  • Yea, it's a two-part Frant. If the world were a free ride I would give it up - but you gotta buy your way through life, and this is all I got going on. I couldn't make a dime doing anything else these days! I know - I have tried! (Poor Fran is whining again about having to work - There Trolls, now you don't have to bother typing it into the comments) Enjoy!

These young "experts" are just as bad as old experts that are stuck in their own education that they completed more than 20 years before. You might have come across both types through your life. I sure have. As fellow youtuber, I recognise a lot of your experiences. I am not sure though that it is a ‘youtube or generation thing’. You're saying exactly what some old greek philosophers were whining about, back in their time.
My experience is that it's an issue spread over all generations. For instance, a greybeard ham radio operator tried to convince me that a USA produced J-37 morse key is most definitely a Junkers (german key, mostly used in the merchant navy). It's not. The Junkers is a radically different design. But nothing could convince him to think otherwise. He was 30 years older than i am. Anyone with a smartphone could just punch in 'j-37 key' and figure out that the Junkers is produced on the other side of the atlantic.
I've had such experiences many times with various subjects. If anything, whenever i'm interacting with people younger than i am, they have less issues with admitting that what they said was wrong.
Seniority is not a guarantee for having the most correct knowledge.
As a side note, i am not doubting Fran's knowledge one single bit and i know damn well how annoying it is when people doubt your knowledge and procedures which are verifiably correct, such as the physically disappearing blue dye in cine film.

@@p_mouse8676 , I wonder if what you refer to has to do with the fact that so many of us have watched detective shows on TV where some investigator or DA says "it doesn't matter what you know, it only matters what you can prove". Not to mention that we have endured decades of political spin and so-called "alternate facts" and what some now refer to as gaslighting.

It's not a generational thing, it's a numbers thing. I remember in the 1990s a letter in the university newspaper by a student who told the university how to get faster internet. Most viewers are amazed by what you do. A small percentage on the low end of the Dunning-Kruger scale shoot their mouths off. Unfortunately a small percentage of a large number is still an annoying number of messages for a single creator to deal with.

I'm enjoying your content. Know from bitter personal experience just what it's like to jump the fifty nine bars in the way of getting any product to market - or not as the case often is... Unless someone has done that themselves they have no useful knowledge to voice - sure seems like there are a lot of google professionals though. You know, the sort who google something for ten minutes and then think they have mastered tens of thousands of hours of practical understanding and experience sufficient to lecture the world. Sad little people in the end aren't they... You keep doing you Fran, because you are a very great deal indeed to tens of thousands of us. Kinda. We tend to be drawn to each other, right? Personally I find online communication easier than in person or on the phone because you can't rely on body language both on the transmitting and receiving end. So, you have to think how to convey the message that would normally be expressed by the tone and loudness of voice, posture, distance, gestures, whatnot. It's also asynchronous, which has its set of advantages and disadvantages, and offers more time for processing and analyzing. Again, a double-edged sword.

I love the silver process (B&W or color). While I've been shooting digital for about 15 years, I still have my Sinar F 4x5 and want to get back into silver. I've loved the process for over years, with the hands on demand it required. I worked for a photographic darkroom manufacturing company in engineering and then management and went to schools and colleges to have them maintain their silver labs. It is such an important subject to learn and helps to make connections with the digital process.
Some think it's 'old' and that digital is the way. They miss the beauty of the silver image that isn't possible with digital.

If somebody else is being trolled I'll leave a comment to that person and say so-and-so is a troll and you should never engage with trolls because being ignored drives them crazy. Invariably, said trolls will come after me and keep poking the bear and trying to get me to respond to them, which I simply will not do, and it's quite obvious from their behavior that they desperately want and need a reply from me. I refuse to give them that satisfaction. I learned this as a teenager when my younger sister used to try and bait me, and I discovered that refusing to rise to her bait drove her nuts.

I have worked in the film industry, both audio and camera, for many ears and if there is one thing I have learned is it that the "simplest" problems often has the most complicated solutions. Oh, you have a blue tint on your old film... that's easy, you do just have to go through nearly all you know about films ever. Is the blue tint on the roll, glass coating, filters, electronic, the method of transfer, the gear you have transferred to, it's graphical capabilities, your screen, the lightning in your room and 1000 things more. :-)
We chased a bug we had where the video quality got worse by heighten the resolution on the recording, it turned out to be the color conversion from our camera and to our new gear, it had a maximum bandwidth usage and when we turned up for the resolution did the colors get reduced, but this was far inside some protocols that had been there from old time and the servers had to run 100% reliable when a new crew came home and connected it to automatic transfer, it was originally the idea that every recording instantaneously should be available for everybody editing the news. (But you can just add some filters, or it has to be your camera's color balance) no Mr smart, it is not that easy! :-)

My one core takeaway from teaching was that "nobody knows nothin'." People live more on tribal knowledge and thinking they know things than on comprehension of the actual way things work. Definitely a valid frustration. We can’t control other peoples reactions or their actions. But we can control our reaction and try best not to let other people live rent free in our heads. Easier said than done. It’s taken me a lot of therapy to be able to try my best to implement that. Please try be kind to each other, we’re all human ❤️
