As a Maori boy growing up in the 80s Buck was God. He was held in the same regard and awe as Colin Meads and would be my captain in any all black Maori 15 greatest of all time.
Buck Shelford, my North Harbour hero , truly the greatest player I have seen in my life time, inspirational leader, Richie McCaw second , John Kirwan third !!
I played rugby for a French team in the 80s. Yes, very dirty. Shelford a main contender for all-time world team. (Zinzan Brooke and Mervyn Davies were great too)
Wayne Shelford was a legend, very respected in France too (despite one of our players tearing his balls with 18 mm studs in Nantes). Now French rugby is much cleaner. But I also played in the 80's and 90's and the violence in the championship in particular was incredible. Probably our dirtiest international squad ever was that of the second half of the 70's - with Esteve, Palmie, Imbernon, Cholley - the Nantes 1986 squad still had some mean players like Eric Champ and hard rough guys like Ondarts, Dubroca, Rodriguez, but back then the board started blacklisting players that were too dirty, but they still played in the championship, especially in clubs like Toulon, Narbonnes, my club of Begles.
Bravest of the brave , along with Gavin Hastings who never shied away from a tackle and never slowed down into one. Ps I'm an England fan but credit where it's due.
Legend, league man myself but played a bit of onion and it was good stuff BITD, by the mid 90s it'd all gone a bit shit tbh and league has gone a bit backwards too in many respects. Love listening to the old boys and how lethal it was back then, remember getting spear tackled and the ref just waving play on and a team mate telling me to get the 'f@@k up.

This man is a National Treasure. A true legend of our game.
Buck Shelford is one of the greatest rugby players ever. Hard as nails and a proper tough ball carrying number eight.
not a very good ball carrier when he loses half of one 😂
the toughest of them all.......Bring Back Buck.

Watch Buck leading the Haka during those years. You can see why they won most of their games. Sad day when his time was ip
