This aircheck features New York City’s Legendary radio personality Bruce "Cousin Brucie" Morrow, from 1968. You will notice that there is no reverb on this recording, because it was recorded directly from the control board at WABC, before the reverb was added to the audio chain.
He started in New York radio min 1959 at WINS, but Cousin Brucie became synonymous with rock and roll during his 13 years at 77 WABC New York, in the 1960s and '70s.
Brucie was a nighttime powerhouse, popular with the teens, as large numbers of them would turn out for his appearances.
He then moved on to WNBC for a few Years, got into radio ownership, and then spent 23 years at 101.1 WCBS-FM playing the oldies, before moving on gig at SiriusXM.
Morrow, has hosted oldies shows on the satellite-radio provider since 2005, most recently "Cruisin' with Cousin Brucie" on Wednesdays. and "Cousin Brucie's Saturday Rock and Roll Party" on Saturdays.
In September 2020, Morrow’s career went full circle when he returned to 77 WABC, to host a saturday night oldies show.

This is one of the 1st air checks of Brucie I haven't heard yet! Thanks ellis and Tony for donating!!!
Brucie has been through every era of radio; from 1958/59 in Bermuda on ZBM, to 1010 WINS, to his 17-year career at 770, onto 660 NBC, station ownership, PBS T.V., to 101.1, satellite, and now back to WABC! Every Saturday night I get that same tingly feeling at approximately 6:01pm when Bruce says his everlasting "Hello Cousins" after a healthy slew of jingles and his Four Seasons "Go Go" theme which has held up for 64 years; it's such a magical feeling.
Few can keep the same act for 64 years, but Brucie has perfected his character!
    Long live Bruce Morrow!

I wish the current Sat WABC 77 am show was more music and less reminiscing. Yes, the legacy New York City audience likes past accomplishments. But to listen in on a phone call "Ben from Canarsie" about some 1970 incident is borderline boring.

WABC was at its very best during the “music power” era of 1968-69, IMHO. I was just a little kid then yet it made a lifelong impression. And, to this day, Cousin Brucie sounds so warm and personable. Which made him somewhat different and unique among jocks in that era. Some called it corny, but it worked just fine and he drew millions of listeners every night. Great aircheck - thanks for sharing.

Great aircheck! 60s and 70s will always be the best times in radio in my opinion. Personality driven radio with a capital P!

Even though I was a Philly guy in South Jersey listening to WFIL, WABC had some of the best jingles. Cousin Brucie was an icon!

As soon as George Michael came over from Philly, he became my favorite WABC jock. No one hit the post like George. And he was great doing Islander color!

Used to listen from 400 miles away. Wanted some pointers as to how to get into radio-wrote to Cousin Brucie? He WROTE BACK --well, his assistant did. It was very cool to a 13 year old radio geek. Now it's only 60 years later and I'm still impressed by his enthusiasm! WABC was awesome- AND the commercials were pretty interesting too!! Ain't much of that these days. "The Cyrkle" for 7-UP? Priceless.

At 0:45, Brucie said "66 degrees." In later years, wouldn't "66" become a taboo word at WABC, as it was the frequency of their competitor, WNBC?

When we listened to WABC-FM's morning simulcast of HOA's WABC-AM show there was also no reverb on the FM. That was pretty cool back then. WMCA never had reverb.

The Good Guys of WMCA had reverb, but theirs was not as heavy as WABC’s. To me, any aircheck of the All Americans without heavy reverb ain’t the same..same…same…

WOW..........no reverb..........I think I read on the NY Radio Messageboard that the reverb was added in Lodi...........is that true anybody?

    • @radiogoodguy6287
      @radiogoodguy6287 2 роки тому +2

The WABC was a plate reverb at the transmitter in Lodi. I think it was Ingram's idea to use a reverb. It's nice to hear no reverb. No reverb sounds more personal.
