of the thousands of other plant food out there.. 7. "Afford being a vegan" - the only reason meat is affordable for everyone nowadays is becoz the govt subsidizes the meat industry, coz the trillion dollar meat industry also pays these politicians off... so taxpayers' money HAS to go to subsidies for the meat and pharmaceutical industries (pharma industries produce more drugs for farm animals than for humans).. before factory farming was a thing, people ate a mostly plant based diet in a week...farmed animals was very pricy... only eggs, dairy, and fish were affordable... during WW1 and WW2, affected countries rationed and the foods available were mostly plant based except for cheese.... w/o the subsidies, the price of canned corned beef would 3x or 4x depending on brand... 8. "island stranding" - question is an impossible one... it's like asking if someone was stranded on a unknown planet...like when was the last time u were actually stranded on an island? and at that time, did u find any vertebrate animal there to kill and eat?? 9. "feeling sorry for plants" - we grow 70% of total plant produce to feed to 50 billion farm animals... farm animals like cows, pigs, chickens eat more food than humans would on a lb per lb basis... so we'd be "killing" less plants if all of us humans just ate them instead of eating farm animals that require a ton of plant food as well...
Once I was thinking like you, dear Natalie, but now I am the opinion that I say to my children not to lie, not to hit, to be kind, to respect others, not to kill, of course. So I can't say: It's your personal choise to eat Animals because this is also a very important part of what I think is right. It's right not to kill anyone!

It is a little disappointing that she said "plants don't feel pain" because they actually do. I may be a pescatarian but I LOVE the impossible burger, it's so good!
After watching this I just realized, they really need to do 73 Q'S with Natalie Portman for Vogue. I mean how could they pass her? Asides from being a braniac beauty, her answers and responses are genuine, real and actually make sense to life.
Plants do feel pain, and they have mechanism of showing it. You know when your garner just trimed your yard and you go outside and smell the air and say " it smells like grass" that smell is a mechanism of distress the plants make (basically they are screaming for their lifes) and that's one of the many ways they show it.
Alexandra Caraballo De Jesús If you saw someone mowing a lawn, what would your reaction be? And if you saw someone running a dog over with a lawnmower, would your reaction be the same or different and why?
I really don't agree with the "to each their own" attitude. I don't think that it's "cool" that my friends consume animal products, since an animal needlessly had to suffer and die for that. I don't call them out but I don't say that "everyone should do what they want" cause there is a victim involved in their choice, I can't unsee that anymore. Animals are someone in my eyes, not something. But I'm really happy that she spreads the vegan message :)
I see it as something inbetween. We are not atomised individuals but connected social selves. Eating meat kills the planet in a major way and given we are all living on it, it goes beyond an issue of 'every should do what they want'.
just because most medicine is unfortunately still being tested on innocent animals at the moment doesn't mean that you can't try your best by being vegan in every other aspect. We are living in a nonvegan world unfortunately, so it's not possible to avoid harm 100% of the time. But you can eliminate it as far as possible by choosing a more conscious and cruelty free lifestyle which would be going vegan :)
Ma_Saby16 i understand your intentions are good. i guess i just dont see a difference if people can opt for plant based eastern medicines but dont due to the convenience western medicine. i personally dont have a preference i just wonder why people act self righteous about food but easily omitt the other equally avoidable cruelty that they choose with medicine. maybe they arent aware?
Plants were destroying me. Reasons: oxolates (kidney stones, etc.), fibers (abdominal gas pressure - IBS, GERD, hemorrhoids, etc.), carbs (cavity, insulin resistance, etc.), and so on. Also, it’s unlikely that you’ll get enough proteins and iron from plants (absorption), which are the most important nutrients. Can you spot that beautiful vocal fry?
Tofu by itself is nasty AF but it soaks up the flavor of whatever you put it in. It's like brussel sprouts, and everyone hates them but that's only because their mother probably boiled them instead of sauteed them and then held them hostage at the dinner table til they finished them. Also the key to finding out if you could like something is repetition. But I hesitate to mention that because I don't care how many times I could be forced to eat monkey brains or chocolate-covered crickets, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like it.
I don’t think Tofu is nasty, but actually quite nice even plain. There are many types of Tofu and the flavor varies greatly. You might have chosen the wrong one. Anyway if you don’t want, you don’t necessarily need it for a vegan diet. You might even like other soy-based products…
She is so nice, and most importantly, tolerant to meat eaters. So good that such an influential person is representing the vegan community. Way to go Natalie!

