    It's my first week as a paraprofessional and I'm struggling like crazy, I'm like a chicken with my head cut off. I know I'm intimidated by the other educators who, I believe, have better ways and methods than I do and I'm constantly worrying each decision I make isn't good enough. I feel disconnected. I need reassurance, reminders of expectations of me, and how to feel confident in my decisions because I don't and I'm worried I'm a glass house. Everyone can see I'm struggling, unable to grasp the intuitiveness that I think paraprofessionals are supposed to have. I do love this job, I love helping my students, being involved in the class room but my confidence is on the floor. Btw, it's only day 3 for me as a first timer lol

      Im a 16 year old student, and still in education. But I think if you remind yourself that it's okay to make mistakes, and that you are not being watched by everyone and being judged by your every slip up, you will find it much easier. If you are open to really learning about the job, asking questions, engaging with students, you can't go wrong. I'd say just enjoy it and treat it as a learning experience, not a constant test of your teaching ability. You can't put somebody down for trying..

      Hey Kelsey, I am hoping things are going better for you. I completely understand the intimidation you can face by other staff and teachers demands can be tough at times. You just have to remember to breathe and take a walk like I said. Try to keep busy during your day, you will get there. IT may be surprising, but people are not judging you like you may think! They have all been there too on day 3. Try and reach out to some other Ea's they can really be there for you and relate. I'm so glad that you love the job and those students need you remember that! :D

    I think I did well on the surface, but my brain was a bit frazzled supporting children with (simple) maths. But I think I struggled with going back and forth as the children needed hands on support, encouragement and guidance and I think it was a lot to balance for a first timer.

    I’ve heard all these horror stories since I considered studying as a TA. Teacher aides get abused by the kids AND the teachers and we stay back after our finishing time and don’t get paid etc, we get used to teach the entire class and we do all the bulk of the work for the teacher, it isn’t a secure job as it’s casual and not full time. I’m now really torn as I have heard a lot of cons and now I’m worried 😢

    I tried the position as an educational assistant back in the winter of 2018. I felt like a duck out of water for the most part. I found I could hardly open my mouth, even to just tell a grade four class to keep it down, as the main teacher stepped out for a bit. There were days when I went to school and my dresses shirt was drenched from sweat as I guess I was pretty nervous about being their. One day I was made fun of as the main teacher stepped out for a bit, I knew I should have said something in my defence in a constructive manner but I just froze. After that I just cut out a lot of schools so I wouldn't get a call. At this point I came to the conclusion that it wasn't for me. It's been a couple years since I left the school system, the job I have now is becoming almost too physically demanding. I was thinking about going back to the school system as a substitute ea, what do you think I should do?

    • @quotetheraven9074

      Hi Ron the thing that people often don’t realise before becoming a TA is that schools are rough, they were rough when I was growing up which actually is harder for the students to deal with than staff members. You can’t go into these environments expecting things to be like a walk in the park the job role needs a strong minded and strong willed individual to be fair but to also set boundaries. I hear many stories where TA’s say oh I was bullied at school but guess who is in control the TA and it’s our job to not allow that to happen in classrooms or outside of classrooms. Their are also behaviour courses that are around today that might help people to be more adaptable in these types of situations. At the end of the day if you want teachers or students to treat you as a pushover then yes you will be made fun of.

      Hey! I feel like a lot of people will say that they aren't strong in math. Just remember, we don't get taught teacher's math. A lot of teachers will have answer guides that you can use or photo copy and that way you can always have that as a reference. But what I did was take notes on all of the lessons and I paid close attention. It is unlikely that you will have to help with the really difficult math. If you end up with 1s-3s you will be completely fine and their math is a lot of fun! Good luck!

Right now, i'm working in a after school care program at a private school. i love it ! i just play with the kids and i feel like a kid myself. of course the pay/benefits are nothing compared to a EA, but like you said, it can't be about the money. your feedback is appreciated

    • @jasmeencomedy
      @jasmeencomedy 4 роки тому +6

      Yes! A few of my years were spent subbing and I felt like I gained experience fast! I totally understand the nerves with different people everyday, and the staff can definitely judge at times or not care as much as you're likely just there for a day. But! You just have to have the attitude that you just need to make it through the day. Be as friendly as you can, do not worry too much about being perfect or getting all of the students work done. As long as they are happy and safe! Be sure to leave a note at the end of your day to the person you are subbing for. The feedback is so important! Sometimes subbing will be more long term or a few weeks at a time. In the end, if you are really uncomfortable going back to one school , you could always call and discuss with your dispatch person, they are generally understanding. Good luck! And don't worry, most days are awesome! :)

    I’m from the UK- I have a trial day at a special educational needs school as a TA, I don’t have experience with autistic children, and they are aware of this and if the trial day goes well I will have additional training. However I’m a bit in the dark and wanted to know if you had any tips and tricks to help me stay on track? 💜

      Have you tried joining a teaching agency? I am in a similar boat, 3 years of a BA (Hons) in Early Years Education no less! And I also struggle to find permanent positions without experience. The agency could help get you into schools etc. and possibly a permanent role through starting off as supply/cover.

    i have a zoom interview for instructional assistant position in a middle school, i know im great with kids (ive baby sat before) but ive never worked with them. my only prior work experience is retail and receptionist for a tax firm. im really nervous for this interview, im 19 and i really want to start working in the school district and soon go back to school to become a high school english teacher. i guess my question is, am i getting in over my head?

      As far as I know, this course has to be taken in person. Things may have changed though! Whatever school you would like to go with, just contact them and ask. The course is usually offered FT and PT if that may work better for you! Good luck :)

    Hi, i am training to become a teaching assistant. I was studying a degree to be a teacher but feell like it is too full on for me. could you please give me some advice. is there much career progression? can you get paid during holidays? x

    • @Norfolkgal22
      @Norfolkgal22 4 роки тому

      As a teaching assistant you usually only get paid term time (in the UK this is 39 weeks per year, plus one week for Inset (training) days throughout the year) and any holiday pay you have accrued... so again, in the UK this is approx 28 days. I don't know how this varies in different countries though?

    How would you apply to be an EA? Do you apply through the school or multiple schools to be able to go where your needed?.

    • @jasmeencomedy
      @jasmeencomedy 4 роки тому

      That's great! I hope it works out for you. You would apply to each district meaning each city and then they will most likely start you out as a sub so you get used to all the different schools. Within a year ( atleast out here) you would probably have a permanent position.

    Please be committed to your job. Don’t take every other Friday to go to Disneyland or Mondays because your hungover. When you take off and we’re short staffed, the rest of us have to cover for you. Our one on one students are losing their mandated minutes and the school district can be sued because we’re out of compliance.
