Jeri Katherine Howell and Nat Colten's baby nephew, Brooks, was diagnosed with Spinal muscular atrophy with respiratory distress type 1 (SMARD1), an inherited condition that causes muscle weakness and respiratory failure typically beginning in infancy. This rare progressive neuromuscular disease affects the IGHMBP2 gene. There is little known about this rare and often fatal disease. Its rarity is of no comfort for the families affected by SMARD, and so we are building a community to promote awareness and research to make a cure a reality.