Tofu is a blank slate, a canvass you can use sauces and seasonings to give it many flavors. Unflavored tofu is bland but has good texture, but meat-eaters can say the same thing about chicken or pork.
uhm, i dont wanna be annoying, but the audio mix of this vid is off. must of the noise comes out of my left speaker, and her voice comes out of thr one on the right.
Something that frustrates me is when people call me preachy or say that I’m pushing my beliefs on them after they ask me questions about veganism. If you ask me a question, I’m gonna answer it. It’s not fair to then get mean about it and say I’m trying to convert you when you’re the one that brought it up.
A true vegan wouldn’t say “everyone should make their own decisions to eat what they want” The animals don’t get a choice, where’s their say in it? After all it’s their life that’s been taken
I'm not vegan but I eat mostly plant-based and I love that she is so tolerant and specially that even though she's vegan she doesn't impose that to her kids... can she be any more perfect?
AND HERE IS HOW THESE QUESTIONS SHOULD TRULY BE ANSWERED.. "You don't really look like someone who's vegan" well she sort of does considering she's healthy and looks great for her age. "But humans have been eating meat since the beginning of time" Natalie answered this pretty well. We did a lot of things we don't do anymore. Like live in caves, or mud huts. We don't have to hunt for our food anymore, we have supermarkets. "Can you only date other vegans?" It's insane to me that Natalie is bringing out an entire documentary on the harm of animal agriculture, yet her husband isn't vegan 'at all'? For an actual, proper, ethical vegan, you'd only date vegans. There is no way in hell I'd date or marry someone who enjoys paying for animals to have their throats slit, when I am fully aware of all the harm caused for the planet, the animals, and also what it's doing to my loved ones health. "Do your kids have to be vegan?" Any ethical vegan would raise their kids vegan. 100%. Children are healthier without eating rotting corpses and pus secretions from other mammals. "Vegans only eat that way so they can tell everyone they're vegan" no, people go vegan because they feel it's wrong to kill 56 billion land animals and trillions of sea animals annually. "I was going to invite you to my BBQ party but there will be meat there" some vegans could do this, I however could not. I know what goes into every single sausage/hamburger, and there is no way I'd support anyone cooking that. It's murder? I'm not going to sit around and act like it isn't. "I could never go vegan, I tried tofu once and I hated it" cool, I hate tofu too and I'm a vegan. Try tempeh instead. Or just have seitan, chickpeas, black beans, kidney beans, lentils, faux meat alternatives, anything.. "How does anyone afford being vegan, isn't it crazy expensive" the cheapest foods in the world are vegan. Beans, rice, lentils, vegetables, corn.. like I'm confused at how this is a thing? Look at the price of a kilo of dead animal compared to three cans of chickpeas. Being vegan is expensive if you want it to be, same with any other way to eat. Depends how much you spend on your health. "What if you were stranded on a desert island and your only choice was to eat animals" just like Natalie said, unlikely. I don't know how every meat eater comes up with this same, idiotic response!! If you were literally starving, dehydrated, stuck on an island with nothing, and a random animal came along, maybe you'd try to kill it? And probably fail. Because we aren't carnivores. The animal would probably eat us. "Don't you feel sorry for plants, they're technically living things and you eat those" actually, plants don't feel pain like animals and humans. They do not have central nervous systems. I can't believe this keeps coming up.. PS more plants are 'killed' in the harvesting for ANIMAL FEED than there would be for vegan food. ;-)
Aleesha Lindsaar people with opinions like yours are the reason vegans are seen like a nightmare by most people. With that attitude is unlikely to be empathetic with your beliefs. Ps.- plants do have capability to feel. Jellyfish do not have a nervous system either and they are animals. 😌
SimplyBico what's a nightmare? People who are against cruelty and slavy? If that's a nightmare I can't imagine what meat eaters are. Just read and think about it, it all makes sense, obviously you have no idea of how animals in the meat and dairy industry are treated, and if you know and you are still consuming those products, well you are a heartless person. Please do some research before going against vegans.
SimplyBico No, they don't have a brain or a central nervous system. They're intelligent, not sentient. They can react to stimuli, not feel things. The science is so clear on this matter. No scientist disagrees, only uneducated smartasses. And you also didn't adress the point made that consuming animals requires more plants, so if you're truly a plant-right activist you'd be vegan
I grew up in northern Canada and I am first nation. We had to hunt and fish in order to survive. But we are also taught to forage for edible berries/plants. During the winter season, there are no plants or berries to forage. So we are taught too hunt/fish for survival. You should talk to first nations people to show you what plants are edible, you will be pleasantly surprised. Plus you will gain extra survival skills with out hunting to survive!!!!!!
0:35 Everyone? What about the animals Nathalie? Do you hold the same standard for sexual abusers as well? If not, why not? One thing consistent vegans are tired of hearing from apologetic vegans: "it's my personal choice tho".
I wonder if all vegans feel the way you do. I’m plant-based and wish everyone else was too, but it IS a personal choice. What are you going to do? Force people? Be realistic. And abusing children? Really?
I'm the only one that don't hear her speak? I hear the background music but not her voice. I managed to understand what she's saying thanks to the subs. Is there a bug in the video? and about this video, I'm Jewish so I know Natalie Portman so I was really surprise to know that she's vegan. I'm vegan for almost 2 years and I'm raw vegan for over a year so I'm really happy to know a kind person like her is vegan. She is very kind and her voice is so gentle you can't possibly be angry about her even if she speaks about this sensitive topic. I hope she also not using animal products in cosmetic and fashion too.
I could never be with someone who is not vegan or vegetarian. My parents are, my grand parents are, my great grand parents were, and my my mother's side they have been vegan for about 5000 years because half of her family is Jain and veganism is the number one rule of the Jain faith, and the religion is 5000 years old, so,... My husband (yup husband) is vegan, our kids are raised vegan. Now i am going to make even the vegans jumps but even our employees are vegan (we are both veterinarians). When i want to hire someone i take them out for an interview at a restaurant and let them order first. If the person tells me that he or she is vegan, i basically don't even read the CV and hire them. My kids baby sitter is vegan, but that was a deliberate choice, i requested a vegan one. The only people who get money from me but are not vegan are my kids teachers and school workers, but that's ok because i get that money back from non vegan clients at the clinics, which i only spend at vegan restaurants, vegan supermarket, vegan farms,etc.... But actually my husband and kids are fraud vegans because they do eat eggs. But these come from my own hens, all rescued from slaughterhouses and separated from the roosters, so the eggs are not fertilized and since it doesn't hurt hens at all to lay eggs and that they would go to waste otherwise, they eat them. But i don't. I also have cows rescued from dairy farms when they were pregnant so they live peacefully with their calves and the milk goes to the ones it was always destined to. The only thing i would like to eat is honey, but i can't .
Very cute, and I'm so glad amazing role models like her speak about veganism. It IS the future. I just have to add that as a vegan I DO care about that others eat meat, diary, wear leather, and so on. It's never a personal choice, when someone has to be a slave their whole life or die just for that. I could never date someone who was not at least open to the idea of becoming a vegan. :)

I dnt agree with much of her ideology, everyone gets to choose what they can and cannot eat? What about the animals who are forced to be killed for those kind of people. Too many apologetic vegans out there, since when do vegans agree with other people to hurt animals? Thats pure contradiction.
As a vegetarian from choldhood on, I can tell u, we dont EVERY want to talk food. (I am very traumatized from hearing how meat industry operates, so food in general is not a topic i ever talk about)
UKMisfit 3 Absolutely right. We should take responsibility for our actions. If I supposedly will live a less healthier and happy life as a consequence of eating animals, I would take full responsibility and not have anyone to blame. I will be having eggs with bacon tomorrow for breakfast, and a cup of tea...with milk.
The Punisher it’s not unnecessary for me. So I guess i don’t have to justify it? Similarly, you don’t have to justify why you like eating a carrot for example.
She's very tolerant, and that's so admirable. Vegans are often very intolerant towards non vegans and bully and harrass them for not being so. Non vegans do the same to vegans. Either is not right. But being vegan is not easy, and even if you're trying to reduce your consumption, you're still being concious and doing the right thing. Yes, it seems like people should have the right to choose how they want to live; but it's not a choice when there's a victim involved. Just like you can't 'choose to rape' someone if they don't want to get raped.
First 10 seconds fail: Birkenstock are not vegan. (yes they do a vegan version now, but that's not what Birkenstocks * iconic leather sandals * are known for).
www.birkenstockexpress.com/Shop/vegan-all.cfm?gclid=Cj0KCQjw37fZBRD3ARIsAJihSr1kS3Kg8SPs55ZGG7j0Lv_a4WY3mw6_FqRrpwC0E_q27wdFM-4qIoMaAizNEALw_wcB not rare at all
What I mean is: while Birks have been associated with hippies (hence vegetarian? Uh, pfff, OK I suppose) for 50 years, vegan Birkenstock just came out and they are pretty much only available online. Everyone associates Birkenstocks to LEATHER sandals. Now, I don't think what Natalie Portman said is a big deal at all, cause she is not supposed to be informed about shoes. Who really cares? But that first sentence is funny cause it makes absolutely zero sense, that is all. You simply CANNOT associate Birkenstocks with vegans.
Birkenstocks definitely are leather. Even the very common ones that use fake leather for the straps, still use real leather for the footbed. Only recently true vegan ones have started to be produced, but they are only only available online. The bottom line is: when you say Birkenstock you are talking about famous leather sandals and that has been the norm for 50 years since Jerry Garcia from Grateful Dead started popularizing them in the USA.
Thank you Natalie. And for everyone else with the ignorant question about plants being alive; yes they are alive, but in a different way. Plants are not sentient beings.
I could barely pay attention to the vegan questions because I was so distracted by that outfit. What the hell is she wearing? It looks like something someone from a polygamist cult in the Midwest would wear.

WHY DO MEAT EATERS SUDDENLY BECOME NUTRITIONISTS WHEN THEY FIND OUT YOU’RE VEGAN?
For those who don't know already: Every vegan food example that she mentioned has protein. Even vegetables, to some degree. Some more than others, of course. Here is that part of the video: ua-cam.com/video/z39Q4wqlZ6k/v-deo.html
MF TH yup. When I was vegan for 4 years that was the constant question. I still get the question being a vegetarian. I love some protein shakes, beans in dishes, etc. Nat Port nicely gives her opinions here. Weirdly plants do feel pain, scientists have discovered but I don't eat any seafood or animals because they have minds.

Yeah tofu came about some time in ancient China, whereas Veganism started in 1944. I'm aware that a similar philosophy has been practiced in ancient traditions, but I was referring to the western, modern day movement. Tofu was definitely not made for vegans lol, it was made by accident! xD

Also if you really want to argue with “plants have also feelings” - for meat many more plants die!!
moonatnoon I like to give people facts and say world hunger would be solved if people ate less meat.

As someone who produced a documentary about factory farms, I expected a lot more from the last question/comment. If you cared so much about plants, you wouldn't eat animals, as it takes 14 pounds of plants to produce one pound of meat. So if you wanna save plants, eat the plants, not the meat.
I think she was keeping it simple on purpose because the vid had to remain "friendly" to a larger audience.
rozbeh ariya that wouldn't be everyone's answer.
Me too. Its not only boring but the questions could have been answered so much better than just saying "high unlikely" -. - jeez
As someone previously mentioned, they don’t have a lot of time to debunk these statements, it needs to be easily digested by the viewing audience because attentionspan is very low.
Suitable format for the show and the audience.

That did for me, I was DONE. That’s basically it :))
Do you mind me asking why you're vegetarian and not vegan?
sony harris it’s non of your business but thanks for noticing

Soma Hemmington No thanks I prefer to feel powerful and not sick.
Kitten Lyric,
Even if most vegans were assholes, that’s no reason for you to take it out on the animals by paying for their suffering and slaughter.
"Everyonw should make decisions for themselves" is the most precious idea in this video. Thanks for these words, Natalie!

She isn’t just beautiful on the outside. Her love and kindness for animals and other makes her soul beautiful. Good job to every vegan, vegetarian out there. You guys are awesome!!! It’s not easy, but u do it for the animals. You guys are awesome ❤
*And George Lucas killed her off*
Love how she responds so calmly and explains everything so well 😊
She’s so cute! I’ve been a vegan for about 7 yrs now and I have heard it ALL! For instance my father-in-law basically thinks that all I eat is tofu. *eye roll* on the contrary I rarely eat tofu.
People think I eat salad 24/7. Ugh.
SHe is a fraud! For over a decade Natalie Portman built her image on preachin being vegan (which involves more than just eating options), but she also endorses a brand like DIOR that allows animal testing for their products. So much about ethical living! She better have gone haunting for her food in the woods and stop promoting a brand with a history of animal torture... Now I understand why comments are closed on her instagram page
seeing for the second time and i just love this interview so much. i love the fact that she's so kind and respectful to everyone ❤i love her. a beautiful human being, inside and out!!

Ugh I could never be with a non-vegan. So happy my husband and I went vegan together 3 years ago !
#VeganCouplesForTheWin ❤️ ✌🏼 🌱
Vegan Tina same xoxo ! ♥️🌱
Me too :D
And the best part is that vegans have problem to get pregnant... double win for the world.
Biały vegans don’t have problems getting pregnant....
Well nice to *meat* you ;D
I didn’t think I could love her more! 😍 Natalie Portman is goals💜
even if plants felt pain in a conscious way, it still takes far more plants to feed livestock in order to produce meat. so that argument is invalid
Vegan 18 years. Never sick since. 6ft 3 254 lbs 23 years MMA.
I love this! Have always loved Natalie and have always loved having her to look up to as a fellow vegan. Every answer she gave is pretty much word for word what I’d say as well.

Glad she is vegan, but disappointed in most of her answers. “Everyone can choose for themselves” defeats the point of veganism. Animals are not ours to consume.
She did not want people to hate her, that is why she said that
The day I decided to become vegeterian my parents didnt accept it.. my dad, more he was like "Humans are suppost to eat meat cause meat makes u smart" and I was like..

Nath Anter Go back to sleep kid.
Arwen I can pay your house and all your loans, ignorant anonymous person...stfu
Once I was thinking like you, dear Natalie, but now I am the opinion that I say to my children not to lie, not to hit, to be kind, to respect others, not to kill, of course. So I can't say: It's your personal choise to eat Animals because this is also a very important part of what I think is right. It's right not to kill anyone!
Wow, she is my favorite role model, I am going vegan now!!!!!!!!!!!!
go for it! The world like stupid girls that doesn't think for themselves and let the celebrity stars do it.
Shoe Lover Idiot.
A very superficial reason to go vegan just because of a hypocritical celeb

It is a little disappointing that she said "plants don't feel pain" because they actually do. I may be a pescatarian but I LOVE the impossible burger, it's so good!
Go vegan 💗💗
No.
Idiot
After watching this I just realized, they really need to do 73 Q'S with Natalie Portman for Vogue. I mean how could they pass her? Asides from being a braniac beauty, her answers and responses are genuine, real and actually make sense to life.
Yap....I am a Vegan and I would answer in exact the same way like she did.... Brilliant person and actress💎💎💎
Plants do feel pain, and they have mechanism of showing it. You know when your garner just trimed your yard and you go outside and smell the air and say " it smells like grass" that smell is a mechanism of distress the plants make (basically they are screaming for their lifes) and that's one of the many ways they show it.
Alexandra Caraballo De Jesús
If you saw someone mowing a lawn, what would your reaction be? And if you saw someone running a dog over with a lawnmower, would your reaction be the same or different and why?
Plants arent sentient. It isnt the same as an animal
Ma_Saby16 🤣🤦🏻♀️
I see it as something inbetween. We are not atomised individuals but connected social selves. Eating meat kills the planet in a major way and given we are all living on it, it goes beyond an issue of 'every should do what they want'.
i bet you enjoy all your wonderful medical treatment though :). countless of animals die to make our medicines, diagnostic products and vaccines.
just because most medicine is unfortunately still being tested on innocent animals at the moment doesn't mean that you can't try your best by being vegan in every other aspect.
"No stake in the company".
Get it no "steak" I know bad joke. :)
Bolsheviki it's nasty because we aren't meant to eat it, same goes for seeds and legumes, meat is very easy to eat as it is, especially organs.
I don’t think Tofu is nasty, but actually quite nice even plain. There are many types of Tofu and the flavor varies greatly. You might have chosen the wrong one. Anyway if you don’t want, you don’t necessarily need it for a vegan diet. You might even like other soy-based products…
The ad on this video was for Tesco salmon. Oh the irony....
It's like watching a video about the American civil war and seeing an ad for slaves, but hey, humans have been doing it since the dawn of time
She is so nice, and most importantly, tolerant to meat eaters. So good that such an influential person is representing the vegan community. Way to go Natalie!

If there's animals on this island chances are that they're eating vegetation,so I'd eat the vegetation as well
Tofu is a blank slate, a canvass you can use sauces and seasonings to give it many flavors.
Unflavored tofu is bland but has good texture, but meat-eaters can say the same thing about chicken or pork.
aw I love her
I love you Natalie! Thanks for making this video :) Hugs from Argentina!
We love her even more now! Namaste! 💚
Except, you wouldn’t wear birkinstocks if you were vegan...
Ally Roenfeldt except she's said on Twitter before that it's faux
She is the face of Dior who Makes animal products
this might be the one famous celebrity that has addressed veganism like this, thks
Is she in a new Little House on the Prairie movie?
uhm, i dont wanna be annoying, but the audio mix of this vid is off. must of the noise comes out of my left speaker, and her voice comes out of thr one on the right.
Something that frustrates me is when people call me preachy or say that I’m pushing my beliefs on them after they ask me questions about veganism. If you ask me a question, I’m gonna answer it. It’s not fair to then get mean about it and say I’m trying to convert you when you’re the one that brought it up.
I don't think anyone does that.
Staring Natalie Portman who ate eggs and cheese during her pregnancy.
she reminds me of Audrey Hepburn
Kim de Rose yes! she should have played Audrey Hepburn in the Audrey Hepburn movie and not Jennifer love Hewitt
her and audrey tautou are like modern day audrey hepburns.
Kim de Rose Audrey is way more genuine and graceful no comparison there
A true vegan wouldn’t say “everyone should make their own decisions to eat what they want”
The animals don’t get a choice, where’s their say in it? After all it’s their life that’s been taken
Natalie is great. I’m not vegan or vegetarian but I respect them
I'm not vegan but I eat mostly plant-based and I love that she is so tolerant and specially that even though she's vegan she doesn't impose that to her kids... can she be any more perfect?
She doesn't have any *steak* in the Impossible Burger company
Classic I think you missed the pun
Dear God, I've loved her from the Moment I saw her in Star Wars. Intelligent, Humble and a Stunning Beauty!
COOLEST PERSON EVER!!! I AM VEGAN THO.
I’m 13 and vegan...it’s hard tbh everyone is just like attacking you and you just gotta learn to keep your peace and answer Calmly...
Aleesha Lindsaar how long have u been single?
SimplyBico No, they don't have a brain or a central nervous system. They're intelligent, not sentient. They can react to stimuli, not feel things. The science is so clear on this matter. No scientist disagrees, only uneducated smartasses. And you also didn't adress the point made that consuming animals requires more plants, so if you're truly a plant-right activist you'd be vegan
+SmashBomb that comment is completely inacceptable. Reported!

Everyone? What about the animals Nathalie? Do you hold the same standard for sexual abusers as well? If not, why not?
One thing consistent vegans are tired of hearing from apologetic vegans: "it's my personal choice tho".
I wonder if all vegans feel the way you do. I’m plant-based and wish everyone else was too, but it IS a personal choice. What are you going to do? Force people? Be realistic. And abusing children? Really?
I like the fact that she doesn't shame nor force people to follow her footsteps. She just simply gives them an option. That's why I love her!
shes defenitly not vegan for ethical reason
Things non-vegans are tired of hearing: "You know, as a vegan ..."
SHe is a fraud! Is it me, or has her vocal fry gotten worse over the yeara? Still, she is adorable.
Natalie portman answers to every question indirectly be like : it's ok to be stupid and dumb
I dnt agree with much of her ideology, everyone gets to choose what they can and cannot eat? What about the animals who are forced to be killed for those kind of people. Too many apologetic vegans out there, since when do vegans agree with other people to hurt animals? Thats pure contradiction.
I think that she may have internalized being on the wrong end of an extreme power imbalance and almost has to apologize just for existing.
la Sa or maybe it’s purely her choice to not care ..... everyone isn’t gonna go vegan for the animals
I'm sure she cares
I can't measure my love for this Q&A
I could never be like her, I feel so bad watching other people eat corpses in front of me and I get really frustrated:(
How do they even grocery shop if her husband is not vegan…
does she cooks him his meat
I hope not, but imagining a couple cooking separately seems weird as well, as if they were just flat mates!
that must be really hard and a bit frustrating
As a vegetarian from choldhood on, I can tell u, we dont EVERY want to talk food.
(I am very traumatized from hearing how meat industry operates, so food in general is not a topic i ever talk about)
People can be vegan if they want. People can eat animals if they want.
Of course they 'can' if they want, nobody's saying otherwise. Being able to do something has no bearing on whether or not it is morally justifiable.
keirabryson eating meat and not eating meat are both moral. In my opinion of course.
ih8mcfly how do you ethically justify unnecessarily killing an animal?
The Punisher it’s not unnecessary for me. So I guess i don’t have to justify it? Similarly, you don’t have to justify why you like eating a carrot for example.
Omg! The stranded on a deserted island question 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
I love you Natalie Portman!!
Shesare Er Villano well precisely... She just didnt get how a vegan is supposed to look due to the comment “you dont look like youre vegan”
Shesare Er Villano yeah aren’t they (mostly) made of leather?
It did have an 80s vibe. In fact, I think my momma made me wear something like that for Easter in 1982.
